Paneled doors: features and main characteristics (23 photos)

Adviсe

The interior of a room is based not only on a combination of colors and various shapes, but also on other elements that allow you to give the room a complete and original look

These “highlights” can be found as independent accessories, for example, vases, figurines, paintings, or as part of a furniture and door set. Today we will talk about one of these accessories - paneled doors, which are increasingly being used by designers to create interesting interior solutions.

Design Features

What a door panel is in its essence is already clear. Now you need to understand the design of such a canvas as a whole. How is the panel attached? It is inserted into a frame, which most often consists of solid wood beams and is fixed inside by inserting into special grooves. To ensure that the insert does not dangle and is securely fastened in the frame, you can additionally glue or nail thin glazing beads.

A paneled door made of laminated material looks very impressive

Paneled structures have their own classification. The criterion in this case is the shape of the insertion.

The panel can be:

  • Flat - a thin sheet of material, absolutely smooth, without protrusions or cutters.
  • Volumetric – characterized by the presence of figured volumetric elements with milling around the perimeter. This performance is considered classic and is found in most cases.
  • Stacked - consists of several lamellas that are joined to each other using the tongue and groove method.

The following types should also be distinguished:

  • Figarea – a figarea is an internal insert with thick edges that become thinner towards the edge of the part. Such a panel is attached to longitudinal grooves and fixed with wood glue.
  • Floating - allows you to prevent the destruction of the material by leaving gaps around the perimeter. The insert can freely change in size depending on the microclimate in the room. It is secured with glazing beads.

Application

The range of application of such door leaf models is limited only by the imagination of the developers. They are used both in residential premises and in office interiors.

The use of paneled door panels is determined by their functional parameters and the materials used.

For the construction of interior openings, models are selected whose panels are made of simpler and less durable materials, among which priority is given to plywood and thin MDF. Entrance groups require greater strength. MDF is almost never used here. Preference is given to products made of metal or hardwood.

Let's figure out how paneled doors are designed. How is the panel attached? The frame in doors of this type is made of wooden beams, which can be solid or glued. Special grooves are used to insert and fix the panels inside. To improve the reliability of fastening the panel inside the frame, thin glazing beads are used, which are glued or nailed on top of the panel.

Materials

There are panel doors that are designed for indoor use; in addition, there are options that can be used as exterior doors. These two types have significant differences in materials of manufacture.

  • conifers such as pine, spruce or cedar;
  • deciduous, such as oak, beech, elm, walnut or teak;
  • exotic, for example, wenge, rosewood or Karelian birch.

Such products are called solid wood doors, they are quite heavy and durable, provide good sound insulation and are quite expensive.

Wood surface treatment is usually carried out in several stages:

  • primer, which is applied in two layers to achieve the desired shade of wood;
  • coating with a two-component varnish that has protective and decorative functions.

In many cases, wood parts are combined with lightweight materials: MDF, fiberboard, chipboard. To increase their service life, combined doors are laminated and a layer of PVC film is applied, which protects porous wood substitutes from exposure to atmospheric moisture.

Often such doors are hollow inside or filled with various types of filler:

  • corrugated cardboard;
  • wooden blocks;
  • Chipboard.

To obtain a more noble appearance, doors are often covered with a material such as veneer , which is a thin (2 - 3 mm) cut of natural wood of valuable species. Veneer has a texture and color indistinguishable from solid wood, and is fixed with various types of wood glue.

Sometimes plastic panel panels, called eco-veneer, which are used to cover bases made of comparatively inexpensive wood. At the same time, the front surface of such panels is made with an imitation of wood texture; moreover, to enhance the effect, it is covered with a polypropylene film of the corresponding pattern. Such “hybrids” are installed in rooms with high humidity, for example, in bathrooms, swimming pools or greenhouses.

Entrance doors are made of thicker solid wood; metal trims are often used to strengthen them. In many cases, the frame is made entirely of metal, enriched with wooden panels.

Materials used

The frame of the paneled structure is made of dry wood treated with protective impregnations. In the budget version, pine is used. The frames of expensive models are assembled from hard wood.

Many materials are used to make panels, but they are conventionally divided into three groups:

  • Canvas from softwood. Budget panel doors made from solid wood are treated with oil impregnation, which protects the material from the harmful effects of moisture. Coniferous wood is used to make the insert. Paneled products made from solid wood are installed in dachas, country houses, and indoor apartments.

