How to choose an orthopedic mattress for a double bed

Choosing a mattress that will be used by two people at the same time is not an easy task, as it sometimes involves taking into account mutually exclusive requirements. Partners may differ in weight, body type, or have different spinal characteristics that do not allow them to settle on the classic spring or springless version. In this article we will look at the various technologies used in the manufacture of mattresses, which will allow you to make the right choice in favor of convenience and a comfortable sleep.

How to choose an orthopedic mattress for a double bed

No. 1. Mattress size

The simplest thing is to choose the appropriate size. It is enough to measure the inner perimeter of the bed by removing the old mattress:

  • mattress length, like beds, should be 10-15 cm higher than the height of the tallest sleeper. The standard length of modern mattresses is 190-200 cm, but sometimes more massive products are found;

  • The width of the mattress , naturally, should correspond to the width of the bed, but take into account that the width of the sleeping area should be twice the width of the sleeper's shoulders. The standard width of single mattresses is 80-90 cm, one-and-a-half mattresses are 120-140 cm, double mattresses are 160-200 cm. Mattresses with a width of 200 cm are often called King Size;
  • The thickness of the mattress depends greatly on the presence of springs and the type of filling. The average for springless products is 15-18 cm, for mattresses with springs - 18-24 cm. This value should be taken into account when calculating the final height of the bed - it should be easy to lie down on the bed and just as easy to get up;
  • The maximum load on the mattress is indicated in the documentation accompanying the product. Typically, the manufacturer reports the load per bed;
  • if the measurements of the sleeping place show a non-round result, for example, 159 cm, then you can round and take a mattress with a width of 160 cm. If the deviation from the standard is 2 cm or more, then the mattress will not fit in the space allocated for it or will dangle in it. This is inconvenient, so you will have to make a custom-made mattress. Many domestic factories are happy to provide such services class=”aligncenter” width=”640″ height=”434″[/img]
  • for newborns they produce special mattresses 100-120 cm long and no more than 60 cm wide. The design of such products provides reliable support for the child’s spine;
  • For young children, you can take a mattress of standard sizes, but when choosing, you should pay attention to special models that are maximally adapted to the child’s body. For teenagers , a mattress that is as firm as possible is best.

The least problems arise when the bed and mattress are of the same brand, and even purchased at the same time.

Factors to consider

When buying a new mattress, you should pay attention to a number of physical parameters of a person.

  1. Age. This parameter is one of the determining factors in the choice. Everyone knows that the first 25 years of life the human body is in a growth phase. During this period of life, the body needs fairly solid support for proper formation. The best option for this age group would be a hard or medium-hard mattress. The next quarter of a century passes for the body in a relatively calm mode. Therefore, if you do not have back problems, you can choose a mattress based on your preferences. Having crossed the 50-year mark, the body needs special comfort and support. When choosing a mattress at this age, special attention should be paid to models with a high degree of anatomy.
  2. User weight. A person’s weight has no less influence on the choice of mattress. A person weighing up to 90 kg can choose a mattress at their discretion. People in the 90+ category should give preference to models with increased rigidity.
  3. Features of lifestyle. A person’s lifestyle also influences the choice of sleeping place. Athletes and people who experience daily physical activity should choose a hard mattress. For people with little physical activity, the anatomical indicator can be minimized.
  4. Health complaints. It is also worth considering the person’s physical condition. If the user experiences back or cervical pain, a firm mattress is preferable.

No. 2. Mattress design: spring or springless

The key characteristic of any mattress is the presence or absence of a spring block. Looking ahead, we note that both options can be used for permanent rest.

Spring mattresses

Mattresses with a spring block are divided into two types:

  • with a dependent spring block (Bonnel mattresses);
  • with independent spring block.

Mattresses with a dependent spring block have been produced for more than 60 years. Their peculiarity is that all the springs are interconnected. Springs are made from cold-drawn steel wire and can be shaped like a cone or a cylinder. Their main advantages include low price and high strength. disadvantages . Since all the springs are connected, pressure on some of them causes an instant “response” in others. This effect is especially noticeable in double mattresses, when the difference in the weight of the sleepers is more or less significant: one spouse will certainly roll towards the middle of the bed. A similar effect will be inevitable even for a single mattress. It turns out that the human spine will adapt to the bends of the mattress, and not vice versa.

