Owners of small apartments, faced with the problem of rational use of space, pay special attention to compact and multifunctional furniture. For example, a sleeping place that transforms from a closet will allow you to save free space in a small room.

Features and Benefits

This design has quite a lot of advantages. The main one is the ability to use the product for rational organization of space in a small room. The model allows you to simultaneously acquire several pieces of furniture at once - a comfortable sleeping place, a closet, shelves, drawers, a table.

Typically, this type of furniture is used to accommodate two children. When they live together, it is difficult to provide each of them with a separate comfortable area to rest at night. A two-story children's bed is a design that includes two sleeping places located one above the other and built-in storage drawers. This furniture is very compact.

A loft bed with a bed on the second tier is comfortable for one person. Below there is space for storing things. Such a compact structure allows you to free up space in the room. Besides this, it has many other advantages:

  • functionality - used as a bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers, shelving, often there is also a work desk below;
  • versatility - placement is possible in rooms for different purposes;
  • recommended for children from 3 years old, convenient for teenagers and adults;
  • with its help you can divide the space into zones and highlight a children's corner, which is important for a one-room apartment;
  • budget cost - this design will cost less than two separate beds and a wardrobe;
  • A variety of models allows you to choose the appropriate option and design.

The disadvantages of such furniture include bulkiness and stationary nature. It is attached to the wall, so it is difficult to move the structure to another place. In addition, the inconvenience is associated with height - the child may fall, and if the ceiling is low, there is a risk of hitting him with his head. If an inconvenient staircase is chosen, going down it becomes unsafe.

The simplest designs with linear placement of beds on top of each other and a wardrobe on the side are often installed in camps or hostels.

Folding mechanism for transformable loft beds

The bunk folding bed moves into the closet using a lifting device. For synchronous folding and unfolding, manufacturers recommend using a hinged connection of levels.

There are several types of lifting mechanisms:

  • The Italian spring system will withstand loads from 50 to 120 kg. After pressing, the springs stretch, compensating for the weight of the folding bed. The coil spring block is suitable for vertical and horizontal folding systems. It stands out for its durability and reliability.
  • The German gas shock absorber system can withstand 20 thousand movement cycles, which equals approximately 50 years of daily use. The silent and smooth gas damper becomes the key to impeccable service. The power of the gas lift is calculated taking into account the dimensions of the sleeping area. If we are talking about a bunk children's bed, equipment with a power of 1400N or 1600N for each bed will be sufficient.

The gas damper mechanism must be 400-600N more powerful for beds folding in a vertical position, which makes it advantageous to use it in bunk structures folding horizontally. A loft bed built into a closet on a spring block will last longer, since there are fewer parts in the mechanical system that can fail under the influence of friction.

Popular models

They produce different versions of bunk beds. They differ in configuration, closet location, and number of beds. You need to choose a model depending on the characteristics of the room and the purpose of the furniture:

  1. Classic bunk bed with two beds. Sleeping areas can be located parallel or at an angle to one another. The cabinet is usually located at the end, sometimes on both sides. Some models are equipped with a work desk. It is better to choose such a bed for two children.
  2. Option with two cabinets on both sides. Convenient for two children, provides each user with separate storage space.
  3. A bed with a table and a wardrobe, equipped with one sleeping place. It's called the attic. Convenient for teenagers or adults, compact. Storage space is located at the end or occupies part of the lower tier.
  4. Corner model with workplace and wardrobe. This furniture is comfortable for two children or adults. The beds are located at an angle. The cabinet serves as additional support for the second tier, and the rest of the space is occupied by a table, shelves, and drawers. There are designs in which both beds are located on top at an angle to one another. Downstairs there are spacious cabinets, shelving, a chest of drawers, and a table.
  5. Wall bed. It is best chosen for a large room. This structure is quite long and is usually placed along one wall. The beds are moved towards each other. Under the second tier there are storage systems and a table, and above the bed there are hanging shelves or racks. Cabinets in this model can be located on both sides.

A variant of this design is a transforming bed. It consists of a wall with cabinets, shelves, and drawers. One of the elements folds out, turning into a two-level sleeping place.

Facade of a bunk folding wardrobe bed

The lift-up loft bed is distinguished by its complex design, which is based on a carefully thought-out combination of production technologies for cabinet and upholstered furniture. Facades are made from composites or solid wood of different types. The other option is more expensive, but using environmentally friendly solid wood will make it possible to increase the working life of the furniture.

Design of a bunk folding bed:

  • The walls on the sides are made of solid wood, MDF or laminated chipboard with a width of 20 to 60 cm and act as a pencil case for the bed when folded. They are rigidly attached to the wall and floor, as they serve as the basis for the installation of other furniture elements.
  • The lower and upper stocks are attached to the side walls using a spring mechanism or gas shock absorbers.
  • Extension or built-in stairs make it possible to move between tiers of the bed. In cabinet mode, the steps serve as shelving.

Additionally, the bed closet is equipped with different shelves. When folded, they can be used to store various things (books, home appliances, collectibles and decorative items). When the sleeping area is unfolded, the racks turn into support legs for the bed.

Wide variability in terms of decor allows customers to select the furniture package on their own. Among the common additional options, it is necessary to note lighting, mattresses with orthopedic effect or LCD television panels, however, the use of similar decorative and practical components significantly increases the price of the product.

