You can arrange several sources of storage in your home. Many people are accustomed to saving space in the house by using beds with drawers. This is convenient, in terms of area they are similar to a closet, and the space is really used more efficiently. It is decorated stylishly and effectively, and it is not necessary to make something out of wood or use complex tools.
Previously, practical bed owners (which not everyone had) had a valance border. The variety of styles leaves users confused. They think that only experienced professionals can sew this, but a little instruction helps solve the issue of ignorance.
What to consider when choosing
When choosing a single model with drawers, it is important to consider the material from which it is made
The most suitable material for durability and environmental friendliness is natural wood. In children's rooms, it is undesirable to use beds made of chipboard, as they can emit fumes of formaldehyde resin; Pay attention to the appearance of the product, how it will fit into the overall interior of the apartment; Of particular importance is who the bed is being purchased for. It must correspond to the age of the person sleeping on it, his weight and lifestyle. In addition, the bed must be comfortable and multifunctional
It must match the age of the person sleeping on it, his weight and lifestyle. In addition, the bed must be comfortable and multifunctional.
In some cases, you can choose a single sofa with a drawer for linen instead of a bed. They are equipped with drawers with a special mechanism on rollers. This design makes it easy to arrange a sleeping place, and when assembled, you can keep bed linen and pillows in the niches.
Advantages of a single design with drawers:
- Wide range for all categories of consumers;
- Low cost compared to double models;
- Rational use of free space in a small room;
- Availability of storage space for bed linen, pillows, blankets and children's toys if the bed is for children.
The disadvantages include the possibility of failure of rollers, guides and other accessories. But they can be easily replaced with new ones. When arranging a children's room, they use a small single bed with drawers and a side, which is especially relevant in a small child's room. It will help keep the room space free so that the child can play on the floor if desired. And the pull-out elements are perfect for storing toys.
The single-bed option is also suitable for arranging a guest room. You should always have a place to provide overnight accommodation for overstaying guests. In addition, it is convenient to store additional pillows and blankets in the niches.
How to complement a bed with a footboard
Often, a bedroom is not only a room for sleeping, but also for relaxation, entertainment, and storing various things. That is why you can often find an “added” one instead of a stationary footboard. This is useful furniture that fits perfectly into the interior, because it is selected according to the appropriate design. Everything in the bedroom should be in harmony and matched to a given style. This also applies to the second back of the berth. An important role is played by the height of the foot of the bed, size, practicality, and comfort.
Quite often you can see a banquette near the sleeping bed. A soft, rectangular bench that has no back will perfectly replace a chair or any other seat. Here you can fold your things before going to bed, read a book or watch TV. A bench, like the foot of a bed, will look great in more traditional interior styles - classicism, empire, baroque, art deco.
You can also use a chest of drawers to decorate the bed. Thanks to this footboard, you can also store the necessary things near the bed. You can also place small interior items or small things on it that remind you of certain events in life. A bed with a footboard of this type will look better in a classicist style.
If you want the height of the foot of the bed to be at the same level as the sleeping place, then you can choose a fashionable and practical chest. It is often made of wood and rattan. This addition will look amazing in a nautical or Provence style room.
A couch can become a place for relaxation and at the same time the foot of the sleeping bed. You can lie down comfortably on it, read, watch TV or drink coffee.
In the classicism and art deco style, a bookcase is often used as a backrest. This will not be a very high foot of the bed, but quite comfortable and practical. You can put your favorite books on the shelf, and lay a comfortable blanket and several pillows on top. Voila! The perfect reading spot is ready.
Choice of color according to style
Depending on the style in which your bedroom will be decorated, you need to choose the main color.
- Classic and modern. Cream, beige, milky shades, and coffee-with-milk colors are suitable for these styles. You can create a contrasting interior by combining pastel colors with black, chocolate or rich purple.
- High tech. This style is characterized by the presence of shiny surfaces, glass and mirrors. The walls can be painted white, steel gray, with black or red accents.
- Ethnic style. When choosing a background for such a bedroom, do not rush to purchase wallpaper with bright ornaments or hieroglyphs, the walls are the background, so let it be as uniform as possible. Choose colors that are close to natural - light brown, soft green, pinkish, blue. You can combine these shades with imitation reptile skin or animal skin - it will turn out very stylish.
- Provence and country. These styles are close in spirit, the design of the bedroom should be cozy and warm, the shades are predominantly natural: cream, milky, lavender, light green and others. Don’t get carried away with imitations, the materials should also be natural.
- Rococo. This style is characterized by nobility and pretentiousness: a combination of beige and dark brown, purple and silver, white and gold or carmine pink will look beautiful.
- East style. One of the few styles in which bright shades are a pattern. Gold, burgundy, yellow, blue - all these colors can be embodied in the interior. You can decorate the accessories in bright colors, but make the walls plain - it all depends on your preferences.
When choosing the color of the walls, you need to take into account that the same shade will look different in the morning and evening. So if you're planning to paint a wall, apply the paint to a small area and watch how the color changes throughout the day.