In addition, Bonnell-type mattresses are pressed down in the middle part over time, and as a result, instead of a comfortable sleeping place, a hammock is formed. If you want to choose an orthopedic mattress for healthy sleep, then a model with a dependent spring block is clearly not suitable. This is an option for rare use, for example, for a country house.

An independent spring unit means that the individual springs are not only not connected to each other, but are also contained in their own fabric cover. Insulated springs perfectly adapt to the sleeping person, and the presence of a cover means there are no squeaks. When one of the sleepers gets up or turns over, the springs of the mattress under the other sleeper will remain motionless. No one will slide anywhere, nothing will sag over time.

This design allows you to provide excellent support to the spine and take its shape.
The durability of such mattresses is excellent, as is the price. Orthopedic mattresses are mainly equipped with an independent spring block.
Depending on the number of springs, the following types of mattresses are distinguished:

  • S-500 assumes the presence of 220-300 springs per 1 sq.m. Spring diameter 5-6 cm;
  • S-1000 already has about 500 springs with a diameter of 4 cm;
  • S-2000 has 1000 springs per square meter, diameter 2 cm.

The more springs and the smaller their diameter, the better the mattress will adapt to the body of the sleeper. If you need to choose a good orthopedic mattress, then it is better to take S-1000 or S-2000.

Dual Spring mattresses on sale . One spring is located inside the other, which provides optimal support for people with different weights - a good option for a couple in which the weights of the partners differ greatly. For people with excess body weight, mattresses with a reinforced block : the springs in them are made of thicker wire and arranged in a checkerboard pattern. There are mattresses that use springs with different degrees of stiffness in different areas. Due to this, maximum ergonomics is achieved, because the pressure exerted by the head and pelvis is different.

Springless mattresses

Such products consist of one or more layers of natural or artificial materials, the rigidity of which can vary greatly. The simplest and cheapest option is a foam springless mattress. At first it will be comfortable, but very soon it will begin to sag. foam rubber is mixed with additives of other materials, for example, coconut linen or latex, perform better Mattresses made from latex foam rubber are highly elastic and have a long service life, but the most durable mattresses will be those made entirely of natural latex or coconut fiber . These are elastic, elastic and hypoallergenic products. Depending on the combination of certain materials, the required level of rigidity is achieved.

A high-quality springless mattress will not be cheap, but in terms of performance it is almost no different from a product with an independent spring block. Since there are no springs in it, no one will roll down anywhere, and the problem of squeaking will be, in principle, impossible. This is an ideal option for children's rooms. Let's also add ease of transportation, since the springless product can be twisted. True, such a mattress requires an orthopedic lattice made of flexible slats - most modern beds have such a base.

What you need to know about double memory foam mattresses

This is the best offer on the market. Memory foam mattresses are made using springless or combined technology (the spring block is covered with a thick layer of memory foam). Such products are comfortable, can be orthopedic (combined models) and are sold only in specialized clinics, or simply provide an orthopedic effect.

Double memory foam mattresses are an ideal solution for couples where one partner weighs much more than the other. They provide comfortable sleep and eliminate the hammock effect, when a lighter person rolls into a hole under the side of a heavier person while resting.

When choosing such a mattress, pay attention to whether the store provides a service in the form of a test period. In this case, if the product suddenly does not fit, and this is quite likely, it can be returned - your money will be returned or they will offer you another model in exchange for the returned one.

No. 3. Mattress fillers

The filler, which is located above and below the spring block, is responsible for the rigidity and elasticity of the mattress. that “breathe”, withstand higher loads and have increased wear resistance perform best Such mattresses are more expensive than those filled with artificial fibers, but people weighing more than 100 kg are better off opting for natural filling.

The most popular natural fillers:

  • latex, obtained from the sap of the rubber tree, is an elastic and elastic material that is highly breathable and provides good support for the spine. Latex is used when it is necessary to give the mattress the proper level of softness;

  • coconut coir - a filler made from coconut fibers. Unlike latex, it is very hard, and the properties of the mattress depend on the thickness of the layer of this material. For example, with a thickness of 1 cm we get a product of medium hardness, and with a thickness of 3 cm we get a very hard product. The material does not absorb odors and moisture, is hypoallergenic, and has excellent air permeability;

  • horsehair. This filler is obtained by cleaning and pressing the hair of horses of special breeds. This is a hard, elastic and wear-resistant material, but in terms of rigidity it is still inferior to coir. Used mainly in luxury types of mattresses;

