Multifunctional loft beds for adults, features and types

The interior of the room depends on its size, functionality and preferences of the residents. If the room is small in size, or you need to combine several functional areas in one place, many choose a loft bed for adults with the most suitable structure and design. The upper “floor” of furniture is intended for sleeping; the lower zone may contain a desk, cabinets or a sofa. This planning solution is ideal for owners of modern studio apartments and small rooms.

Product Features and Benefits

Models with a multi-tiered design are most often used in children's rooms. Products for adults are large in size and have a neutral design. The main structural elements of loft beds are:

  1. The frame determines the strength and reliability of the entire structure. Its racks are made of thick wooden beams or metal pipes. Stability in the horizontal plane is achieved by fastening the structure to the wall at several points using special clamps included in the kit.
  2. A sleeping place with a mattress base made of a solid sheet of chipboard (plywood) or a lattice of lamellas. A solid one will be reliable, but will not provide the necessary ventilation for the mattress. The lattice base does not interfere with normal air exchange and prevents the mattress from sagging.

The main advantages of multi-tiered pieces of furniture with a sleeping area at the top include:

  1. Space saving, which is important for small rooms.
  2. Modern design that allows you to create a unique interior and a cozy atmosphere.
  3. Multifunctionality of the design, determined by the presence of various shelves, drawers, cabinets and cabinets at the bottom of the loft bed or inside the stairs for convenient storage of things.
  4. Saving money on purchasing a table, sofa or cabinet separately.
  5. A wide range of models from different manufacturers made of wood, plastic, chipboard, metal.
  6. Long service life.
  7. Possibility to choose the optimal height design. Products with a second tier of at least 1.6 m provide a large amount of free space on the first level, where a work area is equipped or a sofa is installed. Low models are optimal for rooms with low ceilings. On the first tier of such products there is a storage system.

The main disadvantage of bunk beds is considered to be the unsafe use of a sleeping place located at a height. People with diseases of the musculoskeletal system will not be able to climb stairs. And in the absence of safety rails, there is a risk of falling while sleeping.

The most reliable loft bed models for adults are made to order. They use a flat staircase with wide steps and a handrail, and the height of the safety sides is at least 40 cm. During installation, the frame is fixed to the wall at 8-10 points to increase the stability of the structure.

Also, the disadvantages often include the high cost of a multi-tier attic bed compared to a regular one. However, the presence of storage boxes or a desktop on the first tier allows you to save on the purchase of these furniture elements, so the price issue is a variable minus.

Installation options

Even for a fairly spacious bedroom, an attic bed can be a very comfortable purchase. And even more so in the case of a small room in a Khrushchev building. This design allows you to rationally plan the installation of other furniture on the freed square meters of space.

On the first tier, under the space of the attic bed, you can organize different zones that are relevant for a particular family:

  • work area with a computer or desk, pull-out side drawers, shelves. Due to the certain intimacy and distance of the zone from the other space of the room, working here will be incredibly comfortable and calm;
  • a relaxation area with a soft sofa or a pair of armchairs and a glass coffee table. Both options can be used for relaxation and recuperation, watching television programs, movies, reading books, magazines;
  • Another idea that is relevant for small apartments is organizing a dressing room in the space under the bed in the attic. Thus, you can easily and quickly organize the storage of clothes and shoes, hiding them from the eyes of guests at home.

Bring new sensations to an ordinary space by choosing an original loft design for adults.

Varieties

The range of loft beds for adults from different manufacturers includes various products. When considering a specific model, it is recommended to study its advantages and disadvantages. The choice is usually made according to 2 criteria - the area of the bed and the specifics of the design.