Color and pattern
A brightly colored skirt is a versatile choice. If you choose a light color such as white, pink, yellow or another pastel, make sure the bed skirt is made of heavy fabric to capture enough light.
A valance is a great place to display an interesting design, print, shapes, motifs, patterns or texture. It can complement or contrast with other fabrics in the room.
How to choose bedroom furniture: general rules and characteristics
One of the principles of competent bedroom furniture is to choose furniture of the same shade. However, if you are ready for stylistic experiments and you have interesting ideas, you can ignore this principle and select furniture and interior decorations of any colors, in accordance with personal preferences and tastes.
Other important principles for furnishing a bedroom are:
- Coincidence of the general style of the room and furniture. For example, if you prefer minimalism in the interior, one bed, a mirrored wardrobe and a bedside table will be enough for the bedroom.
- Comfort and functionality. Choose bedroom furniture that will provide you with the desired degree of comfort and at the same time perform all the functions assigned to it.
When choosing individual elements of a bedroom set, start with the largest object - a bed or other sleeping place. Double beds are an excellent solution for a large room, but in conditions of limited living space it is better to prefer other options, such as a folding sofa. This product functions as a sleeping place at night, and during the day it easily folds up and frees up space in the room, turning into a sofa for accommodating guests or family relaxation in front of the TV.
Bedroom wardrobes do not have to be heavy and huge, as they were before. Bulky, inconvenient cabinets and walls have been replaced by compact compartments of various configurations. Sliding wardrobes are suitable for any interior and optimally use the space of the room. Chests of drawers with drawers for storing things are often chosen as an addition to a compartment. The top of this piece of furniture is used as a bedside table.
If there is enough space in the bedroom, you can organize an area in it for putting yourself in order - a dressing table, a chair or pouf, a mirror. These types of bedroom furniture are available in a wide range and differ both in design and shape, as well as in material.
Another popular bedroom attribute is a bedside table. It can be used to place a table lamp, an alarm clock, a night light and various small items that may be needed at night.
When choosing bedroom furniture, keep in mind that:
- It is better to furnish small rooms with furniture in light colors to visually increase the volume of the room.
- And, conversely, for a spacious room, a good style solution is loft, classic or Provence. Dark, luxurious classic furniture sets will decorate a large bedroom and become the main color accent in it.
- Art Nouveau and Art Nouveau are still relevant. If you are not satisfied with traditional forms and familiar interior decor, look for inspiration in these styles.
- Monochrome solutions are hotly fashionable at the moment (especially black and white or gray furniture sets consisting of multifunctional items). In parallel to strict monochrome, there is another trend: a combination of pastel and bright colors.
As for the design of furniture for bedrooms, this year minimalism with emphatically restrained and ascetic forms is relevant. And, of course, timeless classics.
Beds of original shapes are gaining popularity. The optimal and convenient option for a bedroom set is a bed, a small table (for working on a laptop, etc.), armchairs, a chest of drawers and a closet.
The following technical and aesthetic requirements apply to modern bedroom furniture:
- Environmental friendliness of materials. It can be an array of different types of wood - oak, beech, walnut, ash. Cabinet furniture coated with veneer is environmentally friendly.
- Reliability and long service life. Good bedroom furniture lasts at least half a century, and does not require repairs in the first year of use.
- Comfort, spaciousness, ease of use. This mainly applies to wardrobes, chests of drawers, bedside tables and other furniture designed for storing things.
- Modern design and ergonomics. Heavy, uncomfortable sets have long been out of fashion; consumers choose compact and versatile furniture that successfully performs its functions and leaves maximum free space.
- Compatibility with the interior. When choosing furniture for your bedroom, living room or other room, proceed from its general stylistic direction and color scheme. Otherwise, the furniture will look inharmonious in the room.
Overview of species

Below is a description of the main types of bed valances.
- Strict . They are products sewn from dense, smooth fabrics (poplin, jacquard, gabardine); the folds on such models are made only in the middle on each side or at the corners. Suitable for bedrooms decorated in a classic or high-tech style. Those who are fans of pure geometry in the interior will definitely like it.
- Models decorated with drapery . They create a certain charm and romantic atmosphere in the bedroom. Such products are sewn with soft folds and finished with lace, bows, embroidery, and ruffles. Light, breathable fabrics are used - silk, chiffon, cambric, satin and others. This valance looks gentle and feminine, so it will fit perfectly into a young girl’s bedroom, decorated in Provence style.
- Pleated . For decoration, a large number of folds are used (one-sided, double-sided, bow). To ensure that the folds hang beautifully and do not lose their shape, dense, heavy material is used for sewing. This valance looks elegant and expensive.
Depending on the design features, valances come in two types.
- Solid . They are a single design with a sheet or bedspread. They can be the same color as the bedspread or stand out (a different type of fabric or shade). You can make such a decorative element yourself by sewing it to the bedspread.
- Removable "skirt" . This product is a separate part that is attached to the base of the bed or mattress with an elastic band, special loops or ribbons.
Why do you need a bed valance?
