Features of choosing curtains in the attic
It is worth considering some nuances:
- For windows facing south, use curtains with a special reflective lining that prevents fading and heating.
- It is equally important to choose a fabric that does not accumulate dirt and dust particles.
- For small attic spaces, it is advisable to use laconic curtains with a simple design.
- For sloping windows, it is better to choose curtains made of denser fabrics, since a powerful stream of sunlight falls on them.
Roller blinds for attic windows
Many designers claim that regular curtains are not suitable for roof windows. Luckily, you can choose roller blinds. Attaching them directly to the glass of your window will ensure smooth opening and closing. Once you decide on the type of roller blinds, you can choose the color. If the attic room faces east, then it is advisable to choose a denser fabric that will protect you from the dazzling rays of the sun in the morning. If you are located north or have a large building nearby that limits access to natural light, you may want to consider brighter curtains.
Roller blinds - great light blocking
Attic windows are an invaluable way to let in daylight. But sometimes there can be too much light, which is why you should consider installing an effective solution for your space. Roller blinds are ideal for your windows. They're great for blocking light in those early summer morning hours or helping people on the night shift fall asleep. This tightly woven fabric is a regular fabric that has a semi-precious PVC backing that blocks light from passing through.
Types of curtains for attics
There are many designs to choose from. Among them you can always find something suitable to your taste.
Blinds
They transmit sunlight perfectly or completely block it. Quite often, both horizontal and vertical lamellas of various colors and shades are used. Also, for attics, pleated curtains with a special coating are chosen to create a reflective effect.

Curtains
They will create a warm and cozy atmosphere and are an ideal option for decorating an attic space. In addition, traditional curtains go well with other types of curtains. To hold them, special grabs and additional elements are used.
Blackout
Close the room from light and darken it by 80-90%. Perfect for organizing a day out.
Curtains for sloping roof windows
Currently, the market is full of all kinds of window solutions. You can find almost every color, pattern and length. This allows you to choose the right curtains. A sloped ceiling adds character to a room, but can make decorating difficult. If the window is located between two slanted walls, you may be faced with how to block the opening from excessive sunlight. Below are some ideas on how to deal with these problems.
Tip #1
First you have to understand what the purpose of the window curtains will be. Do you need privacy and easy blocking or a purely decorative element? How do sloped ceilings approach the task? Is this something you want to highlight or hide?
Tip #2
If the curtain is decorative and the window is between two slopes, you can highlight the slopes by placing a gorgeous fabric. It can be assembled using tying tape to avoid blocking the opening.
Tip #3
If you need to cover a window for privacy and easy blocking, then a simple Roman curtain hanging inside is sufficient. It will be enough so as not to interfere with the sloping walls. However, flowing fabric curtains are also suitable, adding a romantic touch to the room.
Location and shape of windows
Despite the complex shapes, there are many decoration options.
With sloping ceiling
Curtains on a sloping cornice will look great. To regulate lighting, tiebacks in the form of ribbons, tassels or fabric strips are used. This curtain composition will especially emphasize the unusual shape of the slanting window.
Windows with bevel (sloping)
For such window openings, blinds, roller blinds and regular curtains made of loose materials are suitable. Fabric panels placed on sloping windows will create a very cozy and romantic atmosphere in the room.
Triangular windows
Pleated curtains or curtains with hooks, evenly distributed along one side of a triangular window opening, will allow you to decorate such windows without limiting your imagination.
Trapezoidal
Compact roller or pleated curtains are perfect for trapezoidal windows. When using fabric curtains, the main thing is to choose the right cornice.
For large windows
Curtains made of translucent, airy materials, such as organza or veil, on the ceiling cornice, when decorating large panoramic windows, look elegant and harmoniously complement the interior.

Arched window
The best solution would be curtains that are connected in the center of the upper part of the window opening. To complete the picture, be sure to use tiebacks.
Round
On such a window, any curtain options look organic. The only thing is that some straight models of curtains, when closed, will not be able to emphasize the original shape of the window.
