The use of built-in and cabinet furniture is considered the most affordable option for independent housing redevelopment. There are many models of such furniture, but the two-door wardrobe takes a special place of honor in this line. Let's figure out what these cabinets are, where it is best to place them, and most importantly, how to properly distribute the space inside the cabinet.

The two-door wardrobe is still considered the most popular furniture in small apartments

Advantages and disadvantages

A cabinet with a mezzanine has the following advantages:

  • capacity - this type of furniture can be used to accommodate a large number of things;

  • a wide range of prices from the most affordable for the average citizen to the expensive VIP category;
  • A 2-door wardrobe will help hide the imperfections of the walls.
  • There are no disadvantages to a double-door wardrobe.

    Varieties

    Cabinets with two doors are divided according to the following characteristics:

    • number of doors;
    • type of door opening: swing doors - doors with wings and opening outwards, requiring additional space;
    • accordion - the doors fold like accordion bellows;
    • coupe - sliding type of opening.
  • location:
      two-door corner wardrobe;
  • straight;
  • built-in
  • filling elements:
      cabinet with shelves;
  • with drawers;
  • with shelves and bar;
  • other details.
  • by purpose:
      2-door wardrobe – showcase;
  • for documentation, school supplies, books;
  • double-sided cabinet instead of a partition;
  • for clothes, bed linen;
  • for dishes and so on.
  • manufacturing material:
      Laminated chipboard is the most affordable material; it makes an economy 2-door wardrobe that everyone can afford. It is produced from shavings of inexpensive tree species using hot pressing. Furniture made from chipboard is covered with a moisture-resistant film of the required color;
  • MDF is considered a softer and more environmentally friendly material, which is made from small wood fibers joined with paraffin;
  • solid wood is a classic, expensive material. Cabinets made of natural, solid wood, cheaper ones, are made from birch and pine. An expensive wardrobe with 2 doors is made from teak, oak, or beech.

    wardrobes are the best option for any room, especially if it is not large in size. Most often they are:

    • built-in - this type of furniture is characterized by maximum efficiency. A 2-door wardrobe allows you to save on material, since, depending on the design, it does not need side, top, or rear partitions; they will be replaced by the walls and ceiling of the room. The disadvantage is that such furniture cannot be moved, moved, or transported;
    • case - this model has many similarities with its swing relatives and differs only in the design of the door. It can be easily sent to the country or transported to a new apartment when moving.

    Built-in

    Hull
    Coupes are divided into the following models:

    • radius, which have unusual shapes. This type of cabinet with 2 doors is often used by designers to create an individual, original interior without sacrificing functionality. The cost of such a model may be inflated due to the complex door opening system;
    • corner double door wardrobe. Ideal for saving space and decorating empty corners, making them useful;
    • straight - a classic that can be with or without a mezzanine, always looks great anywhere, regardless of the interior. Can be double-sided for zoning.

    To make the right choice, you need to analyze all of the above factors before purchasing.

    Places for accommodation

    The assembly and especially the filling of the cabinet largely depends on its location. After all, in the hallway, living room and on the balcony different things will be placed in such cabinets, and accordingly the layout of the sections should be different.

    Balcony

    A full-fledged sliding wardrobe on a balcony can only be installed if the balcony is insulated or at least well-glazed. Often, balcony closets play the role of a small closet; there are no essentials there.

    It would be wise to allocate a section for winter outerwear. Due to its location, the balcony is best ventilated, so moths will never get into your fur coat. The upper sector is traditionally reserved for winter hats or warm blankets. Side shelves and drawers are used for household items or canned goods.

    Built-in furniture is ideal for a balcony or loggia.

    In a standard city apartment, skilled people have a built-in closet on an insulated loggia that plays the role of a mini workshop. All tools, as well as small accessories such as nails, screws, corners and other devices, are stored there, so good lighting and a couple of sockets will not be amiss here.

    Hallway

    Furniture in the hallway is needed, first of all, for storing outerwear and shoes. Moreover, it is advisable to allocate two vertical sections for outerwear, one for those things that are currently being worn, and the second will store clothes awaiting their season.

    The same is true with shoes. Most of the lower space is given over to shoes; one half of the shoe section should be open, and it is advisable to cover the other with a hinged door. This way, in winter or autumn, wet boots will not come into direct contact with “dress” shoes or sandals.

    The two-door wardrobe perfectly complements the modular design for the hallway.