  • sisal It is rarely used for filling, provides high wear resistance, strength and has the ability to easily evaporate absorbed moisture.

most commonly used artificial fillers are

, felt, wool, strutofiber and some other natural and synthetic materials are used to fill the mattress

No. 4. Mattress upholstery

After all the “insides” of the mattress are well studied, it’s time to pay attention to what the upholstery of the product is made of. The cover must be made of durable fabric, be strong, wear-resistant and breathable. Usually the upholstery is made from cotton and linen , there are covers made from artificial fabrics (polyester is a popular option), but the best option would be mixed fiber. For example, jacquard , which consists of cotton and polyester threads.

Some manufacturers additionally use special impregnations that protect the product from insects and fire. The pattern of the fabric can be anything, it doesn’t play a big role.

The cover can be removable or non-removable . Non-removable ensures the tightest fit to the mattress and will be the best choice. To pair with such a mattress, it is better to take a mattress cover , which will take the entire blow: it is easy to remove and wash. Some mattress covers, by the way, have a small layer of filler and can adjust the hardness of the mattress. removable covers at home are almost impossible to remove and wash.

No. 5. Mattress hardness

The firmness of the mattress should be such as to support the sleeper's spine in the correct position . People of different ages and sizes require different levels of rigidity. To greatly simplify it, we can say that the greater the weight, the more rigid the product should be. When choosing a mattress for your bed, consider the following rules:

  • soft mattresses Suitable for people with low weight, the elderly, as well as for people with diseases of the lumbar spine. Latex, holofiber, orthopedic foam are used as filler in such mattresses, and the more layers of filler there are above the spring block, the softer the mattress will be;

  • Medium-hard mattresses are suitable for people of average build and can be used in children's and adult bedrooms. These are universal products that consist of a combination of fillers of varying degrees of hardness;
  • Hard mattresses are suitable for people with greater weight. Often such products are equipped with a reinforced spring block so that the mattress can withstand the most severe loads.

You also need to take your own preferences into account. But what to do when you need to choose a double orthopedic mattress, and spouses have completely different requirements for its rigidity. There are several solutions to this problem:

  • mattresses of varying degrees of hardness , in which the characteristics of the spring block and filler in different halves can differ radically;
  • Dual Spring mattress . The design involves the presence of double springs with different diameters. If a person with a light or medium weight is resting on the mattress, an external spring with a large diameter works, and for more serious loads, the internal spring also comes into play;
  • the most drastic decision is to take two single mattresses with clearly defined characteristics and combine them under one mattress cover.

Doctors' recommendations: which mattress to choose for a double bed

Osteopathic doctors give the following recommendations:

  • Hard mattresses are suitable for those who have problems with the spine - intervertebral hernias, protrusions. They are also recommended for patients with osteochondrosis.
  • Soft springless mattresses made of polyurethane foam or latex are the choice of people of light weight.
  • Medium-hard springless mattresses made of struttofiber, latex or a combined filler of latex and coconut coir are recommended for people of average build. Spring models of similar stiffness are also suitable for them.
  • Of the fillers, if this is a springless option, give preference to memory foam (Memorix), but only if you sleep peacefully. For those who often toss and turn, it is recommended to prefer a rigid base, regardless of the filler.
  • Choose a spring mattress if you sleep alone with a partner (for double beds) and a springless mattress if you sleep alone.
  • Winter/summer mattresses are the ideal choice. In warm weather, sleeping on material that warms is uncomfortable, and patients with spinal problems will feel increased pain.

The firmness of the same mattress varies between two different people - this should always be kept in mind when seeking advice from an expert. A plump person will find a medium-soft surface too soft, while a thin person, on the contrary, will find it too hard. If you are healthy, when choosing, always focus on your weight and sensations ; if you lie uncomfortable on any model, this is a reason to go to a medical facility and have your spine checked.

If you want to save money, buy two mattresses of different firmness. You can connect them together with a double mattress pad of a suitable size.

No. 6. Single-sided and double-sided mattresses

Most products on the market are single-sided, but some manufacturers also offer double-sided mattresses. The sides differ in the type of coating, due to which the mattress will be comfortable to use in any season. A common option: the “winter” side has a wool layer and a softer filler, while the “summer” side is covered with hygroscopic fabric and promotes more intense air exchange.