Ceiling
Transformable ceiling windows in the roof are quite an interesting interior detail; Roman or roller blinds are suitable for them.
Window types
Most often in modern houses there is a mansard type, which is located in the attic. If you have this type of opening that is located almost under the roof, then it is necessary to eliminate the effect of oppression and weight, emphasizing, on the contrary, the lightness of the structure. In this case, it is better to use roller blinds.
The second type of structure is a cornice window. It is almost no different from the usual one, only it is installed on the wall directly under the roof.
The third type is called a transforming window; a photo of attic curtains on such a structure displays all the originality of the object. It can easily turn into a balcony with the help of simple machinations. True, the object will be very expensive, which is why it is not very popular today.
A very interesting type of skylight is the light tunnel. This design is actually a pipe that goes into the attic at one end and onto the roof at the other.
Designers have developed another type of window openings for the attic called extension windows. This type is very original. On the one hand, the window will look original, and on the other, a large amount of sunlight will enter it.
The last type of such windows is the connection of a standard window. This combination will fill the room with additional sunlight. Based on the named types of window designs, you yourself must choose the type of curtains you need.
Material for attic curtains
A huge variety of materials allows you to create an appropriate and attractive image of curtains.
Paper
Used to make pleated curtains. Original paper accordion designs are ideal for those who want to design a window opening in a non-standard way.
Bamboo
Bamboo blinds have an individual and extravagant look. This design of attic window openings will give the room lightness and sophistication.
Plastic
Plastic slats provide a stylish design and original appearance to windows of almost any shape. In addition, this material is durable and environmentally friendly. Blinds are very practical, easy to use, maintain and clean.
Metal
Metal products are durable, do not deform and are quite easy to care for. However, such models heat up easily. Therefore, they are not recommended for installation on windows facing south.
Fabrics (tulle, organza, linen, cotton)
Fabric sheets will give the interior a complete look. There are no specific criteria for choosing material for curtains. The only thing is that the density of the fabric will depend on which side the windows are located.
How to hang curtains and curtains on non-standard windows
To decorate a window of a non-standard format, you need a special cornice. If you do not have the skills to fasten such structures, then it is better to contact specialists. Otherwise, if you attach the structure incorrectly, you will not be able to use it to its maximum functionality.
Such curtains make the interior elegant and give it some zest.
If you want a non-standard window opening to attract attention, follow simple rules.
- Choose a cornice that will follow the shape of the top frame.
- The shape of the curtains should duplicate the shape of the window.
This design solution will make a modest-sized room visually larger and the interior more interesting.
They are complemented with holders, decorative tiebacks or other accessories that add even more originality to the curtains.
An arched curved cornice is an ideal solution for a semicircular shape. Tiebacks appropriately complement the composition.
Ideas in different styles
Attic curtains should be in harmony with the overall style and interior of the room.
Classic
The combination of tulle with curtains will transform the atmosphere, add elegant notes and create an aura of comfort in a classic interior. To fasten such curtains, double curtain rods or clamps are used, and the original design is complemented with tiebacks or clips.

Loft
The loft-style attic floor should be well lit. Therefore, simple monochromatic curtain designs with a predominantly smooth or metallized surface are used here.
Provence
Light and airy curtains made of light fabric with unobtrusive floral patterns will perfectly transmit sunlight and harmonize with the entire interior of the room.
Country
Not too bright curtains made from natural materials look best. Calico, linen or cotton fabrics will help create coziness, comfort and a complete rural look.

Minimalism
This style welcomes simple geometric shapes. Roller blinds or blinds will add completeness to your interior design.
Scandinavian
Light curtains or blinds in pale, cool colors will look good here. Metal blinds can especially emphasize the asceticism of the Scandinavian style.
Chalet
The main principle of the chalet style is the use of only natural fabrics. Such curtains will create a cozy atmosphere and fit perfectly into the interior in the spirit of alpine mountain wooden houses.

