Light curtains: main features and practical tips for choosing

Undoubtedly, light-colored curtains have positive and negative sides that need to be taken into account. First of all, I would like to note the positive side.

  • Light shades of color such as beige, grey, white, soothing blue are always in trend;
  • Most light colored curtains have subtle textures such as lace. They decorate the room, visually enlarging it and adding elegance to the interior;
  • Such curtains are suitable for almost any room design, because neutral tones serve as an excellent backdrop for any decorative element.

However, nothing is perfect, this also applies to white curtains.

  • Light curtains get dirty more easily and even the smallest stains will be visible on them. There are also some types of fabrics that can only be dry cleaned.
  • They are usually hung in low-traffic areas to reduce the amount of dust that they quickly absorb.

Thick fabrics for night curtains

A bedroom is a room for sleeping, so not everyone is pleased when bright sun rays fall on the pillow in the morning. A simple solution is to choose something from the latest fashion trends, decorating it with fashionable accessories - ribbons, bows, borders or fringes.

Jacquard is a beautiful double-sided material in which a matte pattern is woven on a satin background, and on the reverse side there is a matte background. Not immediately noticeable. Even though these are monochromatic curtains, their iridescence seems multi-colored. This material, depending on the pattern, fits perfectly into most style decisions.

White curtain velvet, plush, microcorduroy and velor are spectacular curtain fabrics suitable for a white bedroom. They also shimmer nobly, but supporters of light window decoration call them “dust collectors,” so they are less popular. However, such a statement is unfair - today many heavy fabrics have a repulsive impregnation.

Iridescent curtains with patterns reminiscent of palace monograms and frosty patterns are expensive, but look very impressive. They are often offered by masters of curtain design studios, since this is an ideal option for most compositions where thick “night” curtains are in demand.

Satin and satin are inexpensive varieties of curtain materials with iridescence. As a rule, they are much denser than dress fabrics, although they have a similar name. They combine perfectly with string curtains and LED lighting of the ceiling cornice.

Plain fabrics with a complex weave of threads, reminiscent of an ancient interior tapestry and palace brocade with golden threads, have not gone out of fashion either. New variations look expensive and colorful. They are used by designers to imitate palace interiors, boudoirs of modern stars and cultural bohemia.

As you can see, the texture of the fabric plays an important role in exclusive curtain variations for a white bedroom.

Choose a ready-made composition or sew the design of a window opening with your own hands, adding the same bedspread for the bed - everyone chooses for themselves. If you like the idea, we recommend visiting the “Podelunchik” website https://podelunchik.ru/, there are quite a lot of ideas for sewing compositions collected there. Pros and cons of white curtains

Before purchasing such curtains, you need to understand all the advantages and disadvantages of white curtains in the interior.

  • White curtains reflect light perfectly, making the room seem brighter;
  • Since white fabric does not heat up as much, a room with light-colored curtains will be cooler on a hot day than a room with dark curtains;
  • White color goes with almost everything, so curtains of this color will be a good solution in any interior;
  • Visually increase the height of the ceiling;
  • White curtains with horizontal stripes, such as black and white curtains, can visually expand a room.

Of the disadvantages of white curtains, only one stands out - curtains of this color get dirty very quickly.

It is understandable that pets or small children may accidentally stain them. However, you need to understand that white color turns yellow over time. Frequent washing will make the curtains less attractive, and dry cleaning can be expensive.

In order for white curtains to last as long as possible, you should choose those made with impregnation that repels dirt.

Children's bedrooms

Yes, it’s difficult to make up for it here, but it’s quite possible. Don’t swear at your baby if he manages to get them dirty. To maximum prevent damage to the fabrics of the color you prefer, adjust the length of the curtains to the part where the child simply cannot reach. Another option is to buy special “disappearing markers” for your baby. So you don’t have to limit your baby’s creativity at all! There are also various variations of designs, as a result of which the window will not look faded. For example, having chosen a bright toy, make a bright version of the pick-up.

White curtains with other shades

The dominance of white in the decor of a room speaks of sophistication and elegance. Here you can play with textures and shades. Smooth fabrics such as satin and silk harmonize perfectly with the rough texture of pillows and blankets.

If you combine white curtains with bright accessories, the interior will look less boring. Wallpaper, upholstery and other details can add a rich touch to a room's design.

The combination of beige and white colors creates a feeling of warmth and comfort.

The harmonious combination of design elements of black and white curtains and the interior of the room speaks of originality of taste. Floral patterns on light-colored curtains combined with similar large prints on furniture upholstery will look good. The main thing is that everything is moderate and elegant.

Bedroom

In addition to living rooms, white curtains are very often used to decorate bedrooms - places for relaxation and privacy. Considering that this room is usually decorated in pastel colors, white color will be very useful here, because it will only add coziness and warmth.

White sliding curtains in the bedroom can match the furniture or bed linen both in decor and material. By hanging floor-to-ceiling windows with white curtains or drapes, you will increase both the width of the window and your bedroom - of course, at the level of perception.