    In addition to outerwear, there are a lot of small but very necessary things in the hallway, such as umbrellas, bags, keys, shoe care products, etc. It turns out that the wardrobe in the hallway is divided into 4 parts:

    1. On one side there are 2 vertical sections for winter outerwear;
    2. On the other hand (at least a third of the total width) is given over to drawers and shelves for small items;
    3. There are 2 shoe compartments at the bottom, plus here you can arrange a niche for a vacuum cleaner; it would be in place in the hallway;
    4. The upper part, accessible to an adult, is given over to hats. Since sliding wardrobes are made up to the ceiling, there is also an uppermost sector; this sector can only be reached from a stepladder or from a chair, so everyone decides for themselves what to load there, usually large suitcases and travel bags.

    Budget models of hallway furniture are not equipped with drawers at all.

    Living room and bedroom

    For the living room and bedroom, the arrangement of the sections of the two-door design is not much different. In both cases, there is a department equipped with a barbell for trempels with suits, dresses and shirts.

    The design of two-door structures for the living room and bedroom is not much different.

    At eye level, in the central part there are shelves and drawers with frequently used items. Here you can also provide a box for valuable items. There is a separate section for bed linen with shelves at least 60 cm wide.

    Bedding cannot be stored in the lower sector, so the beginning of the “bed” section should be planned at a height of 50 cm above the floor.

    Shape and dimensions

    The main factor for choosing a cabinet is the shape and size of the room where it will be installed. These parameters will help you decide what the furniture design will be:

    • with mezzanines that will increase the space above and create space for non-essential items;
    • diagonal-corner, which will save room space and occupy empty areas of the room;
    • a wardrobe partition that will divide one room into several functional areas;
    • radius with original shapes, which are most often used to increase internal volume;
    • classical.

    The main detail of each cabinet is the doors; they can be made of glass, finishing plates with a mirror finish. Decorative elements may also depend on the shape and size of the furniture.

    With mezzanines
    A corner cabinet with 2 doors can be:

    • g-shaped - cabinets are attached to each other in the shape of this letter;
    • triangle - the structure is built into a corner and covered with the selected facade;
    • trapezoid - furniture is made in the form of a trapezoid, decorated with shelves on the sides.

    Radius cabinets are made to individual measurements, and each has its own special design. The configuration features the following designs:

    • concave shapes that expand space by smoothing corners with increased capacity. Fits harmoniously into any interior;
    • convex shapes are rarely used, since they require a large space in the room;
    • wavy designs look good in spacious, rectangular rooms.

    The choice of configurations for radius cabinets is large, it all depends on the imagination of the customer and the professionalism of the contractor. Such furniture will decorate any home and become an ideal, functional decor for the room.

    The standard dimensions of the sliding wardrobe are presented in the table.

    WidthDepthHeight
    Minimum900 mm350 mmAt the request of the customer
    Maximum2700 mm900 mm2700 mm

    If you want to calculate a cabinet with a mezzanine (maximum height), then you can apply a special formula. The sliding wardrobe can be of any reasonable size, which is calculated depending on the wishes of the customer, the dimensions of the room, and the established budget.

    Options for two-door wardrobes

    The layout of two-door wardrobes looks poor compared to their multi-door counterparts. The thing is that, according to the rules, the size of one section of sliding doors should not exceed 70 cm, respectively, the maximum for such a cabinet does not exceed 1400 mm.

    Standard dimensions of two-door wardrobes.

    It should be taken into account that the minimum overlap of doors with a completely closed facade is 30 mm. Otherwise, an ugly gap will be visible in the center between the sashes.

    Straight two-door wardrobe

    When assembling, a straight cabinet is considered the simplest design, especially if we are talking about a version that is completely built into a niche. Here it makes sense to order a facade with a sliding mechanism from a furniture workshop, and do all the filling yourself. Option 2:

    1. Knock down the internal frame from a wooden beam and then attach shelves, drawers and other elements to its base;
    2. Make a frame with shelves from laminated chipboard or MDF sheets. This option is simpler, since after drawing up a sketch and calculating the material, you order cutting and lamination of the ends at a furniture workshop, after which you assemble the cage for confirmations. As a result, you get an inner cage no worse than the factory one.

    Sketch and approximate layout of materials for ordering an internal cage of a two-door design.

    The cabinet door section size of 70 cm is recommended. There are cabinets in which the door width reaches 1 m or more, but a reinforced roller system is installed there, since the door is heavy. It is better for an amateur not to attempt to independently assemble such a structure.

    Wardrobes with wide doors require professional assembly.

    Corner cupboard

    A corner wardrobe is the most optimal in terms of saving usable space. Corners in small rooms are considered the most problematic place, but here by cutting off the corner to the ceiling, you get not just a closet, in fact it is already a small dressing room.

