Luxury corduroy fabric - worthy upholstery of upholstered furniture

Corduroy is a thick fabric with a velvety texture, usually cotton, but sometimes made from rayon or other synthetic fibers. It is distinguished from velvet by the presence of scars on the fleecy covering. They provide additional abrasion resistance and an attractive appearance.

The history of corduroy began in the Middle Ages. The country of its origin is unknown for certain: there is a version that the French were the first to produce it, other fashion historians claim that this fabric comes from Manchester: the British call corduroy “Manchester”.

For a long time, this material was very expensive and was used to sew clothes for rich and noble gentlemen, but by the 19th century it became much more accessible and began to be often used for decorative purposes. Furniture upholstered in corduroy, decorative pillows, and heavy velvety curtains decorated with characteristic stripes quickly became fashionable.

Chenille for a sofa: advantages and disadvantages

High-strength fabric imitating twisted pile. Made from natural and artificial fibers. Thick chenille is available for sofa upholstery in a variety of colors. The material can be entirely synthetic or with the addition of viscose threads. The weaving of acrylic fibers provides additional strength.

  • High wear resistance.
  • Environmentally friendly due to the presence of natural fibers.
  • No pellets are formed.
  • Softness due to raised pile.
  • Keeps you warm.
  • Doesn't wear off over time.
  • Doesn't wrinkle.
  • Does not absorb odors.
  • Gives coziness to the room.
  • The material is not waterproof - difficult to remove stains form.
  • Burns out from constant sunlight.
  • The fabric is not resistant to pet claws.
  • Tights may form from metal parts of clothing.

Reference! Stains can only be removed with a special stain remover for upholstery fabrics. Aqueous solutions with detergents cannot be used.

What standards are used in production? What do they take into account?

GOST 29298-2005 “Cotton and mixed household fabrics”. Corduroy belongs to the M63 group.

It corresponds to the following parameters:

  1. The width of the two edges of the fabric should be no more than 3 cm.
  2. The whiteness of bleached fabrics is at least 82%.
  3. Deviations in surface density for finished fabrics are at least -7%.
  4. Deviations in the number of threads per 10 cm of finished fabrics are ±4%.
  5. Abrasion resistance along the plane is at least 900 cycles for pile less than 300 inclusions and 1500 cycles for pile more than 300 inclusions.

The breaking load of a strip of fabric measuring 50x200 mm is not less than:

Based on 294 kgf - 395 kgf , depending on the density of the pile;

For weft 196 kgf - 216 kgf , depending on the density of the pile.

Pros and cons of velor for a sofa

Velor fabric resembles velvet. For upholstery it is produced on an adhesive basis. The fabric contains 50% polyester, 21% organic cotton and 29% viscose. There are velor options with a cotton base and a synthetic top; this material is highly wear-resistant. With Teflon coating it becomes claw resistant. The color range is varied. The texture can be smooth or embossed.

  • softness and smoothness;
  • does not fade;
  • hypoallergenic material;
  • durability;
  • easy to clean from dirt;
  • the fabric does not stretch.
  • forms creases;
  • the material is resistant to damage only with special impregnation.
  • abrasion resistance is average;
  • does not tolerate exposure to cleaning chemicals.

Reference! Fresh stains can be easily cleaned with soapy water; traces from felt-tip pens, lipstick, and ballpoint pens can be removed with a 10 percent alcohol solution.

Production process

The material is obtained by weaving five threads on a machine. With the help of four threads, the upper and lower warps are formed, and the fifth forms the pile.

This fifth thread differs from the warp threads, usually in texture, and often in composition.

At the final stage of fabric production, the fabric is cut between two warps along the pile. Thus, two rolls of fabric come out of the machine at the same time.

In terms of composition, luxury corduroy is most often a mixed fabric. Most often it is cotton, nylon and polyester in varying proportions. The warp thread can be made of cotton and polyester, and nylon is most often added to the pile thread.

What is better for a sofa: chenille or velor

Which material is best suited for a sofa can be determined based on the intended purpose of the furniture:

  1. A living room sofa requires durable and damage-resistant upholstery. It is used intensively and may be accidentally damaged (stains, puffs, scratches). Velor is better suited; if there are animals, a Teflon-coated material is suitable. If there are no animals, small children in the house and the owners are calm, respectable people, chenille will be the ideal upholstery.
  2. Sofa for relaxation (in the bedroom or office). The furniture is not subjected to intense exposure; chenille and velor are suitable for it.
  3. Sofa for a children's room. The best choice would be velor because of its environmental friendliness and ability to quickly clean.
  4. It is better not to choose such fabrics for a kitchen sofa. The high risk of water and fat entering will quickly render these tissues unusable.

Important! Having pets immediately rules out the choice of chenille.

The choice of upholstery fabric can also be made based on its strength characteristics and the presence of special impregnation.

Strength is shown by the Martindale test, equal to the number of abrasion cycles (mechanical impact on the fabric). On average, fabric with an index of 20,000 cycles is considered durable. Fully synthetic velor has a rating of 50,000 cycles, material with the addition of natural fibers is less wear-resistant (chenille with viscose has a rating of 10,000).

