Eco-friendly living room decor idea
Dear readers of the Interiors of Rooms portal, we are happy to share our unique design work on an apartment project of 67 square meters.
The designers have worked hard and created stylish and fashionable housing that has individuality and character. Here you will find various areas for a comfortable life.
There is a place for sports, for a romantic dinner, for relaxing by the fireplace, which, by the way, burns without wood and warms the owners on cold evenings.
Original coffee table with a picture of funny poles
The owner of the apartment loves free spaces and not rooms cluttered with furniture, so the design is made in a minimalist style.
The designer made the division into zones using wood materials.
This project does not assume the presence of a TV - the owner does not watch it.
But instead there is a projector, which is easily hidden when not needed.
Wooden design of the living area
Features of wooden walls in an apartment
Firstly, wood blends harmoniously into any interior. And if it is not possible to transform the entire apartment in this style, then you can decorate at least one wall with wood.
A branch, a log house, a stump and even a whole tree...
The flight of designer imagination is limitless, especially when it comes to wood. It is used in completely different forms and even, to preserve all the beneficial properties, in a living and original form.
This solution will be ideal in a country house, where the natural wealth around the home smoothly transitions into the natural interior. Wood harmoniously combines with furniture made in white or light colors with chrome components, large stained glass windows, and glass.
The advantage of using wood in decoration
I would like to note the main advantages of wooden finishing:
- Wood retains heat well.
- This material is absolutely environmentally friendly.
- The finishing surface can be painted any color you desire.
- Availability of wood. It is sold at any hardware store.
- Life time.
This material goes well with brick, stone, concrete, leather and other materials. Also, with proper surface treatment, wood will last for many decades. The main thing is to choose a good varnish or paint and apply it strictly according to the manufacturer’s technology.
Also, this material has a very pleasant feature - the smell of wood. Agree, the aroma is pleasant.
Traditional use
Usually, the windows, doors, floors and windows in the room were exclusively made of wood. Now, due to the emergence of a large number of new construction, finishing and decorative materials, wood has lost its position a little.
The main reason for this is purely financial, however, I doubt that a person with a developed sense of taste and style would prefer metal-plastic windows to high-quality wooden ones. Moreover, if the former imitate the latter.
The same problem applies to genders. Plastic coverings are not currently considered. If the owner of a house or apartment has sufficient financial resources, then in the case of installing glass or ceramic floors (if this does not apply to the kitchen and bathroom), he will have to worry about heating these floors from below, which is an expensive thing.
Floors should be covered with carpets, exotic animal skins, mats, or some other material that protects feet from glass not heated by the sun, since the glaze of ceramic tiles is nothing more than glass.
This is where a natural wood floor demonstrates its advantage - it does not require any heating.
Wall covered with pallet boards
Without any problems, you can find a dozen pallets, disassemble all the boards, get rid of the nails, and then use them in the interior. And this is one of the most budget options in my opinion.
- For such a wooden wall you will need a plane, sandpaper, an electric jigsaw, nails or screws and a good wood finishing compound.
- I would like to note the main convenience of such an interior - all the boards from the pallets are the same size. The wall is assembled simply like a mosaic.
A little about style
Wood is an amazing natural product. For any artist-designer, be it an expert or an amateur, it opens up a horizon of limitless possibilities.
Wood forgives the grossest design mistakes and is combined with almost any materials, playing either on the similarity or on the sharp contrast of their properties.
It can be easily cut (if it is not stained oak), easily tinted and painted, modern impregnations allow it to be used even in bathrooms! It, along with stone, is the most powerful weapon in the arsenal of a modern designer. However, the same can be said about designers two thousand years ago.
Both wood and stone are very expressive materials. Therefore, when working with them, you should always use the method of alternation: light with dark, warm with cold, rough with smooth.
To highlight, or, as artists say, “pull out” this or that element, it should be placed either in a neutral (white plaster) or in a contrasting environment. For example, a meter wide woodpile looks great against a light, plain wall background.
Here, in fact, is a small number of techniques that help create a satisfactory home design.
Wall made of round saw cuts
This is another simple and interesting way to decorate a wooden wall. To solve this problem, you need to cut round planks from stumps or tree trunks.
Rounds should be attached to the wall in two ways:
- Make a wall out of plywood and nail the material to it.
- The rounds are glued to a flat wall surface using special glue.
Additional wooden decorative elements
The use of stumps as expressive plastic objects in the decoration of a home has already been mentioned.
But, as they say, not by one stump. To give the interior some zest, an aesthetic accent, you can use many other, not very large-scale, but extremely expressive means. They could be a quirky piece of driftwood on the coffee table, or an old tree root on the mantelpiece.
A whimsically curved tree branch attached to the wall can replace an entire panel. Any wooden trinket can become an artistic accent, the aesthetic nerve of the entire modern interior space. Perhaps it will be an original figurine, a vase made of birch burl, or a bast tree.
This role can be played by a set of wooden dishes, an exotic mask on the wall, candlesticks, or chess with figures made of light and dark wood. There are no barriers to flight of fancy here.
Wooden wall made of parquet or laminate
Did you know that laminate can be laid not only on the floor? It is great for wall decoration, just like parquet. And such a wall will be perfectly flat.
Of course, laminate can hardly be called wood. But his appearance says otherwise.
Light furniture
Thanks to furniture in pastel shades, even a modest-sized room is filled with light and seems more spacious. Light colors furnish classic and minimalist interiors and are a common choice for the bedroom or kitchen. Light furniture is made from the following types of wood:
- Shimo ash. There are several types of material: milk, cream, coffee. A characteristic feature is distinct tree stripes.

