Tips for use

Caring for frameless furniture is easy. A chair cushion filled with polystyrene foam may decrease in volume over time as the foam filling gradually loses air due to stress. The problem can be solved by simply adding padding. It is better to place frameless furniture filled with bulk materials away from heating devices, and also not to keep it in the sun for a long time, since due to the gradual evaporation of moisture, the filling will decrease in volume and the contours will be deformed.

If you decide to sew a bean bag chair for your children as a comfortable high chair, then it is important to wash the outer cover correctly, especially if it is multi-colored. For regular cleaning of the surface, you can use special wet wipes. Gentle substances without chlorine are used as laundry detergents, preferably with a liquid consistency.

A variety of options and shapes of a bean bag chair can bring comfort and mood into everyday life. Those who love new experiences just need to sew several outer covers for one pouf and change them according to their mood. Frameless furniture is a great way to decorate your interior.

What size should it be

A piece of furniture such as a beanbag chair is made in two sizes - 50 and 100 centimeters in diameter. These parameters directly depend on a person’s build and height. For a person up to 150 centimeters tall, a diameter of 70 centimeters is suitable. If the height is from 150 to 170 centimeters, the chair must be made from 80 centimeters in diameter, and so on in increasing order.

Parts that need to be sewn

Positive sides of the bag

In the company of family and children, with a cup of coffee and a book, while watching a movie: in any of these situations, it’s not even worth arguing that the furniture in which you sit helps you relax for the most part. Recently, the bean bag chair has gained incredible popularity. It can be found not only at home, but also in cafes and even in the office.

Convenience is due to the fact that the frameless and shapeless chair will take the position you want. It consists of loose filler and fabric that prevents the contents of the bag from spilling out. This gives a person the opportunity to sit comfortably and relax. After all, you won’t be able to relax your spinal muscles on an ordinary chair. In addition, the filler has the amazing property of reflecting heat. Therefore, sitting in such a bag you can feel additional warmth. This is also important, because the chair is close to the floor, which, especially in winter, gives off cold.

A bean bag chair without a frame is also a practical furniture option. It's easy to transport and even easier to upgrade. After renovation, the upholstery of old furniture sometimes does not match the color or texture, and changing it is quite expensive, because you cannot do it without the help of specialists. With a beanbag chair, everything is much simpler: you just need to sew a new cover and the new chair will decorate the interior again.

Choice of design and shape

A master who values his comfort will always think about the design of the future product and make it in a style in which it will be convenient for him to use the chair. The most popular forms:

  • Pear-shaped;
  • Ball shape;
  • teardrop-shaped;
  • Oval shape;

Creating a pattern

In order for the product to turn out smooth, you need to make a detailed pattern, taking into account all the nuances of the material and the shape of the object. You can quickly create a pattern yourself, but there are also a large number of ready-made solutions. If we talk about making your own pattern, you need:

  • Make patterns;
  • Using them, draw several elements that will make up the chair;
  • Place the pattern on the fabric and cut out all the details.

Important! Patterns can be completely different, depending on what properties the chair should have and what materials will be made. Below are several ready-made schemes.

Pattern with detailed dimensions for children and adults

A pattern is made on graph paper and then transferred to fabric where the details are cut out. It is worth leaving allowances for stitching and marking them with dotted lines. The pattern itself will consist of the following set of parts:

  • 6 wedge-shaped figures. Their width is 15 cm and 40 at the ends. Length - 130 cm, diameter 50 cm;
  • The top is in the form of a diamond with a side of 15 cm;
  • The bottom is in the form of a diamond with a side of 40 cm.

For a child, the wedges will be as follows: height - 90 cm, diameter - 45 cm, width - from 22 to 40 cm. The composition of the cross is the same in all cases.

Making a pear chair at home

A master class on making any product begins with preparing all the necessary materials and tools. First of all you will need:

  • Fabric for the cover 3 by 2 meters;
  • Fabric for cover inside;
  • Long zippers of 100 and 30 cm;
  • Filler;
  • Threads.

Tools you may need:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Centimeter;
  • Scissors;
  • Pencil or soap;
  • Graph paper for creating a pattern.

Step-by-step manufacturing instructions:

  1. Create a pattern and transfer it to fabric;
  2. Cut out all the parts;
  3. Zigzag the edges of the parts;
  4. Fold the side wedges and stitch 15 cm at the top and bottom;

  • Large circle - 80 cm diameter;
  • Small circle - 70 cm diameter;
  • The height of the back of the chair is 110 cm;
  • The height of the low point is 40 cm;
  • Rectangle with a length of 260 cm.

Manufacturing instructions

As you can see, all the pattern pieces are very simple, so sewing them together will not be difficult. But you need to follow a certain sequence.