For the living room, it is better to choose synthetic velor or chenille. The presence of natural fibers gives the fabric sophistication, but reduces strength. Teflon impregnation is not used for chenille. It gives special strength only to velor.

According to all the above characteristics, velor upholstery is more durable and easier to clean. Suitable for a sofa that will be used intensively. Chenille is a more delicate and presentable fabric; people leading a quiet lifestyle can choose it.

Origin story

There are two versions of the origin of corduroy:

  1. Came from France. In French, the name sounds like "corde dur roi", which was otherwise interpreted as "king's cloth". And the word “corduroy” is literally translated as “ribbed” + “coarse woolen fabric”.
  2. Originally from Manchester. In England they still call it that way - Manchester.

For many years, corduroy was the material of choice for aristocrats due to its price. The creation process itself was a secret and was passed down through families. In France, after 1799, Napoleon banned the production of corduroy. People independently solved the mystery of production, and corduroy became available to the masses. This reduced the price of the fabric. After the Middle Ages, Europeans began to decorate their homes with corduroy.

Corduroy came to Russia at the end of the 19th century as a decorative and finishing material. At the beginning of the 20th century, it began to be used in the manufacture of clothing. The peak of fashion for corduroy items came in the sixties.

It is worth considering that the corduroy of the past is very different from the fabric of the present - it has become stronger and more elastic.

Is it worth buying a velor sofa and children?

I chose the sofa model, but the velor upholstery on it looks good. Considering that the small child is 2 years old, is it worth the risk? Beauty or practicality? The fabric I chose was also dense velor, without overflow, good wear resistance. Who has had a velor sofa, write how it is maintained and how practical it is? Or all of them look like flock or micro velor, thicker.

Types of fabric

Depending on the size of the pile, the width of the scars and the thickness of the fabric, there are the following types of corduroy:

Cord

The densest, heaviest and roughest. The pile is 5 mm, the scars are wide. Used for sewing outerwear, bags, upholstery of sofas and car interiors.

Rib

Lightweight, thin. The pile is almost invisible, the scars are 2 - 3 mm. Used for suits, skirts and children's clothes.

Shaped corduroy

The scars create a decorative pattern on the surface.

Diagonal

The drawing does not go along, but diagonally.

Velveton

Dense, soft. The pile is low. Another name is monkey skin. Suitable for sportswear.

Microvelvet

Soft, especially wear-resistant. The scar is no wider than 1.5 mm. Can be confused with velor. Used on the inside of shirt collars.

Stretch

Made from synthetics. Stretches well. Suitable for tight clothing.

Lux

More wear-resistant, it contains a lot of polyester, so it is used in furniture finishing.

Sky

Appeared recently. The surface is smooth, without scars. Created with CristalCover, a water-repellent technology. Universal in use.

Satin corduroy

Light, thin, soft, expensive and rare. It feels like velvet. Typically used in tailored suits.

Gloss

The most elastic type. Reminds me of velvet. Used for dance costumes.

Good afternoon, Alena.

From experience: young children have better skin – both at home and in the car.

Within half a year, velor coverings become covered with multi-colored spots.

First you wash it, then you hammer it, since scrubbing every day with cleaning products is not an option.

In a car, leather also wins. The worst option for leather is black, beige is better.

Best regards, Stanislav, ZS_ARCH.

Good afternoon, Stanislav. Thanks for the comment, I don’t really like the skin, and it’s cold to the touch. What fabric do you recommend? Perhaps then it’s darker and has less lint?

Care instructions

Corduroy should not be wrinkled or rubbed too roughly, so it is best to wash items made from it by hand or on a delicate cycle. High temperatures are no less destructive to the pile than friction; the water temperature should not be higher than 30-35 degrees.

It is unacceptable to wring out wet corduroy, much less use a dryer for it. A freshly washed product should be hung on hangers, turned inside out, and allowed to dry naturally, then run through the pile with a soft brush.

The same brush, slightly moistened, will help restore greasy and crushed pile to its previous appearance.

It is better not to iron corduroy items. It is enough to turn the iron into steam mode and walk it along the jacket or coat hung on the hanger, without touching the pile with the sole.

If there is still a need for ironing, then this should be done from the wrong side, placing a thin fabric between the corduroy and the iron.

It is better to store them hanging rather than folded, otherwise creases may form at the folds.

Again, you often don’t immediately notice that the child has done something there. Yes, and the fabric is different.

My sister has leather sofas. She said that until the youngest is eight years old, they won’t buy velor, although they have been wanting it for a long time, since it is nicer than leather.

Alyona,

If it’s fabric, then check with the store to see if they can offer you a fabric that matches the color and that it is dirt/water/drink-repellent. )

There are such fabrics, but you need to choose it yourself, in any case. The main thing is to describe the necessary conditions to the manager.