How to know when it's time to buy a new mattress

Accessories for healthy sleep have a limited service life - 8-12 years. Only high-quality double-sided models with proper use can last longer.

You can determine whether it’s worth buying a new bedding or getting by with the old one based on the following criteria:

  • formation of dents;
  • litter knocked into clumps;
  • protruding springs;
  • pain in muscles, body;
  • creaking springs;
  • allergic reaction.

A high-quality mattress does not cause negative sensations, but an old, sagging one causes restless sleep. Uncomfortable body position provokes attacks of intercostal neuralgia.

No. 7. Orthopedic mattresses

People suffering from diseases of the spine, joints and ligaments are better off choosing an orthopedic mattress. Its design allows for maximum support for the musculoskeletal system, follows the contours of the body, and prevents numbness in the limbs. For healthy people, such a mattress will be an effective prevention of various types of back-related diseases. Orthopedic mattresses, as a rule, are equipped with an independent spring block and filler that remembers the shape of the body.

Which mattress is better to buy: advice for buyers

When choosing a mattress, we are guided by our preferences. The right choice is to match the model to the size of the bed. The double option should provide comfort to both partners.

The second factor influencing the quality of sleep is a good filler. It should be practical, natural and hypoallergenic if possible. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the age and physiological characteristics of the consumer. The price of the product will depend on the quality and design of the product.

Does sleeping position affect the choice of mattress?

All people rest differently: some people fall asleep and wake up in the same position. Others, on the contrary, toss and turn from side to side all night. Despite this, most people like to fall asleep in one position.

Experts believe that for smooth sleep and good rest, those who like to sleep in different positions can be provided with comfort:

  • On the side - a semi-rigid structure is required that takes the shape of the body in the hips and shoulders. This will help relax the muscles and relieve stress from the spine. The correct position of the torso is fixed using a high pillow.
  • On the back - you need to purchase a model that provides ideal support in the lumbar area. In this position, in the complete absence of muscle tension, the spine will maintain an anatomically correct bend. For fixation, you need a medium-sized pillow.
  • On the stomach - it is important to ensure uniform support for the entire body. In this position, the cervical vertebrae experience significant stress. An incorrectly selected product will only make the situation worse. To provide your head with optimal support without your neck bending backward, you need to use a low pillow.

Which is more profitable to buy: online or offline?

It's difficult to choose bedding items online. Even when the website team is doing their best, the customer is drawn to come to the store. He certainly wants to see the desired object, evaluate it with his eyes and touch it from all sides.

When choosing between online and offline purchases, it is advisable to find an option where you can first look at the model in a real store. If necessary, you can pause to think about the decision. And if it is positive, place an order online.

On the one hand, the assortment on the site can be much more diverse. It shows samples that are in stock and those that can be purchased for individual order. On the other hand, purchasing quality products is an expensive undertaking. Therefore, the opportunity to familiarize yourself with your future acquisition with your own eyes is an excellent option.

Where is the best place to buy a mattress?

In our society, people have different purchasing power. Therefore, there cannot be unambiguous advice for everyone. Some people choose specialized stores and keep an eye out for discounts. And someone can afford to make an individual order, although it will cost about 15-20% more than usual.

In most regular stores, you can sit or lie on it while inspecting the bedding. In addition, special stands have visual examples of all types of fillers.

For convenience, a home delivery service is provided. Depending on the total purchase amount, this service can be either paid or free.

Important! In online stores, the choice can be much more tempting in terms of range and price. But if you come across a defective item, most likely there will be difficulties in replacing or returning the product. It is better to take this circumstance into account in advance.

What to pay attention to if you want to save money

To save on your purchase, you need to consider several factors. Each of them separately or all together can influence your choice:

  • Shelf life - for high-quality products with a long service life, the price is much higher. Purchasing an expensive item will save you from repeated purchases of goods of the same name, but at a low price.
  • Design - a spring model with one type of filler is cheaper than a combined product. The expensive version can combine different materials, high-quality padding and stiffeners. It's up to you to pay for this splendor or neglect it.
  • Vents - These vents are designed to circulate air. But in some models there is no need for them. If the model is made of a material with good breathability, there is no point in paying for a clever marketing trick. In addition, not only air, but also dust penetrates into these holes.
  • Covering material - there is no particular need to purchase a model covered with expensive fabric. First, the cost of upholstery does not have a positive impact on health or comfort. Secondly, no one sleeps on bare mattresses - nothing will be visible under a layer of bedding anyway.