  • Inserting from hardwood. Expensive solid wood models are characterized by increased strength. In the production of paneled material, oak, beech, walnut and other valuable species are used. Doors are installed in government agencies, luxury buildings, and offices.

  • Canvas made of combined materials . This is the most versatile, popular and budget-friendly panel. The insert is made from pressed plywood, fiberboard, chipboard, glass, solid pine. The frame is usually assembled from hardwood. The cheapest material is fiberboard. Often such white panel doors can be seen inside apartments with inexpensive renovations, in hospitals, and other government institutions. In rooms with high humidity, models with plastic or glass inserts, as well as those covered with eco-veneer, are installed.

Separately, it is worth considering veneered panel doors. In the production of panels, veneering is used. The process involves gluing chipboard with veneer. Veneer is a thin layer of wood removed from a log. The material can be sheet or roll. It is glued to chipboard, MDF, plywood and natural wood - pine.

Design options

Since the variety of materials used is almost unlimited, it is not surprising that a product such as a paneled door can be made in any style and design. This allows you to choose the optimal model for any interior and type of room.

A paneled door can be successfully decorated with glass elements

For living rooms, especially the living room, and kitchen, paneled doors with translucent inserts are often selected. That is, the ideal solution is to use glass as the central part. For the bathroom and toilet, the choice is limited to blind inserts. However, this does not at all prevent you from creating a unique interior. First of all, it should be taken into account that all doorways in the house must be decorated in the same style.

Modern technologies make it possible to produce paneled doors in any style. This is possible thanks to a wide palette of coatings (veneer, laminate, PVC, etc.), as well as a variety of cutters. Inserts can be straight or curly, of almost any shape, and contain additional overlays, volumetric elements, carvings and elaborate relief. If desired, over time you can replace the boring middle. If the paneled doors have glass, you can apply a design to it, turn a simple canvas into a stained glass window, or cover it with film with a photograph, pattern, or any image you like. This design does not limit you in anything.

How to calculate values for an opening using measurements

The opening does not always comply with GOST or another standard. Then you have to measure them. Each parameter has its own scheme.

  • The height is measured from the lowest point on the floor (if there is a baseboard, it must be taken into account) to the highest. The opening can be uneven, then measurements begin in the narrowing area and go to the casing;
  • Width is measured based on height. It is important to note that the measurement is not taken from the top, but exactly in the middle - the height is divided in half and measured from the center point of the right casing to the center point of the left. Again, if the opening is uneven, the narrowing is also fixed;
  • The depth is measured from above and below and in the center, the maximum value is found and then based only on it.

Characteristics

The design of doors with panels is simple and well thought out. The base is most often a frame made of spliced solid wood; a frame, also usually made of wood, is attached to it, into which the panels are inserted directly into the base. The fastening of the base and inserts is carried out either with wood glue, or with liquid nails, or by means of a tongue-and-groove joint, which is fixed with glazing beads.

For serious manufacturers, during the assembly stage, the fabric must be tightened with screws, which gives the structure additional strength.

For increased resistance to changes in humidity and physical impacts, a technological chamfer is made at the junction of longitudinal and transverse sections.

Panel inserts can be not only decorative, they can also serve a functional purpose. In the latter case, a structure is created from two plates, between which a layer of insulation is installed. Such insulated doors can be installed as entrance doors, or to transition to an unheated room - to a balcony or veranda.

Some doors may be decorated with stained glass or satin glass inserts, which must be at least 4 mm thick. Such inserts are installed in the grooves of the frame using a silicone seal.

Typically, when sold, the kit includes a door frame, the design of which includes a groove for the platband and the presence of a seal in the door part.

Platbands and extensions can be made from either linear solid wood or MDF . The appearance of the platbands varies depending on the style of the door; in most cases they are semicircular or rectangular with rounded edges. Recently, telescopic frames have begun to be produced, which are very convenient and do not require nails during installation.

