The device of the future design
Our homemade stove will have several features:
- There is a cooking chamber on the front side. It will be possible to cook shish kebab or barbecue on the grill. If you install a special partition, this compartment turns into a chamber for cooking pies or baking vegetables and meat. The hostess can even make bread.
- There is a cutting table on the right, and the space below is used for storing kitchen utensils; on the left side there is a compartment for storing firewood.
- The stove is built into the back of the gazebo, so its back side is a section of the outer wall of the entire room.
- The combustion chamber door is a means for adjusting draft. The damper or view is not mounted on our furnace.
- We arrange the firebox on the left side, here it does not interfere with the preparation and cutting of meat or vegetables on the table.
Waterproofing is an important point
The space under the floor should absorb excess moisture well and not let it into the room. To do this, the ground inside the foundation contour is compacted and covered with a thick layer of sand. It is better to immediately lay roofing felt or thick film on the ground; they will not allow grass to grow through the floor.
Crushed stone is laid on the sand and insulating material is laid again. The same roofing felt or roofing felt is laid on top of the foundation (both the main one and a separate one - the stove). The brick should not have direct contact with the concrete, otherwise it will become damp.
Construction of a gazebo with a stove and barbecue made of brick
Foundation
Brick is a heavy building material, so to build a gazebo made of brick you will need a reliable foundation, presented in the form of a strip foundation. If the soil is dry and stable, then a columnar foundation, piles or a monolithic concrete slab can be used to build an open gazebo. We recommend using only a reliable strip foundation, for which you need to dig a trench, the depth of which reaches the sand layer.
In the optimal case, the height of the foundation should be half a meter, and the presence of a stove must be taken into account:
- Marking the area taking into account the dimensions of the gazebo (the area should be 0.2 meters longer and wider than the building itself).
- Remove the top layer of soil, remove weeds and treat with a chemical solution.
- Dig a trench.
- Create a “pillow” of crushed stone and sand.
- Make wooden formwork.
- Lay the reinforcement.
- At the place where the stove will be installed, you need to make a separate foundation, the depth of which is about 0.2 meters, of which 7 cm is a layer of sand and crushed stone, and a metal mesh is used to reinforce the formwork.
- Fill both foundations with concrete and allow to harden.
Waterproofing
The space under the floor should absorb moisture without allowing it to enter the gazebo. It is for this purpose that sand needs to be poured inside the foundation, but it is not enough. You can protect the space from moisture by laying a thick film or roofing material on the ground, which protects the gazebo from moisture and sprouting grass. Crushed stone is laid on top of the sand, which also needs to be covered with insulating material. The brick should not come into contact with the concrete, otherwise it will begin to become damp, so a layer of waterproofing must also be laid between the foundation and the brickwork.
Brickwork of walls and columns
As for bricklaying, it is done in the same way as in conventional construction. The only thing that needs to be taken into account for open-type construction is the presence of rainwater drainage, which is done using small gaps in the first row of masonry. When arranging the floor, you need to make a minimum slope towards the drain (opposite from the fireplace). The second row of bricks is laid solid, after which the subsequent rows are shifted by half a brick.
To equip the columns, you need metal supports (pipes), which are sunk into the foundation in advance and then lined with brick. You can also create a partial wall; the upper part is covered with metal forging, textiles or wooden gratings. On the side of the fireplace, you need to make a solid wall, eliminating the blowing of wind and precipitation.
Furnace laying
To create a furnace, fireproof and environmentally friendly bricks are laid on the foundation; in addition, all elements used for masonry must not emit toxic substances. Masonry mortar is a mixture of clay and sand, where their ratio depends on the fat content of the clay. Before starting construction procedures, the brick must be soaked in water, so that it will better adhere to the mortar.
The furnace design needs to be worked out separately, since any inaccuracy affects the quality of work. The design may have one or more fireboxes, a working and cutting surface, a sink and a cabinet for storing dishes. In the upper part, the structure should go into a pipe, the chimney is located above the roof level, and it is covered on top with a metal “umbrella” that protects the space from precipitation. The next step is to install the necessary communications and finish the surface of the fireplace with ceramics or plaster.
