Sconces for the bedroom - interesting ideas and tips for choosing for the bedroom interior design (140 photos)

The bedroom is a place for complete rest after a busy day at work. Therefore, lighting in this room should be properly organized.

Feeling comfortable while reading a book or applying makeup in the dim light is not an easy task. Therefore, at the initial stage of repair, they first determine the place where the wall lamps will be located and their design.

Criteria for choosing sconces

A wall lamp must correspond not only to the style of the bedroom, but to several other criteria:

Room scale. The size of the sconce above the bed in the bedroom should be proportional to the size of the room and furniture. A lamp that is too large and massive will not look appropriate in a small bedroom, and a lamp that is too small over a spacious bed will simply get lost.

The weight of the lamp must be correlated with the quality of the walls in the bedroom. It is better not to hang heavy metal sconces on fragile walls that are prone to chipping or plasterboard walls. In this case, replace it with a table lamp or floor lamp by the bed.

The color of the fittings. The base of the lamp is most often made of metal. The color and texture of the metal should match the handles of the furniture in the bedroom.

Types of wall lamps

As you know, the term sconce usually refers to wall lamps that are small in size. The range of such products in stores is very wide, and it is difficult to imagine that it would be impossible to choose an option suitable for a particular interior.

Sconces are divided according to several criteria - design, shape, material, style, and, of course, external design.

Design features of sconces

By design, sconces can be stationary or adjustable. Each option is convenient for a specific application.

Stationary models

Stationary sconces - the direction of the light flux is always stable.
Stationary models always have a lampshade rigidly fixed in a certain position and therefore direct the light flux exclusively in one direction, which cannot be changed. This type of sconce is less functional and is more often used to illuminate corridors and hallways. It is quite suitable, with some exceptions, for living rooms. Such models, as a rule, are more elegantly designed than adjustable ones, so they can be used as a decorative element of the interior if they are correctly selected to match its overall style.

In turn, stationary models are divided into the following options:

  • horns, which may have one or more horns, that is, sockets and shades for lamps;
  • flat, protruding from the wall no more than 40-50 mm. They are well suited for installation in narrow corridors and stairwells.

Adjustable sconces

In this model of sconce, the direction of the light flux can be changed in a way that is convenient for the owners at the moment.
Adjustable sconces are equipped with a flexible leg or a leg consisting of several articulated parts, on which a socket with a lampshade is fixed. Thanks to the ability of the legs to accept and stably hold different positions, the light flux can be directed to different areas of the illuminated area.

Adjustable options are more functional and convenient to use, but, let’s face it, this is often achieved at the cost of reducing decorative qualities. However, assessing external performance is a very subjective matter, and many people, on the contrary, really like the apparent simplicity. Such lamps, by the way, are simply perfect for modern minimalist styles.

Sconces in which the direction can be adjusted come only with horns and, as a rule, they do not have more than three horns. Such lamps are good for installation both above the desk and above the head of the bed, since, if necessary, you can direct the light to a specific area, for example, on a book. At the same time, the light will not disturb the sleeping person nearby or, for example, in the living room, other family members who are busy watching TV.

Shapes and styles of lighting fixtures

Wall lamps can be given different shapes, and the choice according to this criterion is linked to the sconce’s compliance with a certain interior style. There are a huge number of lamp configurations, and it is impossible to consider them all. Therefore, only a few of the most popular options today will be presented below.

  • Lamps with rectilinear geometric shapes (square, triangle, rectangle, etc.) are ideal for modern styles, especially for minimalism.

Original rectangular sconce with diffused light.
Such lamp models will fit into the interior of any room decorated in the appropriate style. Diffused light promotes rest and relaxation, so the sconce is perfect for installing above the bed in the bedroom or for creating a romantic atmosphere in the living room.

Semicircular sconce

  • Sconce models with rounded shapes are quite popular. They are compact, do not protrude too much from the wall, so they are convenient for installation even in a narrow corridor. Such lamps would also be appropriate as night lights, however, they are not particularly comfortable for night reading, since they provide too soft diffused light, or insufficient for normal “communication with a book,” or, if a brighter lamp is installed, it disturbs another person.

Horn stationary sconces can be equipped with shades or lampshades of various shapes.

