Bedding size according to GOST standard
Since January 1, 2007, a general interstate standard for the size of bed linen has been introduced on the territory of the Russian Federation (GOST 31307–2005).
Based on this GOST, the same dimensions are used by the standardization bodies of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and other former republics of the Soviet Union. Linen set includes: 2 pillowcases, duvet cover, sheet. This list of bedding items is accepted as standard content; it is possible to sell it in incomplete configurations. The range of bed linen is divided into the following groups of sets:
- children's sets;
- family kits
- double sets
- euro kits
- one and a half sets.
The width and length of items in one set may vary, so you must carefully inspect the packaging of the headset. Otherwise, you can purchase a PCB that does not correspond to the dimensions of a pillow, mattress or blanket.

Family
Surely you have heard the designation related to bedding - “duet”, what is it? This is the so-called “family” set (more details at the link), it includes 2 “one and a half” duvet covers, 1 large sheet and 2-4 pillowcases. For a bed 160-180 cm. An excellent option when one of the bride and groom (or both) like to wrap themselves in a blanket.
The most common size of duvet covers in these bedding sets is 150x210, but if you want more, check out the Turkish duvet covers (160x220). But among Austrian products you can find short products. This is not a rule, but it is worth paying attention to this point.
For example, we made a table of bed linen size correspondence - a selection according to the standards of different countries.

European sizes KPB
The sizes of PBCs in European countries often differ from domestic ones. This should be taken into account when purchasing, because French products are designed for pillows 65 by 65 cm, German 80 by 80 cm, and Italian 50 by 70 cm.
Important! If you opted for Euro sizes, measure your pillows before purchasing a set.
Main markings from European manufacturers:
- single (or twin). Indicates a single bed set;
- extra long single. This is a one-and-a-half-bed set;
- double (or full). Name of the double set;
- queen Marking of oversized underwear. They mostly correspond to the Russian-made European kit;
- king size. Bed linen for extra large sleeping areas;
- baby bed Labeling of the newborn kit;
- Baby bed/Crib. Kids clothes.

Euro-maxi – King size
The largest type of bed linen, the dimensions of which are suitable for a bed 180 cm wide. The dimensions of the duvet cover are standard for all countries (220x240), the sheets may vary. The widest and longest are in Turkish sets - 270x310, 290x310, in Russian, on the contrary, most often 220x240.
Important! On packages of bed linen you can see the designation of the parameters as follows: 80x220+30, if we are talking about a sheet with an elastic band, and 50x70+5 (70x70+5), if we are talking about pillowcases with decorative trim.
It means:
- 80×220: the dimensions of the sheet for the bed and +30: the height of the sides that fit around the sides of the mattress.
- 50x70 are the dimensions of the pillowcases and +5 is the width of the decorative edging on them.

Children's bedding sizes
Sets for children's beds ( for a child over 3 years old ) are usually made with a mattress size of 56 by 118 cm. In such a set, the sheet has a size of 120 by 170 cm , a sheet with an elastic band 60 by 120 cm, a pillow measuring 40 by 60 cm, and duvet cover 100 by 120 cm.