Roof and roofing works
The final stage is the installation of the roof; it is best to give preference to a single-pitch or gable structure. As for the choice of roofing materials, there are no restrictions here, and the only caveat is the need for a hole for the chimney, which must be carefully insulated with galvanized iron. The best roofing materials are metal, flexible and ceramic tiles. You can make a gazebo winter by glazing the windows and insulating the walls, floor and ceiling. As for the flooring, it can remain concrete, made of brick or paving slabs.
Peculiarities
A luxurious brick oven with a barbecue area, hob, and other attributes is a complex device that is not easy to build without experience in the construction industry. The main feature of a brick stove is the mandatory presence of a concrete foundation. If the gazebo is made in a lightweight version and has a plank floor, you should make do with a portable barbecue. If you decide to build a stone stove, it is worth understanding the design features in more detail.
Safety
Do not allow parts of the stove to come into contact with objects that can easily ignite. It is necessary to use special screens as protection
This feature is worth paying attention to if the stove is located in a wooden gazebo
Moisture and frost resistance
The stove in the gazebo is used in the warm season, but the structure will be located in the yard permanently. Therefore, construction materials should not absorb moisture. The accumulated liquid, freezing, will tear the brick, which can cause cracks to appear, and the stove itself will begin to collapse.
Heating temperature
Even if the inside is very hot, the outside of the device should not become hot. Hot surfaces can cause burns if accidentally touched. This can be eliminated by special surface finishing. Tile and stone are suitable as non-combustible cladding.
Environmental friendliness
The material chosen for an outdoor stationary stove should not contain harmful components that, when heated, will spread, harming the health of those who will be in the gazebo.
Classification
All versions of barbecues and outdoor ovens will be conventionally referred to as garden barbecues. There are a huge number of projects that can be roughly divided by location, size and configuration.
Placement
Barbecue stoves are placed in an open area. In this case, they are called street (garden).
Or they are located in specially constructed premises. Most often, these are gazebos, verandas, open or closed terraces. In the latter case, it is possible to insulate the room, which will ensure its comfortable use at any time of the year.

Dimensions and configuration
It is difficult to list all existing options in one article. We will name only those that are used more often than others. Similar designs include:
- barbecues of simple designs;
- with equipped smokehouse;
- hob;
- cauldron;
- grill;
- barbecue oven;
- designs with a countertop and sink;
- barbecues combined with a fireplace;
- complex multifunctional barbecue complex;
- versions designed for laying in the corner of a room.
Types of barbecue ovens
When choosing any of these options, you should carefully consider all the issues related to the decision to build it. Decide on your financial capabilities. Decide who exactly will carry out the masonry and carry out related work on a turnkey basis, you personally or a professional stove maker. How often and in what composition do you plan to use the grill. All this will allow you to make the optimal choice of the desired project, which you will not regret in the future.

Choosing a suitable location on the site to install the stove
To determine the installation location, it is recommended to consider the following points:
- The structure should be located near the recreation area (gazebo, veranda, summer kitchen).
- The terrain should be smooth, without sudden changes.
- Convenient approach to the grill. If possible, one or more paths are developed.
- Communications supply. If, according to the plan, the product will be equipped with a sink, then the proximity of water pipes and sewerage will be taken into account. In winter, the access to water in garden barbecues is blocked so that the pipes crack in the cold.
- Direction of the wind. Smoke should not be directed towards the recreation area. You need to build it so that the smoke goes to another part of the yard.
- Presence of a canopy. Let’s assume the option of combining outdoor stoves with a table and chairs standing next to them.
Compliance with fire safety requirements requires that the device be located at a sufficient distance from green spaces, dry trees, and flammable outbuildings.
Approximate costs
When deciding to build a brick barbecue on a site, you should evaluate the upcoming construction costs. If you plan to carry out the work yourself, then the expenses will only be on the purchase and delivery of materials. If you decide to entrust the process to a master, you will also have to pay for the work.