  • The most popular ones still remain stationary and adjustable horn sconces, since their range can be called the widest and most diverse. Stationary lamps are produced both in classic styles and in modern interior fashion trends. Adjustable, as mentioned above, are most often made in “loft” and “high-tech” styles.

Sconce made in the form of a branch with flowers.

  • Not as popular as the above-mentioned models, but very beautiful and original are sconces made in the form of flowers and branches, as well as other stylized “natural” elements. Such lamps are usually used for living rooms or bedrooms, but they often serve as decorative lighting. They are not suitable for night reading if you use low-power lamps in them, and will interfere with rest if you install bright light sources.

Sconces designed in this way are perfect for the “romanticism” interior style.

A sconce designed as a lantern will fit perfectly into the interior of the hallway

  • For hallways, as well as for installation above the front door on the outside, sconce models made in the form of lanterns of various shapes and styles are suitable. Some of these types of options can also be used for living rooms or bedrooms.

Children's version of sconce.

  • A large number of sconces are produced for children's rooms, designed for different ages and genders of the child. Lamps can be given various shapes, which are decorated with plant elements, figures or images of cartoon or fairy-tale characters.

For young children, it is necessary to install safe lamps that, even if they fail, will not cause harm. In addition, if a lamp is chosen for a child under 3–4 years old, then it is worth purchasing a product that will not frighten him with its appearance or too bright light.

Types of switches for sconces

Wall lights can accommodate different types of switches. To choose the most convenient for yourself, it is worth considering all possible options:

Chain switch for sconces.

  • A chain or cord is a fairly convenient switch option. Its operating principle is simple: the lamp turns on and off when performing similar actions - just pull the chain to turn the light on or off. At the same time, the chain often adds decorativeness to the lamp; it can be made in “gold” or “silver”, which allows you to choose the appropriate option.

If you wish and have some skill, you can install such a switch in a wall lamp yourself. It is not in short supply, and its cost among different manufacturers and sellers varies from only 100 to 200 rubles.

Push-button switch for sconces.

  • A push-button switch can be installed on the sconce body if its shape, size and style allow. However, most often the button is located on a piece of wire and hangs down at the bottom of the lamp. This version of the switch is as convenient as the chain, but its “appearance” is not suitable for every design of the lighting fixture.

Key switch.

  • The key switch is convenient and reliable in operation, and also has an affordable price. However, the power cord on which it is located is plugged directly into the outlet, which means that it will be visible. This feature immediately reduces the aesthetics of the room’s design. Therefore, if you choose the keyboard option, it is recommended to at least hide the power cable as much as possible in a special box (decorative cable channel).

Soft touch switch.

  • An exceptionally comfortable option for controlling the lamp is a touch switch equipped with a soft touch sensor. To turn the light on and off using it, you don’t have to click a button or pull a chain—just touch the sensor with your finger.

This element is a miniature panel measuring 15÷20 mm, so it can easily be installed on any suitable surface. The sensor will practically not stand out, as it has a neutral aluminum color. The sensor is connected to the operation regulator using a thin wire that can be hidden in the sconce leg. The main equipment can be hidden behind the head of the bed, and the socket for connecting it is fixed to the baseboard or at the bottom of the wall.

How to connect a sconce with a cord switch

Installation of any of the above switches is carried out according to the same principle and diagram. All of them are placed in the gap of the phase wire.

We can add that some sconces may not have their own “personal” switch at all. This often happens when wall lights are included in the overall lighting scheme of the room and are controlled by permanently installed switches.

Materials for making lamps

Expert opinion: Afanasyev E.V.

Chief editor of the Stroyday.ru project. Engineer.

It is very important to choose the right sconce based on the material of manufacture, since not only its aesthetics will depend on this factor, but also its resistance to elevated temperatures, and, accordingly, the durability of the product. So, if you plan to use conventional incandescent lamps for lighting, you must choose a lamp made of material that can withstand high heat.

So, it is necessary to name the commonly used materials for making sconces:

Bronze sconce, made in antique style.

  • Metal . Expensive models use bronze, brass, aluminum, regular and stainless steel. Simpler products often use silumin, which is not distinguished by strength and durability - the alloy is very fragile. Paint and varnish coatings of different shades are applied over individual parts of the lamps. Some of the coatings imitate gilding, silver or aged bronze.