Step 1. First you need to sweep all the side parts by hand. To do this, they are folded with their front sides facing each other and aligned. There is no need to connect the outer wedges yet.

Basting workpieces by hand

Step 2. Sew all the sour cream seams on a machine, departing 1 cm from the edge. The size of the stitches should be small enough so that small granules of filler do not fall out of them.

Sewing the product on a machine

Step 3. To strengthen the seams and make them more durable, you need to stitch them again along the front side. To do this, first iron all the seam allowances with a hot iron in one direction, then turn the product over to the right side and make a second seam along it next to the first so that it runs along the ironed seam allowances.

Turn the material inside out and sew the seams on the right side

Step 4. Fold the stitched pieces back together, wrong side out, and sew the outer pieces together, leaving room in the middle for the zipper. You should end up with a bag without a bottom, tapering towards the top.

Leave a hole in the case for the zipper

Advice. If the base of the future pear chair is not solid and consists of two parts, the lock can be sewn into it, and not into the side seam.

Step 5. Sew a zipper into the side seam. This is perhaps the most difficult part of the job.

Sew in a zipper

Step 6. Turning the pipe inside out again, carefully baste a small hexagon to the top cut, and a large one to the bottom. In this case, you need to accurately align the corners of the parts with the side seams so that there are no distortions. It is convenient to keep the zipper open during operation in order to be able to hold or pull the fabric from inside the bag.

Sew on the base and top

Step 7. We sew all the basting seams on the machine, after which we remove the threads that were used to baste the product and turn the finished inner cover right side out.

Remove excess threads and turn the bag right side out

Step 8. We repeat the same manipulations again, sewing the outer cover.

The outer cover is made using the same scheme.

Everything is ready, all that remains is to fill the chair with filler. It's not as simple as it seems. Polystyrene foam balls easily crumble, become electrified and fly away from the slightest air movement throughout the apartment. Therefore, we will need a special device that can be easily made from a plastic bottle.

To fill the case you will need plastic bottles

You need to cut off the bottom and neck, getting a short pipe. One end of it is cut to make four petals, and they are bent outward. Using tape, the pipe is attached to a bag of filler, and only after that it is cut through inside the pipe. Its second end is inserted into the open zipper of the inner case and foam chips are poured into it.

A bottle with the bottom cut off is attached with tape to a bag with filler, after which the packaging is cut with a knife

No matter how careful you try to be, the filler still manages to slip through. Therefore, if the outer cover is made of fleecy fabric, it is better to first fill the inner bag, close the lock, remove all debris, and only then put the outer dress uniform on it. If the fabric is smooth and nothing sticks to it, it will be more convenient to first place the inner cover in the outer one, align the holes of the locks, and then pour the filler into the chair.

The filler crumbles easily, so you need to work very carefully

We hope that this story and instructions were useful to you, and in the near future you will give yourself an excellent gift in the form of a pear chair in which you can relax after a working day.

Sewing a cover

Sewing is done after cutting. Before this, you already need to understand the dimensions of the chair, and the process is carried out like this:

  1. Create two blanks, fastening all the elements to each other with sewing pins. After this, the side seams are basted;
  2. Connect the seams by hand or using a machine and smooth them with an iron;
  3. Delay the side seams on the front side (outer cover);
  4. Place the wedges on both workpieces and baste;
  5. Iron all seams;
  6. Baste zippers for all unstitched areas;
  7. Make a portable handle if desired;
  8. Turn both covers inside out and grind off their bottoms, and then baste the circles and the top.

And a few more tips:

  • do not use too large foam balls, as they will wrinkle very quickly and the chair will need to be stuffed very often;
  • The use of cheap foam chips is also undesirable, since it is a product of recycling waste packaging foam. It’s better not to risk your chair acquiring an unpleasant odor;
  • Use whatman paper rolled into a tube to work with polystyrene. This way you can avoid the balls sticking to your hands and surrounding objects.

Filling the filler

The penultimate stage of work is pouring the filler into the cover. One of the two cases is filled to 2/3 of the volume. There is no hurry in this matter. If you are not careful, all the granules will scatter around the room and collecting them will be difficult and time-consuming.

Oval

Note! For pouring, it is better to use a regular large funnel or a homemade device made of paper or cardboard.

What is a bean bag?

Translated from English, bean bag is translated as “bean bag”, but in our everyday life another definition has become entrenched - chair bag.

Despite the unsightly name, this is comfortable, beautiful and inexpensive furniture, the main design feature of which is the absence of a rigid frame.

In its classic form, a bean bag is a large pear-shaped fabric bag filled with loose filler. Due to the even distribution of weight, it is comfortable to sit on.