The same effect is provided by matte white curtains, covering the entire space from wall to wall and creating a holistic, more voluminous space along with matte white walls and ceiling.

Thick, opaque white blackout curtains with glitter, print or patterns will not let a drop of daylight into your bedroom and will prolong your dreams on the weekends.

The wall located at the head of the bed is also often decorated with an elegant white curtain made of shiny material - satin, silk or cambric.

You can create a romantic bed using a canopy made of transparent or translucent white fabric. It looks gorgeous, and it will protect you from the sun, drafts, and quite possibly from awkward situations if you don’t live alone.

Light, almost ephemeral white curtains are ideal for a bedroom in silver or pearl tones. Imagine how romantic the bedroom will be if they also flutter!

And in combination with a beautiful lambrequin, they will become a completely self-sufficient interior decoration.

White thick curtains will save you from bright daylight, but at the same time they will not make the interior more gloomy and gloomy.

A cozy interior, stylized as country, Provence or vintage, will be very organically complemented by bleached linen curtains. However, fabrics made from other natural materials will also give them a special charm. As you can see, the edging of the curtains of a bedroom decorated in Provence style can echo the pattern on the bedspread or carpet.

White curtains with a gradient (a smooth transition to another color) will add a romantic flair and some frivolous sophistication to a bright interior.

It will create in the room that very sophistication that is so dearly valued by connoisseurs.

It is the transparency of the tulle curtain that accentuates a simple room, giving it a touch of elegance. This makes a small room more interesting, and the practical importance of the fabric is difficult to overestimate. During the daytime, direct sunlight is blocked, and at night the view from the street is limited.

  • For a living room in a Mediterranean, Provencal or shabby chic style, sheer curtains made of tulle, silk or chiffon are suitable.

In the examples given, white curtains do not make the room look like a hospital or public institution. They look light and noble.

The edge of the curtains with the same pattern as a bedspread or blanket on a sofa looks especially original. White curtains also harmonize well with curtains of other colors.

Ideas for different styles

The classics will be decorated with a white veil and French curtains, combined with thick curtains. The decor can be tiebacks or tassels.

A modern interior can be decorated with straight curtains in rich colors or rich textures in combination with a light veil, as well as minimalist Roman or roller blinds.

In the photo, a modern living room with straight white curtains is combined with roller curtains without overloading the interior.

Airy design with a slight touch of antiquity. Linen or tulle curtains will harmoniously support the Provence theme.

Light design with simple shapes and natural filling. Roller blinds and Roman blinds would look appropriate in a Scandinavian interior.

A rustic design can be complemented by checkered curtains or small floral patterns.

It’s hard to imagine a marine-style interior without a white and blue combination. Curtains can be decorated with stripes or thematic patterns: shells, skates.

White curtains will make the rough loft style softer and add a touch of tenderness. Straight floor-length curtains or Roman curtains will be a good idea.

Light curtains in a modern interior

Here's what interior designers suggest for decorating windows in a modern style:

  • make an asymmetrical curtain shape to match the semicircular or stepped edge;
  • use picturesque scenes transferred from the paintings of avant-garde artists onto a light canvas;
  • make zigzag edges;
  • use shades from light to dark colors, for example, amber;
  • use layered window curtains using 2-3 pastel fabrics of the same color.

Light curtains in a modern interior

Light curtains can be used in different ways in a modern interior: making a window decoration the center of a spatial composition or an unobtrusive detail of a high-tech design project.

For window decoration, use light curtains depicting a city panorama. To prevent a light room with dark curtains from looking gloomy, it is optimal to combine thick curtains with a transparent curtain.

Automatic interior blinds in high-tech style

In a high-tech interior with a minimum of decorative elements, you should choose automatic curtains. The photographs demonstrate the simplicity of the design and ease of control using a remote control, gadget or smart home system device.

The control controller integrated into the electric frame allows you to set the timing of raising and lowering the curtain to avoid excessive heating of the room at midday.

Tulle

white tulle

A classic that is always in fashion, it will look good with curtains of different textures, cuts and shades. If the models are designed in classical directions, you can give preference to white tulle with a simple straight cut.

If the room's windows face north, then tulle curtains will harmonize well with warm-colored curtains. This will make the room look more comfortable. If the window faces south, you should opt for cool shades. For example, shades of blue or gray will give a refreshing effect.

Rolled

This model is considered simple and affordable. Due to its compactness, functionality and simplicity, it is especially popular. This curtain does not require much space and will fit well into any interior. Can hang both on the balcony and in the office.

Long curtains in the classic style

Anyone who loves classic style will not go wrong if they choose such curtains. This direction is always relevant. Use fringe, tie clips, or curtains in other shades to decorate these curtains.

Plain curtains with curtains with a pattern or design

If the interior is made in a classic style, then white curtains will be an appropriate addition. If light curtains have a voluminous pattern, they are also suitable for decorating a classic interior. Geometric patterns are appropriate in a modern style, and cheerful images are suitable for decorating a nursery.