Wooden model of sconce.

  • Tree . Wooden sconce options are well suited for styles such as “country”, “Provence” and other interior design trends close to rustic ones. The biggest advantage of this material is its environmental friendliness and lightness of materials. In addition, wood differs from other analogues in its natural warmth and natural textured pattern.

Plastic adjustable LED wall light.

  • Plastic . Both expensive and budget lamp models are made from this material. Much depends on the quality of the polymer, the design of the sconce and the use of a certain type of lamp in the device.

Budget models are often made from low-quality material, “ennobled” with various coatings that can imitate bronze, silver and gold. But such lamps, alas, do not last long, since the polymer quickly ages and becomes fragile.

Higher quality options include sconces that have an adjustable design with LED lamps. Moreover, in these models the manufacturer does not seek to hide the manufacturing material under a masking coating.

The rattan lampshade goes well with the metal base.

  • Lampshades and sconce shades are made of glass, plastic, rattan, fabric, leather, etc.

Glass goes well with a base made from any of the materials mentioned above. Plastic shades are best suited for a body made of the same material or metal painted in a certain color. Rattan lampshades go well with wood or metal. Fabric lampshades are used for wooden, metal and plastic bases.

Lamps for sconces

Today there are several types of lamps on sale that can be used for installation in wall lamps:

Incandescent lamps are gradually going into retirement, replaced by more durable and economical competitors

  • The usual incandescent lamps are produced with bases of different sizes and can be used in sconces equipped with the appropriate socket. The main disadvantages of these light sources are their short service life, excessive energy consumption, and the fact that when the bulb burns out, they often tear off the base or even explode, and small and extremely sharp glass fragments fly in different directions.

In addition, the lamps become very hot during operation, so it is not recommended to install them in lamps with plastic shades and fabric lampshades. In any case, there is a certain limit on the power of such a lamp that can be installed in a particular device - precisely because of the high heat transfer.

Not so long ago, compact fluorescent lamps were perceived as a huge step forward. But their time seems to be passing.

  • Fluorescent lamps consume less energy (for which they have earned the common popular name “energy-saving”) and work much longer than incandescent lamps, but they have their drawbacks. Firstly, they contain mercury, and secondly, lamps with them cannot be connected to a dimmer, and this quality is sometimes very important for sconces. In addition, many lamps develop flickering over time, which is irritating to the eyes.
  • Halogen lamps are relatively economical, have good durability and excellent light output. They are durable and are not damaged if they burn out, but just like incandescent lamps, they get very hot. In addition, halogen lamps require special care during installation - do not tolerate touching the glass bulb with your bare hand. It must be said that this type of light source is practically not used in wall lamps or is extremely rare.

LED lamps are no longer so expensive, and it is best to opt for them.

  • LED lamps are considered the safest, most economical and reliable in operation today. They work longer than any other type and produce a bright luminous flux. In addition, LED lamps are constantly being improved, their range is growing day by day, and the cost is correspondingly decreasing.

Placement of sconces

Typically, two light sources are hung above a large double bed, and one above a single bed. The height of the sconce above the bed depends on whether you will be reading in bed. If yes, then the sconces need to be hung a little lower. You can sit on the bed and pick up a book or phone.

The sconce will be located about 40 cm above your head. If you cannot decide at what height to hang sconces in the bedroom, start from the standard height. Usually it is 170-180 cm from the floor.

At what height should sconces be placed above the bed?

Where to start repairing lamps in the bedroom? Of course, from creating a hanging lighting project. A carefully thought out project can give a complete picture of the number of accessories needed for the room and how to supply electricity to them. When creating a lighting project, the first thing to consider is the size of the room. Based on them, you can choose the most suitable height for installing sconces.

For a long time, people have used the physical characteristics of light to create certain effects, including distorting the actual size of an object. Therefore, correctly installed sconces can give your bedroom special warmth and comfort, while incorrect placement of light accents can ruin even the most sophisticated room design. The quality of life, the degree of health preservation and the ability to quickly carry out a person’s daily activities depend on the correct installation of lighting.