Manufacturers

On the Russian market you can buy wooden doors both Russian and foreign made. The leaders in this industry can be judged by the number of titles offered and the presence of reviews on the Internet:

  1. One of them became. This brand makes door blocks of different levels, both economy and premium, with glass inserts of its own production, which were developed by the company’s designers. There are quite a lot of reviews for such products and almost all are positive. Consumers praise design solutions that make it possible to order several doors at once in the same style. They also note the high-quality processing of edges and ends, and reasonable cost. Among the disadvantages are long delivery times.
  2. MARIO RIOLI is a brand from Italy, which has its production in the Russian Federation. A full cycle method is used here, from drying the wood and design development to delivery and installation. Reviews, oddly enough, are most often negative. Buyers do not like the laminate coating, as well as the ill-conceived design of the edge at the end. One of the advantages is the installation of locks and hinges at the production site.
  3. Europan produces interior doors that are created in accordance with international standards. As the manufacturer says, the doors are made from laminated coniferous solids, and eco-veneer is used as a covering. According to customer reviews, this is a reasonable compromise in terms of price and quality, noting that it is quite stylish and quite a budget option.
  4. "LineDor" is engaged in the creation of all types of doors, including paneled ones. Enterprises have the entire cycle of well-functioning and at the same time proven production. Buyers rate doors from this manufacturer at a fairly high level. Among the advantages are telescopic frames that do not require nails during installation, the ability to choose matte black glass with an anti-vandal coating, and also variety.
  5. "Volkhovets" makes doors with frames and panels from MDF and softwood, finished with CIPLEX. There are many reviews on the door of such a factory, most often praising the quality and thoughtfulness of the design and fittings. One of the disadvantages is often the fact that it is said that the door covering is not resistant to humidity, and therefore it is better not to use them in the bathroom.
  6. “Furniture Massive” is made in Russia, and is produced using equipment and technical equipment. lines in Spain and Italy, and during processing they use German-made paints and varnishes. The covering is made of real veneer, and reviews of such doors are quite good. Buyers like that all the holes for handles and locks are cut out in production, and the veneer coating is durable.
  7. “Leader” produces doors made from real solid wood, which are at an average price level. These are beech and Caucasian oak, which are subjected to various staining methods, including brushing and patination. Italian varnishes, as well as German primers, protect the material from moisture, and therefore, according to customer reviews, there are no complaints about the Leader doors. They note that such doors look like they are at a premium level, but at the same time they are affordable.

Choosing doors is the final stage in apartment design. Most often, owners buy several doors in the same style to create a harmonious picture. The choice of color will depend on personal preferences, but remember that dark colors can visually “eat up” the volume of a room, while light colors expand it.

Main types of panels

Modern panels are very diverse due to the many faces of design solutions. Shape, size, relief, painting, and much more become ideal tools for decoration. Thus, all paneled doors are divided into three main groups:

  • Doors with panels made of valuable types of wood - oak, teak, walnut and others. In this case, tongue-and-groove fasteners are used, due to which the canvas as a whole receives greater strength.
  • With panels made of soft wood (birch, pine and others)
  • With combined panels made of chipboard, fiberboard and plywood. In production they are laminated and covered with veneer. These doors are the cheapest, which makes them the most popular on the market. These also include doors using glass inserts.

Repair and restoration of panel doors

Even the most durable and reliable door may sooner or later require repair or restoration. Every owner can encounter wear on the hinges, skewing of the canvas, loosening or cracking of the panels.

Loose panels can be fixed using glazing beads or glue, and the presence of small gaps and cracks can be hidden using putty and paint. Simply fill the crack, sand it and coat it with varnish or paint to match the door.

Currently, there are many special markers and pencils for removing scratches from the surface of the door leaf

If the damage to the panels is serious, you cannot do without replacing them. The complexity of this process depends on how the panels are secured to your door.

Table: the process of replacing panels depending on their fastening in the door

Mounting typeReplacement process
Fastening with tongues and grooves
  • Remove the door from its hinges.
  • We carefully disassemble the door into parts, excluding breakage of the tenons and grooves.
  • We replace the damaged part with a new one.
  • We put the door back together using glue.
Fastening with glazing beads
  • We remove the glazing beads from one side of the door.
  • We take out the damaged panel.
  • We install a new one.
  • Glue or nail the glazing beads back.

As you can see, if the panels are attached using glazing beads, then the replacement process is the least labor-intensive and quick. In this case, there will be no need to remove the door from its hinges.

If you change all the panels in a door, they may differ in color and shape from the previous ones. Thus, you will not only restore the door, but also update its boring appearance.

Rules of care

In order for a paneled door to serve for a long time and maintain its beautiful appearance, proper care is needed:

  1. Light scratches are covered with furniture varnish or polish.
  2. Deep damage is repaired with a wax pencil or decorative putty, and the top is covered with restoration varnish.

