- Special gaskets are formed in the surface of various mobile objects. This helps reduce vibrations during transportation;
- High-quality sound insulation is created in the ceilings between floors and partitions between rooms.
There are other situations when sealant is indispensable.
Technology for filling joints between laminate and tiles using liquid cork
To complete the work, you need to prepare a stationery knife, oil and a tube filled with the mixture. The sharp corners of the tile are ground off, and then both coatings are wiped with oil using cotton pads or swabs. The mixture in liquid form is placed in a prepared tube, and then it is gradually squeezed into the joints between the board and the tile. Liquid cork is applied with a reserve, since it shrinks, but so that the material does not fall on the surface, it is very difficult to clean it off. If the surface of both materials is located at the same level, then the joining can be done without any special complications. With different heights of surfaces, they focus on the material that is located above, and level the cork covering over it.
After the liquid cork has hardened, the excess areas must be cut off using a utility knife; this work is done carefully so as not to damage the floor surface. This is usually done after a day, and the defects are removed immediately, before the glue dries. If the floors are oiled, this is easy to do. Then grinding and scraping are done, but the last stage will not be easy to complete. Liquid stopper is not used to protect the edges of the material, otherwise it will be firmly fixed to the base and it will be impossible to detach it. The mixture cannot be applied or leveled above the required level, as it will not fit tightly and cracks may appear. In order to perform grinding and eliminate excess, the material should not gain full strength, that is, this work is performed 24 hours after application. Thanks to the application of liquid cork into the joint between the laminate and the tile, an almost flat surface is obtained, without the use of thresholds. In the kitchen, some areas are laid with tiles, for example, near the stove, sink, washing machine, since this material is easy to clean and resistant to humidity. And the laminate is laid on the remaining surface, all connecting seams between the material are filled with liquid cork.
Laminate is not so resistant to moisture that it should be installed in damp rooms; it can become deformed and lose its original appearance. For this reason, in the bathroom the surface is made more practical, that is, tiles are laid, while in other rooms you can use laminate. Since it is not advisable to lay tiles in ordinary rooms, they are a cold coating. Installation features
There are strict requirements for the transition between laminate and tile. Strict adherence to installation technology and careful execution will help achieve a positive result. The main requirement for joining surfaces is the absence of flaws on the edges of the tiles and laminate.
In addition to tiles, laminate and expansion joint, you need to purchase wood glue and sealant, which will be needed to hide minor bending defects at the joint. The color of the veneered end of the compensator is selected in accordance with the overall color scheme of the floor covering.
Installation of a solid cork expansion joint is carried out when one type of coating has already been laid. First of all, you need to trim the height of the cork tape. This should be done using a sharp knife, having first outlined the cut location on the strip. It is better to glue the compensator with wood glue, having previously cleaned and degreased the installation site. The compensator installation algorithm is as follows:
- thorough preparation of the joint by clearing mechanical debris, removing dust and priming;
- applying a thin strip of glue near the edge of the lamellas;
- laying the compensator tape on the applied glue and fixing the end edge;
- applying sealant between the edges of the laminate and the expansion joint;
- removing excess sealant using a wet cloth and then wiping the joint dry.
Further installation of the tiles is carried out from the formed joint. This will ensure a tighter fit between the cork and the ceramic. After installation is completed and the sealant and glue have completely dried, the cork seam, which does not have a veneered end edge, is sanded and varnished.
Installation of a liquid cork expansion joint should begin by applying masking tape to all edges of already laid surfaces. The joint is cleaned of mechanical debris and dusted. Work should be carried out at an air temperature of at least 5 degrees. Installation of a liquid cork compensator consists of the following steps:
- pour the composition from the tube into a wide container;
- fill the seam with a spatula or an air gun;
- cut off excess sealant with a spatula;
- wait for the surface to completely dry, which depends on the thickness of the connector, the width of the seam and the temperature and is 24-48 hours;
- remove the masking tape and wipe off any remaining sealant from the floor.
A cork expansion joint between the tiles and the laminate will allow you to achieve a perfect connection between the two surfaces and make the floor impressive and neat.

