Types of curtains

Curtains in a modern interior can be of a wide variety of styles. According to the opening method, they are divided into two types:

  1. curtains move to the sides (classic opening)
  2. rise up (all types of Roman, roller, Austrian blinds)

Today I, together with Emma and her assistant Mr. Roulette, will talk about curtains that slide apart and hang on classic wall curtain rods. Statistics from professional experience show that we love classic curtains more than all others.

Areas of application depending on style

  • classic room - movable or lifting;
  • high-tech - blinds or Japanese curtains;
  • voluminous rooms - curtains in vintage style, French Provence;
  • made in ethnic style - matching curtains.

Fabric with a pattern - pitfalls when choosing and purchasing.

The task becomes more complicated if you choose fabric with a pattern.
Each drawing has its own report. A report is a repetition of a pattern on fabric vertically and horizontally.

To make the curtains look seamless and beautiful, you need to combine the pattern. This procedure requires buying more fabric so that the master can make the joining perfectly. For fabrics with a pattern, on average 2 or 3 reports are added to the total consumption, and for some prints this can be a whole meter.

Advice: check with the seller for the drawing report. Come to the fabric salon with all the window measurements so that the master can make a professional calculation: how much fabric to buy.

Loops and ties

These types of fastenings are usually made of textiles. A loop is a strip of fabric not exceeding 20 cm, the ends of which are sewn directly onto the top edge of the curtain.

The loop thus formed is strung onto the cornice. If both edges of the loop are stitched, then in order to hang the curtain you can remove the cornice. There is an option when one end of the loop is sewn to the curtain, and the other is secured with a button, snap or Velcro, which makes hanging the curtain easier.

With this method, moving the curtain along the cornice is somewhat difficult, because the fabric of the loops does not slide as much as, for example, metal rings. But with some skill, any housewife will quickly learn how to move the curtain easily and simply, forming beautiful, even folds on the fabric.

Ties are a method of fastening that resembles loops. Externally they look like a bow or a knot.

  • Curtains can contrast in color with the main background, serving as a decorative detail, but are often made of the same textile as the curtain itself and are simply sewn to the main fabric.
  • There is also an option when a strip of fabric (tie) is made separately and simply inserted into the hole at the top of the curtain.

Hanging curtains with ties requires a lot of time and patience; the fabric is not easy to evenly distribute along the cornice, but this option looks elegant, adding a feeling of joy and celebration.

Formula for calculating fabric without a pattern for curtains using Emma's window as an example:

At the end of our conversation about dream curtains, I want to express one thought.

You don’t have to hang curtains, you can replace them with wooden blinds, or with a roller blackout mounted on the window frame. You can completely abandon any method of closing yourself off from the light. But always remember about the climate in which you live, about banal coziness and comfort.

And remember that if you refused to decorate the windows with curtains, then their design should be made perfect during the renovation. No chips, uneven corners, sloppy joints of wallpaper and paint. Pay special attention to window sills and slopes. And then everything in your house will be 5 plus, not for the picture, but for your cool life.

I thank decorator Lira Shamsutdinova for her help in preparing the material and the interesting conversation about curtains.

Eyelets and rings

Grommets - wide rings made of metal or plastic, which are sewn onto the top of the curtain - have become widespread as fastenings.

This option is ideal for a classic style with a heavy curtain composition, fits perfectly into retro, loft and grunge styles, and is also suitable for minimalism.

  • The curtain with eyelets facilitates the process of curtaining; the rings slide without difficulty, forming symmetrical folds. This method works well even for the heaviest curtains.
  • It should be noted that the eyelets made of metal can scratch the curtain rod when moving the curtains, so in order to hang the curtains it is better to remove the rod itself.
  • The rings are no different in appearance from eyelets, but they are not sewn into the fabric, but are strung on the cornice itself. Attaching the curtain to the rings is quite easy, there are a variety of methods.

The curtain composition on rings is reliable and forms beautiful, even folds in appearance. This design is durable and can also withstand fairly dense and heavy fabrics.

