A kitchen towel is an essential attribute and assistant of the housewife. Neither a small kitchen in a modest high-rise building, nor a spacious dining room in a country villa can do without it. Wide application, different styles of premises, different tastes of owners, designers and manufacturers have contributed to the creation of many options for these products in different sizes, shapes, colors and textures.
The most popular products are the most practical, optimally sized, with a decent aesthetic appearance and an affordable price. This article will talk about the sizes of kitchen towels.
What sizes of kitchen towels are there? Standards
While towels used for wiping the face, hands, feet and body have generally accepted sizes, which may vary slightly in individual countries, kitchen towels do not have such standards.
Since the main purpose of such products is to wipe hands, dishes, cutlery and furniture surfaces in the kitchen or dining room, their sizes are dictated by the convenience of performing these operations .
Products of this size are easy to use and wash, mobile, and allow you to successfully cope with the tasks for which they are intended. The most common ratios are the length and width of the towel (in centimeters), which we will discuss below. Waffle . The raw materials for their production are flax or cotton. They are usually produced in a rectangular shape in the following sizes:
- 30x50;
- 35x50;
- 35x75;
- 38x63;
- 45x55;
- 45x75;
- 37x70 and others.
Terry . Made from pure cotton, cotton with the addition of synthetic thread, and bamboo fiber. Terry products for use in the kitchen are produced in the shape of a rectangle or square and are often called napkins, which further emphasizes their purpose for wiping hands or dishes and absorbing moisture. Most often, such napkins are produced in the following sizes:
- 25x25;
- 35x35;
- 25x50;
- 30x50;
- 35x70;
- 50x70 and others.
Linen . This type of kitchen towel will last longer than others. Linen fabric has excellent characteristics during operation, washes well, absorbs moisture, and does not leave fibers on wiped surfaces. Such products usually do not have bright colors, they have more muted tones and a calm pattern. At the same time, the quality of the thread allows us to produce fabrics with excellent texture, which gives them an elegant look and strict style.
Household towels
They are distinguished by lower density, greater brightness, and the presence of variegated patterns and patterns along the border. Typically, these towels have a single thread loop.
Borders are made in several types: plain-dyed, patterned, multi-colored, with a Greek border or logo. Their width can vary and comes in several sizes - up to a maximum of 8-9 cm.
Smooth towels (or plain towels, as they are also called) are intended for use in beauty salons, sports clubs, beauty salons, fitness clubs, etc.
Black terry towels are especially popular. They are used in beauty salons and cosmetic centers because they are not prone to contamination and traces of paint are not visible on them.
Which decor is better?
The choice of decor is a matter of taste of the housewife. It should fit harmoniously into the decor of the room, match the style and color of the utensils used.
For a country-style kitchen, square or rectangular terry napkins with floral motifs in not very bright lilac, green and yellow tones are suitable.
If the room and furnishings are made in the Art Nouveau style, rectangular towels measuring 50x70 or 45x65 made of cotton, painted in red, black, gray and white colors or with a geometric or abstract pattern, will look great.
From the curtain
If the cat has torn the curtain with its claws, cut off the lace details, sew on a loop - and another useful item is ready. Or you ironed a curtain and set it on fire with an iron - cut out the damaged part, cut it, and hem it. You will get stylish kitchen accessories.
For comparison, at IKEA such things cost 100-200 rubles apiece. Microfiber products are even more expensive.
Tips for needlewomen when sewing their own towels
Armed with a piece of suitable fabric, some thread and some inspiration, you can add a touch of personality to your dining room or kitchen. When sewing yourself, the size of the product is often dictated by the width of the purchased fabric and will be individual .
Practical sizes: 40x70 or 50x70 (with fabric width 140). It is necessary to take into account that on each side one centimeter will be spent on the seam. The edge can be decorated with braid or other fabric; in this case, the main fabric is not used for edging. The edging made with contrasting color braid or fabric looks good.
Embroidery looks great on a light, plain napkin. The shape can be arbitrary: rectangular, square, round, oval. If you sew a ring in the middle of a round napkin, it will be convenient to hang the napkin on a hook.

How to sew a beautiful kitchen towel with your own hands as a gift for beginners: ideas, photos
In fact, sewing a towel is not such a difficult job. For the process you will need everything: imagination, material, threads, scissors, machine, needle. If you want it to look different than usual, then you can embroider a real work of art using different colored threads on a regular waffle base or linen fabric.
Even such scraps of colored material, as in the image below in the form of an applique and lush frills at the bottom of the towel, will decorate your kitchen with a festive atmosphere for the New Year.
DIY towel
In almost any home in the closet you can find an old dress made of cotton fabric, which a fashionista will no longer wear, and maybe also pieces of braid and lace. This material will make a towel, and more than one, which can be sewn in the form of a fluffy sundress, as in the photo below.
Kitchen towels made of colored fabric
Instructions for sewing a regular kitchen towel:
- Take the material. Cut out a regular rectangle measuring 62 by 32, leaving two centimeters for hems.
- To get a perfect edge, iron the edges of the product (5 mm twice on each side).
- Secure the folds with needles and stitch the edges using a sewing machine.
- If you don’t want to waste time on hems, then sew the edges with a zigzag.

Materials
Today, towels are made from a variety of fabrics, both natural and synthetic. The main ones:
Cotton towels may contain synthetic threads, such as modal. It makes towels softer and remains durable. It is important to remember that other synthetic materials impair the absorbency of towels, and the skin remains damp after drying. Also in the composition of the towel you can find lyocell material, which is obtained from eucalyptus. It provides the towel with better absorption, softness and smoothness. Lyocell does not accumulate dust and is suitable for allergy sufferers, however, such towels wear out a little faster than usual.
