The nuances of the bottom of the bed slats that need to be taken into account

Pros and cons of the design

Any bed consists of a frame and a base. The latter is most often formed from wood, high-quality steel or cheap composite materials. The correct choice of this element determines how comfortable it will be to use the structure for its intended purpose. The slatted bottom of beds is considered an excellent choice for children and adults, as it has an orthopedic effect.

Such structures are usually equipped with orthopedic mattresses. This combination provides ideal conditions for complete relaxation. Typically, such a bottom is represented by a durable frame of increased rigidity. Slats, otherwise called lamellas, are attached to it. They can be straight or slightly curved. They are attached at the same distance from each other.

The main advantages of the slatted bottom include:

  • Such bases are distinguished by high ventilation parameters, since air easily penetrates to the mattress through the distance between the slats, so the product will last much longer and will also have ideal hygienic properties;
  • Wood is most often used for the manufacture of lamellas, so the resulting products have high environmental parameters, which guarantees the product is hypoallergenic and non-toxic;
  • The bottom itself is considered not too expensive, and it is often part of the bed, so you don’t have to find and install it yourself;
  • They often produce an adjustable slatted bed bottom, which allows you to raise or lower it slightly, choosing the most comfortable position;
  • The bottom, consisting of lamellas, can be easily disassembled, so repair is considered a simple process.

The most affordable models are those in which the slats are made of birch or pine. Although such a base does have many positive characteristics, there are also some disadvantages that must be taken into account during the purchase. These include:

  • There is no rigid support between the slats, so after a few years waves appear on the mattress;
  • If shock absorbers are not used in the manufacture of such a structure, then the base will not be able to withstand significant loads, therefore such models are intended exclusively for people with low weight;
  • A springless mattress is not used with such a base, since after a short time it will develop deflections that will have a negative impact on the spine;
  • The slatted base lasts no more than 10 years, which is much shorter compared to the service life of other types of bottom;
  • Individual slats may break under high point loads or other factors, so owners of such products often have to spend money on repairs.

Materials for making a hard bottom

Much depends on what kind of boat you have and what kind of bottom you need “at the exit”. For light and small models, you can also make a slatted sling. But in large boats it will not provide the necessary stability. We recommend equipping larger models with plywood or aluminum flooring.

Think in advance about the rigidity of the structure, because stability and ease of movement depend on it. There should be no deflections, cracks or other defects. Some tips for choosing the material and shape of the bottom:

  1. The rake does not provide a truly rigid bottom, without deflections. If you decide to use a slatted bottom, move on it carefully.
  2. Plywood and metal are ideal options for flooring. This flooring can completely cover the bottom from bow to transom, allowing you to safely move and distribute the weight of the cargo.
  3. A book-shaped sling is a conventionally solid structure. On the one hand, it is comfortable, on the other hand, it does not provide good rigidity. Half a book is suitable for those who want to quickly assemble and disassemble the boat.
  4. The H-profile floorboard is more stable but suitable for smaller boats. The flooring is hard.

Varieties

Slatted bases are available in different parameters. They differ in size, materials, and rigidity. All options can be divided into two large groups:

  • With shock-absorbing elements - a special shock absorber is mounted at the end of each lamella, which helps distribute the load on the mattress under the weight of the human body;
  • Without shock absorption - a more rigid structure that practically does not bend.

By purpose they can be:

  • Single;
  • One-and-a-half-sleeper;
  • Double;
  • Children's.

Based on the material of creation, structures are distinguished from wood, plastic or steel. Wood bases are considered the most popular and of high quality, since no harmful components are used in their creation, and they are also durable and reliable. The bottoms are made of steel, intended for use by a large person or couple.

Often, a slatted bottom is installed in various interior items equipped with a folding mechanism. It is found in chair beds, sofas or other structures. Based on this, the following types are distinguished:

  • With a manual mechanism - they have a minimum number of different moving elements, but they are considered not very convenient, since during the unfolding process a person has to independently hold the bottom with the mattress;
  • Spring - have a short service life and are difficult to lift. Over time, the springs cease to be elastic, which requires their prompt replacement;
  • With gas lift - they are distinguished by soft operation, noiselessness and smooth extension. The user does not have to make special efforts to unfold the product;
  • With electric drive - rare, but at the same time it is the easiest to use. It is enough to press the necessary buttons on the remote control included with the piece of furniture to extend the structure;
  • Adjustable - the orthopedic base can be equipped with a special system that allows you to adjust the bottom, and in some designs you can adjust all the existing slats or only the elements located at the top or bottom of the product.

It is considered optimal for each user to purchase a product that has a regulation function. Thanks to it, every person can make the most comfortable sleeping place for themselves.

Dimensions and parameters

The dimensions of the slatted bottom completely depend on who the sleeping place is intended for.

Bed typeOptimal dimensions of the slatted bottom
SingleSuch beds are purchased for one user. Their sizes are 80x200, 90x200, 100x200. The size of the slatted day for them should be 70x190, 80x190 and 90x190 cm, respectively.
One and a halfIts dimensions vary from 120x200 to 140x200 cm. Accordingly, the slatted bottom can have dimensions of 110x190, 120x190, 130x190 cm. Under such conditions, more comfortable sleeping conditions are guaranteed, but this product can only be used by one person.
DoubleIt is used by two people, so it must have not only the optimal length, but also a significant width. The slatted bottom for a double bed will be 150, 160, 170 cm wide and 190 or 200 cm long.
Children's bedProducts for children should be specifically selected depending on the height of the child. The length should be 20 cm greater than the baby’s height, so if the child is 120 cm tall, then it is optimal for the bottom length to be 140 cm. You can also purchase products for growth, so often a single bed for adults is taken. Standard bottom sizes for children's beds are 80x140, 80x150, 80x160, 80x180, 80x190 cm or 90x140, 90x150, 90x160, 90x180, 90x190 cm.