- Karelian birch. It has a patterned texture with a beautiful pattern reminiscent of marble. The background is white, light yellow or brownish sand. The pattern is darker - brown to black or with a reddish tint. A unique feature of Karelian birch is its moire pattern, when dark fibers are visible through light ones. The color of their birch furniture is characterized by a glowing effect, giving it a luxurious look.

- Light beech. The structure of the wood is uniform, so the color is distributed evenly. The shades are quite varied: whitish-gray or beige with a pinkish, yellowish or brownish-reddish tint.
- Pine. Material with a pronounced amber texture and brownish-brown stains. Sometimes products are deliberately given a more saturated, almost orange hue.
In addition to the main varieties, light varieties include acacia with a yellowish-gray surface, gray-pearl or matte beige milky oak, alder, apple, and pear.

Wall decoration with clapboard
It's no secret that lining is prepared boards designed specifically for interior decoration. This is why this material is considered the most common for creating a wooden wall.
Depending on the cost, the lining can be made from various types of trees. There is also eurolining, it is already fully processed and ready for installation on walls and ceilings.
Which finish to choose for a wooden style
The variations in the use of this interior decoration are endless. You can use special prepared material, unprocessed or protected. The finish can be not only light or dark brown.
The panels can cover the entire wall or one wall, and can be used as decorative inserts near window sills, a TV, or a bed.
The finish can be selected in various colors:
- Red wood. Suitable for creating a strict and rich style. Very compatible with brick or stone. If you dilute the wood with textured wallpaper, it will add coziness to the room.
- White fills the room with light and adds nobility. In this case, the emphasis can be placed on furniture.
- Gray wood is rare but adds a monochromatic touch to the design. As you know, gray color is calming, so you can safely decorate your sleeping area with gray walls made of wood.
Wood can be not only brown and beige, but also other colors.
Wall made of wooden slats
Another interesting design is the vertical installation of beams with a certain distance between them. This is a relatively modern and fashionable design. Most often used in the living room.
- In addition to finishing the wall, this technique is used in the middle of the room, creating a partition. And such a partition also allows light to pass through.
- This technique divides the space into different zones. For example, separating the living room from the kitchen.
Wood and dining areas
Kitchens and dining rooms are areas where a person enjoys food, relaxation and communication with the family. It is here, more than anywhere else, that you want to fill the interior with an atmosphere of comfort, warmth and harmony. Wood is the only material that can perfectly cope with the task. Moreover, it can be used in completely different ways.
You can combine smooth, processed logs with modern and stylish pieces of furniture, which will create a sophisticated and unique interior in your home.
Stylish details and natural wood create an unrivaled effect.
You can create a more traditional, but at the same time stylish kitchen in a rustic style, in which wood dominates in its various manifestations - from the material for wall decoration to accessories.
The natural beauty of wood plus the competent work of designers can lead to completely unexpected results that delight the eye and warm the soul.
Combination of wood with other materials
As mentioned earlier, wood goes well with other materials. For example, wood in the interior goes well with stone.
These two materials combine perfectly in the interior of any room.
- In the "Country" and "Provence" styles, a combination of stone mosaic on a wooden wall is used.
- In addition, the boards are in perfect harmony not only with bricks, but also with slabs that imitate brickwork.
A little history of the issue
From time immemorial, wood has been used by people for construction, as well as interior and exterior decoration of their homes. It is difficult to come up with a more universal material for these purposes.
Strength, ease of processing, beauty of texture, durability (especially hardwood) are the most important qualities of wood. But its even greater value is the creation of a feeling of comfort, an atmosphere of soft warmth and tenderness, and spiritual peace.
Wooden products can fit into any interior. Not a single architectural style, not a single design school is able to abandon this material.
Wooden wall in the nursery