To choose the right height of accessories, you need to consider a number of important points.

The recommended installation height for the wall light is 1.2 to 1.6 meters from ground level. However, this indicator is not absolute and may be violated due to the design features of the bed. In this case, it is easier to proceed not even from the distance from the lamp to the floor, but from the distance from the chandelier to the pillow on the bed. Ideally, it should fall from 1 to 1.2 meters. Installing the lamp at this height will provide enough light in the room to read or watch TV without straining your eyes too much. In the case of mounting sconces on the dressing table, you need to follow almost the same rules as when lighting above the bed. Here it will be considered that the optimal height of the lamp is to install it approximately at shoulder level.

In principle, sconces can be installed anywhere in the bedroom; There are no special conditions that require strict compliance. Act in accordance with your desires and feelings: your personal visual perception of lighting will help you better than professional advice.

Sconce shape

Modern sconces come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes. According to their modifications, they are open and closed.

In open sconces, the light source is surrounded by a lampshade, but does not cover it. These lamps provide the most light. If you want the sconce in the bedroom to add height to the ceilings, turn the lampshade so that the lamp is facing up. The flow of light will create a vertical that raises the ceiling.

In a closed type sconce, the lamp is covered with a lampshade. It is worth remembering that colored lampshades take away some of the light. Therefore, for bedside sconces it is still better to choose light-colored lampshades or transparent models. Otherwise, the sconce in the bedroom will look great in the photo, but it will be uncomfortable to read with it.

Ease of inclusion

The type of switch depends on the installation and location of the lamp, but most importantly, it should be such that it can be easily found in the dark and used without getting out of bed. The following devices are used to light lamps:

  • cable;
  • wrench;
  • lever arm;
  • button;
  • touch mechanism

Modern sconces work with conventional incandescent lamps, halogen counterparts, energy-saving and LED modifications.

Installation of sconces

Most modern bedroom sconce models that hang above the bed are already equipped with a switch. It can be located on the lamp itself or on an extended cord underneath it.

When installing a sconce, it is worth considering how long the cord is. The sconce should be hung at such a height that you do not have to get out of bed to turn off the light.

Often the sconce needs to be mounted on the wall, as you would with a picture or photograph in a frame, and the wire plugged into an outlet. If you are annoyed by the wire on the wall, the future location of the sconce needs to be considered

Advantages of wall lighting

Wall sconces are local lighting devices that are attached to a surface.

The main advantages of mounting lampshades on the wall in a room are:

  • compactness and lightness: bedside sconces for the bedroom can be mounted at any height and surface;
  • efficiency: low-power light bulbs consume less electricity;
  • convenient operation: wall lamps are easy to control using a switch;
  • unusual design that allows you to create a directed or diffused flow of light;
  • quick installation - performing this work does not cause any particular difficulties;
  • ease of care.

Switch types

If you are preparing wiring for future lamps in advance, it is worth knowing that there are several types of switches for them:

Single. Such a switch can regulate the operation of only one device. If you hang two sconces, you will have to install two switches on both sides of the bed;

Consistent. It allows you to turn on several devices and usually has 2 keys;

Switch with regulator. Some sconces have the ability to adjust the brightness level of the lighting. For their correct operation, it is better to use special switches. They may have a key, the brightness will increase with each press, or they may be round, the light will gradually become brighter as the control is rotated.

Light direction

The installation level mainly affects the overall light intensity. For example, the higher the lamps, the brighter the room will be. Therefore, pay attention to the design features of your sconces. If ceiling lights look upward, then such models are more often used for soft background lighting. They can be installed lower, closer to the lower threshold of the recommended height. And if down, then up. This is already a directional lamp, and it is more suitable for reading or embroidery.

Lamps and interior style

In order for sconces to harmoniously complement the bedroom interior, they must support the overall style of the room.

For classic bedrooms, glass and crystal lamps with gold and silver elements are suitable. Candle lamps look great in classics.

For a Japanese-style bedroom, themed lanterns with hieroglyphs or an image of sakura are suitable.

For Provence style, a sconce with a lampshade with small floral patterns is suitable.

For a bedroom in a minimalist style, laconic round and cubic lamps made of white frosted glass are suitable.