Shapes and sizes

A bunk bed most often has the standard dimensions (width and length) of a regular single model. Dimensions are chosen depending on the age of the person for whom it is intended and the area of the room. The models are suitable for children from 3 years old.

Modern bunk beds made of solid wood in the interior of a nursery

The width is usually no higher than 80–100 cm, and the length is 180–250 cm. The second parameter depends on the position of the cabinet. The height of the structure can also be different. For children, models are produced in which the second tier is located at a distance of 80–100 cm from the floor. At the same time, it will not be possible to place a stationary table or a spacious cabinet underneath. Typically, the workplace on such beds is retractable.

How to choose and where to place a bunk bed for adults, tips

Standard options for teenagers and adults have a height of 150 to 200 cm. It is impossible to go higher, since the ceiling from the bed must be at least 70 cm, otherwise the person will hit it with their head, and sleeping will be uncomfortable due to the stuffiness. For the same reason, the height from the bottom tier to the top should also be 70–80 cm.

The shape and size of cabinets may vary. They are made straight, corner and radius, with hinged and sliding doors. The height of the products depends on the location. If they are at the end of the bed or on the side, they can reach 2 m or reach the ceiling. The cabinet under the top tier usually has a height of 130–150 cm.

If you cannot find a bed in the size you need, it can be made to order.

Internal filling of the cabinet

To make the furniture convenient to use, you need to choose the right way to design the storage system. In addition to standard wardrobes, these can be chests of drawers with drawers of different sizes, options with closed or open shelves. There are several ways to place elements in relation to the bed:

  1. A model with a cabinet and drawers occupying the entire space of the lower tier. Such structures provide additional support for the bed on the second floor.
  2. If there is a bed below, the closet will be on the side, on one or both sides. It can be higher than the bed or the same size. Another option is to place it under the upper berth if the lower one is displaced or at an angle. There may be rods for clothes, shelves, and drawers inside. If the closet is at the end of the bed, this model cannot be placed in a corner.
  3. The corner one is convenient because approximately half of the space on the lower tier remains free. There are shelving and a seating area. But most often they make a table next to the corner cabinet for study and work. The disadvantage of this arrangement of the storage area is that the shelves are too deep.
  4. If the bed is only on the upper tier, a wardrobe can be located below. This option is convenient for teenagers or adults. The sliding wardrobe is compact and roomy, and can be equipped with shelves, baskets, drawers, and a hanging rod.

Characteristics of bunk beds with a table and wardrobe, review of models

The most convenient system is one that has shelves of different widths and drawers. You can store bedding and clothes on them. The elements are placed one above the other or at the bottom of the wardrobe. They are intended for small items and linen.

Design and placement

A bunk bed with a wardrobe must be harmoniously combined with all other furnishings. It should correspond to the general style of the room. The product may have different designs. Bright models are often made for children's rooms; neutral colors are suitable for teenagers or adults.

Children's bunk beds are decorated in different ways. They can be made in the form of a bus, fire truck, ship or rocket. Girls will love the design in the shape of a castle, tower or dollhouse.

When choosing and installing furniture, you need to pay attention to its safety. It must be made of high-quality, reliable materials. The upper berth must have sides 20 cm higher than the mattress. They are needed even if the bed is intended for an adult. And for small children, you can additionally install limiters. The staircase should be comfortable. It would be good if it was made in the form of a chest of drawers with a stepped arrangement of drawers. Such designs take up a lot of space, but are safer.

When placing a bunk bed, you need to take into account the features of the room. This design is bulky; most often it is placed along the wall in the corner. It is necessary to ensure that the furnishings do not cover the radiator. In some cases, you can use the product as a partition, placing it with its end facing the wall. Then it will divide the room into zones.

Oversized two-level structures are suitable only for placement in rooms with ceilings of at least 250 cm.

Two-level bed models are an excellent solution for small spaces. A wide range of furniture will allow you to choose the appropriate option for almost any room decor style. The main thing is to pay attention to the quality of materials and workmanship before purchasing, then the product will serve its owners for many years.

How a bunk wardrobe bed is transformed

The transformation mechanism is easy to use, thanks to which the 2 in 1 bunk wardrobe bed is used by both adults and children. The mattress and bed linen are securely attached to the base. To do this, specialized straps are used. There is no need to remove the mattress when folding.

The folding process consists of the following steps:

  • The lower sleeping position switches to sleep mode. To do this, you need to pull the warp, which is carefully placed on the legs converted from shelves.
  • The upper sleeping area is lowered.
  • Handrails and fences are raised to protect against falls from another tier.
  • An extension ladder is installed.

It takes a couple of minutes to transform the furniture. Even a small child can cope with a similar task. The fastening mechanisms must be checked very carefully when the folding bed is first used. The extension ladder must rest on the floor. The mattress is secured using straps and guards. It should not slide on the surface of the base.

A bed built into a closet is an excellent solution for arranging a small living space or a studio made in a minimalist style. Single bunks are often used as a spare sleeping area for guests. Spacious two-seater models are suitable for spouses, and two-tier structures are an excellent solution for children aged 6 to 18 years.
