Headings: Beds, Furniture, Bedroom

The main attribute in the bedroom is undoubtedly the bed. It is from this that you can tell a lot about the owner - taste, material wealth. A good bed is the key to a great mood and relaxation.

However, it is very important that it matches the interior of the entire room: a correctly selected bed will not take up much space even in a small bedroom, but, on the contrary, will complement the decor and create a feeling of peace. It can serve as a room decoration, complementing the existing bedroom interior. It must combine several very important qualities: beauty, convenience and durability . Then it will serve its owner for a long time, delighting with its appearance every day.

High and low

The height of a low headboard is usually 90-110 cm. These values can be called the “gold standard” for beds with soft headrests. These are the models that are most often presented on the market.

A low headboard does not lose practicality and convenience. The height is enough to lean on comfortably. At the same time, the side does not immediately catch the eye, and thanks to this it fits organically into the interior. When you want a stylish, neat bed, you should pay attention to models with a low back.

The curved headboard softens the severity of the blue velor

A high headboard (140-160 cm) gives a different visual picture. It looks massive and large-scale, due to which it attracts all attention. The high side is a non-standard element in itself, because you rarely see it in an ordinary interior. Therefore, a bed with this design becomes the main accent around which the interior landscape unfolds.

Beds with high headboards look good in spacious bedrooms

High headrests also help to play with the size of the room. They create vertical lines that illusionistically increase the ceiling. Owners of small bedrooms should take this into account.

Important. If a bed with a high side is placed with its head not against the wall, but opposite it, then it will help zone the studio apartment. On the other side of the headrest, you can place a wide cabinet, once again emphasizing the border between the bedroom and the living room.

Wide and true to size beds

The most common headboard on sale is the width of which matches the width of the bed. This is a standard furniture solution.

Headboards whose width extends beyond the boundaries of the bed are an option for those who love unusual interior ideas. The backrests are increased by a meter or more on each side. The bed becomes illusively larger and begins to play a major role in the interior. Such furniture is relevant for spacious bedrooms. A wide side can make a small room visually even smaller.

The slightly curved headboard creates privacy

Headboards look interesting, as if slightly bending around the bed. They help create additional comfort and make the bedroom design even more attractive.

Additional “sides” will definitely prevent the pillows from falling

A brief procedure for making a wooden double bed

At the beginning of work, cut out all the necessary parts according to the dimensions contained in the bed drawing. These measurements are suitable for a double bed with a 150x200 cm mattress (if your mattress has larger or smaller measurements, make an adjustment). For the frame, prepare two boards 205x20x2.5 cm and 148.5x20x2.5 cm, to support the lattice you need 3 boards 202x10x5 cm, for the legs (4 main and 2 to support the lattice) you need 6 bars of 10, 5x10x10 cm - 19 identical boards 148x7 .5x2.5 cm. For finishing - 1 board 157.5x5x2.5 cm, 2 boards - 202x5x2.5 cm. The product will be made without a headboard, but you can use your own option.

Making a bed frame

The first thing you need to assemble when making a bed is the frame or frame - the basis of the entire product:

  1. Using the Kreg template it will be easy to make holes for self-tapping screws. We drilled them at an angle from the inside at the junction of one of the boards. If the holes are not made in advance, the wood structure may break when attaching the boards, and the connection will be less reliable.
  2. To make it clean, we use a hand plow to process all the edges of the boards that make up the frame, and use a grinder to process the cut points.
  3. To ensure structural strength at the joints, apply wood glue to the prepared parts (evenly over the surface or in a zigzag pattern) and connect the parts one at a time, forming a frame. Next, we fasten the panels with self-tapping screws (30 mm). At the joints, immediately wipe off excess glue.

When performing this stage of work, be sure to make sure (using a triangle) that the frame is level and all its angles are correct. Now you can paint or stain the frame, depending on the design of your DIY double bed.

Installing the slats support

  1. We make markings on the boards from which we will create side supports for the slats. To do this, we step back from the edge by 5 cm and make marks every 25 cm, then using the Kreg device you need to make holes 10x5 cm.
  2. If the frame is dry after painting, move it to the side. We place marks on the inside of the side of the frame, 5 cm from the bottom of the product. We draw a line along them - a place to place the support bar.
  3. Apply wood glue to the sides and ends of the bars. Having connected the block and the frame along a line, we fix them in several places with clamps.
  4. We fasten with self-tapping screws (50 mm) into the prepared holes.
  5. At the ends, 148.5 cm from the middle (74.25 cm from the edge), we make marks for installing the central part that will support the grille.
  6. We fix the support beam at the same level (5 cm from the bottom) with wood glue and 1 or 2 screws on each side.

We fill all the cracks with wood putty. After drying, the treated areas are carefully polished.

Working with bed legs and decor

On 4 (main) leg blanks out of 6, measure 2.9 cm, use a saw to make a bevel at the mark at an angle of 45°. The product will be installed with an inward slope to make the bed design more aesthetically pleasing. Correcting the cut points. The two remaining uncut legs will support the central support beam. We mark their installation locations 50 cm from each edge. This will allow you to accurately match the parts.

We paint the slats and legs of the bed, already sanded, as required by the overall design of the product. We coat the pieces with varnish and, after drying, chop them well with fine-grained paper. Clean and apply another coat of varnish.

Installation of legs and decorative strips

We prepared 2 (2.5 mm) holes in the ends of the side supports and in the central beam. We secure each leg with glue and 2 self-tapping screws (60 mm). Glue (if necessary) decorative strips, securing them with clamps. To avoid any signs of compression, the remaining pieces of boards can be used as spacers.

