Loft bed from Ikea - a great space-saving option

A convenient and practical solution for a small apartment - a loft bed.
We present to your attention an interesting, modern solution. The design of the bed consists of two tiers: the upper one contains a sleeping place, and the lower one remains free. Below you can place a work area, a personal space for relaxation, or install a second bed.

Furniture stores offer different models of beds of this type, and in this article we will talk in more detail about loft beds using the example of Ikea.

Model TUFFING

Metal loft bed Tuffing from Ikea with a ladder in the middle

This Ikea loft bed is made of steel. The dimensions are standard and will suit any room. A special feature of the model is that the stairs are placed in the middle, which makes it easier to go up and down. The sides are made of steel frame and 100% polyester.

SWERTA model

Swart bed with ladder, suitable for sleeping not only for children, but also for adults

Another metal loft bed. Here you can climb from the right or left edge, depending on where you want to secure the ladder. You can choose the color of the product - there is a white option. The sides are high bars; they will prevent the sleeping person from falling out of the bed. The height of the mattress should not exceed 10 cm. The model is higher than the previous one, so it is more suitable for teenagers and adults.

Dimensions

When choosing a two-tier structure, you definitely need to pay attention to its dimensions. If it is purchased for an adult or teenager, then its parameters must be at least 90x200 cm. It is worth considering that for a child who is still growing, it must be purchased taking into account an additional length of at least twenty centimeters.

If a bed is chosen for children, it is important to pay attention to the height of the product.

Taking into account the fact that not every room has high ceilings, and children, as you know, love to jump on the bed, the sleeping area may end up right under the ceiling, which can lead to head and spinal injuries. Therefore, when purchasing a product for a child, preference should be given to beds with a height of 160 to 180 cm.

It is important to note that the design in the nursery should not be bulky and “fall out” from the overall interior of the room.

Model STURO

Frame of a large wooden loft bed from Sturo, suitable for two adults

The Sturo loft bed is made of durable and environmentally friendly material – pine wood. The ladder can be installed both on the right and on the left. This model is an order of magnitude higher than others, so the ceiling height must be at least 270 cm. The permitted mattress height is 19 cm, but no more. When cleaning, it is worth remembering that wood is susceptible to swelling, so first wipe the bed with a damp cloth, and then remove the remaining moisture with a dry cloth.

Popular models and their costs

Midal – 11999 ₽

Bunk bed with two beds, made of solid pine. The wood is treated with an antiseptic, opened with transparent varnishes and is not painted. It has standard box dimensions and a small height (157 cm), which makes it the best option for children of primary school age, since the risk of injury is reduced when playing and possible falls. The upper tier is equipped with a high side.

The Midal bed meets all safety requirements thanks to its high side.

Note! The ladder can be attached to either side of the bed, which makes it possible to place it in any convenient place in the room, and not just against the wall.

Svirta – 13999 ₽

The model is made of stainless steel and coated with silver paint based on epoxy resins. It is assembled from hollow pipes, which ensures both high strength and lightness of the structure. Fastening is carried out with bolts; the use of a welding machine is not intended.

The height of the second tier is 157 cm, which makes the bed a suitable option for children from 5 to 16 years old. The staircase is adjacent to the structure and has flat steps. Can be installed on both the right and left sides. The second tier is equipped with high limiters with crossbar filling. The design is equipped with a slatted bottom.

The Swert model is convenient and ergonomic thanks to the variable installation of the ladder.

Note! To complement the steel model, fabric or plastic storage containers are best suited.

Vitval – 15999 ₽

This is an IKEA loft style metal bunk bed made from steel with epoxy and polyester powder coating. It has a textile side, divided into sections, which makes it easier to put on the frame. The structure is stable, but it must be attached to the wall. You can determine the location of the stairs yourself. It has a height of 195 cm, and therefore during assembly the minimum ceiling height should be 244 cm.

The Vitval bed has a fairly large height and is equipped with a textile side.

