Guide to interior styles: historical, national and modern

Historical

Classic

Classics are in fashion now. A balanced composition, rich accessories, clear zoning of rooms into relaxation, work and dining areas are characteristic of the classics.

The classics are dominated by pastel colors (white, blue, gold, pink) to create coziness and a space where you can relax and unwind. Bright colors can be used in decor and accents, but they should not be flashy, but deep. The luxury of the classics is reflected in the decoration. On the ceilings you can see stucco, on the walls - wallpaper with patterns and monograms or decorative plaster, Venetian. The floor is most often covered with parquet or laminate, which imitates herringbone parquet.

Wooden furniture with luxurious leather upholstery or textile upholstery with the addition of lurex will look good. Massiveness is welcome.

An apartment or house decorated in this aesthetic will still be relevant in 5-10 years. But, if you are a lover of rigor and asceticism, it is better to take a closer look at what styles there are in the interior.

Art Deco

Art Deco always attracts attention and finds its fans.

Main features: bright decor that matches each other, harmony, lightness and elegance, but not minimalism. Art Deco combines exoticism and primitive art, so you can see animalistic objects next to sculptures and images of magnificent ladies. Also one of the most popular symbols is the “rising sun”, or the “Egyptian semicircle”.

For Art Deco, you can choose any colors, the main thing is their combination with each other and naturalness; acidic shades will not work. Choose light colors and paint the rest of the interior picture against their background. Exotic species are used as finishing materials (ivory, crocodile and snake skin), this looks luxurious, but is reflected in the cost of repairs. Art Deco requires investment.

Among the furniture you can see rounded objects with handles, chrome or wood.

Eclecticism

Eclecticism arose at the beginning of the last century as a historical necessity: then different types of styles were often mixed in the interior, and a separate direction appeared, which today we call eclecticism. A relaxed mixture of different directions, usually two or three, their harmonious combination in shape, color, size of elements, and a sufficient amount of decor distinguish eclecticism.

It is impossible to single out any specific colors characteristic of eclecticism; designers choose light walls, but this is done only to create a convenient background. You can also find quite extravagant things, for example, a green sofa or armchair, a bright painting, curtains with an unusual pattern.

The walls are covered with wallpaper or ceramic tiles, the floor is laid with parquet or laminate, and you can also find stucco decorations. Furniture can be from different “stories”: futuristic, classical, and minimalist.

It is impossible not to note the importance of decor. It is he who makes this direction distinctive, alive and dynamic.

Neoclassical

As you might already understand from the name, interiors in the neoclassical style are known as the “daughter” of the classics, but in a more modern version. But it would be wrong to assume that by removing stucco from the ceiling, your classic room will become “neo-”. Let's figure it out.

Main features: lightness, grace of shapes and lines, strict adherence to proportions and a minimum of decorations.

Light colors predominate (beige, milky, light gray and blue). Dark deep tones can also be found as accents, for example, wine, green or blue. Neoclassicism is characterized by painting in pastel colors and finishing with fabrics, flooring made of wood or porcelain stoneware.

The furniture remains massive, but pomp is no longer so relevant; it is better to abandon a large amount of carving and choose something strict, sophisticated and minimalist.

Modern

It emerged at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, preaching the rejection of historical experience in creativity and the development of something unconventional. It was also reflected in interior design and became popular.

Art Nouveau strives to combine practicality and artistry. Rounded shapes, curved lines and ornaments are characteristic features. The emphasis remains on natural colors, but modernity also loves brightness, so colors can be safely combined.

New textures and materials have found their application in modernity, but there is still a place for traditional ones: for example, walls can be covered with wallpaper and parquet can be laid on the floor. Functional cabinet furniture is suitable, but with the obligatory presence of a “zest”: elegant fittings, frosted glazing of cabinets, smooth lines.

    A short guide to bedroom design: from zoning to decoration

Materials

Today, furniture production is constantly improving, new materials of higher quality are appearing. Most Popular:

  1. Aluminum. It is actively used to strengthen areas with increased load, as well as for the production of profiles and decorative elements. Youth furniture and kitchen sets are often made in high-tech and techno styles, which are characterized by the use of metals.
  2. Wood. Natural material is susceptible to rotting, so its qualities are improved in various ways: boiling, impregnation, and others. It is environmentally friendly and looks beautiful.
  3. Chipboard, MDF. Used to imitate or replace natural wood. They are durable, moisture-resistant, and cost much less than wood.
  4. Composite polymer materials. They do not fade in the sun, do not absorb moisture, are impact-resistant, and easy to care for.
  5. Glass. The material can withstand significant loads and is safe. Either tempered glass or laminated with a special film is used. Particularly interesting furniture is made from bent material.