Nowadays, a bed skirt is a decoration, the finishing touch of decor. But many years ago, a bed valance was not a decorative detail, but a functional component of the room. The sleeping place was made high because the floor was too cold. Often the height from the floor to the sleeping place was one meter. Wardrobes and chests of drawers were not yet widespread. Clothes, utensils and other household items were stored in chests, placed under the bed for convenience, and covered with a skirt for beauty. In addition to its aesthetic function, a valance bed skirt covered personal belongings from strangers and was considered a talisman against the evil eye.

Size
When it comes to choosing the right bed skirt, size is the first and most important thing. If it's too big, it will never fit correctly on the bed, and of course, if it's too small, it won't fit at all. Any occasion can spoil the appearance of the skirt and detract from the overall appearance of the room. So do some research on how to choose the right skirt;
- Be sure to measure the actual size of the bed, it may differ from the declared size due to the mattress, springs, etc.
- Pay attention to the height based on the size of the mattress.
Finishing touches
The skirt of a simple bed can be decorated to make it look like it was made to order: add lace, decorative ribbons, appliqué, fabric inserts, etc. Experiment with design options on paper, and then buy the materials you need.
Once you've decided on the right size, good color, interesting fabric, and finishing touches, take a few minutes to iron the valance. It will hang better over the sides of the bed once you eliminate unsightly wrinkles in the fabric.
With a new bed skirt installed on your bed, your bedroom will look finished, like a professionally designed bed. Sweet dreams!
How to sew a throw blanket
The original purpose of the bedspread is to decorate the bed when people are not sleeping on it. Like a bed cover, a throw-on cover allows you to clean your bed quickly and without much hassle. This everyday blanket can be made from thick fabric and can even be used as an additional blanket. Bedspreads in another style are sewn to the shape of the mattress and fit around it, giving the bed a neat appearance. Such bedspreads allow you to use the bed as a sofa for daytime relaxation. In addition, you can sew bedspreads with a straight “skirt” with counter pleats at the corners, as well as with a gathered valance and contrasting edging, which are very cozy in appearance.
Steps for sewing a double-sided throw blanket
To make a double-sided bedspread, you can use fabric that is harmonizing or contrasting in color for the top part and lining. If you want to insulate the bedspread, quilt it or choose a thick fabric. The size of the bedspread depends on your taste. Select the fabric for the edging and prepare your sewing tools.
- Taking measurements for the bedspread. Measure the length (A) and width (B) of the bed covered with bedding. Decide how low the blanket will hang (C). Add C to length A; if you want the bedspread to cover the pillow, add another 15 cm. To width B, add two lengths C. Using these measurements, cut out the top piece and the lining; If necessary, provide allowances for seams and for pattern adjustment.
- Processing the corners of the bedspread. Round the 4 corners along the wrong side of both pieces, draw arcs using a round template and cut the fabric along these lines. Fold the top and bottom pieces in half and check that all corners are cut equally.
- Connecting parts. Place the top and bottom panels right sides together. Pin both parts around the perimeter and sweep, leaving 1 cm from the edge.
- Cutting out the edging. Measure the perimeter of the blanket along the basting line. Cut out a strip of fabric for the edging, equal to the perimeter plus 10 cm for the joints. Determine the width of the binding as you wish, but add 2 cm for the hems.
- Attaching the edging to the bedspread. Place the edges of the blanket and the borders right sides together. Pin, baste and machine sew one edge of the edging to the top piece of the bedspread 1.5 cm from the edge, along the fold line of the binding. Trim the seam allowance to 1cm or half the final border width.
- Completing the edging. Turn the blanket over to the other side. Fold the binding over the edge, pin, baste and sew with blind stitches to the lining 1.5 cm from the edge.
- Finishing stitch for the bedspread. If you wish, you can sew on the edging using a finishing stitch. True, these stitches will be clearly visible. Iron the finished bedspread and place it on the bed.
How to sew a bed valance?
Anyone who knows how to sew at least a little can easily cope with this task. For those who are not good at tailoring, a simple method that we found on the Internet is suitable.
You need to take old, unnecessary bedding. Cut it into strips with a large margin of length and width. If the valance is with folds, the length of each strip needs to be multiplied by 2 or 3. Let's say we have a bed 180 by 200 cm. This means that the length of the frill will be 580 cm in total. If we make it draped or pleated, we will need stripes with a total length 12 meters.
The parts are assembled directly on the bed and secured with pins. You can immediately gather the fabric or lay folds and secure them with needles.
Then you need to cut off the excess and, if necessary, make marks and sign the details. After this, the pattern elements are removed and measured.
“Finish” fabric is purchased according to size, and cutting is done. The parts are laid out again on the bed, the folds are secured with pins. Next, you need to make an estimate and sit down at the sewing machine.
If you don't have a machine, you can do without it. Using special adhesive tape and an iron, the edges of the fabric are processed. The parts are fixed directly to the base of the bed using double-sided tape, pins or something else. There is no need to wash the valance often, so this method is quite good.
If you sew several pockets to the valance, then books and favorite little things will always be at hand.
