Cabinet and tabletop size
It is logical that the sink bowl can be as much smaller than the cabinet as desired, but not larger, so to determine the size of the kitchen sink, first take 2 measurements:
- width of the cabinet frame;
- If you want to buy a sink with a wing, then also measure the length and width of the piece of countertop that the future sink may occupy. At the same time, keep in mind that if you are right-handed, then the wing should be on the right; if you are left-handed, then it is better to choose a sink wing with a left orientation. An example in the photo below.
And now the main recommendations:
- On the sides, the sides should not lie close to the wall, it is better to maintain a distance of about 5 cm, that is, if the cabinet frames are 50 cm wide, then you can install a sink with a bowl width (or diameter) (excluding the wing) of no more than 45 cm;
- The sink should also not be adjacent to the front edge of the countertop by more than 5 cm, otherwise it will be inconvenient - clothes may get wet and water may splash. But you shouldn’t place it too far from yourself either;
- The kitchen sink can be installed close to the back wall, that is, to the apron, but it is better not to do this. If you leave a distance of 5 cm or more, it will be easier to wipe this area so that water does not accumulate. And if you leave this distance large, then you can put dishwashing detergents there or mount a faucet as in the photo below. This is especially true for sinks without a hole for installing a faucet;
- If you want to choose an overhead sink, then you need to find the dimensions exactly in accordance with the dimensions of the cabinet.
Some general recommendations for choosing
Before purchasing a sink, we recommend that you pay attention to the following nuances:
- material thickness – this parameter is especially relevant for stainless steel products; in the most durable models this parameter reaches 1.2 mm, they are also the most silent during use;
- type of mixer - if it is built into the countertop, then you need to provide a place in the sink for it; Options equipped with a retractable shower are very convenient for two- and three-section models;
- The dimensions of the overhead sink must exactly match the size of the cabinet.
The above recommendations will help you decide on the most suitable sink size, which will guarantee its subsequent long-term and comfortable use.
Sink bowl size
This characteristic is always less than the size of the total working surface. In the case of the oval sink example above, the bowl size is expressed as a diameter of 400 mm. If the bowl were square or rectangular, we would have two dimensions, indicated as length and width, or as width and depth. In the picture below, the bowl size is 350 x 390 mm.
Sinks can consist of 2 or 3 bowls, equal in volume or different from each other. In the second case, the technical characteristics will include such a value as the size of the main bowl, that is, the larger bowl.
The sink bowl has another important parameter – the depth of the bowl. The depth determines how much and what kind of dishes you can put in your sink. With a deep sink, you can safely install a high faucet and not be afraid that the stream of water will splash the surrounding surfaces.
If we return to the drawing of the oval sink, its depth is 205 mm. Find this size at the bottom left of the picture. The standard bowl depth dimensions are 16-20 cm, but there are sinks with a depth of 13-15 cm and 21-25 cm.

Cabinet or cabinet dimensions
To install a sink in the kitchen, you will need a floor cabinet or cabinet where all the wires, pipes, siphons, filters, food waste grinders are placed, and also supplemented with shelves or storage containers.
The cabinet or sink cabinet is made in the same design and has the same height as other furniture. They are often made more durable, since a sink made of stone or ceramics has significant weight.
The most important indicator when choosing a cabinet or cabinet is the distance between its side walls. On top between them there is a bowl or several bowls. Below, inside the cabinet, there are all sewer and water supply equipment.
- For an overhead model, the distance between the side walls of the cabinet should match the width of the sink itself.
- For mortise ones, this size is usually indicated in the installation diagram. There are several standard cabinet widths - 45, 60, 70 and 90 cm.
The standard depth of a kitchen cabinet, like other kitchen furniture, is about 60 cm. Most models are produced taking these values into account.
The standard height of kitchen furniture is 82-85 cm, but people who are taller or shorter than average are often forced to order sink cabinets made to measure.
Kinds
A sink is an essential attribute of any kitchen. Every housewife strives to keep her “kingdom” clean and tidy, understanding that a properly selected kitchen cabinet under the sink will give the room an aesthetic appearance, and the functionality of the item will allow you to get rid of excess clutter. Therefore, you should also take care of the rational internal filling of the cabinet:
- using shelves you can easily divide the space;
- To preserve various kitchen items, pull-out containers, nets, and baskets are used;
- U-shaped drawers allow you to organize the space under the sink as compactly as possible; located on top, they do not interfere with other structural elements at all;
- an empty box of larger dimensions can be adapted for built-in kitchen appliances.
The sink and cabinet for it can be of any shape, design, size. The question of choosing a suitable model is always relevant. Buyers are interested in how to assemble a cabinet, where to install it so as not to clutter up the space, what type of bedside table will fit most organically into the kitchen interior. The furniture market amazes with the variety of sink models and cabinet designs. There are two types: straight and corner cabinets for kitchen sinks. They differ according to several criteria:
- appearance;
- practicality;
- operational convenience;
- reliability.