For the upholstery of modern furniture, they try to use materials that do not require special care: leather, its high-quality substitute, flock, tapestry, courtesan. In addition to all this, improved coatings, impregnations, paints, and films are used. New adhesives are used for a seamless connection. Thanks to modern technologies, the impeccable appearance and durability of furniture are achieved.

National

Scandinavian

Scandi, as fans affectionately call it, can be described in three words: simplicity, functionality, comfort. In Russia, this trend is becoming increasingly popular, and most likely the reason for this is the availability, including items from the IKEA store, because it was this Swedish brand that brought Scandi to our realities.

Scandi is characterized by a lot of light, large windows, often without curtains, so that there is even more light, simplicity of lines and shapes, a lot of free space and few furnishings, cozy textiles. Green indoor plants play the role of decoration and add freshness.

Color scheme: white, white and white again. It is considered the main one. The reason for this popularity is simple: in the northern countries there is little sun and natural light, so the decor is dominated by white and other light shades (gray, blue).

The walls are decorated with paint or simple wallpaper, the floor is usually wooden or laid with minimalist tiles. Furniture can be found made of wood, as simple as possible, without frills. Hand-made items are not uncommon.

Arab

Part of the family of oriental styles. From the name it is clear that he was born in the Middle East.

The luxury and richness of the East, a lot of decoration and gilding, carpets and carved wood, arches and rounded openings, colorful tinted glass lanterns are reflected here.

The colors use a lot of gold and shades of red, yellow and pastel shades.

Wall covering - wallpaper with patterns or plain wallpaper, often accentuated with wood or another color. The floor is paved with wood or ceramic tiles with unusual patterns. In the rooms you can find low couches and poufs (they replace sofas), rounded beds, and wooden furniture with carved patterns.

Japanese (wabi-sabi)

It is also part of the oriental family, but is the complete opposite of Arabic. The Japanese, as a pragmatic nation, striving for harmony and advocating functionality, have created a style that can be described in the same words.

The basis is functional furnishings and equipment, since an integral part of Japanese culture is the efficient use of resources, compactness, the use of natural materials, and a penchant for minimalism.

Most often, Japanese interiors are monochrome, with light shades of wood and textiles predominating. This choice is also explained by the fact that neutral colors minimize the feeling of disorder, which is unacceptable in Japanese culture.

The Japanese prefer to use natural materials, which is reflected in the decoration. You can often see light wooden panels on the walls; the base is wallpaper or smooth plaster. The floor is laid with laminate, parquet or tiles. Furniture: simple and functional, compact, light, most often made of light wood.

Sliding doors and partitions are also typical.

French

It is softness, elegance and sophistication. Rooms in French aesthetics are filled with pastel colors and beautiful decorations: paintings, candles, vases, mirrors.

Main features: smooth lines, stucco, pastel shades and vintage items. Residents of France love flea markets, where they sell the same vintage with which they decorate their homes.

Color range: pastel colors (beige, white, soft pink and blue, pale yellow and olive), also a lot of metallic gilded color.

You can wallpaper the walls in a neutral color or choose a light pattern, and make the floor wooden. You won’t find massive or simple things here; vintage items are often used, for example, a dressing table, a bedside table or a cabinet, which are always elegant.

Decorative elements play an important role. In such a room there should be photographs and paintings in frames, vases and mirrors, candles in exquisite candlesticks.

English style

In English houses they use a lot of noble wood, bookcases with open shelves, accessories, some clutter, since furnishings are not usually placed near the walls to free up space.

Today, the English trend has moved away from the Victorian era with its dark colors and has “crossed to the light side.” The color palette is warm and muted. You can use shades of brown, red, yellow, warm green and gray, blue colors.

The walls are covered with light wallpaper, plain or with a light pattern. It is better to lay wooden parquet or premium artificial wood laminate on the floor. The furniture is usually massive. Wardrobes, sofas, shelves, tables. It is believed that an attribute of an English home is a chair with “ears” - protrusions on the sides of the high back. It's warm and pleasant to sit in, it protects from drafts.

American style

It is a derivative of two cultures: Eastern and Western, brought to the new continent. Some consider it a “parody” of classic European apartments, but, despite the external similarity, they put practicality at the forefront.

The color range is varied, but natural colors predominate. Terracotta motifs, ocher, and gilding are popular.

Depending on what goal the designers are pursuing, they use modern materials, such as wallpaper on the wall, and wooden panels, with which they can create an imitation of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” The floor is usually covered with parquet or laminate. Almost all the furniture looks quite simple and is made of wood; low chairs and a four-post bed are typical.