Spacious stripes on the crib valance allow you to store diapers, sanitary napkins and rattles.
But in order for every thing to have meaning, and not just decorativeness, it must be included there. So, if you decide to sew a valance for the bed in your bedroom, you apply Russian embroidery patterns to it - a simple piece of even bright fabric will immediately turn into magical and unique.
Create the world around you not just more beautiful, but also more consciously.
How to properly sew a zipper into trousers, master class (instructions with pictures)
Materials and tools:
- sewing machine;
- trousers with a one-piece valance (codpiece) and finished side, step and middle seams before the start of the codpiece (see photo below);
- a rectangle of fabric for the hem (I take the fabric from which the trousers were cut, as it is thin and pleasant to the body);
— zipper;
- thread, scissors, tailor's pins, ruler, tailor's chalk
Processing the zipper, codpiece and slope:
Step 1. Cut out the slope. On the fabric we draw a rectangle with width = valance width x 2 = 10 cm, height = valance length = 19 cm. We round the bottom corners.
Cut out:
Fold in half , inside out:
Overcast the edge:
Step 2. On the front side of the trousers, mark the middle seam line:
For WOMEN'S TROUSERS, on the LEFT side, draw a line parallel to the middle seam and passing from it at a distance of 1 cm closer to the outside of the valance.
Fold it inside out and baste it .
Step 3 . We place a zipper under the resulting allowance so that the teeth are visible. Secure with tailor's pins.
Step 4. Place the edge under the zipper so that the outer long edges of the edge and the zipper coincide, and the upper edge of the edge coincides with the waistline of the trousers. Let's baste.
View from the back side:
Grinding
Step 5. Fold the halves of the trousers face to face so that the middle seam lines match. We sew the right side of the zipper tape to the right valance , ONLY TO THE VALVE, NOT TO THE PANTS. (I remind you that here we are looking at how to sew a zipper into women's trousers; if you need to sew a zipper into men's trousers, then vice versa.)
From the front side, processing the codpiece at this step looks like this:
The white lines are the lines of the middle seam of the trousers.
Step 6. From the wrong side, sew the outer edges of the valance pieces
Step 7. Processing of the codpiece continues. Mark a line on the front side.
Step 8. We lay a finishing stitch according to the line . We secure the bottom with a short zig-zag seam .
This completes the processing of the codpiece.
This is what a zipper looks like, sewn into trousers with a one-piece codpiece, in the finished product, after attaching the belt:
In this article, we talked about what fasteners for trousers can be, found out what a codpiece, slope, valance are, and looked in detail at how to sew a zipper into trousers with a one-piece codpiece (valance). I tried to explain in detail so that processing the codpiece yourself would not cause you any difficulties. Easy sewing for you.
What it is and what functions it performs
In the old days, folds of fabric hid the space under the bed, but then functionality, rather than decorative function, came first. People were forced to make high beds, because it was too cold below, and the higher they were, the more comfortable and warmer they were. Sometimes the height of the structure reached one meter. Since closets had not yet come into use, all household utensils and bed linen were stored in chests and baskets that were placed under the beds.
Long strips of material were richly embroidered with patterns, decorated with lace, and then sewn along the edge of the sheet. When sewing, they used white cotton fabric - calico, damask or cambric. It was allowed to sew on “purchased” lace, but ancient patterns and ornate lace were more valued; they were used to judge the hard work of a girl of marriageable age.
It is not customary to waste time putting patterns on sheets. Bed linen served a different function; it had to be changed and washed frequently. A bed skirt that stores family information, which is considered a talisman of family well-being, gets less dirty. The patterned fabric was not only sewn along the edge of the sheet, but also attached with elastic or Velcro to the mattress or bed base.
Handy devices that hold the sheet on the bed
If you do not have the opportunity to purchase factory-made fasteners for holding sheets, you can use improvised devices. They are not reliable enough, but they will help if the need arises. They can be simple and even unexpected things:
- clothespin holders (“crocodiles”) from curtains or small office clips. Take 4 or 6 pieces for each side and attach the edges of the sheet to the mattress;
The rings from the clothespins must be unfastened so that they do not cling to the material.
- elastic bands or soft ribbons sewn on each edge of the fabric at an equal distance from the corner of the mattress;
- a sheet tucked far under the mattress on all sides;
- fabric valance made with a sewn-in thick elastic band. It is put on over the sheet, pressing it along the perimeter of the sleeping place;
- adhesive tape, buttons, loops.
Stationery clips and clothespins from curtains tear the material, especially thin ones. Their use is often not recommended.
It happens that the product is attached to the mattress with pins. But there are a number of disadvantages:
- they are difficult to unfasten every time before changing bed linen;
- they can tear the coating at the attachment points;
- It is easy to prick yourself with such a pin.
Finished Bed Skirts
When you're shopping for sheets or bedspreads, you'll often find a matching bed skirt in the same collection. But be careful! Most of these products are made from inexpensive fabrics that will not look good on the bed. And often the drawing can be the same or similar, which will create overkill. In the case of colorful bed linen, it is better to choose a plain option. Otherwise, it's the other way around.