Simplicity, functionality, safety and low cost have made the bean bag a cult product. Frameless furniture is actively used to furnish space on various television talk shows, in restaurants, children's rooms and many other places.

The final stage is decoration

The inner cover does not require finishing, as it serves as the base. But the outer one can be decorated with something. It could have originally been made from some kind of printed or altered fabric. You can make beautiful applique or embroidery on a simple plain material. You can also cover the chair with an additional bright cape: it will hide the seams and combine the appearance of the chair with the overall interior.

A drop of motley fabric

How to decorate

Frameless furniture can not only be created with your own hands, but also decorated. Even without various decorations, it looks great in different interiors, but you can additionally decorate it in various interesting ways:

  • Appliqués that are sewn onto various large parts of furniture, and patterns and designs are selected for this that match the style of the interior and the color scheme of the room;
  • Do-it-yourself embroidery, and for this purpose only strong and bright threads are selected, and it is also usually used for children's chairs in the form of cartoon characters;
  • Often different pockets are sewn onto such furniture, where you can put small toys, newspapers or other small items.

Thus, frameless furniture is considered an interesting choice for different rooms. It can be created from different fabrics with a variety of colors and properties. There are many models of such furniture, differing in shape and size, so you can choose a product that is ideal for a specific room. If desired, it can be created with your own hands, and can also be decorated in different ways, so it will become the highlight of any interior.

Care of the finished product

A homemade bean bag chair will last a very long time, but only if you take proper care of it. It all depends on the type of material and padding. It is worth choosing the safest, hypoallergenic and synthetic materials that can “breathe”. Replacing the filler and washing is required in the following cases:

  • Dampness;
  • The appearance of insects;
  • Gradual collapse of the filler.

Rectangular chair made from old jeans

The accumulated jeans that have gone out of fashion or simply become unusable will be an excellent material for sewing a comfortable rectangular chair, as in the following step-by-step master class. For one comfortable sofa you will need 6-7 denim trousers, filling, cutting and sewing accessories.

We cut the washed items of clothing into rectangles of arbitrary size, trying to create a minimum of waste in the form of tight seams and pockets. Pieces with embroidery and clasp are suitable. We iron all the pieces and lay them out on the table with a slight overlap on each other. Pieces of different colors, sizes, and textures will look great in a single piece.

We sew together all the sour cream details, retreating a couple of centimeters from the edges, using a special double stitch for jeans. We connect the two halves, attach the bottom and top. We place the filler in the small hole left and close it with a zipper.

Advantages and features of such furniture

A soft homemade chair is an excellent alternative to old, large and heavy sofas. It can decorate a room with any design and bring comfort and a special homely atmosphere to it. The main advantage of the bag is the ability to make it yourself and in a very short time. Moreover, everyone can do it.

Now it’s clear what a pear chair is and how the pattern for this product is prepared. Any craftswoman, even an inexperienced one, can make it. The only condition is to choose the right material and filler.

Pros and cons of a frameless chair

A soft and cozy ottoman is an excellent alternative to standard models. Such furniture can decorate any room and fit into the chosen style. Under the weight of a person, the chair takes on a special shape, which allows the vacationer to relax as much as possible, spend time comfortably reading a book, watching his favorite television programs, and communicating with his family. This design has a number of positive qualities, but is not without its disadvantages. Among the main advantages are:

  1. Mobility. The finished product is characterized by low weight and is often equipped with a special handle located on the lid. This allows you to move it around the apartment, move it or move it to another place without much effort.
  2. Benefit for health. Doctors recommend using frameless models for people who have problems with the spine. Thanks to its ability to adapt to the contours of the human body, the product provides reliable support for the spinal column.
  3. Safety. The furniture does not have a frame; therefore, it does not have sharp corners or hard parts, which makes it possible to install it in a children's room.
  4. Environmental friendliness. Natural materials used to sew covers, natural fillers, allow you to create an environmentally friendly product.
  5. Easy care. The outer cover is easy to clean from any dirt, and if necessary, it can be removed and washed in a washing machine.
  6. Durability. If the outer fabric is damaged, it can be sewn up, but inside there is simply nothing to break.
  7. Attractive appearance. The original structure and wide selection of color palettes will allow you to choose a product that matches any style.
  8. Safety of the floor covering. The absence of a point load makes it possible to move an object across the floor without damaging it.
  9. Comfort and versatility. Absolutely all people at any age can relax on such a chair, regardless of height and weight.

The disadvantages of frameless structures include the following:

  1. The main disadvantage is the crushing of the filler. Over time it needs to be replenished.
  2. The outer cover requires periodic cleaning and washing.

When installing a chair in a children's room, it is necessary to monitor the child so that he does not accidentally unfasten the cover, which can lead to unpleasant consequences for cleaning up spilled raw materials.
