4 super ways to transform a chair and stool with your own hands

We must pay tribute to the ancient Egyptian craftsmen who came up with the idea of attaching a back to the stool, turning it into a chair. Chair designs have changed over thousands of years, but the basic design remains the same today!

The chair has firmly entered the everyday life of each of us. We drink our morning coffee, sitting on it at the kitchen table, have a leisurely conversation, enjoying the company of dear people in a cozy cafe, and help our son or daughter do his homework.

Due to its active use, the upholstery of chairs becomes unusable. Spots, scuffs, and cracks appear on it, which makes it less aesthetically pleasing. Upholstering chairs with natural or artificial leather is the ideal solution for updating them. It will also help to harmoniously fit old furniture into the room if it is renovated with a new design.

Top 10 fabrics for upholstery of chairs

When choosing upholstery for chairs, you need to take into account many factors: from the purpose of use to personal preferences. Each fabric has its own pros and cons.

  1. Flock.

    This is one of the most wear-resistant, durable and practical non-woven materials, which consists of 30 percent cotton and 70 percent synthetic. Externally it looks very attractive due to its velvety surface. The admixture of synthetics makes it very durable; flock is not harmed even by the main pests of home furniture: cats and dogs.

  2. Jacquard.

    Typically, the fabric consists of half cotton and half synthetic, unless you consider natural jacquard, which is made almost entirely of cotton. Jacquard fabric is durable, externally it is smooth, dense and durable. It is easy to care for: just vacuuming and wiping with a damp sponge is enough. Based on the method of applying the design, fabric is divided into woven and printed. Jacquard with a woven pattern is considered to be of higher quality than with a printed one. Most often, jacquard upholstery fabric is used in classic-style kitchen furniture.

  3. Tapestry.

    This is a type of jacquard, a double-sided fabric with very thick, tightly woven threads. Externally, this woven fabric has many colors and patterns. Tapestry fabrics are quite strong and durable, and look good on chairs in a classic interior.

  4. Chenille.

    This fabric has a soft, fleecy surface, usually used for upholstering kitchen chairs. Chenille means “caterpillar” in French. Fluffy fibers are woven between two threads twisted in a spiral and the thread becomes like a furry caterpillar. The chenille fabric is pleasant to the touch and practically does not pill. The weave of the threads is very strong, so the fabric is durable and can be used for a long time to upholster chairs in crowded places.

  5. Matting.

    This fabric can be natural cotton and linen or artificial. For upholstery of chairs, a combination of natural and synthetic matting is usually used. Most often, a plain upholstery matting is used, but it also comes with geometric patterns, mainly stripes. The matting is resistant to changes in temperature and moisture, does not fade in the sun, and holds the filler well, preventing it from deforming and bunching up. Chairs upholstered with matting can be used both indoors and outdoors.

  6. Microfiber.

    This is a thick fabric that can be all cotton or all synthetic. The material is practical, strong and durable. It is these properties that have made microfiber one of the most popular materials for upholstery. Microfiber is washable, does not fade, and does not pill. This material has good breathability and is very good as a covering for chairs. Microfiber is similar to natural suede, so chairs covered with this material look luxurious and are inexpensive.

  7. Velours.

    This is a fabric with dense, thick pile, soft and pleasant to the touch. Externally it resembles velvet; chairs upholstered in velor look beautiful and elegant. In addition, the fabric does not fade or fray, even on folds. This material is obtained by weaving five fibers at the same time, it is very durable, so even the claws of pets cannot damage such chairs.

  8. Faux leather.

    It is a material created by applying a polymer coating to a woven or fibrous support. The polymer coating creates a relief, the fabric looks good and resembles natural leather. The fabric is highly durable and elastic, easy to sew and glue. The fabric feels soft and pleasant to the touch. However, it is flammable and afraid of water: moisture can deform the material. Faux leather chairs look good and are resistant to wear and stress.

  9. Faux suede.

    This is a cotton paper or silk fabric with a pile on the front side. It received its name due to its external resemblance to natural suede - animal skin that has undergone special treatment with vegetable and animal fats, characterized by increased softness and water resistance. Artificial suede is also wear-resistant, waterproof, does not wrinkle, does not fade in the sun, is very soft to the touch, and beautiful in appearance, in no way inferior to its natural counterpart. Most often, chairs for offices, living rooms and dining rooms are upholstered with suede.

  10. Genuine Leather.

    This is a material that is distinguished by its durability, attractiveness, and variety of colors. The peculiarity of leather is that over the years it can wear out and sometimes this makes it even more attractive. Genuine leather as upholstery for chairs has always been considered an indicator of high social status, since it is a very expensive material.

Requirements for fabrics for upholstery of chairs

  • Wear resistance;
  • The ability to maintain the original shade for a long time;
  • Ability to withstand cleaning agents;
  • The ability to maintain an intact texture for a long time, without rolling;
  • Fire resistance;
  • The presence of special impregnations that help preserve the fabric for as long as possible.

Fabric for upholstery of chairs is usually selected according to several criteria.
The first, of course, is the price. There are expensive and luxury upholstery fabrics, these include genuine leather, suede, and natural jacquard. Cheaper upholstery fabrics for chairs are flock, adhesive-based jacquard, chenille, tapestry, velor, matting, microfiber, and artificial leather.

The second criterion: is it natural or artificial fabrics. Some people prefer natural ones, but they do not have high strength, they wrinkle easily and fade in the sun. Therefore, experts advise choosing mixed upholstery fabrics, which contain both natural and artificial fibers. Although modern fabrics mostly combine these properties, as well as a number of other advantages that make chairs comfortable, practical and aesthetically attractive.

Third criterion: fabric color. It is customary to choose the color of upholstery fabric, guided by the rule of 60%, 30% and 10%, where 60% is the color of the walls or wallpaper in the room, 30% is the color of furniture and 10% is the color of accessories and trims.

  • material used;
  • number of pieces of furniture;
  • product design features;
  • the need for repairs, etc.

Seat upholstery stage

Let's move on to the most interesting part of the work - decorating the chair. Follow these steps:

  1. Cut out parts from foam rubber and synthetic padding strictly to the size of the seat. You can make a template from cardboard in advance.
  2. Using furniture glue, secure the cut pieces to the base of the seat. We lay the synthetic winterizer on the foam rubber with the rough side. When additionally using spunbond, cut it with a margin. Place it on top of the padding polyester and secure it at the back of the base with a construction gun or stapler.

When re-upholstering a chair, you do not need to sew anything special in advance. After making a soft “cushion” for the seat, you can immediately begin stretching the fabric. There is also a certain sequence of actions here:

  1. Secure the fabric at the front in the middle, pull it tight and secure at the back in the center.
  2. Do the same procedure on the right and left.
  3. Next, begin to gradually fix the remaining part of the loose fabric. Do everything slowly, alternating the sides of the stretch.

The main rule: uniform distribution of fabric without wrinkles.

Experts offer 2 methods for fixing the material:

Method 1: Using staples. Usually they are attached at a distance of 3 to 5 centimeters. The choice of staples is due to the fact that they ideally hold the material on the base without breaking through it.

Method 2: Using small nails. When choosing this option, it is important to place tape under the nails to prevent the fabric from tearing. The only disadvantage of this method is time. Reupholstering a chair using nails takes a lot of time, as opposed to using staples.