Look for options with a return guarantee if the valance doesn't fit well with your decor.
History of origin
In the old days, a valance, or, as it used to be called, a “spectrum,” was not only a decoration for the bedroom, but also had a purpose. Due to the fact that the floors in ancient houses were cold, for comfortable sleep the beds were made quite high (up to 1 meter from the floor). In addition, the free space under the bed served as a place to store the owners’ belongings. And in order not to expose everything folded underneath, they used the valance as a kind of curtain. To avoid drafts under the sleeping place, the “skirt” was sewn from dense material. The embroideries that decorated this decorative detail were very different - geometric and floral patterns, images of animals and birds, elements of the World Tree, various mythological images. Some Slavic peoples depicted entire scenes from their lives on their valances - folk festivals, hunting.
Also, using various techniques, amulets and symbols of protection were depicted. It was believed that such embroideries would protect owners from troubles and illnesses. The features of the valances are:
- their functionality and practicality;
- adding elegance and wealth to the interior of the room;
- the ability to sew it yourself without any problems;
- long service life.
How to decorate?
The most popular materials for valance are the following:
- Chenille.
- Velvet.
- Faux suede.
No matter how beautiful the fabric used is, the bedroom will feel like something is still missing. This circumstance can be corrected by transforming the valance.
Using lace, ribbons or other fabric, you can decorate this attribute with bright colors. Thus, your bedroom will not only acquire a finished image, but will also shine with vibrant tones.
Types of bed valances by style
When creating a bedroom design, the bed valance should match it. There are several styles of skirts: traditional, pleated and draped.
Traditional valance
A traditional bed skirt is suitable for a room designed in the styles of constructivism, art deco, kitsch and classic. The valance looks strict: it is a dense, heavy fabric with folds at the corners.
Traditional valance
Pleated valance
A pleated sleeper skirt will perfectly complement styles such as classic and eco. When creating a pleated part, the folds are made at such a distance that they can be smoothed out later. The width and direction of the folds can be selected.
Pleated valance
Drapery valances for beds
This design element adds romance and airiness to the room. A valance with drapery is suitable for a children's bed for a girl. For production, light chiffon or tulle is used, which is collected in small folds or flounces. Additional decorations include lace, bows and ruffles.
Drapery valance
Models
When choosing, they are determined by the type of model. Common types:
- Strict. For sewing, smooth fabrics mixed with cotton or polyester are used. The model is characterized by counter folds that are stitched at the corners of the bed. A strict option is suitable for a classic style that takes a modern direction. Strict valance for the bed
- Draped. The model stands out with a large number of smooth folds. Light fabrics are used in the manufacturing process: silk, chiffon, tulle. Decorated with lace, ruffles, bows. The drapery looks gentle and aesthetically pleasing. Suitable for decorating a room in Provence or country style.
Drapery - Pleated. This option differs from the previous one by strictly highlighting the folds. For self-sewing, make clear drawings so as not to disturb the symmetry of the folds. To prevent folds from smoothing out, heavy fabrics are used for sewing: chenille, velvet, suede. Emphasizes the elegance of a room in a classic or vintage style.
Pleated valance
Models by design:
- as one with the coverlet. Covered over the bed. You can sew the product yourself: the valance is sewn to the bedspread.
One-piece option
- removable decor in the form of a skirt. The valance is attached to the bed or mattress frame using rope, elastic, loops, Velcro or tape.
Removable “skirt”
However, not every model is made of material that matches the color palette of the interior. The right choice depends on taking into account important nuances. Otherwise, the valance will not last long or its texture will not fit into the design of the room.
The valance design should be compatible with the print of the bedspread and curtains in the room.
What role does a bed valance play?
From a historical point of view, such decor was sewn for a practical purpose. The design of the bedroom was not given much attention, but they tried to make the room as comfortable as possible. The valance was used as a kind of curtain (skirt) that hides caskets, chests or other things important to the owners.
Antique beds were made high. Sleeping at this level is comfortable, since the heat usually lasts for a long time in the upper part of the room. Therefore, the “skirt” was made of dense materials so that there was no draft during sleep.
Among other things, people believed that if you decorate your sleeping place with embroidery with protective symbols, then the person will not get sick.
The embroidery motif was varied. They embroidered amulets for newlyweds and for the cribs of small newborn children. Sometimes a geometric pattern of symbols or family history was applied. Features of this decor:
- multifunctional;
- practical;
- easy to sew the product yourself;
- long service life.
What types of welt pockets are there?
There are more than 10 different types of pockets for things. Each one is unique in its own way, but you need to create them without haste, and it’s better to measure the sides once again before taking up the scissors. Then there are photos of the pockets and a brief description for each, as well as design tips for DIYers and those new to sewing.
Welt pocket “in a simple frame”
In the photo we see a rectangular frame and an insert with another fabric . To do this, you must first measure the sides, then draw with chalk or special pencils for fabric.
Then make a slit in the center of the frame and carefully tuck the edges inward. Next you will need an iron. It is necessary to iron the edges of the frame evenly. Only after this can you insert additional fabric, turning the ends of each fabric in one direction.