Moving the curtain attached to the rings is easy, but is accompanied by a little noise. As a method of fastening, we can call clothespin rings, the fabric to which is attached without additional effort.

Recommendations for choosing fasteners

Different types of curtains correspond to a certain type of fastening. For example, it is illogical to hang products with hooks using crabs, and roller blinds cannot be hung on hooks. But there are general tips on how to choose a mount:

  • It is recommended to think through the method of hanging curtains at the renovation stage.
  • The method of placing curtains should correspond to the interior of the room - on a cornice, strong rope, ceiling, Velcro, etc.
  • If it is a cornice, then you need to match it to the tone of the furniture or flooring. Usually rings, loops, drawstrings, clips or eyelets are attached to it. For low ceilings, it is better to mount the cornice directly to the ceiling and choose hooks on rollers as fasteners. Installing a ceiling structure will visually make the room taller.
  • It is better not to hang heavy and large curtains on plastic fastening accessories, but to give preference to reliable metal ones.
  • It is advisable to decorate a narrow window opening with curtains on a long round cornice.

Barbell

A classic version, made from a variety of materials: plastic, wood, metal. Curtains are attached to it using rings, eyelets, hooks, clips, and loops made of similar fabric.

Tiebacks will look good. But there is no need to cover the bar with drapery and lambrequins, since unnecessary accessories will only make the structure bulkier.

Unusual placement of curtains in the kitchen

In the kitchen or dining room, you can highlight the interior with the help of original curtains. We offer several examples.

They are hung on a thin tubular cornice in the standard way. Then the curtains are simply folded in half and the lower part is also secured with cornice clothespins. To achieve a volumetric effect, the lower part of double-sided curtains is fixed in a neat bun and hung in the center of the curtain.

The muslin curtain remains popular for the kitchen. It is hung on the ceiling cornice using clothespins or miniature hooks. The curtain fibers are easily straightened and collected into several bundles using decorative elastic bands.

A long tulle for the kitchen can be hung on a flexible aluminum ceiling cornice. It is installed in the form of an arc. This approach will be effective if the window has a non-standard shape.

Interesting examples

Any interior can be turned into an object of admiration. To do this, just hang the curtains on the windows in an original and unusual way. We offer several spectacular examples.

If there is no cornice

Without curtains, you can hang curtains in the most original way:

  • Using a thick rope. To do this, you will need to install three brackets in the wall above the window. Thread a rope through them. Curtains are hung on it using grommets.
  • Beautiful tree branch. You need to find a flexible but resilient branch with a small crown. It is pre-prepared (painted, varnished). Then they are fixed to the wall like a regular cornice. For such a cornice, curtains with large rings, loops and eyelets are suitable.
  • Forged holders or metal rivets. From 5 to 8 parts are used. They are securely attached to the wall. Using them you can create an interesting pattern on the wall. If you hang curtains on such holders, you will get elegant asymmetrical waves and tucks. If you place such rivets in one line, then you can hang a lambrequin on them and form tiebacks of the same volume.
  • Point mounting. This option is ideal for semicircular window frames. Conventionally, the curtains are glued to the wall above the window in a semicircle. You get thin beautiful folds. If there are two such windows nearby, then the curtains can be fastened together using decorative tape and beautiful symmetrical tiebacks can be made.

On a note! On irregularly shaped windows, you can hang curtains in a zigzag or step pattern. This will require single rivets or holders.

On the cornice

We offer several ideas on how to beautifully hang curtains if there is a cornice.

  • Multi-layering. On a large window in a room with a modern interior, you can hang several options for curtains. Blinds are placed inside the frame, then tulle. This is complemented by night curtains and lambrequins. It turns out that three models of curtains are used for one window.
  • Multi-level hanging. For this, a special model of cornice, consisting of three strips, is useful. A single-color large curtain fabric is used. It is passed through the cornice tubes so that beautiful hooks are formed. You should get asymmetrical overhangs on opposite sides.
  • One-sided pick-up. An effective way for a small window in a dark room interior. Only half of the cornice rings are used. A night curtain is attached to them and a bun with multi-level extensions is formed. For garter, use a ribbon or braided rope with a large bell.

