Thanks to modern design solutions, bedroom furniture floating as if in air space gives the room a feeling of lightness and airiness. A weightless floating bed, as it is also called “levitating”, is a bed in which the supports are hidden, thanks to which such an effect is created. The support itself is much smaller than the bed, so you can only see it by looking under the bed. The design fits organically into various interior styles - modern, minimalism, country. A unique visual effect can be achieved using lighting, which will transform the interior beyond recognition.
What are the pros and cons of the models
Although outwardly quite unusual furniture, a bed with a “floating” effect has its own nuances. Only after studying the pros and cons, you can decide whether to choose such a sleeping place or not.
The advantages of such a model are as follows:
- strength, durability - despite the external fragile effect, the bed can support at least two people;
- unpleasant creaking and loosening of the frame, which is typical for many beds, are eliminated;
- convenient cleaning of the space under the bed due to the absence of niches and legs;
- the ability to choose the shape and width yourself, depending on the available space of the room;
- a floating bed with lighting will attract the attention of both adults and children.
The products also have disadvantages:
- the structure is attached to the wall, which prevents its further rearrangement. Each movement will be accompanied by the dismantling of at least the bed fasteners;
- Furniture should be installed near sockets so that the wire length is minimal;
- the design of the bed with the “floating” effect is large;
- installation is complicated, so it will require the help of specialists or good skills;
- ready-made floating bedroom furniture requires significant costs, and if made independently, you will need experience in working with wood and metal.

Design overview
Floating beds are gaining popularity, and modern manufacturers offer many options. This sleeping place is multifunctional and comes in several types:
- with one hidden support in the middle - the bed is mounted to the wall. The legs are made of plastic, metal, sometimes not one, but several legs are used. They are hidden; you have to bend over to see them;
- a floating bed with ropes that are attached to the ceiling makes it very easy to swing. This bed has a mattress with springs and a box frame, so it requires support;
- floating bed on magnets. A significant disadvantage is the magnetic field. Therefore, this bed is not suitable for people with pacemakers.
Do-it-yourself beds are most often made with a wooden base, the dimensions of which are much smaller than the sleeping place, so it is hidden from view, but this does not affect the strength.

Types of models
A floating bed is one that visually “hangs” freely above the floor. There are several types of models that can be divided by type of design, materials used, size and shape. These can be single beds, double beds or furniture for a teenager's room.
Unusual design shape with visible support only at the headboard
The impression of “flight” can be created due to the design features of the models. The basis of the structure is most often natural wood. Bedside tables will help complement the bed and make the design more complete.

The legs are not visible, but they are there
Most often, a floating sleeper has no visible support on the floor. There are no bed legs, in the usual sense.
Stability is created by attaching to the wall and resting on one (or more) legs in the middle. Metal, transparent plastic or other material can be used for this purpose. You can only see the entire structure of the fastenings by bending down.
The shape of beds with wall mounting and legs should be rectangular. This will ensure that the headboard is securely fixed.
A support made of transparent plastic can stand on the carpet and be completely invisible from the outside.
Frame: how to make it invisible
A bed that stands on a frame can be solid and very reliable. To ensure that the base remains invisible, it is made of a much smaller area than the bed itself. From the outside, such a design will also “float”.
When organizing a frame under the entire bed, there may be no attachment of the headboard to the wall. This allows you to make a sleeping place of any shape - oval, rectangular, round, etc.
The round bed can be mounted anywhere in the room
Why are ropes needed?
Another option for organizing levitation is to attach the bed to the ceiling using ropes. This method is difficult to implement and requires serious calculations taking into account the load. As a result, the bed will literally float above the floor surface.
The shape of a bed on ropes is often chosen to be rectangular. This allows you to organize fasteners in the corners.