Curtains for roof windows: functional features and varieties
Decorating an attic for each of its owners becomes a rather difficult problem, since the process of choosing curtains for an attic window must be carried out taking into account all the features of the window design.
There are several options for decorating windows in the attic room:
- purchasing fabric and independently making curtains from it, according to a previously planned design and taking into account all the individual design features, in this case there should be no problems with moving the curtains along the cornice and opening windows;
- fixing curtain panels using frames, the curtains are fixed in the window on two cornices or completely on a frame that holds them in the desired position;
- replacing the cornice with hooks, this method allows you to get an unusual design of curtains installed in the attic window;
- The use of roller blinds or blinds is most suitable for modern interior stylistic trends.
The most popular option for decorating a window in the attic is the purchase of roller blinds or blinds, which are fixed to the window using special mechanisms. If none of the store-bought curtain options suits you, the option of custom tailoring curtains to order is possible. In this case, they will most accurately harmonize with the window.
The choice of one or another option for curtains for the attic is carried out primarily taking into account the characteristics of the window. The most suitable curtains for it are determined in relation to the types of windows.
We suggest you familiarize yourself with the main types of dormer windows, in relation to their design and location:
- the most popular window option is a window opening installed in the attic; such a window is installed on the base of the roof, and in order to emphasize the lightness of this interior element, we recommend purchasing a standard option for it in the form of roller blinds;
- windows of facade or cornice type - these windows are practically no different from ordinary windows, in addition, the place of installation is the wall, above the roof;
- transformable window, this design can change its shape and take on the appearance of a balcony, such windows are not very popular due to their high cost;
- light tunnels - in the case when there is no need to install a standard window, this type of window is installed, this window is a certain pipe, which with one part penetrates into the attic, and the second goes out to the roof;
- the use of extension windows allows you to build an unusual and original design, which, on the one hand, will make the room attractive and fill it with daylight;
- with the help of additional lower elements it is possible to make two windows, one of which will be attic, and the second - standard; combining them into a regular structure will make the room brighter.
When choosing curtains for the attic, you should take into account all the individual characteristics of each window.
Attic curtains photos and sewing options
A classic design option for a roof window is the use of roller blinds. Rolled curtains are made from various types of materials and are installed on top of the opening. To avoid sagging, it is recommended to use guides for additional fixation of curtains.
This version of curtains fits almost any interior style, as manufacturers produce them in a wide range of colors and textures. It is possible to combine roller blinds with regular curtains or tulle. In this way, it will be possible to adjust the light flux and give the room elegance and comfort.
In order to protect the room from too bright light, especially from the south, it is recommended to hang blinds on the windows. Their dense structure allows for comfortable stay in the attic at any time of the day. In addition, if the window is located on the ceiling, then this option is most suitable. Since some versions of blinds are equipped with a remote control, with which you can regulate their opening and closing.
To make blinds for roof windows, different materials are used in the form of plastic, metal, aluminum and even fabric. Different designs are applied to them, the type of which depends on the features of the attic interior.
The easiest way to decorate skylights is with fabric curtains. This option is appropriate if the windows are located directly on the wall. Although it is possible to install them on a structure with a slight slope. However, when choosing curtains for the attic, you should give preference to a light-resistant material that will not lose its color over time and will not accumulate dust.
Fixing fabric curtains on a roof window is slightly different from the classic version of their installation. To secure the curtains you will need to install two curtain rods - upper and lower. Using profile cornices will be the best option for this.
In addition, for additional decoration of curtains, various elements are used in the form of stones, tiebacks, unusual tassels, which will give the room additional comfort and grace.
Recommendations for choosing attic curtains
In the process of choosing curtains for the attic, you should first of all take into account the specifics of this room, which is distinguished by the presence of windows with:
- a certain slope angle;
- non-traditional shapes and sizes;
- the presence of folding frames;
- plenty of daylight.
To make a protective screen that is installed on a window and provides protection from sunlight, we recommend using fabrics with a dense texture that does not transmit light. In addition, one of the properties of the material should be dust repellent.