To ensure that everything turns out smooth and without displacement, also iron the additional fabric and initially use needles for joining.
Welt pocket “in a complex frame”
This option is simply a variation of the first version. But it additionally includes a special detail made from an additional piece of scrap.
Welt pocket with flap
This option with a valve looks very nice.
It is divided into an element with one facing and two. When making the product, this option is practically no different from a simple one with a frame, but it will require a special valve. It is made to size separately.
The valve itself is initially created on the wrong side . Then cut the part that was made so that the sides do not diverge and insert the valve there.
The second option is done in a similar way, but the frame will have two facings and therefore there will be an additional line above the valve .
Welt pocket with zip fastening
This complex species has three varieties at once. It's a simple zipper. For it, use a zipper, which is initially sewn to additional fabric. Then create it as a simple element with a frame.
–>
With a leaf, it will be useful to create a leaf in addition to the blank with a zipper, and insert it first when sewing in so that it is on the front side.
Framed slotted zippers
Models such as zippers in a frame should be considered very common options.
Welt pocket with leaflet
The leaf represents a separate part, which is combined with the product, and the creation takes place using a simple frame technology.
The stitching itself runs a millimeter from the edge. This is real skill and very delicate work . You can use an iron before stitching. This will make the fabric more pliable and outline the corners.

Design options
There are two design options for these decorative elements:
- It looks like a single blanket , laid on top of bedding or placed on the base of the crib under the mattress.
- It is a “skirt” with elastic, rope, tape or Velcro. It is put on the mattress or on the bed frame itself after the bed is made.
The first design option is used if the side panels of the frame are not very high, and the base of such furniture is located almost at the same height as the top line of the frame. A cloth with a valance is spread on the base, and a mattress is placed on top.
If the side panels of the frame are large and the mattress is partially or entirely contained in the frame, a “skirt” is used. A one-piece bedspread with valance can be used for a variety of bed options.
Choosing the right bed
It is recommended to purchase a bed from natural materials.
- What is the main element in any bedroom? It's definitely a bed. The choice of such furniture today is very large, so everyone can satisfy their taste preferences. When choosing a bed, you should take into account the fact that it must match the overall style of the room.
- As for the size of the bed, it is better to opt for large-sized furniture, since it is on such a bed that you can relax as fully as possible. It will be very good if you have the opportunity to purchase a bed that is made from natural materials. Some designers also advise choosing a bed that stands out in a certain way from the interior of the bedroom. Then it will become the main part of the room.
This is interesting: Types of mattresses - let's find out together
Why buying an orthopedic mattress is not enough: properties of an anatomical bed
An orthopedic mattress is present in every third home today. But not everyone knows that the base on which it is placed must also be ergonomic. Only in this case is a person able to assume a physiologically correct position. If you choose a suitable bed, it will improve the properties of the mattress, extend its service life and have a positive effect on your well-being.
The orthopedic design has the following useful qualities:
- Ensures the correct position of the spine, preventing the development of osteochondrosis, arthritis, arthrosis.
- Helps a person relax and have a good rest.
- Prevents the mattress from sagging, increasing rigidity.
- Prevents back pain.
- Extends the life of the mattress, as it creates normal air exchange underneath it.
- Suitable for every room, regardless of its design style.
Beds with orthopedic bases differ in size, color and shape. The buyer chooses exactly what suits him.
Fabric selection
The canopy suspended above the sleeping area must be made of breathable fabric. For cribs it is most often sewn from thin tulle. Thanks to the mesh texture, the tulle allows air to pass through freely and easily gathers into beautiful soft folds.
If the crib is in the sunny part of the room, you can choose a denser material: cotton, satin, linen. Some parents prefer to equip their baby's crib with two canopies: transparent and light for the hot season, thicker for the cold weather.
It is important to remember that whatever fabric you choose, it must be natural. Synthetics almost do not allow air to pass through, a greenhouse effect will be created under it and there can be no question of any healthy and comfortable sleep under an artificial canopy
The colors for children's canopies are chosen to be plain, soft pastel colors. These colors emphasize the weightlessness, airiness and purity of the canopy and look great in the interior of a nursery.
Modern use
Use is coming back into fashion. In modern times, it fits well into the interior of children's rooms or large bedrooms. Delicate shades will aesthetically highlight a teenage girl’s room.
Light or matte colors, decorated with floral prints, are noticeable in the Provence style. Sometimes you come across country options with dark shades and rough fabric. Plain ones are used in high-tech style. Strict models with geometric angularity are characteristic of minimalism or modernism.
It serves not only the function of decoration. There are practical models with sewn-in visible or hidden pockets. They are convenient for storing small items, books, napkins.
Criteria for choosing a good bed base
As a result, we will define the main criteria that you must pay attention to when purchasing a base:
- Frame type: collapsible or solid.
- Bed size - check that the dimensions of the base and frame match.
- Equipped with additional options: lifting mechanism, transformation system, vibration massage equipment.