Note! Due to the height of the second tier, the bed is recommended for children over seven years old.

pros

Beautiful and functional loft bed built into a closet with a sofa underneath

In an apartment where there is very little free space, a loft bed is a real salvation - two zones are combined in one space. The lower “tier” can serve:

  • workplace - a special tabletop can be bought at Ikea, or any other table can be installed;

  • a relaxation corner - a soft sofa or chair, a bookcase and a lamp will help create a cozy island of peace and tranquility under the bed;

  • play area - if the loft bed is in the children's room, then the niche can be provided with light and put there, for example, a toy kitchen or just a box with toys;

  • wardrobe - below you can place cabinets, shelves and racks for storing clothes and other things;

Another advantage of the Ikea loft bed is its simplicity of design. The models will fit into any interior without difficulty, and they can always be diversified with decorative elements - painting, ribbons, garlands, stickers.

Children (7-14 years old)

A large selection of loft beds at IKEA specifically for children. And this is not surprising, because often a children's room is designed to accommodate several children. And sometimes its dimensions do not allow placing a bed and a student’s work area there at the same time.

For children, for schoolchildren up to adolescence, you can watch them in the “Stuva” series. Models in this series include:

  • frame (material – chipboard);
  • desk with cabinet with drawers (2, 3 or 4 drawers);
  • wardrobe and/or shelving.

The frame of this white model can be combined with cabinet and drawer fronts from other series of children's furniture - “Folya”, “Fritids”. But you can also buy it without fronts - with an open cabinet and shelving. See below for several options and prices.

Not all possible configuration options are listed above. You can buy it with a different number of shelves, drawers, with a wardrobe with doors, or just with a shelving unit. The cost will depend on this.

The staircase of this model is part of the structure: it cannot be rearranged, the only possible location is on the right.

The desk can be turned around by placing it perpendicular to the bed.

Minuses

A bed located in a place invisible to prying eyes under the ceiling in a small apartment

A loft bed is fashionable, interesting and very comfortable, but not safe. A very important disadvantage of such a bed is the risk of falling. It is highly not recommended to purchase such a bed:

  • those suffering from sleepwalking;
  • sleeping restlessly and tossing and turning a lot;
  • elderly people;
  • children under 6 years old.

To avoid annoying incidents, you must:

  • provide good lighting near the bed, which could be turned on both from below and from above;
  • follow recommendations for mattress and ceiling heights;
  • eliminate the possibility of getting tangled in wires, bedding and decorative elements, that is, free up staircase space.

If all safety requirements are met, then there is no need to worry - a couple of weeks and you will get used to using the loft bed.

Sides

Sides are always present on the upper tier; on the bottom, the side is installed at will. When assessing the height of the side, take into account the thickness of the mattress.

On IKEA models of 2 bunk beds, the height of the sides is from 20 cm, which fully complies with safety requirements. For each specific model, the IKEA catalog contains recommendations regarding the maximum height of the mattress.

How to choose a loft bed?

Beautiful and comfortable furniture for a small children's room

The Ikea store is unique in that the retail pavilions copy the layout and interior of the apartments, so a trip to Ikea will solve most problems when choosing a bed. You can climb to the “second floor”, touch and study all the details in the models, and then make your choice.

If you don’t have the opportunity to actually walk around Ikea, you can go on an online journey through the store’s catalog on the Internet.

Reliable and strong Ikea metal loft bed in the interior of the room

The most important thing in any of the options is to measure the room, especially the height of the ceiling in it. In order to correctly determine the size of the bed, study the dimensions of each model.

For a children's room, it is worth looking at the tuffing model. It is safer than the others: the sleeping place is low enough and you can watch the child. If necessary, you can lower the bed even lower, then making the bed will be more convenient.

Two models are optimal for teenagers and adults: Svirta and Sturo.

Svirta is an apartment option. The height between the bed and the floor is quite large - you can create a full-fledged workspace where an adult will be comfortable.