Often the frame is selected individually for a specific user. In this case, the following product parameters are taken into account:

  • The length should exceed the person’s height by about 20 cm;
  • The minimum width for a single-bed design is 70 cm, for a one-and-a-half-bed design - 120 cm, and for a double-bed design - 160 cm;
  • The mattress is selected so that it is approximately 5 cm narrower than the base;
  • The height of the structure should vary from 60 to 70 cm;
  • The legs must be made of durable material, since the strength and stability of the entire structure depends on them, and their height should be within 25 cm.

Thus, when choosing a bed with a slatted bottom, it is important to take into account the numerous parameters of this design.

Making your own sun protection

In Ikea and other home improvement stores you can purchase not only finished products, but also materials for making curtains with your own hands. If a needlewoman decides to make such blinds on her own, for work you will need:

  • Bamboo or plastic frame;
  • Metal fasteners or ordinary Velcro to secure the canvas;
  • Dense material for blinds;
  • Thick cord.

Making such a curtain is much easier than sewing traditional curtains. To do this, you just need to take the necessary measurements and prepare a piece of material of the required length and width. It can be either non-woven material or dense fabric. But you should keep in mind that non-woven curtains are easier to clean. It is advisable to purchase material with a reserve, because the curtain is still rolled up to the desired length. A rectangular piece of fabric of suitable size is secured using metal fittings.

Options for slats and holders

The main positive aspect of using a slatted base is that a person’s weight is evenly distributed over the surface of the mattress. To create such a structure, lamellas or slats are used, for the formation of which various materials can be used. Experts recommend using products made from natural wood:

  • Birch wood is characterized by high strength, ease of processing and ease of bending, which allows you to obtain products of a suitable configuration. Has a yellowish tint. To create lamellas, an array aged from 20 to 45 years is used;
  • When using beech, expensive structures are obtained that have a white, yellowish or red tint. The material has good resistance to deformation. Due to its excellent elasticity, it is effectively used to create bent elements. Does not change its parameters when measuring humidity and temperature, and is also not susceptible to rotting;
  • Ash produces elastic and durable lamellas. The array is distinguished by a light shade. If the material is dried correctly, then it is not affected by various negative influences. It is easy to process and has a low thermal conductivity. The price of such an array is considered high, so it is used to create slats for expensive bed models;
  • Elements made from linden or poplar are low in cost. At the same time, they have good strength and softness. The material is easy to process, but if the humidity level changes constantly, then the wood must be treated with special protective solutions.

The slats have a width ranging from 5 to 10 cm. The maximum this figure can reach is 12 cm. They are laid across the bed. Between them, the same step is necessarily formed, equal to 5-7 cm.

To create a slatted base, it is allowed to use narrow slats, the width of which does not exceed 3 cm. They should be attached at a close distance from each other. A high-quality base must be equipped with lamellas, the number of which cannot be less than 15 pieces. They are attached to the frame with special holders. The most commonly used fasteners are made of rubber, equipped with specific shock absorbers. They are designed for heavy loads. Thanks to them, you can be sure that even after a long period of use there will be no unpleasant squeaking.

Beds in which the slatted bottom is formed by attaching slats to the frame with plastic holders are considered affordable. They have low strength and resistance to high loads. Such a base must be used carefully, since if the maximum loads are exceeded, this may cause the product to break.

Additional functions

The number of functions and capabilities provided to different types of beds or other interior items is constantly increasing. Therefore, you can choose a slatted bottom that has unique additions. The most popular designs are those that provide:

  • The ability to adjust the lower or upper part of the base, which always allows you to create sleeping conditions that will be comfortable for a particular person. For this purpose, an electric drive is usually installed. Older models have a mechanical control device. Electric control is considered an ideal choice when installed on a medical bed. It is much more convenient for patients to adjust the bed using the remote control;
  • The presence of shock absorbers increases the service life of the structure, and also has a positive effect on the orthopedic properties of the bed. These elements are installed at the end of all slats. They help to better maintain the optimal position of the mattress, and also reduce the load on it when the position of the person’s body changes. It is best to use this additional opportunity for people with serious back problems;
  • Possibility to adjust the level of rigidity of the product. To do this, special plates are attached to the base, located in the center of the structure. As soon as they begin to move apart, the bed becomes more rigid. To soften the bottom, the plates are shifted. With this adjustment, you can adjust the surface of the product to a specific person. This leads to the fact that the spine takes a physiologically correct position, which contributes to optimal relaxation of the person;
  • Various sofas or armchairs are often equipped with transformation systems with slatted bottoms, so the orthopedic effect can be formed not only in standard beds, but also in other interior items.

Thus, a slatted bottom is considered a fairly popular base for a bed. It has many positive parameters and has an orthopedic effect. Can be presented in different types and sizes. The latest models are equipped with additional functions that increase the comfort of use of the design, as well as simplify the adjustment process.

Cheap bed frames

Honestly, this is my first publication about the fact that Ikea has low-quality products and it’s hard for me. This is probably logical! After all, in order to make something cheaper, you have to skimp on quality. This does not apply to all cheap goods at Ikea, but there are exceptions everywhere.

Riken is an inexpensive bed frame measuring 140*200. I am based on reviews from customers who have used it for 3-4 years. For some, a leg burst, and for most, the bed itself began to creak. But the price is 4,999 rubles, sorry!))))