- Quality of the mattress (a base with flexible slats will enhance orthopedic properties).
- Raw materials and materials used in production. If you are faced with the question of which bed base is better: wooden or metal, first of all, find out the type of wood and the thickness of the metal.
- Price level - this indicator is directly dependent on all of the listed criteria.
If you are choosing an orthopedic base, then you will have to understand all the intricacies and compare different options for lamellas. Also, do not forget about choosing the right mattress. Since we use the bed for a long time, before purchasing it is necessary to study the various types and design features of the bases.

Some useful tips from experienced needlewomen with extensive experience in decorating a baby’s crib:
A canopy on a crib is not just an accessory, it helps protect the baby from drafts, light, and insects. However, after a few months it is worth removing it - the baby may grab the fabric with his hands, pull and even drop the entire suspended structure on himself
It is very important to wash the canopy regularly and often, because dust collects on the fabric, which can lead to the development of allergies in the baby
The canopy will protect the crib from dust
To decorate the back, you can use ready-made or homemade appliqués, and if you have the appropriate skills, you can easily decorate the frame with colorful designs. Paint for any children's things should be water-based, since it is non-toxic, does not emit strong odors and dries very quickly. When the child grows up a little, the images on the back can be used for the child’s leisure time - telling him fairy tales about the characters drawn on the crib.
Baby crib decor with drawings
So that the baby can entertain himself during periods of wakefulness, it is worth attaching toys and rattles to the sides of the crib.
A child’s sleeping place cannot be cozy and comfortable without high-quality bed linen made from beautiful fabric. Young parents should remember that pillows and blankets made of natural fluff can cause allergies in babies.
Gathered valances
Ruffled valances can be cut using both longitudinal and transverse threads. This depends on the pattern of the fabric and how many seams you intend to make.
- Materials for sewing a gathered valance: decorative fabric;
- sheet cover or mattress pad.
Cutting fabric
To determine the footage, measure the width of the mattress and add two of its lengths. Increase the length by 2-3 times for shirring, depending on the thickness of the fabric. Thin, light fabrics will require more gathers, thick fabrics will require less. Measure from the top of the mattress to the floor and add 11.5cm allowance for hem and seams.
Cut along the cross thread of the fabric. Divide the total length of the valance by the width of the fabric and determine the number of necessary valance parts. Round fractional numbers. Now multiply the number of pieces by the length of the valance (from top to bottom) to determine the total amount of fabric required for the valance. Dividing this number by 100 cm, you will get the required footage.
Cut along the grain of the fabric. Determine how many full times the length of the valance (from top to bottom) will fit across the width of the fabric. Divide this number by the required total length of the valance, taking into account seam and hem allowances. You will receive a number that determines the amount of material required. To determine the footage, divide this number by 100 cm.
Decorate a baby crib with your own hands: valance and canopy
All parents prepare in advance for the birth of a child - they make repairs, buy a crib, bedding, etc. Every young mother wants her baby to grow up in a beautiful environment. Therefore, the interior of the baby’s room is carefully thought out - from the design on the curtain fabric to the paintings on the walls. The question of how to decorate a crib interests many mothers. Such decoration can be a canopy or a valance.

How to make a canopy yourself?
A canopy over a cradle is not only beautiful. It is also protection from bright light, flies and mosquitoes. You don’t have to buy it at the store; you can sew it yourself. To do this you will need fabric, finishing tape, scissors, a needle and a sewing machine. You will also need a canopy holder, a hook and a cord. The holder can be made of strong wire or you can use a hoop.
The amount of fabric required depends on the height of the canopy and the mounting location - the ceiling or the back of the cradle.
The fabric chosen is natural, light, light colors.
For a crib canopy, natural chiffon, tulle or thin chintz are suitable. For ceiling mounting, you will need 4 m of material with a width of 1.5 m. Satin ribbon looks good as a finish. It will need 7 m.
The fabric is cut into two canvases measuring 1.5 m x 2 m. The canvases are folded together with the right sides inward and stitched along a length of 2 m, the seam is smoothed.
The result is a rectangle 3 m long and 2 m wide. The height of the crib canopy will be 2 m.
Scheme for cutting a canopy for a crib.
A 7 cm wide ribbon is folded in half lengthwise and smoothed. Baste it to 3 sides of the rectangle, starting from one of the sides, and stitch it. The fabric is in the middle of the tape. At the corners the tape is pinched, making turns. The remaining untreated upper edge of the canopy is folded over the entire length by 0.5 cm and smoothed with an iron. Fold it again by 3-4 cm, press it and stitch along the entire length.
Thick wire is bent into the shape of a circle with a diameter of 30-35 cm. You can use a hoop. The top hem of the crib canopy is placed on a wire, after which the ends of the wire are carefully secured. 3 cords 20-25 cm long are attached to the ring. They should be placed at the same distance from each other.
Above the crib, a hook is attached to the ceiling using dowels, from which the canopy will be hung by cords. The top of the canopy can be decorated with a bow from the same ribbon. In this case, more tape will be required. You can decorate a baby crib with bright appliques on the canopy, ruffles, frills, it all depends on the imagination of the needlewoman.