  3. Veneered models are rubbed once a year with a polish containing wax.
  4. For cleaning, use detergents that do not contain acids or abrasives. Then the dry surface is rubbed with polish.

  5. If painting is necessary, the canvas is first coated with a primer. After drying, you can apply any enamel, but not based on acetone or other aggressive solvents.

Each model with a panel has its own care requirements, which depend on the material of manufacture, reflected in the manufacturer’s instructions.

Paneled doors can last up to 50 years. The product must be selected correctly based on the material for certain operating conditions.

Colors

Manufacturers produce wooden paneled panels in a wide range of colors. All wooden frames of the models are impregnated with antiseptic compounds and solutions that suppress the occurrence of fungus. Finishing of products is carried out using varnish. It will retain the attractiveness of natural wood.

Some models are coated with enamels and paints. The most common are light milky and beige shades. White doors have gained massive popularity in the domestic market. They are able to visually enlarge the space, make the room “light” and “airy”.

Kinds

wooden are especially popular for various reasons . They have a rigid frame, but are complicated by panel inserts that add additional beauty and presentation to the door.

The classic type of paneled doors can be called swing doors . They are mounted on the box stand using two or three pairs of hinges; when closed, they fit tightly into the grooves and are convenient for use in rooms that are quite spacious. The advantage of swing doors is their simplicity, reliability and the ability to install locks and latches. You can decorate such doors with any type of panels, from lightweight to voluminous or weighted with overlay patterns.

Another type is sliding doors. They can have either one or two leaves, are installed on rollers and move along the upper and lower guides along the wall; this type of door is convenient in small rooms. This type includes cassette, radius and cascade doors. Most often, such structures are decorated with inserts made of stained glass or frosted glass, flat panels or inserts made of bamboo or veneered MDF.

The main thing is not to make the structure heavier, which is held vertically only by being fixed in the guides.

Paneled wooden doors can also be folding. These are so-called accordion doors, consisting of several narrow leaves connected to each other by hinges. They are attached to the door frame with hinges, and when opened, the doors move to one side. There are no locks on these doors. Very often they are made light and openwork, with thin panels made of wood or glass.

A rare and unusual variety are swinging panel doors. They can have one or two leaves, are attached to the door frame using awnings, and can swing open in both directions. Such options look very attractive due to the method of opening, so it is not customary to decorate them with complex panels.

Dimensions

There are standards for door sizes in the Russian Federation, this is GOST 6629-88. According to these standards, there are several types of height and width of the door frame:

  • height: 2071 mm; 23721 mm;
  • width: 670 mm – 970 mm, 1170 mm, 1172 mm, 1472 mm, 1872 mm.

The dimensions of the door leaf must also comply with the following standards:

  • height: 2000 mm and 2300 mm;
  • width: 600 mm, 700 mm, 800 mm, 900 mm, 1100 mm; as well as 2*600 mm, 2*700 mm, 2*900 mm.

Well-known schemes to simplify opening measurement

At first glance, it always seems that measurement formulas are complicated. But if you look into it, you can be convinced of the opposite. Moreover, such methods significantly simplify installation and are one of its stages at the planning stage - they allow you to accurately determine the values for each of the opening parameters based on the dimensions of the canvas.

First you need specific values for:

  • Canvases (width, thickness, height);
  • Door frame (width and thickness only);
  • Platbands – width;
  • Installation gap;
  • Door block;
  • The lower threshold is only height.

When you have all these values for each structural element, you need to use the following two formulas:

Width for the door leaf + 2*Thickness of the frame + Value for the installation gap + 2* Value for the door block - the value of the opening width is obtained;

Door height + Lower threshold height + 2* Frame thickness - the value for the opening height is obtained. Thus, the initial data of the canvas and a few additional values allow you to find out what the height of the doorway is and what its width is.

Design

Paneled doors are made in any designs and styles. Thanks to the extensive range, it is possible to choose a product for any type of room. For residential premises, doors with glass or transparent inserts are chosen. They can be decorated with painting (classical or modern patterns) or photo printing. For the bathroom and toilet room, the ideal solution would be a door leaf with blind slats.

Panels in interior doors are:

  • straight;
  • curly;
  • with additional pads;
  • with volumetric elements;
  • with elaborate carvings and relief.

Doors with a glass panel can be transformed yourself by applying a design to it and turning it into a stained glass window.
