This style has its roots in Victorian England, but with a more modern twist. Convex (carved) surfaces are widely used in furniture. The legs of the chair can be carved or uncarved, but must be curved.

All designs are strictly symmetrical with clearly defined lines. Various carved wood species and “noble” alloys such as bronze and brass are used as decorative elements. The upholstery is plain or with discreet floral patterns.

Vanguard

High tech

This style cultivates simplicity and functionality. The furniture is dominated by simple figures of regular shape. The materials used are a combination of glass, metal, plastic and wood. The upholstery of armchairs and sofas is mostly plain, in calm beige or gray colors.

Some designers use color accents on armchairs or sofa cushions.

Modern

The main canons of the Art Nouveau style are smooth curves and floral patterns in the decor. The main material is wood, and bronze, brass and natural stone are used for decoration.

Flora and fauna textures are also present in the upholstery textures. The materials used are natural fabrics and leather. The furniture itself can be either massive or elegant.

Scandinavian

Furniture, including chairs, made in the Scandinavian style, is functional, simple in form and convenient for use in everyday life. The color scheme is dominated by white, blue and shades of gray. Wood is used as a load-bearing material.

The cushions can be removed from the wooden base for cleaning. Some of them have removable lids. For upholstery fabrics choose wool, thin corduroy or scotchgard. Modern materials with high elasticity are used as filler: dense polyurethane foam, latex, etc.

Country

This is a country style that combines simplicity, functionality and originality. For the production of furniture, only natural materials are used: wood, wrought iron, natural upholstery (cotton, linen, leather).

The design of the chairs is simple, without complex geometric shapes. Wood carving is possible, but more often the surface imitates rough processing or is artificially aged.

Genuine Leather. Suitable for chairs in loft, country, hi-tech, African styles. It is easy to maintain and durable, has an attractive appearance, but has a high price.
Leatherette. Also known as leather substitute. Available in a wide selection of colors and textures. It wears out faster than leather, can crack, and may require re-upholstering over time.
Tapestry. Dense, durable material with interesting colors and patterns, which is used for massive furniture in a classic style. Another variety is chenille, which is distinguished by the way the threads are interwoven and excellent heat accumulation.
Flock. Lightweight, soft material, also known as "anti-claw". Suitable for apartments and houses with pets. It has high wear resistance and does not fade in the sun. Special impregnation creates a water-repellent effect.
Velours. Soft pile fabric, difficult to care for, but with a noble appearance. Can be natural or synthetic. The second option is more wear-resistant. The assortment is represented by a wide choice of colors.

As for the filler, the most affordable solution is foam rubber. But, at the same time, it is the most short-lived, quickly losing its elasticity and shape. The padding polyester is soft, retains its original shape for a long time, but can sometimes become confused. Polyurethane foam lasts for many years without losing its qualities, supports the back well, and has maximum softness.

Engineering does not stand still, and over the years many designs of existing chairs have been created and improved, as well as new ones developed.

Lift chair

The chair has a classic shape, but is additionally equipped with a servo drive that raises the seat. It is controlled using a remote control, usually wired. Some models have the additional function of lowering the backrest.

Hanging

As the name suggests, these chairs hang similar to hammocks, except their frame is rigid. There are different types of soft chairs:

Papasan (spring). The structure consists of a firmly fixed hollow base, inside of which a strong spring is installed. The seat, back and armrests form a single structure in the shape of a hemisphere. Rattan is traditionally used as a manufacturing material.

What to consider when choosing a chair?

When choosing an upholstered chair for the home, not only its design is taken into account, but also its technical characteristics, which directly depend on the individual characteristics of the person.

Presence of slope. A straight, rigid back can lead to back pain, since it is anatomically incorrect. A slight slope will help support the lower back and shoulder blades. The height of the slope depends on the characteristics of the person’s back.
Back height. Directly depends on height: the larger it is, the higher the back should be. If you do not plan to recline completely on the chair, the backrest can reach the level of the shoulder blades.
Seat width. It is calculated by measuring the half-circumference of the hips with the addition of at least 10 cm. If you want to sit with your legs, you will need to add at least 30 cm to this parameter.
Seat depth. To select, you need to lean your elbows on the back of the chair, and the seat should almost reach the bend of your knee.
Height. While sitting, your legs should have full support on the base to properly redistribute the load.