In the high-tech style, appropriate sconces of unusual shapes made of glass, plastic and metal of different colors.

The rustic style is characterized by woven and wicker lampshades. The stylization of the sconce under a kerosene lamp looks especially colorful.

For loft bedrooms, rough lamps that imitate lamps in industrial premises are suitable.

What to consider when choosing height?

When choosing the height of wall cabinets in the kitchen, there are many factors to consider. However, if everything is done correctly, the kitchen space will be comfortable and practical. Before installation and selection of height, it is worth considering:

  • the growth of the one who spends more time in the kitchen than others, and ideally the whole family;
  • availability of free space under cabinets;
  • other pieces of kitchen furniture and their configuration, sizes.

Quite often, the space under hanging cabinets is not left empty. It is occupied either by pieces of furniture or some household appliances. Of course, most often a tabletop is placed under them, and this must be taken into account. After all, equipment and utensils will be located on it, so it is worth making sure that the lower border of the cabinet does not interfere with normal operation.

Man's height

The main factor when choosing the height of hanging cabinets is human height. After all, not only comfort, but also the quality of the finished food depends on how convenient it is to work in the kitchen. The easier it is to work in the kitchen, the more desire you will have to cook. Many housewives do not like the cooking process just because they have to bend over a lot, climb on stools, and avoid opening doors. As a result, the possibility of injury increases, but the desire to cook – on the contrary.

According to experts, for a person 175 cm tall, the bottom border of the closet should be located at a height of 150-155 cm from the floor. For housewives with a height of more than 175 cm, this figure should be 160 cm, and for those with a height of more than 185 cm, placement at a level of 165-170 cm from the floor is appropriate.

It is important to take into account the height of the wall cabinet. It is best if the height of the top shelf is at a distance equal to the person’s height plus 20 cm

As for the bottom shelf, it is best to place it at eye level.

It is advisable to take into account the average height of all family members if each of them is cooked periodically in the kitchen. If someone cooks alone, then it is enough to take his height as a basis for reference. For people of average height, the optimal location for hanging furniture is at a height of 140-150 cm.

When choosing the height at which the cabinets will be mounted, it is best to follow a couple of simple rules:

  • the height at which hanging kitchen cabinets are located should allow the housewife to reach the top shelf without stands or extra effort;
  • The height for wall cabinets in the kitchen should be selected so that, standing next to them, the housewife can see, without raising her head, the objects standing on the top shelf.

Furniture dimensions

To avoid many problems, you should choose a standard headset. So, the typical dimensions of wall cabinets for a kitchen space are as follows:

  • height varies from 35 to 70 cm;
  • depth ranges from 25 to 45 cm;
  • The width ranges from 15 to 80 cm.

As a rule, the standard height of the lower tier reaches 90 cm. It includes the height of the base and frame, as well as the thickness of the tabletop. As for the depth of the lower cabinets, it averages 60 cm (plus or minus 10 cm). It is allowed that the working surface of the tabletop protrudes beyond the edge of the cabinet by approximately 4 cm.

To select the lower border on which the hanging structure will be located, it is important to take into account all of the above parameters. The bottom shelf of cabinets should be located at a height of 85 cm above the countertop

For cabinets with a height of 70 cm or more, choose a distance from the bottom edge to the working surface of 60 cm. As for the second and third shelves in wall cabinets, they should be located at the most suitable and highest height, respectively

The bottom shelf of cabinets should be located at a height of 85 cm above the countertop. For cabinets with a height of 70 cm or more, choose a distance from the bottom edge to the working surface of 60 cm. As for the second and third shelves in wall cabinets, they should be located at the most suitable and highest height, respectively.

Dependence on hood and stove

Wall cabinets cannot be installed above the stove. However, they can be mounted above the hood. Moreover, this solution has become a classic for many interiors.

During installation, the distance from the hob to the cabinets should be at least 60-65 cm. In this case, it is unlikely that it will be possible to install cabinets at the level of adjacent sections. However, we must also take into account that there are materials that, when heated, can release hazardous substances, such as chipboard. It is recommended to install a hood at a distance of 75 cm from a gas stove and 65 cm from an electric one, and wall cabinets are mounted above it. The thermal hood even has special shape options for more convenient placement of kitchen furniture.