Long forgotten valance
Valance diagram with assemblies.
In ancient times, beds were decorated with valances - lace capes that went down to the floor. You can make such a valance for a baby crib with your own hands. The valance frill not only decorates the crib, but also disguises those items that are often placed under the baby’s cradle, for example, a box of toys, diapers, etc.
Sewing a valance for a baby crib is easy. You will need fabric, threads, needles, pins, scissors, and a sewing machine. No patterns needed. You will need to measure the length and width of the bottom of the crib and the distance from the floor to the mattress. For example, these dimensions are equal: bottom length - 140 cm, width - 70 cm, height from floor to bottom - 45 cm.
The valance consists of 5 parts - 1 base and 4 frills. The base is a rectangle with dimensions of 140 cm x 70 cm. When cutting it, seam allowances of 2.5 cm are made. The frills are cut out in the form of long rectangles. Their width is taken to be 45 cm + 5 cm (1 cm is the seam allowance at the top, 4 cm for the hem at the bottom). For beauty, the frills drape. It must be remembered that folds increase fabric consumption by 2 times. Those. You will need to cut out 2 rectangles measuring 50 cm x 280 cm and 2 - 50 cm x 140 cm.
Options for canopies with valances.
On all side parts, the short sides are processed - first, they are folded 0.5 cm, then folded again by 1 cm, smoothed and stitched. Next, hem the bottom of the frills - turn the edge 1 cm, then 3 cm, smooth it and sew along the entire length. The raw top of the products is stitched twice at a distance of 0.5 cm and 1 cm from the edge. The line is made with the largest step. The fabric is pulled together along these lines, collecting folds. The length of 2 finished frills should be 70 cm, the other 2 – 140 cm.
The finished frill is applied to the base 2.5 cm below its raw edge. There should be 2.5 cm left on the sides. The edge of the base is folded toward the side part by 1.25 cm, then folded again by 1.25 cm and stitched. Do the same with the remaining three frills.
As you can see, it’s not difficult to transform the appearance of the crib with your own hands, you just have to show your imagination. In addition to the canopy and valance, the solid backs of the crib can be decorated with bright stickers with different objects. You can sew flat mattresses in the shape of animals, which are tied to the walls on the inside of the cradle. This will not only decorate the crib, but will attract the baby’s eyes and protect him from bruises on wooden parts.
Should you choose a sachet or a blanket?
Both the sachet and the bedspread can be used to create accents in the bedroom interior. They can be changed depending on the season (woolen in winter, silk in summer) or design trends (for example, in 2019, Pantone experts recommend decorating your home with coral-colored items).
But if the practical component is important to you, remember that the bedspread has more functionality. For example, a sachet will hide only a small part of the bed linen. And if your beloved cat or dog decides to sleep on your bed, it can lie not on the sachet, but on the duvet cover. This means that there is a risk that the bedding will quickly become dirty or covered with pet hairs.
A sachet is not only a narrow, but also a short bedspread. It will only cover the duvet and mattress (except for models made to order according to your measurements). If you decide to “hide” the bed frame or under-bed space (so that less dust accumulates there), the sachet will no longer save you; you will need a bedspread or a special sheet with a skirt.
As you can see, different types of bedspreads can make it easier for you to clean around the house or transform your bedroom, making it as beautiful and stylish as in a five-star hotel. And which one to choose is up to you.
No. 5. Bed with lifting mechanism
Under a large double bed there is as much space as in an average closet or compact closet. If the apartment is small, it would be stupid not to use this space. Of course, you can take a model where there are several drawers under the bed, but this approach does not allow you to make maximum use of the under-bed space. It will not be possible to open such drawers in every bedroom, and finding such an option is not so easy.
It’s better to take a bed with a lifting mechanism: once you lift the base with the mattress, a huge (about 1.8 * 1.9 m and 25-40 cm deep) storage space appears in front of you. You can store both bedding and out-of-season clothes there - there is enough space for everything.
Depending on what load is expected, one or another lifting mechanism is chosen:
- gas lift. The mechanism is equipped with a shock absorber in the format of a cylinder, which is filled with air or other gas. The load capacity depends on the pressure level. The base of the bed with such a mechanism is easy to raise and lower, everything is done very smoothly, you only need to give a small initial push. A gas lift can lift a weight of about 100 kg or more, it is intended for all types of beds and mattresses; this is the mechanism that is used with transformable beds that fold up against the wall. The service life of the mechanism is long (about 70-90 thousand raising/lowering cycles), the only negative is the cost;
- The spring mechanism is built on the use of metal twisted springs. Service life – about 20 thousand raising/lowering cycles. The mechanism works clearly, but over time it may become difficult to lift, and the springs may need to be replaced. Springs can withstand less load than gas lift;
- the manual mechanism on hinges does not require the presence of any shock absorbers - all efforts to raise and lower the berth rest with the person. Such a mechanism is often installed in folding beds; it is cheap, but requires good calculation of your own strength.