Methods of joining without a threshold
With changes in temperature and humidity, materials can expand, especially laminate. Therefore, a gap between these materials is required. It must be filled with some elastic material.
Cork compensator
This material is a strip of cork. On one side it can be either painted or covered with a layer of natural wood veneer (in this case the cost is more expensive). The standard length of the material strip is 900 mm, non-standard - from 1200 mm to 3000 mm (on request), width - 7 mm or 10 mm, height - 15 mm, or 18 mm, or 20 mm, or 22 mm. When the joint is located under a doorway, a standard length of material is usually sufficient.
Installation of a cork compensator
Before installation, you need to determine the dimensions of the compensator strip. The height should correspond to the thickness of the floor covering, the width to the width of the gap. The permissible joint width between tiles and laminate is 1 cm.
For installation, do the following:
- clean the edges of tiles and laminate to eliminate cracks and chips;
- remove dirt and dust from the floor;
- coat the gap between the tiles and the laminate with glue;
- place a compensator in the gap, fix the end edge;
- lift the strip from the laminate side and pour in a small amount of sealant;
- remove excess sealant using a wet cloth;
- If the compensator strip protrudes above the floor surface, cut off the excess with a knife.
If the end strip of the cork expansion joint is not covered with veneer, then after the sealant and glue have dried, the end edge should be sanded and varnished.
Grouting joints
The pre-laminated edge is coated with silicone. The same material fills the joint to two thirds. After the silicone dries, the unfilled part is filled with a material called joint grout. After application it should be leveled.
Liquid plug
This relatively soft connector is a sealed material consisting of balsa tree bark chips mixed with a water-based bonding solution. The joint is obtained with the texture and color of cork. The compensator parameters can be different:
- standard length is 900 mm, the maximum length of custom-made products is 3000 mm;
- width – 7 mm and 10 mm;
- minimum height – 15 mm, maximum – 22 mm.
Material having a standard length is appropriate to use if the joint is located under the door. In this case, this size will be quite sufficient. In other situations, you will either have to connect several compensators together, or make an individual order.
How can you connect the transition?
To neatly design the gap between functional areas, four materials are most often used.
Grout
An easy way to seal winding, shallow seams. Such thresholds are difficult to find, and other fillers will not look so organic. Often in modern interiors there is an interesting way of finishing the floor: polygonal ceramic parts “incline” a little into an area with a different coating. This separates the hallway area from the rest of the house and the kitchen area from the living room. In this case, the transition is also carried out using grout. Do it in the following order:
- Carry out preparatory work.
- Treat the edges of the second material with silicone compound.
- Fill the resulting seam halfway with it.
- Wait for it to dry.
- Dilute the grout, spread it on top and level it with a spatula.
- Wipe the finished dried layer with a damp cloth and cover it with clear varnish to extend its service life.

Silicone and acrylic sealant
Joining two sections with elastic sealant is even easier than with grout. The advantage of the method is that there is no need to additionally treat the boards to protect them from moisture. But there is one point - you need to take into account that after drying the filler will turn light brown. The acrylic filler can be painted in a suitable shade after it has dried. Both expansion joints are suitable for renovation work in new buildings, as they are able to adapt to the shrinkage of the building.
Sequence of work:
- Place masking tape on both sides of the seam so you don’t have to waste time scrubbing it off later.
- Make a hole in the silicone paste tube so that it can be squeezed out, or insert it into a special gun.
- Fill the gap so that the sealant extends slightly above the floor surface.
- Use a spatula to remove excess mixture. If you don’t have a spatula, you can wait until the mixture dries and cut off the excess.
Keep in mind that it takes one or two days for the sealant to dry completely. Silicone expansion joints are recommended for use in rooms where the flooring is secured with glue or fasteners.

Liquid plug

One of the most popular ways to design boundaries between two floor coverings. The filler is a soft, pressed lath or whole sheets with the same characteristics. The compensator has several advantages:
- Possibility to choose the appropriate color.
- Ability to withstand building shrinkage and dimensional fluctuations of laminated strips.
- Suitable for wide seams.

For this material it is also desirable that both areas are at the same level. Otherwise, the result will not look aesthetically pleasing.
Sequence of working with the filler:
- Adjust the rail to the desired size or cut the part from the sheet.
- Apply adhesive to the entire width of the laminate or tile, and a thin layer of sealant to the bottom.
- Glue the compensator and cover it on top with an antiseptic and clear varnish.

In addition, the substance contains specialized polymer substances, water, fillers and binders that make cork sealants of the required thickness and texture. Sealants based on such oak bark have a significantly higher cost than substitutes made from any other type of wood.
When cork sealants cure, they acquire the following characteristics:

- low heat conductivity;
- environmental cleanliness and safety;
- resistance to chemicals and physical and mechanical influences.
Depending on the type of binders present in the sealant, it will have certain characteristics. Typically, polyacrylate glue is used as binding components, which is a water-soluble mixture that does not release harmful or toxic substances during hardening. Polyacrylates increase the adhesion (adhesion) rate of cork sealant with various types of materials, such as, for example, tiles, laminate, parquet and others. Polyacrylates combine well with cork coatings and eliminate certain disadvantages of these seams and surfaces, for example, poor resistance to ultraviolet rays, acidic environments, and low hygroscopicity.
Use for soundproofing
Cork sealing products are often used for gluing soundproofing sheets and boards, as well as for sealing seams between these panels. The material significantly reduces the noise level, and when applied to a subfloor, it eliminates the squeaks of wooden boards. The product is used for soundproofing machines, installing certain blocks and components, and also makes it possible to reduce vibration of generators, machine tools, and other electrical equipment.
Basic rules for joining different floor coverings
To fill the joint between the laminate and the tiles, it is not necessary to use a threshold; you can do the job in another way, using a liquid plug. When laying coatings, the following rules must be observed:
- An important point is the order in which different types of flooring are laid. First, the tiles should be laid, and the laminate should be adjusted under it.
- When cutting tiles, there should be no chips or cracks, so the work is done carefully.
- When laying the laminate, it is necessary that the cut line be strictly straight.
- At the junction points, the backing under the laminate is cut off, and the boards must be attached to the concrete base using glue.