Wood is a non-toxic and environmentally friendly material. This means it is ideal for decorating a children's room. If the surface of the wood is coated with a light varnish, then this atmosphere will give the children's room a calm and comfortable atmosphere.
And also, this material can be used to cover both a boy’s and a girl’s room.
Wood accents
Instead of cluttering the room with wood trim, you can simply add wood accents that will make the room more cozy and interesting.
Wooden windows and doors
High-quality window frames and slopes made of environmentally friendly material are a more preferable option than metal-plastic ones.
In combination with wooden doors that match the color, they will give the room solidity, expressiveness and originality.
The most suitable types of wood for door production are merbau, beech, birch, oak and cherry.
Wooden furniture
The choice of options for upholstered and cabinet furniture made of wood depends on the taste and preferences of the owners.
For example:
- High-quality tables, sofas, chairs, armchairs, cabinets, chests of drawers and beds are made from valuable species, combining wood with velor, leather and other materials.
- Objects typical of peasant huts are given a dilapidated appearance by bleaching.
- Furniture made from wood with natural cracks and knots is especially popular.
- To create designer furniture with a medieval feel, antique door locks and hinges, as well as old boards, are used.
- The furnishings in the Scandinavian style are made up of simple-shaped furniture, most often rectangular, complemented by elements made of hides, cotton, linen, ropes, wicker rope, and wood for the fireplace.
- A trend among the world's leading designers is furniture cut from solid trunks, on which knots and cracks stand out noticeably.
Wooden columns and partitions
To delimit the space in the room, decorative partitions are installed, solid or shelved, using wooden beams, edged boards and clapboard, which is used to cover the frame.
A lattice partition decorated with indoor plants is a good way to liven things up.
Wooden ceiling and walls
Wood-covered walls, floors and ceilings are appropriate in high rooms with large windows, and the amount of furniture should be minimal, for example: a soft corner, a small table and a light-colored carpet.
In rooms with high ceilings, design elements such as ceiling beams and columns are often used to create a special atmosphere.
The ceiling, decorated with wooden details imitating ceiling beams, goes well with both loft-style design and Japanese, English, Provence or country.

Living room
If there is a fireplace in the living room of your house, then wood will perfectly complement the interior, creating the interior of a cozy country house.
Wooden furniture is also perfect for this interior:
- Table,
- Chairs,
- Cabinet and similar items.
Furniture colors
The decision on choosing the color of furniture depends on many parameters: the size and purpose of the room, its design and color palette. To make an effective choice, it is useful to get an idea of the range of materials presented in furniture stores.

When assessing the options, you should also understand that cabinet and upholstered furniture made from natural solids are less varied than products made from natural or painted veneer. Color solutions for veneered MDF include dozens of shades, some of which are quite unusual.

Hallway
In Russian hallway interiors, panels, plywood, and various slats are increasingly found. In the hallway, a wooden wall can be a continuation of the closet.
Also, cabinet doors are often lined with wood.
In addition, when returning after work, the first thing you find yourself in is the hallway. Therefore, the hallway should be as comfortable as possible. A wooden wall will greatly contribute to this. And it is not necessary to cover all the walls in the hallway with wood. This material goes well with wallpaper.
As you can understand, wood can harmoniously complement the interior of any room. The main thing is to approach design wisely.
Wallpaper
Few people know, but the modern market offers nature lovers... wooden wallpaper! They can be made from:
- natural wood;
- traffic jams;
- veneer

Thanks to its aesthetic properties, wood easily fits into any room
Such wallpapers are panels consisting of small boards. All elements are easily joined together, which allows you to preserve the natural pattern. It is characteristic that wooden wallpaper does not require any special preparation of the walls: the finishing should be standard. You can assemble such a wall with your own hands, and in the shortest possible time. However, it should be remembered that such wallpapers are afraid of moisture, as well as insect pests. Therefore, finishing walls with wood will require special care.
Wooden wallpaper is a fairly new and attractive way to decorate walls in a room.

