You can do amazing things with your own hands, the main thing is inspiration, patience and desire. Sometimes homemade interior items turn out to be so unique and exciting that any experienced designer would be jealous. I want to share with you the story of how to make a garden table with a unique glass pattern, and describe in detail all the stages of its creation.
If you like to do things with your own hands and have enough patience, you are ready to create something new and amazing, I hope my technique will be interesting to you. I warn you right away, it will take a lot of your time and effort, but believe me, the result is worth it. In addition, this table can be a wonderful gift for someone close.
Don't be afraid that you won't succeed. This table was my first experience, and you can see in the photo that everything turned out just fine. The technique is very simple, the main thing is to adhere to the rules and carefully follow all the recommendations.
Description of work
- Prepare the wooden surface for decoration. Wipe the table and sand any uneven areas with medium-grit sandpaper. Wipe well again.
- Cut the discs into small pieces, approximately 3x3 cm.
- Glue the disk pieces to the table using glue. Place the elements on the table so that the distance between them is about 2 mm. Do not forget to alternate the back and front sides of the mosaic particles.
- Using construction putty, carefully fill all the empty spaces and indentations created during the design. Wipe off excess substance from the surface with a slightly damp sponge.
- After 12-24 hours, cover the mosaic table with two layers of acrylic varnish (with a break for drying).
Materials and tools
To start working with your own hands, you must have the following ready:
- moisture-resistant plywood 25 mm thick,
- rope,
- pencil,
- hacksaw,
- sandpaper,
- drawing pin,
- wood primer,
- paint brush,
- fragments of broken porcelain dishes with and without patterns,
- mosaic ceramic tiles,
- tile nippers,
- knife with blade (flexible),
- tile grout,
- tile adhesive,
- cement pigment,
- sponge,
- a piece of soft cloth.
General tips for tiling countertops
The execution of work must be approached very carefully. It must be said right away that using tiles as finishing coatings for countertops is not the most optimal solution and has many risks, which we will talk about in this article a little lower. If for floor coverings such errors go unnoticed, then countertops react extremely negatively to them. What is the best tile to use?

| Tile material | Brief description of technical parameters and operational characteristics |
| Ceramic tile | The cheapest and most common option in budget versions. In terms of mechanical resistance of the surface to various types of damage, it occupies a leading position and is far ahead of the properties of artificial and natural stone. The tile is covered with glaze, and this is glass, a very hard material. Ceramics have an unlimited choice of design solutions and linear dimensions. The disadvantage is great fragility. Ceramic tiles are completely non-plastic; when exposed to critical forces, they do not bend, but immediately crack. |
| Porcelain tiles | In all respects it occupies a middle position between ceramics and natural stone. The tiles have different thicknesses and surface areas, the appearance most often imitates natural stone. The cost is cheaper than natural stone tiles, but much more expensive than ceramic tiles. It is made using synthetic resins - this is a significant drawback. Professionals strongly do not recommend using it for kitchen countertops. The lining has direct contact with food products, including hot ones. Under such conditions, porcelain stoneware releases harmful chemical compounds that end up in food. |
| Natural stone tiles | The most expensive option, used only in exclusive interiors. Stone tiles are thick and are more often used as a countertop without various bases. Such kitchens are very prestigious and indicate the high social status of the owners. As for performance characteristics, natural stone is significantly inferior in all respects to the two described above. Its surfaces are easily scratched, the stone reacts with many chemical compounds, and cracks under the influence of moderate dynamic forces. |
Choosing tiles for countertops
We have outlined brief physical characteristics of the tiles, but there are also very strict requirements for the bases of the countertops.
Step-by-step instruction
- Since the table should turn from beige to white, we first paint the lower part of the table top and legs with white paint. Leave until completely dry.
- Degrease the table surface. Apply glue to it with a spatula, spreading it evenly over the surface. Glue the mosaic. It’s easy to do this with your own hands, since it is already a composition glued onto pieces of mesh.
- To cover the ends, we also glue cut out mosaic strips onto them. The side decor should be secured with tape until completely dry.
- When the glue on the table has dried, we begin to process the seams. Since the object itself is white, we will use white grout. Carefully seal the seams with a rubber spatula. Remove excess grout with a damp sponge. Leave the table for 24 hours to allow the composition to dry.
There is nothing easier than decorating a table in this way with your own hands. Now you can safely put a pot of flowers - water spilled on the surface will not spoil the beautiful tabletop.
DIY mosaic kitchen countertop: reviews
In reviews, users note the strength of mosaic tiles made from all materials. They assure that the surface is not afraid of being poured with water or hot dishes. The main advantage is the ability to use old and new cheap countertops as a base. Epoxy grout creates the most problems during installation. It needs to be mixed in small portions and applied very quickly.
Although finishing with mosaic tiles requires patience, the results are pleasing. Regardless of the material, the surface looks excellent. If you use this material to finish other surfaces, the furniture will look no worse than the most expensive designer furniture.
Tools
Before making a tabletop, it is necessary to carry out high-quality preparation and collection of tools. In many ways, the choice of tool is influenced by the base material for the mosaic.
So, for work you will definitely need:
- Antiseptic.
- Primer.
- Adhesive composition.
- Mosaic.
- Grout for seams.
Considering the peculiarities of using a mosaic table, it is necessary to choose the right adhesive composition. It must be plastic. Many experts recommend using white glue.
Especially if the lining is transparent. If the tiles are opaque, then regular tile adhesive is acceptable. A transparent adhesive has also been developed for glass tiles. When using it, it is important to prepare the base very well. It should be free of all kinds of defects.
Special attention is paid to the choice of grout for mosaic joints. It should emphasize the laid out pattern. Select grout to match the finish or white mixtures. Sometimes clear epoxy or sodium based grout is purchased. This type of grout looks especially beautiful with added shine.
As for the tool, you need to prepare the following:
- Putty knife.
- Container for mixing the adhesive composition.
- A container for mixing grout, if it is sold unfinished.
- Gloves.
- Rags.
- Sandpaper.
- Soft spatula for grouting joints.