“Short curtain + long”

This combination is a good option for decorating the interior of a living room, kitchen, or children's room. The short part can be made in the form of a straight curtain using French, roller, or Roman blinds. These curtains are also suitable for a black and white kitchen.

Curtain design

White tulle or veil will make the interior of the room incredibly soft and airy. Looks harmonious with curtains of a different shade. Thick curtains are suitable for Scandinavian, modern, minimalist design.

The direction of the stripes will affect the visual perception of the room. Horizontal stripes will make it wider, and vertical stripes will make it higher, and the more contrasting the tone, the more the effect will be emphasized, for example, a combination of black and white curtains. The color of the stripes can echo the general palette in the interior and emphasize the thematic direction, for example, blue and white stripes in marine design.

Polka dot curtains will fit well into the interior of a bedroom or children's room.

Checkered curtains will successfully decorate children's and kitchen windows. The color will look good on curtains of a simple straight cut, which can be decorated with garters.

Patterns and ornaments should reflect the stylistic direction of the room. Monograms and floral patterns are suitable for decorating a classic living room or bedroom. Geometric patterns will decorate a modern or retro room.

The color of the pattern may overlap with other pieces of furniture or some decorative elements. For example, brown flowers on curtains and furniture upholstery of the same shade, or juicy red poppies and a painting or stylish figurines. The design itself can be repeated in other details: black or gray shapes on curtains and sofa cushions or blue shells on a tablecloth and napkins.

White curtains with voluminous flowers will decorate a classic interior, geometric patterns are suitable for a modern direction, and playful designs are perfect for decorating a children's room.

Photo printing allows you to apply any image to the fabric, it looks original and impressive. Flowers will decorate the interior of the living room or bedroom, such as white roses, tulips or orchids on a beige or bright background. For a child's room, you can use images of your favorite fairy tale and cartoon characters.

Embroidery will look especially elegant on white linen curtains. It can depict flowers, animals or thematic patterns.

Delicate lace will make the interior incredibly delicate and romantic. Lace is combined with tulle and linen. Openwork elements can be used as decoration and complete the design.

White curtains - care rules

In order for white curtains to satisfy their appearance for a long time, they must be properly cared for, taking into account the specifics of the fabric. The following guidelines will help with this procedure:

  • Vacuum your curtains regularly using a soft brush attachment designed for cleaning fabrics. Curtain rods should be washed with soapy water and wiped with a damp cloth.
  • Curtains should be washed twice a year using the “Delicate Wash” mode.
  • Velvet, jacquard. Before washing, be sure to clean the folds from dust. Dry carefully to prevent wrinkles from forming. Ironing should be done in the direction of the pile.
  • Lambrequins and tapestries. It is better to have them dry cleaned so as not to spoil their original appearance.
  • Silk, moire, fabric with eyelets. They require delicate handling, so it is best to entrust such curtains to specialists.
  • Cotton, satin, polyester, linen. Can be washed at home, but carefully, at a temperature not exceeding 40°. It is best to iron the reverse side with a non-hot iron. Polyester does not require ironing, just dry and hang carefully.

If you take into account all these nuances when choosing and caring for white curtains, you will see that your home is decorated with special taste, and it is comfortable and bright.

Methods for attaching curtains

With roller blinds everything is clear: the design is worked out in advance. You just need to secure it above the window. But classic curtains can be attached in different ways. Fortunately, the living room allows this too!

Ties

The canvas is attached to the cornice using laces, ribbons or braid. This option is not suitable for very heavy fabrics, because the knots will constantly unravel. But elegant bows will only emphasize the elegance of an airy curtain or tulle with an openwork floral pattern.

Loops

Ready-made decorative loops immediately run along the top of the curtain, which are put on the cornice. They differ from ties in that they do not need to be tied by hand. The loops can be solid or with fasteners in the form of buttons, buttons, or Velcro. The quantity is calculated taking into account the width and weight of the canvas.

Backstage

The cornice is inserted into an improvised fabric tunnel, similar to the hood tightening principle. Due to the absence of hard fasteners, such curtains are the quietest, but they are difficult to remove for washing and drape beautifully.

Braid

Decorative braid is sewn on top of the curtain, which creates small and frequent uniform folds. This texture cannot be replicated using other fasteners. Keep in mind that the piece of fabric for the braid should be one and a half to two times wider than the window opening.

Eyelets

Eyelets are special rings inserted into holes along the top of the curtain. They can be made of plastic or metal. If you make them to match the fabric, the eyelets are almost invisible when installed. And their main advantage is textured and uniform folds even on heavy curtains.

Rings and clamps

Curtain rings are one of the most common solutions in Europe and America. They differ from eyelets in that they are attached to the top edge of the fabric, rather than being “built into” it. Therefore, it is easier to remove such curtains from the cornice.