The atmosphere and comfort of people who constantly or periodically stay in it depends on the correct selection of curtains for the attic room. It is not recommended to use curtains or curtains of complex configuration for the attic. The main features of attic curtains are their simplicity and conciseness. In addition, they should fit perfectly into the overall design style of the attic.
Pleated curtains for attic windows photo and choice
The use of pleated curtains in the interior of the attic is quite common. This interior element is a type of horizontal blinds, and consists of a profile on which a pre-pleated canvas is fixed.
To fix the fabric to the base, special cords are used, with the help of which it is possible to open the window, collecting the fabric, and close it. When purchasing pleated curtains, you should pay attention to options designed specifically for roof windows.
Since they have special accessories that, during operation, help simplify the procedure for opening them. Therefore, the presence of extensions, control bars or special handles on pleated curtains for roof windows is mandatory.
The special structure of pleated curtains helps protect the attic from daylight at any time of the day. In addition, this version of curtains can decorate the interior of the attic with its attractive appearance. In a hardware store you can choose pleated curtains of any color and shade; there are also models with a drawing or photo applied to the surface. It is possible to purchase pleated curtains, which have a pearlescent or metallized coating, which enhances the reflection of daylight.
In addition, it is possible to purchase curtains that consist of two parts. One fabric is responsible for providing slight darkening of the room; it transmits a little ultraviolet rays into the attic. The second darkening option helps to completely protect the room from light. For the manufacture of these curtains, fabric with a special impregnation is used, which facilitates the procedure for caring for them and helps the curtains repel dust and moisture.
There are two options for controlling pleated curtains, the first is corded, which involves the use of a special rope with which the curtains are opened and closed. Day-night models are characterized by the presence of two laces, one of which regulates the opening of the first strip of fabric, another one - opens the second strip.
The handle, fixed at the top or bottom, allows you to adjust the height of raising or lowering the curtains. If the window is too high, then additional extensions or control bars are provided to open it.
Attic roller blinds - use in the interior
The use of roller blinds in the attic is primarily associated with the design of window openings of non-standard shape. Roller blinds are similar to blinds, as they are made from a sheet of a certain material that closely touches the glass. If you choose curtains in a pastel or transparent white shade, they will practically not disrupt the interior design, as they will be invisible on the window.
Although, for those who like bright colors, there is a wide variety of roller blinds in different colors and shades. For the manufacture of curtains, materials such as linen, satin, cotton or silk are used. Some models of curtains are made from expensive fabric, which is characterized by a high level of resistance to mechanical damage and external irritants in the form of moisture, dust, sun, etc.
Roller blinds for roof windows are equipped with special mechanisms for raising and lowering them. The presence of a spring mechanism ensures smooth adjustment of the curtains. It allows you to fix the canvas on a window of any shape. In addition, the presence of roller blinds will not affect the opening of the window itself.
To control and adjust the curtains, both spring elements and a standard chain are used. However, the first option is more convenient and reliable in operation. Please note that if you plan to install roller blinds in the attic, then it is preferable to monitor the moisture in it, since it should not be too high. In addition, it is not allowed to place curtains in front of an open fire. To remove dust from the surface, use a brush or vacuum cleaner. To wash too dirty fabric, just use a damp sponge and soap solution. To ensure that roller blinds serve you for many years, it is recommended to lubricate their mechanism with silicone solutions from time to time.
How to install fabric curtains on a roof window
One of the standard options for decorating an attic room is the use of fabric curtains. Since windows are often located on the ceiling or wall, it is recommended to use special fasteners to hold the curtains on them.
To ensure that the curtains are easily held on the wall, we recommend using these installation tips:
- the use of two cornices - on one, the curtain holder will be installed on top, and on the second from below, the curtain will be fixed at the bottom of the window;
- making two or three holes that will string the curtain on a rod; this design will make it easier to move the curtain aside and open the windows;
- the use of special Velcro - with their help it is possible to bring to life the most extraordinary ideas for combining curtains;
- fixing curtains with the help of decorative auxiliary elements - in this case, it would be appropriate to use ribbons, tiebacks or clips.