By number of beds

Varieties of fashionable furniture in this parameter are no different from the usual bed sizes. There are also single, one-and-a-half and double models:

  1. A single loft bed for adults has dimensions of 0.7 x 1.8; 0.7 x 1.9; 0.7 x 2.0 m. Products with a bed length of less than 2 meters are suitable for children or teenagers. The width of the sofa can be any.
  2. One-and-a-half models are offered with dimensions of 1.1 x 1.8; 1.1 x 1.9; 1.1 x 2 m. Such a sleeping place will be comfortable for one person to rest.
  3. A double adult bed with a loft can have dimensions: 1.4 x 1.8; 1.4 x 1.9; 1.4 x 2; 1.5 x 2.1 m.

If none of the products of standard dimensions fits a particular room, the design can be ordered according to individual measurements. The length of the bed should be 12-13 cm greater than the height of the person for whom the bed is intended.

For comfortable use of the sleeping area, the distance between its surface and the ceiling must be at least 0.7 m.

By design

Depending on the design features of bunk furniture, the following types of products are distinguished:

  1. Loft bed with work area. A classic model in which the space on the first tier under the bed is allocated for a desk or computer desk. Under the tabletop there are drawers or a cabinet, a stand for the system unit. If the structure is of low height, the work area may be located next to the sleeping place. Some models provide a retractable table.
  2. Loft bed with sofa underneath. This piece of furniture is intended for daytime relaxation or used as a sleeping place. Its design can be straight or angular. The base of the sofa can be stationary or folding. The traditional “book” mechanism is convenient and reliable. Roll-out models are suitable for a good night's sleep. The Eurobook easily unfolds and forms a flat base.
  3. Loft bed with wardrobe or shelves. The frame of such products should be as strong as possible. A large number of things are stored in cabinets and shelves, the load on the base is high. The interior space of the cabinet is filled with shelves, hooks, and a rod. Depending on the mechanism for opening the doors, there are: hinged wardrobes, sliding compartments, models with folding doors.

Separately, we can note exclusive products that are created according to individual sketches. The design, material of manufacture and content are determined by the customer himself. However, it is worth considering that the cost of such models is always high.

Self-production

Before you start making your own loft bed, you need to decide on the type of its design.

Table 2. Types of structures.

Construction typeDescription
On four (or more) supportsThis design is independent and self-sufficient, since it is not connected to the walls or ceiling. It can be installed anywhere in the room, even in the center. The supports ensure the reliability and stability of the attic bed.

The structure is partially supported by the wall

The support for such a structure can be a load-bearing wall in the room. The flooring is supported by a beam horizontally screwed to the wall. The opposite part of the bed rests on posts.

Ceiling mount

This method of fastening frees up the space under the bed as much as possible due to the lack of supports. But this method of fixing an attic bed can only be used if there is a reinforced reinforced concrete ceiling that can withstand a heavy load.

Combined type of fastening

The bed is fixed by resting it on the walls and fixing it in one place to the ceiling. In the second case, you can fix one side of the bed to the wall, and the opposite two corners to the ceiling.

The process of self-assembling an attic bed for adults occurs in several stages.

Stage 1: making a drawing

Having decided on the type of structure and the method of its fastening, we begin to develop a detailed drawing that will provide detailed information about the dimensions of the product, the quantity and dimensions of each part, and the methods of their fastening.

The drawing can be done in a special computer program

If the structure is not an independent object and will be fixed to the walls or ceiling, then the drawing shows its location in space, taking into account the free space near the bed, the location of switches and sockets, windows and doorways.

It is necessary to determine the size of the sleeping place based on the standard sizes of mattresses, so that in the future there will be no problems with purchasing the main attribute of any bed.

Adult mattress sizes

Stage 2: purchasing materials

The material for the manufacture of the frame in the case under consideration will be timber 50 x 150 mm. The structure will be attached to the wall on one side. If you plan to make a bed on four or more supports, then use a beam with a section of 100 x 100 mm.

Woodworking tools

To arrange the flooring, use a board measuring 25 x 100 mm.

To fix the parts together, it is recommended to use metal fittings in the form of plates, corners, rafter hangers, which are used for roofing and wooden house construction. Such accessories should be purchased not from a furniture store, but from a hardware store.

