A hallway with a dark floor does not mean choosing a radical black color, does not have anything to do with dark gothic, and does not reduce the space. What is a dark floor, what materials to make it from and what to combine it with - in the material below.
The hallway is the first room of the apartment, often a passage room and not very good in terms of layout and size. The floor design must meet the following requirements:
- match the design of the apartment;
- take into account the need for frequent cleaning;
- be wear-resistant;
- give the space “stability” without weighing it down.
The last point is about what colors are considered dark for the floor. In the interior, the concepts of light and dark are relative, so the floor will be considered dark if it is 3 tones or more darker than the walls. There is a lot of room for choice, so dark flooring is easy to combine with the vast majority of interior styles and key objects.
Combination of areas of different colors
The white and black design of the hallway allows you to visually play with the space: expand it or narrow it if desired. For the first operation, light shades are required, for the second, dark shades.
This solution is optimal for a small room, such as a hallway. If it is small, you need to use as much white as possible; in the opposite situation, you can add more black and shades of gray.
Glossy black hallways are completely universal. After all, this color can increase the size of any space. It allows you to complicate the texture and make it multifaceted, achieve the effect of a black mirror surface and add endless depth to everything. This color can be used both for decorating the floor and for painting the ceiling.
White ceilings are almost classic; they add height to the room. A black edging allows you to significantly increase the degree of whiteness; in addition, any dark patterns or overlaps are suitable for these purposes.
Color palette
When the creation of an interior is at stake, you should not perceive the black color as a single copy. The corresponding design is a deep tone of cold and even warm colors. Therefore, black color is varied:
- Graphite;
- Jet;
- Anthracite;
- Smolyanoy;
- Onyx;
- Peat, etc.
The listed representatives of black colors go well with beige, sand, cream and gray colors, provided that the latter come without patterns or provide minimal decor. The lack of compositions and a limited palette contribute to laconicism, and the latter, in turn, makes the space spacious and modern.
How to use shadows to your advantage
Designers advise choosing one color as the main color, and the second as an additional one. Then the color scheme will look most harmonious. Often, white is chosen as the dominant color; this helps to avoid situations in which the hallway turns out to be too small and gloomy in feel. If you want to choose black as the main color, then you need to make an effort to avoid the previously mentioned nuances.
In this case, the entire emphasis should be on the white areas; it is worth significantly increasing the amount of light in the room. It must be remembered that in fact, all the negative aspects after cleaning (such as stains) are more visible in the black areas, and not in the white ones, as it seems at first.
Already at the initial stage, it is recommended to opt for closed-type furniture so that all elements of clothing and shoes can be removed to preserve the aesthetics of the appearance. You can use cabinets for shoes, compartments and cabinets. All these elements are sold, including to order according to an individual sketch. Everyone will find the desired option.
It is better to highlight areas near the front door with black, because there will most likely be a larger number of dirt particles there. It is best to immediately choose materials of both colors of good quality and taking into account that they will need to be washed frequently:
- For the floor, it is better to choose laminate (without further use of dry cleaning);
- tiles, in case of cleaning with different means;
- tile ceramics;
- mosaic panels will enliven and diversify any space;
- stone (natural or artificial).
To emphasize those parts of the hallway where rare soiling and subsequent cleaning are expected, you can place wallpaper or plaster parts with decor.
If there is empty space, you can also paint it or decorate it with stickers or ornate lettering. If desired, all these parts can be updated, cleaned or replaced.
Texture
Relief tiles are rarely used to decorate the floor in the hallway: they will accumulate dirt and soon lose their attractiveness.
Among the smooth specimens there are:
- Glossy materials that perfectly reflect light. But on such a surface any dirt will be too noticeable, creating a feeling of sloppiness. In a small hallway, such tiles can narrow the room too much.
- Matte materials that are not conspicuous and are used in small spaces.
- The satin surface gently reflects light without irritating the eyes or attracting much attention. This option perfectly emphasizes the color and decor of the coating.
A variety of floor tiles will help you create the most attractive hallway without spending a lot of time on maintenance.
Gender and black and white style
White and black colors are easy to use as floor coverings. It is better to use gray and its shades; a purely white and black solution will only bring problems. Laminate, linoleum, tiles (patterned, marble or any other) are suitable for the floor. Graphic images on the floor are a trend that is gaining popularity every day.
We must not forget that different types of rugs are still part of the style; they must also be consistent in the same color scheme and style with all the surrounding decor. They can be stylized to resemble the color of a zebra or Dalmatian, they can imitate a chessboard or complement some other element of the hallway with a color print.
Lighting
Black rooms require a lot of light to refresh and brighten the interior. The lack of light is somewhat compensated for by yellow inserts. They smooth out harsh contrasts and imitate electric light.
However, be aware that when you install glossy black tiles on the floor in a sunny room, you can achieve a lot of glow. Not everyone will like this shade.
Romance of two colors
The most interesting interior style with such colors is undoubtedly retro. Art Deco and Greek style follow, bringing their own characteristics and unique details in design and compatibility.
Retro style does not accept the presence of modern technology and textures. Greek is characterized by swirl patterns and the use of contrasts, while Art Deco is famous for its forged elements and weightless weaves.
Types of tile coverings
Ceramic tiles
This is exactly the type of coating that is implied by the word “tile”. Floor tiles in a hallway differ in many ways from those used in a kitchen or bathroom. It has a much higher density, thickness and grain size. Thanks to these qualities, the material is able to withstand shock and pressure.
The average price of ceramic tiles is from 200 to 1000 rubles per square meter. The price depends on the manufacturer, the newness of the collection and the design. Many companies make patterned tiles from wood or stone, but ceramic tiles remain the most popular flooring option.
Interior tiles look simple, but will last a long time due to increased safety
Porcelain tiles
Porcelain tiles have an excellent appearance and are very practical due to their durability. According to the Friedrich Mohs scale, the material has a load resistance rating of 7.
Manufacturers produce tiles of different thicknesses. It ranges from 7 to 30 mm. In addition, the material easily tolerates frequent temperature changes, which makes it popular for rooms close to the street.
In addition to high strength, the tiles have excellent chemical resistance. The exception is hydrofluoric acid, which corrodes granite. In addition, the material is valued for its ability to eliminate any surface defects when installed correctly.
Vinyl
Vinyl tiles are made from rubberized plastic and stone chips are added to the mixture. Advantages of vinyl: no seams during installation, increased strength and high resistance to mechanical damage.