Intermediate colors
When figuring out what furniture colors there are and how they fit with a particular finish, many people pay attention to furniture in intermediate shades. It is valued for its ability to fit into interiors of different color palettes. Often it serves as a compromise for small spaces, when it is important that objects do not look bulky, and white interiors are not liked. Almost all intermediate shades are warm; items are made from the following types of wood:
- Oak. The name rustic oak is often found; means a medium brown shade, close to the color of chocolate or hazelnut shells.

- Cherry. Includes a whole range of shades from golden to reddish-red and dark red. It is valued by designers for its structure reminiscent of noble mahogany.
- Alder. The wood can have a rich honey, beige-red or reddish tint.

Apartment interior
It is a mistake to believe that wood is only suitable for decorating country houses and dachas. In the modern world, the choice is increasingly being made in favor of natural, environmentally friendly materials. And a new fashionable trend in apartment design is the use of wood in the interior.
Wood offers countless possibilities when creating furnishings and decorating your home. We are especially pleased with the large selection of species, shades, and properties.
Not only decorative items, but also furniture itself can be created from wood. It will be of the highest quality and durability. The material can also be used to cover floors, walls, and make windows.

Finishing
Wood in the interior of an apartment looks especially original if a classic style is chosen. You can use ordinary wood panels, or choose wall finishes with carvings or moldings. However, it is worth understanding that such pretentiousness on the walls will not be appropriate in any room. For example, in the bedroom it will look ridiculous; there will be a feeling that the walls are “pressing”, even if the room is large.
For living spaces (bedroom, children's room, living room), wall panels that convey the texture of the material are better suited. The rooms will become much cozier and calmer.
For the floor, you can choose parquet made of natural wood. Although it is sometimes very difficult to find it, and the prices are very high. But such flooring will please apartment owners for a long time with its high quality.

Finishing with natural materials is great for children's rooms and home decoration for people with allergies. It is noted that much less dust accumulates in such rooms. Wood is an insulating material and reduces dampness.
Many designers suggest finishing the entire space with wood: walls, floors and ceilings.
Selection of finishing materials
Before you begin to bring beauty to your apartment, you should carefully consider the choice of finishing material. First of all, the breed is determined:
- Coniferous. Suitable for rooms with high humidity (bathhouse).
- Deciduous. Ideal for ordinary residential, well-ventilated rooms.

Furniture
One of the important stages in decorating an apartment or house is the selection of furniture. Of course, everyone wants to choose high-quality, durable, stylish, environmentally friendly interior items made from wood. Wooden furniture will fit well into any style of decor. It can be Baroque, Japanese, classical, or modern.
In this case, it is not necessary to use an expensive array for manufacturing. Designers very successfully use so-called recycled materials. Sofas, coffee tables, poufs and armchairs created using pallets (in other words, pallets) look interesting.
Logs are also often used. They may well be load-bearing elements of furniture.

Adding Accents
The most miniature and insignificant at first glance objects can transform the atmosphere to the maximum. To make the room cozier, you can use small objects: coasters, photo frames, dishes, souvenirs made of natural wood. A correctly selected combination of the elements in question will quickly transform the apartment.
More daring solutions can be used. A coat hanger made from branches will look creative. In the room, the same part of the tree can become an original replacement for the cornice.
If there are a large number of tree branches, they can be used to create a magnificent space divider, reminiscent of a mini forest. It can be varied with natural stones. Such an addition to the design will favorably emphasize the taste of the owners and will serve a functional role.

It is not necessary for a decorative item to have some kind of functionality. He might just be beautiful. For example, a unique composition on the wall made of twigs. Wood is one of the best materials for creative exploration and experimentation. You can use all its parts: branches, cuts, stumps. And with each new element of decor, the interior of the apartment will change for the better.