Straight
The most traditional, classic piece of floor-standing kitchen furniture is the straight cabinet. With a standard set of equipment, they differ in shape, size, external decoration and internal filling. It is equipped (depending on the parameters of the cabinet itself) with one door for a width of up to 50 cm, or two if its size is from 60 cm to 80 cm. Typically, such a cabinet has internal shelves, built-ins for attaching a trash can or container. If the size of the space under the sink allows, the cabinet is equipped with easy-to-use “carousel” shelves or rails.
This piece of furniture is most often used in kitchens. A straight cabinet is practical, convenient, easy to assemble, easy to use, increases usable space in the kitchen and allows you to store various kitchen utensils.
However, the closet should not be too deep, since access to storage items becomes more difficult; in this case, the optimal solution would be to have drawers.
Angular
For a small kitchen unit in a small kitchen, the most convenient sink is located in the very center of the corner area. This location makes it possible to save space in the room, plus additional convenience for the housewife is created by the close proximity of all the necessary kitchen utensils, in other words, “at arm’s length.” Unlike a straight cabinet, a corner cabinet is more ergonomic. To place the necessary household items, two types of cabinets are used:
- rectangular - a single-door design, the second part of which remains tightly closed, the surface of the tabletop follows the shape of a right angle. Such a cabinet is simple to manufacture, but not functional enough to use, since access to storage items is difficult, and the internal space for all kinds of additional elements is not large enough;
- Corner cabinets win the battle for functionality - the most popular is L-shaped, in which, when the door is opened, the entire interior space is clearly visible;
- trapezoidal cabinet - a large square cabinet with cut corners and a large internal volume allows you not only to place in it many things you need in the kitchen, but also, if desired, to install household appliances.
A trapezoidal cabinet takes up a large area, but it is worth making a choice in its favor. Such an item is more expedient to use, will help to properly organize a corner area in the kitchen, advantageously increases the usable volume of the cabinet, is much more practical to use, and is ideal for small apartments. In addition, a corner kitchen sink cabinet can accommodate many more items than a straight cabinet.
Hole dimensions
Installation dimensions or installation opening refers to the size of the hole in the countertop into which the mortise sink is to be installed. The installation dimensions are larger than the dimensions of the bowl, but smaller than the dimensions of the sink itself. They are indicated in the installation instructions.
Some models, such as the Blanco Tipo 8 Compact, come with a template for insertion. They can be installed in the cutout from above or below. In the first case, a hole is cut for the entire sink, including the wing, if any. In the second, a hole is cut in the shape of a bowl or several bowls.
For this model, the hole size is 76.2x48.2 cm.
As a rule, countertops and sinks with bottom placement are made of artificial or natural stone, since the open side of the countertop is constantly exposed to water.
Manufacturers of household appliances offer customers a huge number of models in all price categories. Famous Italian and German brands Blanco, Franke, Fulgor Milano, Kuppersbusch, Restart, Smeg are widely represented in the Hausdorf store. With us you can choose a sink of any type and size from any materials. All products come with a warranty, and we deliver and install most models free of charge.
Dependence of sink size on its shape
The size of the sinks depends little on the type of material. If you compare the characteristics of sinks made of steel, artificial stone or ceramics, they will be approximately the same values. The dimensions of sinks are directly related to their shape.
It is logical to assume that the main size of a round sink and its bowl will be expressed as a diameter. The most convenient of them include sizes ranging from 450-500 mm in diameter. There are also more compact sizes with a bowl diameter of 300 mm.
Oval sinks are most often called sinks with a round bowl and a wing placed to the right or left of it, forming an oval configuration. Therefore, in addition to linear dimensions (length and width), the diameter of the bowl is also indicated. Standard lengths range from 560 to 780 mm, widths from 440 to 510 mm.
The classics of the genre for sinks are square and rectangular sinks. The most familiar and frequently used sinks in apartments in our country. The side size of standard square sinks is in the range of 400-500 mm. Among the variety of rectangular sinks, it is difficult to name any standards. Basically, these are models with parameters close to the size of 500 x 600 mm.
For corner sinks, triangular and trapezoidal sinks, the dimensions are very individual. What they have in common is the width of the cabinet, which is close to 900 mm.
Sizes and shapes
The convenience of its operation and how harmoniously it will look in the interior largely depend on the shape of the sink. Products can be of several types:
- square - roomy and stylish, the most popular sizes are 50 x 50 and 60 x 60 cm;
- rectangular is the best choice for a narrow countertop, but you need to understand that the narrower the sink, the more splashes it will cause during use;
- round - very convenient and easy-to-clean models; they can hold more dishes than the previous type, but are rarely equipped with additional bowls;
- corner - very compact, but need to be equipped with a high-quality mixer that can be rotated in different directions for a long time;
- trapezoidal - ideal for cabinets of the same shape.
