For those who love to spend time in bed in the morning, nothing makes life easier than a portable breakfast table. Breakfast in bed tables have been around for centuries, and they are still useful today. Now breakfast tables can also be used for TV remote control, as well as for placing your laptop. Most often, they are used for a convenient breakfast or delicate tea drinking in bed. Breakfast tables have different shapes, sizes, features and colors. To find a comfortable table that suits all your needs, read below.
Use the table for more than just breakfast
Bed tables have become incredibly popular, now you can buy them at any Ikea, but even such a common little thing has many uses beyond its original purpose.
- Work with documentation
- Use the table as a stand for papers or textbooks
- Assemble the puzzle right on the tabletop
- Store small parts or tools on a surface
- Girls will see in such tables a stand for jewelry and even a convenient space for creating complex manicures.
- Parents will be able to use the newly purchased piece of furniture as an excellent portable space for games, hobbies and child development. The low table is so multifunctional that it is comfortable for even the smallest children who still prefer to sit on the floor or their parent’s bed.
And most importantly, such an accessory fits perfectly into any interior and complements it.
How to do it yourself?
How about making the table yourself? This activity will be much more profitable than purchasing a new one, and using a table that you made yourself will be much more pleasant. Making it seems like a daunting task, but it's much easier than you think. For maximum convenience, find the nearest woodworking workshop and make all the preparations there - probably one of them is located near your house (or not far from the nearest market).
You can do it yourself
This table is made from one plank measuring 2.5 meters and 20 cm wide from black walnut wood:
List of materials:
- 1 board 2.5m 8x8 cm;
- 4 Eurobolts 21” (long);
- 4 connecting caps 13 “(short);
- 1.1/4” pocket hole screws (for legs);
- wood glue.
Tool:
- roulette;
- drill;
- table saw;
- jigsaw;
- protective glasses;
- ear protection;
- glue.
Step 1
Joined the 2 top boards together using 1.1/4 screws and drilled ¾” pocket holes.
Step 2
I cut out the curves for the handles using a saw. Drilled ¾” pocket holes in the aprons and attached them to the top using 1-1/4” pocket screws and wood glue.
Step 3
I cut the legs to the specified length, then rounded the top. I cut their lower part at an angle of 15º. Drilled a hole at the top for the connecting bolts in the next step. Drilled ¾" holes for the stretcher pockets and attached them to the legs with 1-1/4" pocket hole screws and wood glue. I made a crossbar 2 inches from the bottom.
Step 4
I drilled holes for the connecting caps. I attached the legs to the connecting bolts with caps.
Tip Do not over tighten so that the legs can bend.
You can use glue and flat spacers to connect the two top boards:
I made sure all the surfaces were properly aligned, then glued and clamped the pieces together using a parallel clamp. Waited for it to dry completely.
I sanded the legs with 180-, 220-, and 320-grit sandpaper and then wiped down each coat with a soft cloth, sanding with 400-grit sandpaper between each coat. Covered with linseed oil. The legs fold neatly away for easy and compact storage.
Table designs
Despite the variety of modifications, the models are not so different from each other. Usually this is a wide, stable stand with short or rounded legs.
The number of dishes or books or notebooks that will fit on the table will depend on the size of the stand.
When purchasing such an accessory, think in advance about how much you eat, whether you have enough space and how convenient it will be to eat food.
Sometimes manufacturers add handles for ease of use. They can be either built-in or removable. For some tables you can even buy handles separately.
Many tables have leg height regulators. You can find tray tables: they are lighter and more mobile, but much more stable than models with static legs, which is indispensable for beds with soft mattresses.
Particular attention should be paid to the width: the bed table is designed to not only be stable, but also should not hinder movement, so it is advisable to select wide models with legs at an angle of more than 90 degrees.
For travelers, the ideal solution would be folding tables that can be conveniently thrown into the trunk of a car or even stuffed into a suitcase: small in volume and inexpensive options. It’s not a pity to lose them on the train or accidentally break them while transporting luggage.
Business people will prefer multifunctional stand tables with newspaper compartments, cup holders, organizers and additional tiers for a laptop. Modern designers have learned to find stylish and laconic solutions for such people, avoiding cumbersome forms.
How to choose?
Before you look for a lunch tray, you should ask a few questions. What will you use the breakfast tray for? Or who will use it? Knowing these answers will help you know what to look for.