Roofing accessories

Nickel-plated screws are used as fastening elements - they hold more securely in the body of the wood and allow, if necessary, to easily disassemble the structure. Anchor bolts will be required to secure the support beam to the load-bearing wall.

Stage 3: assembly of the structure

Table 3. Frame production.

IllustrationDescription
Step 1A support beam is fixed horizontally to the load-bearing wall. The spacing of the anchor bolts is 400 mm.
Step 2Rafter hangers are attached to the support beam on the wall using screws or self-tapping screws to secure the cross beams.
Step 3Using T-shaped metal plates, a structure is assembled from supports and a horizontal supporting beam.
Step 4Opposite supporting elements are connected by transverse beams made of timber with a section of 50 x 150 mm. To do this, they are fixed in suspensions.
Step 5The lags are fixed using self-tapping screws.
Step 6It is not recommended to use a tongue-and-groove board for making flooring, since the flooring is monolithic, without gaps or cracks.
Step 7To ensure ventilation of the sleeping area, experts recommend using a regular, straight board, fixed with a gap of 5-7 mm.

Stage 4: making the stairs

To make the string of stairs and steps, timber with a minimum thickness of 30 mm is used. A timber that was used as a lag is suitable.

The string is trimmed to securely fix it at the top of the bed

On the outside of the string, using a building level, markings are applied so that the steps are located at the same distance.

Manufacturing materials

The reliability and performance properties of the product depend on the material from which the frame is made. According to this principle, all attics are divided into the following groups:

  1. Metal models. They are distinguished by their strength and durability, have a low cost, and are accessible to everyone. Minimalist design allows you to use such designs in any interior style. Hollow metal pipes are used for the base of the frame, which reduces the weight of the structure. Powder coating and coloring protect the metal from corrosion. However, this raw material will always be cold and not very pleasant to touch.
  2. Products made from natural wood. The furniture looks respectable and reliable. The beautiful texture of natural wood is emphasized by transparent varnishes. This bed will last for many years and will be absolutely safe for health. However, the wooden structure is very heavy; it is not recommended to install it on weak floors.
  3. Models based on wood chipboards and MDF. The material made from wood chips and a binder component has satisfactory strength, but low-quality boards emit formaldehyde, a substance harmful to health. Furniture made from this raw material is offered in unusual designs, different colors, and its cost is always affordable. The slabs make spacious storage systems and modular elements. The frame can be additionally reinforced with wooden beams or metal guides.

Wood boards that are safe for health are designated E-1. In such products, the emission of formaldehyde is minimal, so they can be used in living rooms. This parameter must be indicated in the certificate or passport of the furniture.

High-quality models made of wood or metal will last much longer than loft beds made from laminated chipboard. When choosing a suitable option, it is worth considering not only its cost, but also the expected load corresponding to the weight of the people who will occupy the upper berth.

Types of frames for double loft beds

The basis of the product is its frame. The reliability, safe operation and durability of the structure as a whole depend on how well it is made.

A suspended structure without supports in a studio apartment does not attract attention

Frames for adult loft beds are high (1600 - 1800 mm) and low (1300 - 1600 mm). The height of the structure is chosen depending on the height of the ceiling and the method of using the lower part of the structure. So, when organizing a workplace or living room area, it should be possible to straighten up to your full height.

The supports can be designed as a bookcase

Note! The distance from the top point of the berth to the ceiling should not be less than 700 mm.

Interior of a small room
Depending on the material of manufacture, the frame of a double loft bed has specific performance properties.

Table 1. Materials for manufacturing.

Frame materialDescription

Metal

It is the most popular option, characterized by its affordable cost, high strength and durability. For the manufacture of modern frames, metal pipes that are hollow inside are used - this makes the structure as light as possible while maintaining its strength and stability.