Round sheets with elastic
Beds and sofas are not always square or rectangular. Recently, rounded products have become popular. Some manufacturers create round sheets especially for them.
The dimensions of a crib for newborns are 75x75, 90x90 cm. For a round mattress on a bed for adults, the sheet parameters will be 200x200, 210x210, and 220x220 cm.
Such models are always equipped with an elastic band (with or without a skirt). This is due to the fact that it is difficult to evenly tuck a sheet without elastic under a round mattress, and during use the bed will constantly become uneven.
Tips for choosing
In order to decide whether the bedding set you like is suitable for you, you need to consider it according to the following criteria.
Measuring the blanket and pillow
You need to take a measuring tape or tape measure in your hands to measure the sleeping area, pillow and blanket.
The optimal sheet size is the width of the mattress + 80–100 centimeters. This sheet is easy to tuck in and does not hang over the corners of the bed. To prevent the blanket from crumpling inside the duvet cover and creating “empty corners,” you should choose it 5–6 centimeters larger than the blanket itself. For square-shaped pillows, it is recommended to select pillowcases measuring 70 by 70 cm, and for those with a rectangular shape - size 70 by 50 cm.
Material
The most hypoallergenic fabrics, which absorb moisture and remove it from the body, are considered natural.
- Cotton-based fabrics (satin, calico) are inexpensive, easy to care for, wash well, and do not slip. They shrink when washed and may wrinkle.
- Linen. Has high wear resistance. But it can be unpleasant to the body, is difficult to iron and wrinkles a lot.
- Silk. Buying such a set will hit your wallet hard, but this material is worth it: lightweight, easy to care for, pleasant to the body.
Material Density
An important factor when choosing fabric for PCB is density. This parameter affects the service life and durability of the purchased set. Look at the fabric in the light; if it is translucent and the threads are woven diagonally, then it is better to refuse to purchase it. After a few washes, the linen will simply lose its appearance and become deformed.
If it is difficult to understand the density in the light, then carefully read the label in which the manufacturer prescribes the density of the material. What is fabric density? This is the number of threads that went into making one square centimeter of material. It must be at least 60 threads per this area. More detailed article about the density of fabrics for bed linen.
Lower density is typical for cambric (25 threads), cotton and linen (about 40–50 threads). But Turkish silk and synthetic fabrics have a density of up to 80 threads per 1 cm2. Fabrics with a high weave density are silk (China), percale. The density of satin varies from 120 to 300 threads per 1 m2. Japanese silk has the highest density. It reaches a frequency of 300 threads per square centimeter.
Manufacturer fame
It is much better to overpay, but buy bed linen from a quality manufacturer than cheap, homemade and produced in unsanitary conditions. It will be safe for health, high quality and durable.
Seams and threads
A high-quality product is stitched with a special linen seam, which will not chafe the skin and will firmly connect all the parts together. If a visual inspection reveals crooked seams, protruding threads and shaggy edges, then it is better to refuse such a purchase. It will simply “fall apart” at the seams during the first wash. The threads for sewing the set are exactly the same color as the set. They are dense, do not fray or stick out. Remember: High-quality bed linen is made from a single piece of material; there are no additional seams or joints.
Smell
When purchasing laundry, it should not have a strong chemical smell. The only acceptable scent: textile. Smelling dyes are the first sign of a manufacturer’s attempt to save on quality. If, when touched, the paint remains on your hands, then it is better not to use such a set.
Color spectrum
Inspect the “face” and “back” of the material. If there is a strong difference in the intensity of the dye, then most likely such linen will fade during washing and very soon become faded. Read the label; if the set can be washed at 60 degrees, then the dye is of high quality. Such linen practically does not fade and will not fade for a long time.
These are the main markings that are indicated on bedding sets:
- Bedspread (bedcover). The blanket covers the pillows and reaches the floor.
- Duvet. Name of the blanket.
- Duvet cover. The sheet, which replaces the duvet cover in American sets, is attached to the blanket.
- Mattress protection or Mattress pad - mattress pad.
- Pillow. Pillow designation.
- Pillowcase. Pillowcase designation.
- Pillow sham. Pillowcase intended for decorative purposes.
- fitted sheets. Designation of a sheet fastened at the edges with an elastic band.
- fitted valance. Designation of a sheet with an elastic band, trimmed with ruffles. Hides the space under the bed.
Suitable - not suitable
Now let's talk about how to determine the size of bed linen that is right for you. When choosing, you must take into account the parameters of all its elements at once. Let's start with the sheets it can be:
- Normal. The ideal option is the width of the bed + the total height of the mattress with an increase of about 5 cm, excessive lengths and widths are acceptable: the larger the fabric, the softer it is and the less it is lost.
- Chapter. In this case, the dimensions corresponding to the size of the bed are indicated on the packaging. That is, if the sheet is designed for a 140x200 mattress, you will see these numbers. In addition, the height of the side is indicated (equal to the height of the mattress for which the product is intended).
A set with an elastic sheet will likely cost more than a set with a regular sheet. Such an overpayment will be fully justified by the ease of use of bed linen - the elastic band secures the linen well on the mattress, preventing it from moving to the side. Read more about the parameters and types of sheets in another article.
Secondly, the size of the blanket. When choosing a duvet cover, consider:
- Reserve for possible losses. For pure cotton and linen, it is better to add 5-7 cm, if the composition contains a significant amount of synthetics, about 3 cm.
- Maximum error. Up to 10 cm is absolutely not critical in the operation of the product. That is, if you have a blanket with a width of 140 cm, and the duvet cover, judging by the inscription on the package, is 150 cm, this is normal. A difference of more than 10 cm may cause some inconvenience.
And finally, pillowcases. Always pay attention to their sizes. In Russian sets they are standard, 70x70 and 50x70 are found only as an addition (in Eurostandard and Euromaxi). The situation with the Chinese is usually the same. But bed linen produced in other countries can only contain pillowcases measuring 50x70.
Important: a good pillowcase should have a sufficiently deep valve (about 20 cm), or close with buttons or a zipper. Unfortunately, the packaging only indicates the type of fastening or the inscription “valve”, without indicating the dimensions.