Description and properties

It is very easy to recognize corduroy among other fabrics, because the front side has a small rib along its entire length. The width of the scar starts from 1 mm to 5 mm. The pile, like velvet fabric, can be of different lengths starting from 1 mm.

The reverse side of corduroy is smooth and matte, and has a pronounced weave pattern.

Initially, corduroy fabric was made from pure cotton fibers. But today, with the ability to change fabric compositions by adding synthetics, pure cotton corduroy is rarely found. To increase strength, save production and make the fabric softer, polyester, viscose or polyamide fibers are added to it. Purely synthetic material is also made.

The shine of the pile depends on what exactly the fabric is made of. Cotton pile looks matte, while synthetics, on the contrary, look shiny.

When producing cotton or synthetic corduroy, elastane or lycra may be added to it. This way the fabric becomes elastic, and clothes made from it are more comfortable to wear.

Corduroy - what kind of fabric and how to care for it

Due to the unique properties of corduroy, it is widely used in sewing textile products. In most cases, clothing and hats are made from this material, and less commonly, shoes and bags. Corduroy fabric is a cotton material with longitudinal ribs on the front side and thick pile. Corduroy is a type of cord, but with narrow ribs. Its texture is soft and thin, corduroy resembles velvet.

Cons of corduroy

Some housewives do not risk purchasing corduroy items because:

  • the material is difficult to care for;
  • Products made from cotton corduroy shrink after washing;
  • corduroy, made with the addition of synthetic fibers, is well electrified and also attracts dust and animal hair.

Products made from corduroy always visually look expensive and beautiful. Anyone can buy something made from this material, however, they must be prepared to provide it with proper care.

Care and operation

It is generally accepted that luxury corduroy is difficult to care for because it is a finicky material. In fact, this is not so; if you follow some rules, a product made from this fabric will last a very long time.

  • Do not expose to direct sunlight. However, this rule is also relevant for any other fabric, because textiles fade when exposed to ultraviolet rays.
  • It is not recommended to subject it to increased friction, as the fibers that form the fluffy surface may wear out, and bald spots will appear, which do not look aesthetically pleasing.
  • Cannot be bleached. Rare fabric can withstand the effects of bleach, which is present in many detergents. Substances without it do not harm the fabric, since it has a wear resistance of 25 thousand washes.
  • The washing temperature should not exceed 30 °C and preferably on a delicate cycle. It is preferable to wash small items by hand.
  • A strong spin is undesirable; it is better to let the water drain on its own.
  • It is better to soak stains on sofas or other upholstered furniture with diluted detergent using a soft sponge from edge to center. Then you need to blot with a dry cloth. Fresh dirt is easiest to remove, so if something gets on the furniture, you should immediately begin the cleaning process. Dried stains can be difficult to remove, and in some cases even impossible.

Important! Before using any detergent, even simple soap, it is best to test it on an inconspicuous area. After applying the solution, blot it with a dry cloth and let it dry. The product should only be used when it is obvious that it does not leave marks or damage the fabric.

Anna White, an interior designer, advises when using a detergent to clean large areas or the entire product at once. This way, even significant color changes will not be noticeable. This is especially true for cafes, restaurants or hotels, where velor furniture often gets dirty.

  • It is advisable to periodically vacuum luxury velor furniture with a bristle nozzle or clean it with a dry soft brush, thereby straightening out the crushed fibers.
  • It is advisable to dry textiles only in air, without the use of drying machines. Also, do not place products close to heating radiators or other heat sources. It is best to keep it 40-60 cm from heaters. It is strictly not recommended to overdry the fabric.
  • It is not recommended to iron velor, although under the influence of steam you can straighten wrinkled pile. It also helps eliminate mites in furniture.

Velveteen is good because it retains its noble shine for a long time. This makes it a favorite among designers designing hotel and luxury hotel interiors.

What to wear with corduroy items

The main frequently asked question is what to wear with corduroy items? Everything is very simple. Since corduroy fabric looks quite presentable and even rich, things that complement the image can be made of a simpler material.

For example, a corduroy skirt can be worn with a cotton or wool sweater, as well as with a fashionable knitted turtleneck. Such combinations can be with trousers and shorts.

A men's ribbed corduroy jacket will be complemented by stylish jeans and a knitted T-shirt. If you prefer a more business style, then classic trousers, a shirt and shoes will perfectly complement a corduroy jacket.

What to look for in the store

  1. Choose only reliable manufacturers, carefully study reviews before purchasing. It’s better to pay more once; the savings are rarely justified. Low-quality fabrics quickly lose their appearance. In addition, formaldehyde dyes often used in such materials can be dangerous for children and animals.
  2. If you plan to buy a set, ordering items separately is a risky endeavor. It happens that production technologies change. And if a little later you decide to add chairs in the same upholstery, the fabric may differ, resulting in a different tone.
  3. Choose products with a weight of at least 330 grams per meter. The greater the weight, the higher the density of the material, which means that it will retain its shape for a long time. This is more important than the Martindale abrasion test, which is often performed by store clerks. The fact is that it is very difficult to erase the thread, but it stretches quickly.