In addition, there are not only internal options for curtains for the attic, but also external screens that protect the window not only from light, but also from precipitation.
External screens are divided into two types:
- some of them are called marqueses;
- and the second - roller shutters.
To make the first option, fiberglass or polyvinyl chloride is used. This version of curtains is wound on a roller; to protect them from moisture and other external factors, a special polymer-based coating is used.
By using awnings, it is possible to provide reliable protection of the room from the sun and excessive heat. It is necessary to leave a small area between the curtain fabric and the window in the form of a ventilation gap. In addition, another advantage of awnings is that they protect the window from rain and prevent the appearance of unpleasant sound when drops hit the glass.
The second option in the form of roller shutters is a combination of two aluminum panels that form a continuous structure. There is a single-layer version of roller shutters that do not contain a heat-insulating chamber. The second option is characterized by the presence of insulation and soundproofing material, thus, the use of such roller shutters can improve the comfort of staying in the attic room.
When choosing a particular curtain option, you should pay attention to models that are adjustable using a remote control. Thus, it will be possible to significantly simplify the process of their operation.

Children's room
It is not advisable to use complex colors and patterns. Canvases made from natural fabric in calm shades, with their elegant simplicity, will add tenderness to the interior, both in a room for a girl and a boy.
Cornices used on non-standard shaped windows
Cornices of regular shape are not suitable for decorating dormer or sloping windows. And the right choice of cornice is half of successful interior design.
Option 1. Choose a regular cornice, but attach it at an angle. This option is only possible if the location of the window allows the installation of a cornice. Curtains are securely fixed using rings or brackets, since the curtains must be stationary.
You can regulate the degree of light entering the room by using grabbers.
The curtain fabric chosen is light and drapery.
Option 2. Point suspensions. They can be used to create any form. Hangers can be attached to the wall in any order and at different distances from each other, depending on personal wishes.
They can follow the contour of the frame, or, conversely, “argue” with it.
Option 3. Ceiling baguettes. One of the most elementary methods of fastening. Thanks to baguettes, you can hide numerous elements of fixing the canvases that are used in the design of such premises.
Traditional curtains go well with other types of curtains.
Option 4. Pleated blinds and curtains. Truly, there is nothing simpler. The material from which such “curtains” are made can be very different: from paper to bamboo.
For attics, choose pleated curtains with a special coating to create a reflective effect.
Curtain mounting options
They should highlight the appearance of the curtains and ensure comfortable use.
On the eyelets
Fastening with grommets is suitable for inclined windows of the correct shape, with a lock or an upper and lower cornice.
Velcro
Allows you to easily design complex-shaped dormer windows. Using Velcro, the curtain is securely fixed in the desired position.
On hooks
This fastening does not imply the use of a cornice. Wall hooks are ideal for lightweight curtains.
The photo shows a bedroom and attic windows with curtains on hooks.
Design options
In the photo you can see several spectacular options for decorating roof windows using curtains. The most popular, as already mentioned, are roller blinds. The material, a twisted roll, is attached above the window opening, and a string is placed below. Curtains can be controlled in several ways. To avoid sagging of the curtain, it must be secured with guides. It is worth noting that a large number of possible solutions for decorating roof windows with roller blinds will allow you to create an interior in almost any style.
Roller blinds can be effectively combined with regular curtains or tulle. You will be able to freely adjust the light flux, and the attic space will have a sophisticated and elegant appearance.
An excellent solution for decorating windows in the attic would be blinds, which will not only decorate the room, but also protect it from the penetration of sunlight. Today you have the opportunity to choose blinds of any design, which will differ in design, format and color. This type of curtains can be made of plastic, fabric and even aluminum.