Simple shape and curly

Most often, the headboard has a rectangular shape, repeating the contours of the bed. The design is simple and therefore universal for different interior styles. A bed with a rectangular side will fit into classic, neoclassical and minimalism. Limitations are imposed only by the color of the upholstery and the presence of decorative stitching. We'll talk about this a little below.

The vertical lines of the headboard in the photo diluted the monotony of the interior

The circle-shaped headboard is also simple. It is often used in the design of children's beds.

Curly headboards look unusual and decorative. They have a complex symmetrical shape, which often resembles the back of a royal throne. Beds with such a headrest are placed in classic interiors, where there is carved furniture, thick curtains in a noble blue shade and multi-tiered pendant chandeliers.

Additional elements - ears can be removed at any time and give the bed a more “adult” look

Against the background of straight lines that fill the interior in the photo, the figured headboard looks especially expressive

Neat stitching emphasizes the sophisticated shape of the headrest

With or without decorative trim

A headboard with decorative trim is the opposite of simple headrests. Even in gray tones it attracts attention. We'll tell you why.

  • The capitonné technique, or carriage screed , gives the bed a royal look. Previously, carriage screeds were used to decorate furniture and carriages of noble people, so this decorative technique serves as an indicator of luxurious life.
  • Square, diamond-shaped and other types of picks “break” the headboard into elements of the correct shape. Straight lines give the furniture a strict look and help play with the geometry of the bedroom. If the board is “broken” into vertical lines, then the ceiling can be made visually higher.
  • Brass inserts are another decorative technique that helps give furniture a noble look, and at the same time the bedroom. Most often, designers use inserts in the form of vertical and horizontal stripes of different widths.
  • Gold piping and furniture studs around the perimeter of the headboard continue the theme of refined furniture. These decorative elements help to highlight the headrest against the wall and make it more attractive.
  • An additional “side” along the edge of the headboard creates a more comfortable environment. In addition, this decorative technique helps to retain heat if the bed is located near a cold wall.

If the interior requires laconic solutions, choose beds with simple-designed headboards

The red color of the upholstery in combination with the carriage screed makes the model in the photo relevant for classic interiors

A carriage screed can decorate a headboard of any color

If you choose a bed with upholstery that matches the color of the walls, the interior will be as laconic as possible.

An additional “side” with a edging made of furniture nails may seem pretentious, but in a classic interior these details look harmonious

Mattress base

The structure of the bed involves a rigid base for the mattress. This element is attached directly to the bed frame. There are usually two types of bases.

  • Flat (solid). It is a solid sheet of chipboard, plywood or MDF. This solution gives high strength. One of the disadvantages is the lack of ventilation of the mattress, which can lead to the formation of mold. For such a base, it makes sense to purchase a mattress with side perforations.
  • Lamels (slat base). Straight or curved slats can be used here. Usually made from birch, but sometimes metal versions are also found. The advantages include the possibility of repair; replacing the lamella is easy. High-quality ventilation of the mattress is also ensured.

A double bed experiences serious stress, so be sure to pay attention to the frequency of placement of the slats. The more often they are located, the better.

Leather and textile

The soft headboard is upholstered in natural and artificial leather and textiles. Each material has its pros and cons. Which ones exactly, see the table below.

Headboard upholstery material pros Minuses

  • in hot weather it sticks to the skin, in cold weather it is cool to the touch;
  • scratches left by pets' claws

  • shrinks when washed;
  • absorbs stains well
Velvet
  • wear-resistant;
  • gives the bed a sophisticated and expensive look;
  • pleasant to the touch;
  • various impregnations protect the material from fading and moisture
  • more difficult to care for, especially natural velvet;
  • low-quality material wears out over time and fades in the sun

These are the main upholstery materials. Manufacturers also offer headboards made of chenille, tapestry and other fabrics.

Important. The easiest way to care for a headboard is with a removable cover. It can be washed in a machine on a delicate cycle or replaced when wear appears or the upholstery fades in places where it is most often leaned against. When you pick up the headboard, be sure to ask the seller how many washing cycles the cover is designed for.

With additional features

Designers are not afraid to combine the headboard with bedside tables and tables, or install LEDs in it. At the same time, the furniture looks like a single whole, which gives the bedroom intimacy and individuality.

LED strips are often used for illumination. They let her go along the edge of the headboard. In the dark, this solution creates subdued romantic light and gives the bedroom additional volume.

Sconces that are mounted in the headrest create spot light. To make the lighting more functional, you can take lamps with a flexible base and direct the light flux in the desired direction.

If the bedroom is modest in size, you can organize additional storage space at the headboard. For example, make a three-dimensional structure, inside of which retractable sections with shelves are hidden.

The backlight can be placed behind the back or built into the design

Mattress

Most beds are sold complete with a mattress, but there are situations when the mattress has to be purchased separately. When choosing, you should decide which option you need.

  • Anatomical. These mattresses take the shape of your body. With the right density, they perfectly support the body, pressing only at certain points. Such mattresses are the most common.
  • Orthopedic. It is characterized by increased rigidity and provides excellent support to the spine. Recommended for people who have back or spine problems.

To correctly answer the question of how to choose a double bed, you need to take into account the fillings. The following groups are distinguished:

  • springless;
  • spring.

The best option would be to use mattresses based on a spring block; it can be dependent or independent. An independent spring block is considered the most convenient and safe for the spine.

When choosing a mattress, it is worth remembering the following rules.

  • If the weight of one of the spouses is more than 40 kilograms, it is worth choosing an anatomical mattress.
  • Pay attention to hardness; for young people, a hard mattress is better; the older the users, the softer the bed should be.
  • If you have problems with the spine, you should give preference to the orthopedic variety.