How to buy a quality lamp

Give preference to sconces from well-known manufacturers.

Check for a safety certificate and instructions in Russian. The presence of these documents indicates the accreditation of this manufacturer in Russia.

Buy lamps of high and medium price categories. Models that are too cheap are most likely made in China and will not last long.

Pay attention to the wire. Its braid should be thick enough, and therefore safe. The wire must be flexible.

Check with the seller what wattage lamps can be used in the lamp so as not to melt the lampshade.

If sconces have plastic elements, they should not emit an unpleasant odor.

There should be no chips or scratches on the lampshade and mount.

If possible, give preference to LED lamps. These modern sconces will last you much longer than classic ones, and they consume much less energy.

Not only the design of the sconce is important, but also the color temperature of the color it produces. The light depends on the selected lamps. For bedside sconces, it is better to choose natural light or light in the yellow spectrum. It will help you relax before going to bed. Yellow spectrum light also reduces eye strain when watching TV or reading from a phone in the evening.

Norms and requirements

In accordance with the requirements of SanPiN 2.2.1/2.1.1.1278-03 and SP 52.13330.2011, the level of lighting in the bedroom will differ significantly depending on the functional area in which it is located:

  • for the bedroom, the level of general lighting should be at least 150 - 200 Lux;
  • in places of increased visual stress, for example, near the dressing table, the level should be at least 300 Lux;
  • if you install a table in the bedroom where you work with documentation or do handicrafts, you must provide illumination of 300 - 500 lux;
  • for decorative lighting in the bedroom, 20 - 30 lux will be enough.

In addition, when arranging bedroom lighting devices, it is necessary to be guided by design requirements:

  • It is recommended to place lighting switches at a height of 0.8 to 1.7 m in accordance with clause 6.6.31 of the PUE. However, in children's rooms the height of the switch should be about 1.8 m.
  • We also note that the key switch should be installed at the entrance from the side of the door handle in accordance with clause 7.1.51 of the PUE.
  • To protect against electric shock in emergency situations, the housing of lighting devices and structural conductive elements must be connected to protective grounding in accordance with the requirements of clause 1.7.51 of the PUE.
  • Connection to the network can be made by terminal connection, soldering or crimping in accordance with clause 2.1.21 of the PUE; it is prohibited to connect network elements by twisting

Please note that the color temperature of the lamps should be in the warm spectrum, from 2500 to 4000 K. If you neglect this rule, then cold light will increase a person’s tension, which can cause insomnia when falling asleep

DIY installation process

How to hang a sconce correctly with your own hands? The work is carried out in several stages:

  1. preparing the tools necessary for mounting and connecting the lamp;
  2. power cable connection;
  3. fastening and connecting sconces.

Preparatory stage

For installation work on fixing and connecting the wall sconce you will need:

  • screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • indicator screwdriver, which allows you to determine the presence/absence of electricity on the cable;
  • drill or hammer drill (depending on the material of the wall on which it is planned to mount the lighting equipment);
  • marking tools;
  • knife;
  • pliers;
  • set of fastening elements;
  • connecting terminals or insulating tape.

All tools used must be equipped with an insulating layer.

Insulated tools for electrical work

Electrical cable connection

The next stage is preparing the cable for connecting the sconce. Depending on the user's preferences, the wall lamp can be connected:

  • through the socket. This method involves the presence of open wires, which can negatively affect the interior of the room and safety when living together with small children or pets;

Turning on the sconce through a socket

  • offline.

The supply cable can be:

  • laid in the wall (the most complex and labor-intensive process, during which the walls are chipped and the niches are subsequently sealed);

Hidden cable routing for connecting sconces

  • hidden in a plastic cable channel, which also protects the equipment from children and pets.

Using cable channels

A unique classic

The most versatile option for bedroom lamps is a classic-style sconce. This style is always relevant and is distinguished by its special elegance and nobility. For example, sconces made in the form of antique candlesticks will look chic in a bedroom with a similar style.

Classic sconces can be white, black, gold, silver and other universal colors. Classic is usually simplicity, but at the same time sophistication.

Sconces with elegant decorative details, with patterns or decorated with forged elements, such as birds or flowers, look very luxurious.