Another tempting offer from manufacturers is a micromassage effect, healing and aromatic impregnations. Such additions to a household item are nothing more than an advertising gimmick.

It is difficult to evaluate the effect of micromassage by eye or verify the healing properties of any impregnation. As for scented additives, the best scent for bedding is the smell of cleanliness. In addition, there are no allergies from it.

Which mattress to buy for a child

Which mattress to buy for a child?
A child’s spine needs support in the first months of life. According to the recommendation of pediatricians, babies should be put to sleep on hard, springless mattresses. In this case, the size of the bedding must correspond to the standard of a crib - 60x120 cm or 65x125 cm.

Today it is possible to purchase a model even for a fashionable oval-shaped crib. In addition, manufacturers offer double-sided products in which each plane has a different rigidity. This option provides for the rapid growth and development of the child. For the first year, the baby will sleep on the hardest side, and in the subsequent period - on the softer side.

A person spends up to a third of his life sleeping, and children sleep almost constantly in the first years. This is exactly the time when the body rests from daily stress and restores strength. While you sleep, not only your muscles relax - your brain also “reboots”, sorting out the information received during the day, because it’s not for nothing that the saying says: “The morning is wiser than the evening.”

Scientists say that sleep is even more important than food, because without food you can live for two weeks, but without sleep a person cannot last even ten days. An uncomfortable sleeping place will not allow you to fully relax; in the morning you will be left with a feeling of fatigue, which will gradually accumulate and will soon manifest itself not only as a depressed mood, decreased performance and inability to concentrate on everyday tasks, but also problems with the musculoskeletal system. That is why it is so important that the sleeping place is comfortable, as comfortable as possible for sleeping, and the main element in this is the right mattress.

General recommendations for selection

How to choose a mattress for a double bed, choose an option for a schoolchild or prepare a sleeping place for guests - there cannot be a clear solution in all these situations. However, there are rules that help you make the right choice, regardless of for what purpose and what product is purchased:

  • Mandatory testing. If you have the opportunity to lie on a mattress before purchasing, you should never miss it. Today, sales consultants in retail stores willingly provide this opportunity.
  • Reading reviews. Feedback from those who have already purchased the model you like will help you learn more about its composition and properties. Real user opinions will help you strengthen your decision to purchase a mattress or abandon the model in favor of another.
  • Studying documentation. It makes the most sense to buy mattresses from official stores, both retail and online. In this case, sellers will be sure to provide all the necessary documents and certificates, which provide detailed information about the product.
  • Choose trusted brands. Products from well-known and large manufacturers have proven themselves, have a strong reputation and many reviews. In addition, it is in this case that there is a chance to quickly resolve the issue when purchasing a defective product. Purchasing a budget mattress from an unknown company is akin to a lottery: you may be lucky and it will turn out to be of high quality, but the risk of wasting money is much higher.

Choosing a mattress can take a lot of time, but you shouldn't regret it. The more careful the approach to purchase, the more factors taken into account when choosing, the higher the chances that the purchased model will be suitable in all respects and will serve for many years at the proper level.

A few words about the orthopedic base

In order for the mattress to have the maximum preventive or therapeutic effect, it is necessary to use it with a special orthopedic base. The best option is a frame with elastic slats made of beech or birch. This design provides not only good shock absorption, reducing the load on the musculoskeletal system, but also proper air and moisture exchange. A single base must have at least 15 slats, a double – 30. The frame itself can be with or without legs, made in the form of a metal base or a wooden box. An orthopedic base is used with both types of mattresses - springless and spring.

Types of orthopedic bases:

  • Collapsible design
    . Convenient model for transportation, for example, to the country. The slats, frame and lath holders are easily assembled into a single structure in accordance with the instructions.
  • Solid base
    . It is purchased assembled and cannot be disassembled. This is the best option for constant use at home.
  • Frameless base
    . A mobile design in which the slats are not attached to the frame, but are connected with tape and placed in the bed niche.
  • Transformers
    . Due to the special design of the base, it can be adjusted to the shape of the body; for example, when watching TV, part of the frame at the head can be raised.
  • Lifting frames
    . Equipped with a mechanism that lifts the entire orthopedic base and gives access to the niches under the berth.
