How to choose a slatted bottom?
The slatted bottom, installed in the bed frame, is the ideal support for almost any mattress.
Here you can choose a slatted bottom from many different models - with or without a frame, adjustable or without the possibility of adjustment. Here you can find out what you need to pay attention to when choosing and purchasing a slatted bottom that is suitable for your mattress.
Telleviken sink
Telleviken sink
This ceramic washbasin fits perfectly under Fullen, Lillongen and Silveron vanities and is renowned for its stylish, minimalist design. But that's where all its advantages end. Buyers complain that the sink absorbs any dirt, and stains appear literally due to hand washing. So save your nerves and find good sanitary ware with a high-quality glazed finish, and leave this sink on the shelf.

Types of slatted bases
The ideal slatted bottom for your mattress
Did you know that 20% of the comfort of a sleeping place depends on the slatted bottom? If you are changing a mattress or want to make your existing one even more comfortable, pay attention to the slatted bottom. It affects the properties of the mattress and can significantly improve the quality of the entire sleeping area.
Our slatted bases use flexible slats made of bent-glued veneer. Each rail has a slightly curved shape and springs slightly when loaded. A mattress lying on such a bottom very effectively absorbs a person’s movements when he tosses and turns in his sleep.
The general rule is this: the more slats in the bottom, the more sensitive it is to the characteristics of the figure, which means the more comfortable the bed.
Based on the type of structure, a distinction is made between a slatted bottom on a frame (for example, LONSET) and a slatted bottom without a frame (for example, LUROY). Frameless slatted bases provide basic support and are less expensive.
In the slatted bottom on the frame, the slats are securely fixed using special fasteners, which eliminates the possibility of their displacement, while flexibility and effective shock absorption of movements are preserved.
The slatted bottom on the frame also allows you to make a slightly higher sleeping area with a thin mattress.
Different slatted bases may have different numbers of slats, and some also have so-called comfort zones.
In general, the dependence is as follows: the smaller the width of each slats and the closer to each other they are located, the more comfortable it is to sleep on such a bed.
Like a mattress, the slatted bottom can be divided into several comfort zones. In some models (for example, LEIRSUND), the stiffness of some slats, usually located in the shoulder area, can be adjusted using special sliders. In this way, you combine the comfort zones of the slatted bottom and the mattress, providing yourself with optimal support in the shoulders and hips and creating conditions in which your spine will maintain its anatomically correct shape.

IKEA quality guarantee
Our mattresses and slatted bases undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet both our IKEA quality and durability requirements and our high standards for domestic use. This means we can confidently offer a free 25-year warranty that applies to any material or manufacturing defects found in mattresses and bed frames.
Durability test
To test the strength and durability of our beds and mattresses, we use a machine that uses a special roller weighing 140 kg to simulate the movements of a sleeping person. Our products must withstand 50,000 cycles of such tests. During testing, the reaction of the mattress, frame and slatted bed bottom to the impact of the roller is recorded.
Pros and cons of the design
Any bed consists of a frame and a base. The latter is most often formed from wood, high-quality steel or cheap composite materials. The correct choice of this element determines how comfortable it will be to use the structure for its intended purpose. The slatted bottom of beds is considered an excellent choice for children and adults, as it has an orthopedic effect.
Such structures are usually equipped with orthopedic mattresses. This combination provides ideal conditions for complete relaxation. Typically, such a bottom is represented by a durable frame of increased rigidity. Slats, otherwise called lamellas, are attached to it. They can be straight or slightly curved. They are attached at the same distance from each other.
The main advantages of the slatted bottom include:
The most affordable models are those in which the slats are made of birch or pine. Although such a base does have many positive characteristics, there are also some disadvantages that must be taken into account during the purchase. These include:
Dimensions and parameters
The dimensions of the slatted bottom completely depend on who the sleeping place is intended for.
Bed type | Optimal dimensions of the slatted bottom |
Single | Such beds are purchased for one user. Their sizes are 80x200, 90x200, 100x200. The size of the slatted day for them should be 70x190, 80x190 and 90x190 cm, respectively. |
One and a half | Its dimensions vary from 120x200 to 140x200 cm. Accordingly, the slatted bottom can have dimensions of 110x190, 120x190, 130x190 cm. Under such conditions, more comfortable sleeping conditions are guaranteed, but this product can only be used by one person. |
Double | It is used by two people, so it must have not only the optimal length, but also a significant width. The slatted bottom for a double bed will be 150, 160, 170 cm wide and 190 or 200 cm long. |
Children's bed | Products for children should be specifically selected depending on the height of the child. The length should be 20 cm greater than the baby’s height, so if the child is 120 cm tall, then it is optimal for the bottom length to be 140 cm. You can also purchase products for growth, so often a single bed for adults is taken. Standard bottom sizes for children's beds are 80x140, 80x150, 80x160, 80x180, 80x190 cm or 90x140, 90x150, 90x160, 90x180, 90x190 cm. |
Often the frame is selected individually for a specific user. In this case, the following product parameters are taken into account:
Thus, when choosing a bed with a slatted bottom, it is important to take into account the numerous parameters of this design.
Mechanisms of transformation
Both standard beds and transformable models are equipped with slatted bottoms. The characteristics of such products differ depending on the folding mechanism.
- Manual transformation. The device is not very convenient; to unfold the bed, you need to apply considerable force, holding the base and mattress with your hands. The design provides a minimum number of mobile parts, therefore it is the most durable.
- Spring mechanism. It is a little easier to operate (compared to the first option), but still requires the use of force and does not have a long service life. The springs gradually fail and need to be replaced.
- Device with gas lift. The furniture unfolds easily, effortlessly, the mechanism operates silently, the lifting unit moves smoothly and softly. Products with a gas shock absorber are expensive.
- Electric bed. Managing the assembly and unfolding process is very simple. To do this, use the remote control, selecting the appropriate buttons. This is a rare and expensive model.
A very convenient option is a bed with an adjustable slatted bottom. The owner can change the position of the slats at his discretion. There are products in which only the upper or lower slats are adjustable. In other bases, you can customize each plank to suit yourself.