Quartzvinyl
Tiles are made by combining different materials. In essence, this is a modern PVC surface. Thanks to its excellent wear resistance, it is designed for places with large crowds of people and high traffic.
The tile consists of four layers:
- The first one is made of polyvinyl chloride. Provides reliable attachment to the surface.
- The second one is made of fiberglass, which increases its load-bearing capacity.
- The third strengthens. Made from quartz and vinyl.
- The fourth layer is protective. It consists of polyurethane. It also performs a decorative function.
The material has excellent soundproofing properties compared to others. It has a number of advantages. For example, it is perfect for “warm floors”. Although artificial materials are used in the manufacture of tiles, they are completely safe for humans, as they remain environmentally friendly.
Multilayer tiles
It consists of several layers. The first is thickened polyvinyl chloride, the second is a ceramic base with the addition of granite particles, then a layer of pigmented and green grass. The obvious advantage of such tiles is its high strength. In addition to this, it is not as cool as regular ceramic tiles, but is a bit like laminate.
PBX
Polyvinyl chloride is linoleum that is laid in small parts. Visually, linoleum goes well with ceramic tiles. The coating is soft and easy to install. The natural advantage of linoleum is its low price, but there is also an obvious drawback - it quickly breaks from mechanical damage.

Clinker
Clinker is a small brick that has a rectangular shape and is fired using a special technology. Sometimes it is glazed and uneven. Clinker is used not only on walls, but also on open floors.

Monochrome
A black hallway with an additional addition of white is a field for realizing the ideas of any sophisticated owner. It will combine high-tech with baroque, and the flavor of African style with northern wenge.
In the photo of a black hallway with additional elements, you can see black walls covered with velvet wallpaper, as well as a black door framed in white. On both sides of her are snow-white rococo chairs, above are lamps with imitation candles, and mirrors. A wardrobe in the rococo style in white is suitable here.
An alternative is a completely snow-white cabinet, walls, a black opening and a matching tiled floor. You can focus on a white ottoman or a white chandelier located on the black ceiling in the hallway.
Monochrome style allows you to use many interesting things:
- high-tech, combining conciseness and geometric shapes;
- classic, which is decorated with elements of silver, tiles and gray accessories;
- art deco, like a stylish cobweb;
- ethnic styles known for their sharp contrasts;
- pop art, with its reminiscent comic book style.
The times when it was common practice to create a hallway in only one specific color are gone. Modern trends have given everyone around the world the right to implement absolutely any ideas in their hallway, even combining white and black.
In contrast, all other rooms can be decorated in completely different styles and colors, which will allow you to perceive the apartment as a jewelry box.
It is very easy to spoil a favorable impression of style, so you should not try to decorate completely all visible surfaces in black or white. According to the advice of designers, it is better to do everything gradually and in portions. You can start by adding a black chandelier or vase, and then move on to replacing furniture, flooring and wall coverings.
Types of tiles
The most popular are three types of tiles:
- Ceramic tiles are made from fired clay. This material looks great in any room, but is considered a rather fragile material. For a long time, this option was considered the only worthy one, but recently it has been losing its position, transferring it to more modern coatings.
- Porcelain tiles are much more resistant to all types of damage. The material contains clay, quartz sand or durable rocks. It is characterized by a special level of strength and water resistance. Another advantage of this type of floor tile will be a complete imitation of any other material: stone, wood, brick, tile.
- Quartz vinyl tiles are created from quartz sand with the addition of especially durable PVC. Both materials give the tiles increased durability and wear resistance.
Porcelain tiles are the most popular for installation in hallways; quartz vinyl tiles are still considered a fairly new material and are not very readily used for decoration.