There are different types of tables:
Breakfast in bed tables
- collapsible lunch trays;
- with legs;
- without legs;
- portable;
- tray with cup holder;
- with space for a mouse and a lifting lid for a laptop;
- adjustable in width and height;
- trays with handles;
- and even lunch trays with a removable tray.
Trays also vary in style and material. Most Popular:
- bamboo;
- wooden;
- metal;
- combined.
Most often they are used for a convenient breakfast or delicate tea drinking in bed.
Among the styles that are valued are:
- modern;
- traditional;
- Asian.
That's not all, you have the option to choose what type of finish you want on your lunch tray. The most beautiful of all, of course, looks like wood trim in the following colors:
- natural;
- expresso;
- brown;
- cherry;
- Red tree;
- pine;
- Walnut.
This is an amazing invention
This, of course, is not only my taste, but also general statistics on sales and popularity of different models, which you can track yourself when you monitor this market. Someone may argue with this statement, and there are equally beautiful models made from other materials for you.

Another project
I also really liked this project and wanted to share it with you. This small table is suitable for creativity, games, family movies or drinking tea in bed.
It folds neatly and stows away when not in use. The handle can be used for hanging on a hook and convenient storage. Apply black tape from Ali Express so that you can use the tabletop as a chalkboard.
What you will need:
- 3 meters of slats 1×2 cm;
- plywood for the top;
- 4 Eurobolts, 2 1/2” long, with washers and nuts;
- you may also need a grip or hook to keep the assembled legs closed during transport;
- pen (if desired).
Basic Instructions
- Take all necessary precautions to operate safely and reliably.
- Work on a level surface free of imperfections or debris.
- Always use straight boards.
- Check the material after each step.
- Always drill holes before attaching screws.
- Use nail glue for a stronger hold.
- Wipe the surface of excess glue for models that will be painted, as dried glue will not stain.
Dimensions:
- Cut lumber.
- I collected the legs.
- I drilled a hole in the top of each leg.
- Attached the legs to the frame.
- At the top point, each leg was attached just below the top edge of the frame to allow for movement.
Detailed Guide:
Mark the location of the bolt holes every 21 inches (53 cm). Drill holes for bolts.
Take the 1x2 frame boards and create the shape. The frame can be nailed and glued, screwed, pocketed - it's your choice. The top part of the plywood will help support the structure.
Next, create two sets of legs and drill corresponding holes for the bolts at the top of the legs.
Tip: Cut the underside of the legs at a 15-degree angle to make the table more stable.
Then use bolts to attach the legs to the frame. Glue and nail the tabletop to the top.
Add a handle and personalize as desired:
- print the desired name using any font in OfficeWord, size about 225;
- print and place on the table;
- using a ballpoint pen, trace the letters with a lot of pressure;
- the pressure of the pen creates a mark on the wood, giving outlines for subsequent painting;
- paint the resulting mark with acrylic paints;
- fix the paint with varnish or other painting fixative.
Treat the product with wood varnish and let dry. If necessary, apply additional coating to the wood. Once the drying oil is completely dry, sand the piece in the direction of the wood grain using 120-grit sandpaper. Remove all sanding residue from work surfaces. Wipe the product with a clean damp cloth. It is always recommended to apply a test coat to a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color uniformity and adhesion.
Manufacturing materials
When making a bedside table, the following materials are most often used:
- Tree. As a rule, noble species are used, for example, oak or ash. The products ideally look elegant, elegant, but require special care. Avoid spilling liquid on them and protect them from mechanical damage. The main disadvantage of wooden models is their heavy weight. PVC structures will be much lighter, but they do not look so noble.
- Glass. They can be completely transparent, tinted, or colored. The material is durable, does not scratch, and is easy to care for. However, you need to handle it with care, because if it falls, the glass structure may break.
- Plastic. Used in the manufacture of budget models. The designs are easy to use, lightweight, and come in a wide range. Table maintenance is as simple as possible. Its only drawback is its fragility.
- Metal. Such models are considered the most durable, they look discreet and original. Made from chrome plated metal or powder coated paint. The design is protected from mechanical damage, but its weight is quite large.
- Bamboo. Models decorated with drawings and hieroglyphs look incredibly beautiful and original. They are lightweight, stable and durable. Their disadvantage is their high cost.
- Rattan and wicker. The design is practically weightless, airy, resistant to moisture and temperature. True, such models are classified as expensive.
The bed table can also be covered in leather. The product looks elegant, solid, and can fit harmoniously into any interior.