Options for slats and holders
The main positive aspect of using a slatted base is that a person’s weight is evenly distributed over the surface of the mattress. To create such a structure, lamellas or slats are used, for the formation of which various materials can be used. Experts recommend using products made from natural wood:
The slats have a width ranging from 5 to 10 cm. The maximum this figure can reach is 12 cm. They are laid across the bed. Between them, the same step is necessarily formed, equal to 5-7 cm.
To create a slatted base, it is allowed to use narrow slats, the width of which does not exceed 3 cm. They should be attached at a close distance from each other. A high-quality base must be equipped with lamellas, the number of which cannot be less than 15 pieces. They are attached to the frame with special holders. The most commonly used fasteners are made of rubber, equipped with specific shock absorbers. They are designed for heavy loads. Thanks to them, you can be sure that even after a long period of use there will be no unpleasant squeaking.
Beds in which the slatted bottom is formed by attaching slats to the frame with plastic holders are considered affordable. They have low strength and resistance to high loads. Such a base must be used carefully, since if the maximum loads are exceeded, this may cause the product to break.

Additional functions
The number of functions and capabilities provided to different types of beds or other interior items is constantly increasing. Therefore, you can choose a slatted bottom that has unique additions. The most popular designs are those that provide:
Thus, a slatted bottom is considered a fairly popular base for a bed. It has many positive parameters and has an orthopedic effect. Can be presented in different types and sizes. The latest models are equipped with additional functions that increase the comfort of use of the design, as well as simplify the adjustment process.
Skruvsta computer chair
Skrewst Chair
The Skruvsta chair is one of the oldest models of IKEA computer chairs. It has an attractive design and fits perfectly into a Scandinavian interior, but the quality of the chair's construction is unsatisfactory. Buyers complain that the chair takes up too much space, it is awkward and inactive, some note that it is inconvenient to work behind it. And frequent use leads to back pain. In addition, faux leather options wear out quickly, rendering the chair unusable.

Since it is known that a stingy person pays twice, but you don’t want to pay twice at all, and the issue of delivery and receipt of the order takes time and again costs money, I settled on Leirsund:
I would like to draw your attention to the importance of carefully viewing and following the assembly instructions. Since the bed is a double bed, I assembled two such bases, each 90 cm wide and 200 cm long. So, at a certain stage of assembly, the diagram indicates that the frame fastening screws are not fully tightened. I didn't notice this, and I had to put in extra effort and chafe my hands while installing each of the 42 slatted bottom ribs. And only after installing them did I discover that the next assembly steps involve tightening these screws. And only then did I realize my mistake, and I was able to assemble a second similar slatted bottom much faster and with less effort.
In the photo below we see what the slatted bottom looks like from the back side:
Pay attention to these levers; they are installed in the lumbar area and, in addition to the main rib, are equipped with an additional shortened rib. Its ends are not inserted into the frame, so by moving the levers to the center we do not use the second rib at all, and as the levers move to the edges of the bottom frame, the weight distribution on the second rib increases proportionally.
All that remains is to put on the mattress, mattress pad and make the bed linen.
I am glad that I settled on the LEIRSUND slatted bottom, since for two years I slept on an inexpensive Ikea sofa with a LURA slatted bottom, there were much fewer slats and the strength was not enough for my weight, several slats cracked.
I recommend the LEERSUND slatted bottom for purchase, while I slept for several days, but in my opinion the strength is more than enough, especially since the HAREID mattress itself is quite massive and the weight distribution through such a mattress on the ribs of the slatted base will be more uniform than on the above-mentioned sofa with a thinner and not a spring mattress.
If something goes wrong, I promise to update the review in a timely manner!