In any case, a functional brick grill is a very expensive pleasure. This explains the choice of portable metal versions by the majority of summer residents and owners of private houses.
If you need “beautiful and rich”. Then let's count.

Purchase
They make up a significant part of the final price of erecting a garden barbecue. Please note that prices are approximate at the time of writing and will most likely be higher at the time of your purchase.
So, in order:
Sand
added to cement and clay when pouring the foundation and preparing masonry mortar. Price per cubic meter – (300-500) rub.
Clinker brick
The base material for the construction of the main frame. (50-100) rub/piece.
Cement
Necessary for arranging the foundation for a brick barbecue. The quality will suit M400 and higher. The price range for a bag (50 kg) is 250-300 rubles.
Fire-clay
On its basis, a solution is created for laying the brickwork of the firebox (ideally, the entire structure). The total cost of the entire required volume can be calculated based on the price of a bag (25 kg) - 300 rubles.
Brick, gravel, crushed stone
To increase the strength characteristics of the foundation.
Reinforcing mesh (rebar)
To strengthen the foundation structure. The required quantity is calculated taking into account the length, diameter, required number of rods, wire thickness, and mesh cell size.
Fire brick
Purchased for laying the inside of the firebox.
Reinforcing mesh (rebar)
To strengthen the foundation structure. The required quantity is calculated taking into account the length, diameter, required number of rods, wire thickness, and mesh cell size.
Refractory brick solves the problem of protecting the main structure from the negative effects of high temperatures and open flames. The estimated cost for one is: fireclay - 25 rubles, fireproof of other brands (alumina, basic, quartz, carbon) - up to 50 rubles.
For a foundation up to 2 meters, the optimal choice is a rod up to 6 mm thick, a mesh with a cell side of 100*100. 1 m2 of such a mesh costs 170-200 rubles. For more powerful foundations, a cell of 150*150 (190-250 rubles/m2), a rod with a thickness of 8 mm or more, is selected. The grid is implemented in cards (sheets) 2000*6000. Therefore, the minimum quantity for its purchase will be 12 square meters.
Delivery
If you do not have your own transport, the best solution is to use a cargo taxi (rent a car with a full-time driver). A tented GAZelle for 1500 kg is estimated at 400 rubles/hour. More heavy-duty vehicles, 700-1200 rubles/hour. Intercity delivery is calculated by kilometers for the GAZelle mentioned above, 10 rubles/km or more. For a three-ton truck, from 16 rubles/km.
Accessories
- skewers – (50-200) rub/piece;
- grill grate – (300-1500) rub/piece;
- cauldron – (1500-3000);
- poker – (150-300);
- firewood – (1500-2500) rub/m3.
How much time will it take
It will consist of the time spent on specific operations and technological breaks that will need to be performed between their individual stages.
Example
Depending on the complexity and size of the foundation being built, its arrangement will take 3-10 working days. Then you will need to take a break until the chemical hardening of the concrete is completed (at least 14 days).
Laying the barbecue oven itself, depending on the complexity of the solution you choose and qualifications, takes 5-20 working days. As a result, the total construction time will be 22-44 days.
Cost of work stages
If your outdoor stove is installed by a professional stove maker, the operations he performs will have to be paid according to the price list of the specific craftsman (contractor company). It is impossible to indicate the spread here, even approximately. You should check out the offerings in your area.
To build a simple small barbecue, it is better to involve one specialist in the work. This optimizes the timing/quality/cost ratio.
As a rule, professional stove makers estimate the work based on the cost of laying 1 brick. In the provinces, from 30 rubles. In large cities – many times higher (Moscow – from 100). Increased coefficients are provided for the complexity of the project being executed.
Knowing all these figures, you can roughly estimate how much it will cost you to install a garden stove on your property. Yes, don’t forget to add the price of foundation work. It starts from 2500 rub/m3 (all inclusive).
Insulating the gazebo in winter
A summer gazebo with a barbecue is an excellent solution for the warm season. But in order to use it all year round, it is recommended to insulate the structure.