    The photo below shows the most popular version of the corner design. Here, 2 side walls are made monolithic, therefore, if the cabinet is large, you can install a two-section roller system, which will be much cheaper, and will look no worse than the same three-door system.

    A corner cabinet for a two-section roller system is relatively inexpensive and spacious.

    Facades with mirror

    A mirror has the ability to visually increase the volume of a room, and since we are talking about small-sized apartments, mirrored cabinets are more than relevant here. The only disadvantage of glass in general and mirror facades in particular is their fragility.

    Mirror furniture facades fit especially well into the loft style.

    Of course, they are now producing mirrors for facades made of tempered glass, which is difficult to break, but even if it breaks, it breaks into small and relatively harmless fragments, something like car glass.

    But facades made of tempered glass are expensive, so people buy ordinary mirrors and cover them with polymer film. So when broken, all the fragments remain on the film. The strength of such mirrors is an order of magnitude lower, but they cost more than half as much.

    To increase strength, some owners glue a sheet of argolite or fiberboard to the back wall of the mirror using liquid nails.

    It is not at all necessary to mount a mirror on the entire facade; it is enough to equip it with the central part of the door sections.

    Facade design options

    The main design of the cabinet facade is the decoration of the door; it is the face of this furniture. For finishing use:

    • Chipboard is an economical, simple option that is used for inexpensive structures and goes well with a small budget;
    • mirror - a wardrobe with a mirror looks very good in a bedroom or hallway, it expands the space and reflects light, which increases the illumination of the room. You can also apply a sandblasted design to the door or stick interesting appliqués on it;
    • colored glass is initially transparent and gets its color from the ORACAL adhesive film, which also serves as protection against splinters if the fragile material breaks;
    • bamboo for the cabinet - these are sections of stems varnished in a neutral color;
    • Eco-leather is a polymer film of different colors on a fabric base with a texture specially achieved by embossing. Visually and to the touch, the material is no different from leather;
    • Photo printing is applied to transparent glass and protects it from the risk of breaking.

    You can also use self-adhesive photo wallpaper, which is specially produced for compartment doors.

    When creating a facade, it is worth considering the following parameters:

    • in which room the furniture will be located. For example, for a nursery it is best to choose bright decor. For small rooms, a two-door wardrobe in white, off-white, or light gray is suitable; this will help to visually make the room larger. For those who love unusual colors, you can use purple shades that are fashionable this season. A double-leaf wardrobe with a mirror will look good in the hallway. Neutral colors will be appropriate in the bedroom, without unnecessary accents;
    • dimensions of the structure - this parameter helps to choose the right decor, color or combination of finishes.

    The interior of the apartment, the taste and budget of the owner are also taken into account.

    Materials

    The list of materials used for the manufacture of double-leaf wardrobes includes:

    1. Chipboard. One of the most popular options (due to its low cost). The construction of laminated chipboards will last a relatively long time. However, during operation, a small amount of formaldehyde will be released into the air.
    2. Fiberboard. Used for making back walls and bottoms for drawers. It has minimal strength. But it is inexpensive and has virtually no effect on the weight of the structure.
    3. MDF. One of the most popular materials for the facade of a wardrobe. Advantages: durability and a wide variety of colors. Cons: high cost (compared to chipboard).
    4. Natural wood. The most aesthetic material, it is chosen for its luxurious appearance and fragrant smell. Fits perfectly into a classic interior. But the cost of a cabinet made from natural solid wood will be quite high.

    Chipboard MDF Natural wood
    The facades of the wardrobe do not need to be decorated. When using MDF coated with natural veneer, the furniture will look quite attractive. The most profitable, but also the least aesthetic option is a facade made of chipboard without additional finishing. If the decorative characteristics of furniture are more important than economy, more attractive-looking materials can be used for the manufacture of front panels:

    • solid wood, which significantly increases the cost, but gives the impression that the entire wardrobe is made of it;
    • a mirror surface (simple or with a sandblasted pattern), which looks advantageous in any room, expanding it and making it lighter, but is more fragile;
    • bamboo or rattan is the best option for rooms decorated in oriental or ethnic style;
    • plastic - this coating is durable, but is not suitable for any interior and can fade under the influence of sunlight;
    • glass - an opaque frosted glass door partially hides things inside and looks original, and its only drawback is its high cost.

    How to choose components for a wardrobe, useful tips

    Other popular options include facades made of chipboard or MDF, coated with varnish or acrylic paint. Using photo printing will help make furniture more original.

    For the manufacture of original facades, eco-leather is used, which is pleasant to the touch and adds a stylish appearance to the furniture.