A classic solution in the design of skylights is the use of fabric curtains. They are ideal for facade-type window structures, although you can adapt them for inclined windows. To sew such curtains, choose a material of sufficient density so that it does not fade and has dust-repellent properties.
It is necessary to attach fabric curtains to attic windows on two cornices at once, one of which will be located at the bottom, and the other at the top. Modern profile cornices are perfect for this. At the same time, you can create original window decorations. Eg. making something like a sail on the window.
The peculiarity of profile cornices is their light weight and ease of use. They are made of aluminum profiles with internal tracks for curtain hooks and runners. Such systems do not require special maintenance and are easy to operate. A soft metal strip is especially useful if you had to deal with a non-standard window shape. Also, profiles with different structures can be used as the main element for lifting and sliding types of curtains. Those interested can evaluate a variety of profile curtain rods on their website.
We sew ourselves
You can buy all the types of curtains for roof windows described above or make them yourself, following the photo and video instructions. You can also purchase ready-made products, decorating them with decorative elements made yourself. Original tiebacks, fabric flowers, tassels - all this will make the window decoration very cozy and elegant.
If you decide to make the entire curtain yourself, then first determine its length and width. Take measurements of the window opening and multiply the resulting width by 3.5 or 2.5. Keep in mind, the thinner the material you use, the higher the number you should multiply by. Determine the height by how low the curtain will hang and the method of attaching it to the cornice.
Now all you have to do is choose the fabric, cut and sew the curtains. Even the simplest model will become an exclusive decoration for your attic window. You can attach the curtain to eyelets or fabric loops - the original window design is ready.
Decor ideas
Decorating curtains should be not only beautiful, but also functional.
Lambrequins
They will add luxury to the attic space. However, such decor can only be used if there are high ceilings and an abundance of natural light.
Tiebacks
For traditional curtains, tiebacks are often used. They not only create aesthetic folds, but also allow you to conveniently fix the canvas.
Holders
These decorative elements allow you to adjust the level of lighting in the room. In addition, when they are used, the curtains form a certain silhouette.
An easy way to make curtains for skylights with your own hands
Do not hurry. This is completely useless when it comes to the most important element of attic decor. Approach the matter carefully and with creativity - this is the only way you will achieve the desired result. Of course, such a project requires at least minimal sewing skills - it is unlikely that a beginner will be able to handle such a volume of fabric with accurate calculations the first time.
- It all starts with the choice of materials. Use only high-quality fabrics that, as a result of the work, will look exactly like in catalogs or your ideas, if this is an original concept. Calculate the quantity and purchase 20-30% more fabric - this practically guarantees that there will be enough material under any circumstances.
- Carefully measure your window opening or openings. It’s good if the windows are the same, so you can use one pattern for all the curtains. Don’t be afraid to leave a lot of fabric for draping, as everything unnecessary can be removed in the process without loss.
- Start transferring the pattern onto the fabric. Here, too, you don’t need to spare any effort; mark all the details and little things with chalk. After carefully marking, cut out the pattern pieces, but don't forget to take into account the space for seams and the need to hem the fabric at the very last stages.
- When sewing the finished parts, do not forget to take into account the characteristics of the fabric from which your future curtains are made. Professionals, as well as factory curtain manufacturers, often use different types of closed seams to bring the appearance of the back side as close as possible to the front side. After preparations, sew the fabric.
- Finish all seams and edges, as well as the top where the part for fastenings will be located. All imperfections and minor mistakes that you may have made during the process can be easily hidden at this stage - you just need a little care.
- Take care of the fastenings. Their type is not important - you can choose any one, from loops to eyelets, the main thing is that you personally find it convenient to work with it later. You don't have to worry about top mounts in the early stages, as adding them doesn't affect the overall piece.
- Now you need to hang the almost finished product on the cornice. This is necessary so that you can clearly examine all the possible minor flaws in your work and immediately eliminate them - for example, straighten the length.
- If everything is fine, then you can leave the curtain hanging in its rightful place, and in case of minor problems such as damaged seams, remove it, fix the problem and hang it back.