On a note! If the household still has tablecloths with interesting patterns, then they can be used as one-sided curtains or created from them into chic lambrequins without sewing.

Hanging tulle correctly

Tulle is used both in combination with curtains and independently. It visually enlarges the window and makes the room more spacious. It is good to use in a recreation area.

How to hang tulle without making a mistake in size? The width should be 2-3 times the width of the window. If there is a ribbon (braid) on top, then you need to pull the 2 cords hanging at the edges of the braid, gathering the tulle to the desired width. When assembled, it is permissible to exceed the window width by no more than 30 cm. The hooks are inserted at the same distance from each other into pockets along the strip.

When fastened using loops or eyelets, the folds are distributed manually, at an equal distance from each other. Hooks are inserted into loops or eyelet holes. If the tulle is hung together with the curtain, it is necessary to use a double curtain rod to be able to open and close them separately.

Window design options

  • The use of lace in an arched window opening looks unusual. It looks elegant and tasteful, non-trivial.
  • If you use light translucent curtains in a room on the north side, where the sun does not shine brightly, the material will diffuse the available light and visually distribute it. This will give the interior an atmosphere of mystery and lightness.

If you need to decorate a tall or standard window, it is customary to use floor-length curtains.

  • In a children's room, curtains and tulle with drawstrings will be very useful, as they provide great convenience. Hooks tend to break, pop out and become deformed, but here everything will remain intact for a long time.
  • Stylistically, the drawstring is suitable for kitchen curtains, especially it has country notes. With the right choice of color and material, it can be very vibrant, elegant and fresh.

When decorating small windows and windows of non-standard shape, curtains up to the window sill are often used.

In any case, this option may only fail when trying to recreate strict English classics. After all, cut and drapery are about lightness, comfort and coziness, and not impeccably clear lines.

How to install a cornice or baguette

All cornices and baguettes are screwed only with self-tapping screws. The assembly process can be divided into three parts:

  1. First, you need to use a hammer drill with a concrete drill to make the required number of holes for the dowels in order to install the mount for the rod on one side;
  2. Attach a cornice or baguette and, using a level, select the locations for future holes required for the second fastening;
  3. Drill holes for the second fastening, and then install the structure as required by the instructions.

Ideas for inspiration

It all depends on the wishes and tastes of the homeowner, examples of photographs and flights of fancy.

Classics with symmetrical curtains look beautiful, asymmetrically arranged curtains look original.

Curtains hang in a modern and unusual way that violates the traditional image, for example, asymmetrical compositions on one side. For example, a long canvas that reaches the floor, and the second layer is a curtain just above the window sill. And here you will have to imagine well how the tulle will look in such a complex design.
  • Multilayer compositions, such as curtains with light tulle or in combination with an airy veil, emphasize the chic interior of the room. Here you can play with interesting draperies and decorative elements in the form of lambrequins or elegant garters.
  • An unusual option is to place the tulle in the foreground.
  • An interesting multi-layer composition with asymmetrically sewn fabrics.
  • Fans of the classic style should adhere to symmetry in the arrangement of curtains.

Regardless of the style in which the design of the room is made, the cornice must be durable and beautiful, the fastening of the curtains must be reliable, and the curtain composition itself must delight in its appearance, creating the uniqueness of the room and testifying to the excellent taste of the owners of the house.

String

For attachment to it, clips, hooks, and holders are used. Suitable for thin, airy fabrics, tulle, veil, organza. A heavier fabric will pull the string cornice down, which will look unsightly.

Almost invisible, it focuses attention on the beauty of the fabric and the texture of the curtains themselves. Does not need to be covered with a lambrequin. Suitable for use in rooms in a minimalist, high-tech style.