Natural wood

An ideal material for arranging a sleeping place, it is environmentally friendly, reliable, durable and has a unique appearance that creates a warm and cozy atmosphere in the interior.

Chipboard

It is characterized by low cost, availability, ease of processing and a wide range of shades, especially when using laminated chipboard. However, in terms of strength and durability, this material is seriously inferior to metal and natural wood.

The convenience and comfort of an adult loft bed largely depends on the quality of the sleeping space and its size. So, a double bed is 1600 x 2200 mm, for one person the parameters are 1200 x 1900 (2000) mm.

Drawer steps allow you to solve the storage problem in a small room

It is also necessary to take into account the type of base for the mattress: it can be solid (made of natural wood or chipboard) or slatted (in the form of metal or wooden slats). In the first case, it is advisable to provide perforations in the panels, which will ensure natural air circulation. In the second case, the presence of slats ensures unhindered passage of air and prevents the mattress from sagging.

Functional design with seating area below

Note! Since the design of the loft bed provides for the location of the sleeping place at a considerable height from the floor, then, like children's models, it must be equipped with protective sides with a height of at least 300 - 400 mm. The material used is metal, wood or chipboard. In this case, the mattress should be located lower.

Ladder requirements

The comfort of using the attic directly depends on the reliability and safety of the stairs. Many models of such furniture use an attached structure. It can be installed on either side of the bed or removed if necessary. It takes up little space, but is not very safe.

If the product will be used by young people, you can choose a vertical staircase design. It also takes up a minimum amount of space and can have thin rungs that do not spoil the appearance of the furniture. However, you need to move along it very carefully.

A more comfortable and safe option are inclined staircase structures. A loft bed with two berths can have a low level of inclination of the steps and a large area. If there is not much free space inside the room, then a design with a large angle of inclination and narrow steps will be optimal.

Podium ladders are used in loft bed models that have a large built-in storage system. Boxes are located at the base of each step; they are filled with clothes, shoes, and books. Using this design will be safe and comfortable. When choosing the appropriate type of staircase, you need to take into account the available space in the room and the need for additional storage boxes.

If there are children in the family, handrails are required. The material from which the steps are made should not be slippery. Options are considered safe when you can fully place your foot on the step.

Interior use

The multifunctional attic structure can fit into any interior. But it has maximum benefits in small spaces. If the bedroom area is small, then you can arrange a separate room under the double attic. It can be used as a work office or relaxation area. It is recommended to make walls from translucent materials, such as plastic or polycarbonate. It is better if they are sliding or mobile, then if necessary they can be removed.

Creative people whose apartment does not have a separate room for studying can arrange a studio with good lighting and ventilation under their sleeping place. Depending on your hobbies, there are musical instruments, an easel or a computer inside.

If the apartment is decorated in a modern style as a studio, then the dining and relaxation areas are often combined. By installing a table with chairs under the bed, you can organize a cozy corner for lunch or tea drinking, while saving valuable space. Also, a large storage system can be placed under the attic in the studio, so that there is no need to install cabinets and cabinets in the rest of the room.

Modern attic structures with sleeping space not only look attractive, but are also multi-functional, allowing you to experiment with design and decor, creating a cozy “room within a room” for yourself.

Loft bed for adults: structure and design features

A loft bed for adults is a two-story furniture structure, on the second tier of which there are one or two sleeping places. The lower floor, depending on the configuration, can be either empty or with a work, sports or dressing area.

The advantages of adult loft beds include:

  • saving space in tight spaces;
  • the ability to place both a sleeping area and any other area on the same area: work, sports, dressing room;
  • original design: a correctly selected bed will add variety to your interior.

A double loft bed for adults is an excellent option for young families living in one-room apartments and studios. In spacious housing, such furniture can be used to organize a guest room.

Adult loft beds differ from children's models primarily in their height. In addition, they are able to withstand much larger loads - up to 200 kg.

The design consists of two main elements:

  • frame;
  • sleeping place.