The Sturo model is more suitable for your own home - it is wide, tall and massive. Due to the wood, this bed is heavier and therefore more stable.

Types of bunk beds, taking into account:

Sizes

IKEA bunk beds are not divided into sizes, and all models have standard dimensions: 90 cm wide and 200 cm long. On the one hand, such versatility is convenient, as it allows you to use one design to accommodate both an adult and a child. On the other hand, for tall people comfort will be questionable, because for proper rest the sleeping place should be 20-30 cm longer than a person’s height.

Bedroom furniture has standard dimensions.

The narrowness of the models is also not very convenient, as this can negatively affect the quality of sleep. In the standard case, to determine the appropriate width, you need to lie on the mattress, fold your hands on your stomach and spread your elbows. The best option is considered to be a situation where there is 10-15 cm left from the elbows to the edge. If the distance is less, sleeping on an IKEA bed may be uncomfortable.

For some people the bed may be too narrow.

It is also worth keeping in mind that the beds are sold without mattresses, and therefore they will have to be purchased separately. In the case of IKEA, this can be done simultaneously with the purchase of the structure.

IKEA beds are sold without mattresses.

Important! Before choosing a mattress, you need to look at the instructions and clarify the maximum permissible thickness of the mattress, since this is a fundamental issue of sleep safety, especially on the second tier.

Mattresses are classified as follows:

  • spring;
  • springless;
  • orthopedic.

There are three types of mattresses.
Springless mattresses are filled exclusively with filler. Most often, polyurethane foam (foam rubber), batting or holofiber are used in its role. The latter is quite popular due to its hypoallergenic properties.

Note! When choosing a spring type of mattress, you should select a model with insulated springs that work independently, as they allow you to ensure the most comfortable placement.

To choose the right mattress, you need to lie on it. The product is suitable if only the shoulders and hips are buried in it

Functionality and design

The range of bunk beds is represented by the following types of designs:

Classical

The simplest option, consisting of two tiers, on which sleeping places are located exactly one below the other, and a built-in staircase.

Attic

In this type of design, there is a sleeping area at the top, and a working or simply free area at the bottom. The latter may include a built-in desk, shelving and shelving. The model is intended for one person, usually a child.

The loft bed has one sleeping area located at the top.

Three bedroom

Here, both tiers are represented by single beds, but under the lower bed there is a pull-out platform that creates a third bed.

Important! When choosing such a model, you should pay special attention to its strength, and also take into account the height of the ceiling, since the lower level should be quite high.

Manufacturing materials

The following materials are used to make beds:

Tree

An option that combines durability, reliability, aesthetics and pleasant tactile contact, as well as the ability to equip the structure with any storage space in a variety of variations. However, high-quality wood is quite expensive, which explains the cost of such models. Various breeds are used for production:

  1. oak, aesthetic, reliable and durable products from which have an unlimited service life, but are highly expensive;
  2. birch, which produces beautiful and high-quality products at a more affordable, but still noticeable price;
  3. ash, beech and alder, which have beautiful and noble shades and a lower cost;
  4. pine, which is the most popular material due to its combination of high quality and the most affordable cost.

Note! Wood for furniture undergoes processing, which includes cleaning from roughness, impregnation with an antiseptic agent and opening with transparent varnish, but when purchasing it is worth checking the uniformity of the material and the absence of cracks and burrs.

Metal

The most durable material that can last for several decades. Visually it looks neater and lighter than wood. It is difficult to damage, and therefore it retains its neat appearance for a long time. During production it is painted using powder coating with polyester resins.

A metal bed is the strongest and most durable.

The frame is strengthened with strong bolts, and therefore the base of the bed will not allow the mattress to sag even under significant load. However, metal is not very pleasant to the touch, and models made from it do not have built-in storage spaces.

Plastic

Used in the production of beds for small children. Models made from it are distinguished by a wide range of colors and a variety of shapes. The design is often associated with fairy-tale or cartoon images.