Magnets: not an option for everyone
The most unusual version of a fluttering bed is a bed that has no legs, no ropes, or other fastenings to the surfaces of the floor, ceiling and walls. This effect is achieved using powerful magnets.
This design has a couple of very big disadvantages - a strong magnetic field and a very high cost. It is not advisable to use such a bed all the time. But for people with a pacemaker, this version of the model is generally not acceptable.
Fastenings are necessary to hold the berth
Materials for creation
The quality of the bed is determined by the wood that is used in its manufacture:
- pine – good at work, easy to process. It is used for arranging elements such as frames, legs, and flooring for a mattress;
- spruce is the least durable and sometimes cracks. Used for elements that do not require heavy loads;
- oak is a durable material, suitable for creating decorative elements;
- beech – after processing it is the most flexible in work. Used in decorative elements;
- Larch is a strong and durable material, almost not susceptible to rotting. Supports and frames of bedroom furniture are made from it;
- mahogany is the most expensive and is used for decorative purposes.
To save budget, chipboard can be used for external parts of the bed. When making the frame of a floating place, wood can be replaced with strong, lightweight, steel pipes with a square cross-section. Since bedroom furniture is subject to heavy loads, preference should be given to pipes with thicker metal.
How the floating effect is created
A bed with a flying effect is intriguing, creates a special mood in the bedroom, it will fit into any interior, giving the room a modern, sophisticated look. At the same time, such a model can be made with your own hands. If you have to work with wood, you will need the following tool:
- jigsaw with a set of blades for woodworking;
- screwdriver with a set of bits;
- screwdriver;
- rubber mallet;
- emery cloth;
- paint brush;
- glue, varnish, paint;
- tape measure, square, marker, level;
- awl, hand saw.
Also, corners and screws are used for the frame.
To work with a metal frame you will need:
- saw – grinder with a set of blades;
- drill, drills, welding machine;
- clamps, clips;
- ruler, angle, level;
- pencil.
The support located in the center of the bed has 6 supports and is connected to hinges. The supports are pulled together with a cable, creating tension with turnbuckles. This action allows you to control the horizontal position of the bed when the floor surface is not very flat. However, if the surface is level, it is enough to secure the supports with bolts.
Bed parts can be made from eight dry boards. It is enough to have drawings and cut the boards according to them. Next, the supports are cut out, and all irregularities are removed using a grinding machine. To prevent the bed from squeaking, glue and furniture dowel are usually used. After all the parts are ready, they are coated with varnish or paint.
Sections of stainless steel pipes with a diameter of 34 mm can be used as hinges for the supports. Once this is complete, the bed pieces are assembled into one piece. Having established the level, you need to clearly adjust the furniture for the correct horizontal position. This is quite difficult and will require concentration. The level is also checked in relation to the supports. After adjusting the support, you can begin installing the bed frame, backrest and slats.
The uniqueness of the bed also lies in the light effect, which can be enhanced through the automatic process of switching on and off, for which it is necessary to improve the LEDs with a day-night sensor. With this solution, you can ensure that the backlight is turned on only at night. The strain gauge sensor is no less attractive. By installing it, the backlight will turn off as soon as a person appears on the bed, and will turn on during absence. For the head of the bed you will need filler and upholstery. For filling, foam rubber and its substitutes are usually used, and for upholstery, fabric, leather, suede, and their analogues are suitable.
The design of a flying bed can be with or without a niche. At the intended location of the box, a rectangular hole is cut out, using hinges, a lid is installed. After that, a board is made so that the mattress is fixed. A board is attached to the base so that the edge is 20 - 30 millimeters higher than the plywood. At this stage of assembly, the wooden parts are coated with varnish and, if desired, paint. When completely dry, the two parts of the bed can be joined together. If there is no need for a linen box, then assembling the bed is greatly simplified. In this case, the sleeping place is made according to a simpler principle, with support in the form of legs.
For convenient access to the niche, you can use a system with a lifting mechanism. It is quite difficult to do such work on your own; it is easier to purchase a ready-made bed with a lift. The mechanism should be used with minimal shock absorbers, which will serve as support for the berth at the top point. This convenient approach allows you to free your hands and does not require outside help.
If desired, the floating bed can be equipped with LED lighting - single-color or flashing. First of all, a metal frame is attached to which the LED strip is glued. This step-by-step action allows the tape to hold tighter, and the metal acts as a heat dissipator. It is more practical to use a full-color RGB tape and attach it from top to bottom. The result is bedroom furniture floating in the air, held above the floor by rays of rich color.
When making a bed yourself, you can make your work easier and hand over part of the work to a workshop. Specialists who work with metal profiles and wood coverings will manufacture a support or frame according to the drawings provided to them.