    Inner space

    Modern furniture manufacturers offer a large selection of cabinet filling; each buyer can choose the following details:

    • pantograph is an opportunity to use the upper space due to a rod with a handle, which are lowered using a special mechanism;
    • baskets for various small items;
    • bars for hangers, ties;
    • hooks for outerwear;
    • trouser holders;
    • drawers;
    • shoe racks;
    • storage compartment for ironing board.

    You can also order a 2-door wardrobe of the required size and with a mezzanine. It is worth knowing that some filling elements are a waste of money and you can easily do without them. Therefore, when choosing what will be inside the structure, it is worth considering whether this or that part is needed, for which you will have to pay.

    It is best to choose designs with a mezzanine, a classic barbell, drawers and shelves. The hallway model can be equipped with a shoe rack. This will save money and make the space inside more comfortable and familiar, without unnecessary, unnecessary clutter.

    Filling two-door wardrobes

    If until recently the filling of a closet consisted of shelves, drawers and rods, now there are many more furniture accessories. Plus, the traditional content has changed greatly.

    Rules for arranging the interior space of furniture.

    Shelves

    Shelves are considered the only part of the cabinet that has not changed in any way over the centuries. It is not so important what you plan to store on the shelves, the main thing is that the height of the shelf is at least 30 cm. Otherwise, it will be inconvenient for you to get things that are closer to the back wall.

    The minimum height of a standard shelf in a closet starts from 300 mm

    Boxes

    With drawers it’s a little different; here, on the contrary, for comfortable use the height of the drawer should not exceed 150–200 mm. If you want to save money, then you need to order boxes at a minimum, because arranging 1 box costs the same as assembling 3-4 shelves.

    The only thing you shouldn't skimp on is the guides for the drawers. Plastic and metal fittings are now being produced; from experience, in frequently used drawers, plastic guides break within a couple of years, and metal has a 10-year warranty, so draw your own conclusions.

    When arranging drawers, it is better to give preference to metal guides on rollers.

    Barbells

    The bar is a transverse pipe on which trempels with clothes are hung. According to the rules, it is mounted at a distance of 270 mm from the rear wall, but this rule only works in cabinets with a depth of 500 mm. In small cabinets, such rods are either not installed at all or are mounted in the middle of the depth.

    The classic bar is mounted parallel to the facade and rear wall, but in addition to it there are also retractable crossbars that are installed perpendicular to the rear wall and attached to the top floor slab.

    There are several types of hangers for clothes in wardrobes.

    Perpendicular rods are considered a good solution for small cabinets, but they have one big drawback - these designs are not designed for heavy weight. That is, they will hold shirts and a couple of suits, but you shouldn’t hang winter clothes there.

    The best solution for tall sliding wardrobes would be a pantograph with a microlift. This is a rod mounted on two racks, which in turn are equipped with a rotating mechanism. As a result, things hanging on the bar near the ceiling can be smoothly lowered to a comfortable height and then the bar can be returned to its original position.

    Additional items

    IllustrationsRecommendations

    Baskets.
    Baskets can be classic or drawer-shaped, but they are all made from mesh.

    Metal and plastic baskets are available. So, everything that extends is better to take from metal.

    Trouser .
    This is a retractable grille with guides for trousers. In more expensive models, each guide extends separately; in the budget version, the entire sector moves out.
    Tiemaker.
    This is something like a large “comb”, on the narrow slats of which ties are hung. The design can be retractable or stationary. In addition to ties, trouser belts are often hung on such combs.

    It would be appropriate to place additional lighting next to the tie holder to make it more convenient to select a tie to match a particular suit.

    Selection rules

    To choose the right cabinet, you need to pay attention to the following factors:

    • size of the structure - knowledgeable people advise, if possible, to immediately order a large wardrobe, since over time a lot of things accumulate and children appear;
    • door opening mechanism. It’s better to choose an option with protection against the roller slipping and getting hit by random objects;
    • door movement profile. The aluminum element does not create unnecessary noise, while the steel profile is more reliable and lasts much longer;
    • wheels - it is better to choose from metal. Plastic rollers will last a minimal amount of time and create many problems;
    • door material - the facade in this case needs to be thought out more carefully, mirror and glass are not always good, and simple design is bad. For example, a cabinet for household equipment should not be finished at all, since in this case less noticeable furniture is a priority;
    • correctly selected internal filling can make the design as functional as possible, but you shouldn’t get too carried away. The two-door option with shelves is optimal;
    • manufacturer - it is best to choose trusted companies and buy or order furniture from well-known places. Private carpentry shops can offer low-quality products without a guarantee and the possibility of returning them.

    The most important thing when choosing is to rely on your taste, needs and capabilities, then you can choose a practical and functional double-door wardrobe.