This is what your insulated gazebo might look like from the inside.
Inside view of an insulated gazebo
And like this, outside
Outside view of an insulated gazebo
To do this you should:
- install a door, glaze all open wall openings;
- arrange a chimney for the stove;
- insulate the roof and walls (PPU insulation or mineral wool are perfect for this);
- carry out interior finishing work;
- decorate the facade (exterior decoration).
Be sure to comply with all fire safety requirements. It is recommended to provide electric lighting in it, since daylight hours in winter are quite short.
Base
Due to the large weight of the brick structure of the gazebo, you will have to take care of a high-quality foundation. For such a gazebo it can be slab or strip. It is better to use the second option, because the first will require more material for construction. In addition, if it is exposed to uneven pressure from the gazebo, then it may simply burst. The territory is marked at the selected location. On the first pass, you can roughly mark the boundaries. After this, the turf layer is removed.
When the area for the gazebo has acquired more specific outlines, you can move on to precise markings. To do this, a wooden peg is driven into each corner. A rope is stretched between them and the diagonals are checked to ensure that each angle is accurate. If an octagonal gazebo is selected, then the marking will be somewhat more complicated. The first step is to draw a circle. Its diameter will be equal to the width of the gazebo. A circle can be drawn using two pieces of reinforcement, between which a rope will be loosely stretched. After this, inside the circle you need to place two ropes perpendicular to each other. From the formed points it is necessary to set additional points at the same distance to form an octagon.
Next, a trench 50 cm deep is dug. Its width should be 15 more than the wall of the future structure, if it is present. The walls of the trench under the gazebo are leveled, and sand is added to the bottom. It compacts and levels well. After this, the formwork for the foundation under the gazebo is installed. The foundation should rise slightly above the ground level. A metal sheathing is laid inside the formwork and concrete mortar is poured. It is well compacted using a vibrator or a piece of reinforcement. The foundation will gain strength over several weeks.
Where to begin?
As you know, any construction begins with the selection of a project and its approval. You can come up with a drawing of a future brick gazebo and create it yourself, use ready-made sketches from the Internet, or order an individual project from a construction company. In addition, the prepared project must be legalized by contacting the relevant local authority. If you ignore this point, the construction will be illegal, which means it will be impossible to sell the plot; moreover, the homeowner will be fined, and the building will have to be demolished.
When planning independently, it is important to take into account the type of fireplace and its location. For example, here you can install a small portable grill, a stationary barbecue, or a full-fledged oven made of refractory bricks.
How to choose?
The choice of material for building a stove today is quite wide. In the modern building raw materials market, leading brands offer an extensive range.
Several types of bricks can be used.
- Heat resistant. This brick is red in color and has no holes.
- Ceramic (made of clay). Retains high temperatures, efficiently accumulates heat. Visually, this type of clay brick is difficult to distinguish from other options that do not have heat-resistant characteristics.
- Fireclay brick. It has fire-resistant qualities, but it is more often used as cladding or for decorative inserts.
Construction projects typically involve the use of materials in an integrated manner. But you can use one type of material for the entire structure. The choice of materials for constructing an outdoor stove determines its functionality.
A barbecue-type device can be built in the form of an oven. The operating mode of the device will remain similar to the barbecue. At the first stage of use, the device is well heated. Then you can place the meat on skewers in the firebox. Due to uniform heating, the kebabs will not need to be constantly rotated, and there will also be no need to monitor the cooking process. The leader in the choice of design is the barbecue; it is built according to the prototype of mobile braziers. What distinguishes a stove from a kebab maker is a stationary grate on which you can cook meat.
The stationary design requires mandatory flame protection from precipitation and wind. The covered device promotes long-term heat retention. Outdoor barbecues are made of metal. The body of a stationary stove can be made of brick with high fire-resistant characteristics. Gazebos often house stationary complexes that include stove equipment, sewer systems, sinks, furniture, tables (everything that can be useful for cooking outside).