Recommendations for caring for bed linen
Before the first use, the purchased bedding set must be washed. To do this, linen with colored prints must be washed at a temperature of no more than 30 degrees, and then you can wash at higher temperatures ( from 40 to 60 degrees ).
- To keep cotton fabrics and linen sets soft, it is better to hand wash them in cold water or soak them and then rinse them in cold water.
- Before each wash, bedding should be turned inside out. This way, the freshness of the colors will last longer. Before washing, it is necessary to place colored and white items in different piles; they are washed separately.
- Sets made from natural fabrics are washed separately from synthetic ones, otherwise saw marks appear on them, they become hard and unpleasant to the body.
- It is recommended to wash baby sets for newborns by hand with grated soap or special baby powders.
- The drum of an automatic washing machine is loaded to no more than 70% of its volume. So, the laundry stretches well and does not bunch up in a big lump.
- Color sets are wrung out at a temperature of no more than 800 rpm. Otherwise they will shed quickly.
- It is recommended to change bed linen once a week in summer, and once every 2 weeks in winter. This way you can extend its service life.
- You should not dry your clothes in a machine; it is better to dry them naturally, turning them inside out to avoid fading of the colors. Ironing should be carried out while the laundry is still slightly damp.

Instructions on how to take measurements
Choosing a family bedding set, like others, begins with determining the size. To navigate through the tables, it is important to know the parameters of the sofa or bed for which the set is purchased. You cannot buy a bed at first sight; it is important to take into account all the nuances, since comfort, convenience and quality may depend on this.
- When measuring a mattress for a sheet, you need to know not only its length and width, but also its thickness. The obtained data must be added to the thickness. This is done so that the sheet does not roll, but it can be fixed.
- When purchasing models with elastic, no additional increase is required, since it is already taken into account by the manufacturer.
- Add 5 centimeters to the size of the blanket, provided that the material is natural; if the cotton has already undergone specialized processing, add no more than 2 centimeters, since it does not shrink when washed.
- When purchasing a set of bed linen with prints, it is not recommended to add more than 1-2 centimeters, as the pattern may change and ruin the look. The image must be in the intended location.
- Standard pillowcases, either 50x50 or 70x70. Foreign manufacturers often sew rectangular models, so be careful when purchasing.
All dimensions must fit the bed exactly, so check all specifications carefully.
Which material is better to choose
Manufacturers sew bed linen from natural, synthetic and semi-synthetic fabrics.
The most comfortable option is natural materials: linen and cotton. Cotton fibers are intertwined in different ways, so new types of fabrics appear - ranfors, percale, satin, calico and poplin. This fabric “breathes”, absorbs moisture well, retains its appearance for a long time and withstands frequent washing. Sometimes natural fibers are mixed with synthetic ones to increase the strength of linen and reduce its price. The more natural the bed linen fabric, the more pleasant it is to sleep on it.
Linens made from bamboo and eucalyptus fiber are an excellent option for allergy sufferers: they do not irritate the skin, do not cause allergic reactions and have bactericidal properties.
Synthetic bed linen is characterized by increased wear resistance and elasticity. The most popular synthetic material is rayon. However, synthetics do not allow air to pass through and disrupt body heat exchange during sleep and do not remove moisture well. Therefore, it is better to choose underwear with a low content of artificial fibers or give preference to natural fabrics.