There are also less common, but very interesting shapes of sinks: fancy, oval, polygonal. The choice depends on your taste, the style of the room and its size.
Setting up a bedside table
Any type of base under the sink allows you to save space in the kitchen . At the same time, it is important to observe the principle of ergonomics and organization of space inside such a structure.
A convenient and modern place for storing small and large items is the pull-out compartments under the cabinet. The main positive point is the use of movable elements - there is no need to climb into the box headlong in search of any thing. The main thing when placing them is to focus on the location of construction and communication systems.
To save more space inside the product, use these tricks::
- attach open shelves under the sink, making it easy to place elegant decorative plates and other design attributes;
- use blank facades, since thanks to solid structures there is no visual clutter; another important plus is resistance to damage and easy to clean.
Despite all the ergonomic capabilities of corner and straight cabinets, there is one way to organize your storage space even more optimally - to make a custom cabinet according to your own drawing . In this case, all the wishes and features of your kitchen will be taken into account.
Another modern solution would be the use of a combined cabinet, where open and closed drawers , a folding container, and all kinds of storage sections are harmoniously located. These devices will help disguise various objects located inside the kitchen cabinet.
Additional Tips
When choosing, pay attention to other criteria:
- The choice of sink size is determined, first of all, by the purpose of its use. Even in a large kitchen you can install a compact sink if the family consists of 1-3 people.
- If you have a dishwasher, then a large sink is not needed.
- If the sink is made of stainless steel, you need to pay attention to the thickness of the metal. The thicker the metal, the stronger the sink, the less noisy it is and the more securely the faucet will be installed. The thickness of the metal varies from 0.4 to 1.4 mm. Optimal – 1.2 mm.
- Sound insulation must be installed at the bottom of a stainless steel product, since the metal makes noise under the influence of a stream of water from the tap. You can apply sound insulation yourself.
- If the mixer will be mounted on the sink itself, you need to choose a bowl with a hole. If it will be installed on a desktop, then you need to leave room for it.
Inexpensive stainless steel sinks are the most resistant to mechanical damage, easy to clean, but less aesthetically pleasing. They do not chip, but may lose their shine if you clean them with aggressive chemicals.
Artificial stone sinks look expensive, but are easily scratched and quickly lose their presentable appearance if not properly cared for. They cannot be cleaned with abrasive products or tools. Poor quality material may crack. Also, composite sinks crack due to sudden temperature changes.
Natural stone sinks are easier to care for, but they are fragile materials. In addition, it is difficult to install it yourself.
Number of people in the family
For a small family that rarely receives guests, a model with a diameter of up to 45 cm is quite acceptable. Installing a large kitchen sink is usually impractical even in cases where the owners are rarely at home, prefer to eat in cafes and restaurants, or have a dishwasher. They can easily get by with a compact product that can fit one pot, frying pan and a couple of plates. A large family requires a more serious approach to housekeeping. It will be much more convenient to wash a mountain of dirty dishes in a deep and spacious sink. Homemade pies and cookie lovers should also consider this choice, as casserole dishes and baking sheets take up quite a lot of space and can be difficult to clean in small bowls.
DIY installation
If you purchased a stainless steel or faux granite sink, you can install it yourself.
To do this you will need:
- jigsaw;
- ruler;
- pencil;
- screwdriver.
- First, remove the tabletop and place it with the inside facing up.
- We attach to it a sink or cardboard of the appropriate size, which usually comes with the sink. We outline it with a pencil.
- We make an allowance of 1.5-2 cm in the direction of reducing the hole, so that there is something to support the sink.
- Cut a hole using a jigsaw. It is better to drill holes on the rounded edges and then connect them with a cut. This will make the work easier and the cut will be much smoother.
- We sweep the cut from sawdust and treat it with silicone sealant. We also apply this composition to the edge of the sink.
- We glue the sink well to the countertop and secure it from the wrong side with special fasteners.
- We install the countertop on the kitchen unit.
- We connect the siphon and mixer.
Ergonomic expediency
It has been proven that correctly calculated all dimensions, including the height of the countertop in the kitchen from the floor and the optimal location of all elements of the kitchen set, can reduce the housewife’s physical costs by 30%.
It has been found that if you do the same work in the kitchen while standing upright, you use half as many muscles as if you do the same work while leaning slightly forward towards a lower countertop.
If the height of the countertop from the floor in the kitchen is slightly higher, then the number of muscles of the person working behind it still remains the same, but the amount of load on them increases. This leads to the fact that they will get tired faster.
Therefore, choosing the height of the countertop is an important matter, especially if the owner of the kitchen will need to do a fairly large amount of work in the kitchen.
Examples of location and design: photo design and video of sink installation
The size of the sink depends on various factors: shape, type, number of bowls, etc. When choosing, you need to pay attention to all aspects. The main thing is to choose one that is convenient for use. There are no objective assessments here, since comfort is understood differently for everyone.