Types of furniture

The model range is so diverse that it is impossible to classify it on a single basis. Furniture is distinguished according to several criteria: purpose, functionality, materials used, design. Each of them has strengths and weaknesses.

Transformer

Folding chairs, stools, and folding beds were known to our ancestors. Transformable furniture has become especially popular now. Most often it is used at home when arranging children's and small-sized rooms.

Characteristic features of furniture in English, overview of varieties

The most popular transformers: sofa beds, chair beds, wardrobes, tables. The functionality of furniture in a modern style depends on the design features. Models 2 in 1, 3 in 1 are in demand.

Flaws:

  • need for folding/unfolding;
  • high probability of breakdown due to the large number of moving parts;
  • repair difficulties.

When choosing a transformer, you need to take into account that the structure must withstand a large load, so you need to personally check the strength of the mechanisms. The more complex the device, the more often it fails.

Built-in

DIYers have remodeled niches for cabinets before, but they often didn't look their best. Today, built-in furniture is handled by professionals, so it successfully competes with traditional furniture. It is installed in the hallway, living room, bedroom, and on the balcony. Advantages of built-in products:

  1. Production according to individual sizes. The built-in design is ideal for rooms with complex layouts in which it is impossible to install traditional models.
  2. Solidity. The design does not have the usual partitions; their role is played by the walls, floor or ceiling. Thanks to this, a tight fit is achieved, every centimeter of free space is used effectively.
  3. Sustainability. The parts are attached directly to the walls, which eliminates distortion.
  4. Space saving.

Built-in furniture masks imperfections in walls or floors. The surfaces are hidden behind the product doors. The same applies to communications: if they spoil the interior, it is best to hide them in the built-in closet.

Such furniture also has disadvantages. The disadvantages include: the cost of individual design, the inability to move, the complexity of installation and dismantling.

Modular

A furniture constructor is a convenient way to assemble an individual set. A modular system is a set of items made in the same style from the same materials. They combine well with each other and are easy to move and rehang.

Advantages:

  • suitable for most interiors;
  • items can be purchased as a set or separately;
  • easy to assemble into a single structure and disassemble if necessary;
  • ease of transportation.

Modular furniture is made in square or rectangular shapes, so it is not suitable for some styles (Baroque, Art Nouveau, Art Nouveau). In addition, rarely does anyone use a complete set; most often, several items are purchased. The disadvantage is the likelihood of errors in the joining of modules.

Materials for manufacturing European furniture and main features

Soft

This variety includes items for lying and sitting: sofas, armchairs, sofa beds, ottomans, ottomans, couches, sofas. Main details: frame, soft filling, upholstery, mechanisms. Furniture is produced in different forms: from the simplest to the most fancy. It can be placed in any part of the house, including the balcony, kitchen and hallway.

The design of sofas and armchairs can be stationary or folding. In the latter case, different mechanisms are used: accordion, dolphin, book, eurobook, tango, pantograph. Each of them functions differently, so when choosing upholstered furniture, you must definitely check the ease of use and dimensions when unfolded.

Various materials are used for upholstery: from textiles to artificial and natural leather. Thanks to modern technologies, they are characterized by increased wear resistance and hypoallergenicity. They are easy to care for, since the fabric is protected by a special coating from dirt and damage.

Modern varieties of styles in the interior

Loft

The main features of a loft are concrete surfaces, old brick, large spaces and high ceilings, open communications of a house or apartment (pipes, water pipes and similar things).

The loft is dominated by natural shades: gray and brown, the colors of brick and concrete.

This is that rare case when the less finishing, the better. Deliberate negligence and unkemptness will add color. Concrete surfaces or old brickwork can be left untouched. The floor can also often be found in concrete or made from specially aged parquet. Furniture should look as if it was put together randomly, without trying to find something original, and at the same time be completely unique. In loft apartments, almost art objects are often used. For example, construction pallets assembled into a bed or table.

High tech

It is considered the most technologically advanced area. High-tech is the interior of pragmatists and techno-lovers who cannot imagine their life without modern gadgets and devices that can eliminate the need for a person to do anything himself. Even raise the blinds.

Main features: correct geometric shapes and proportions, use of transformers, monochrome and a lot of space.

The color scheme is monochrome, gray-white or brown predominate, with one bright accent possible that will attract attention.

In high-tech, plastic, glass, and everything “man-made” and artificial are welcomed. The furniture is only very functional and technologically advanced. At the same time, it is important that all household appliances be built into it, since, despite modernity and the craving for gadgets, high-tech does not like to display them at all.

Minimalism

Key Features: A no-frills concept that minimizes the number of items in a room. This explains the presence of transformers, since there are no fewer requirements for the functionality of the premises.

Monochrome is preferred, most often white and gray are used as a basis, but you can also see brown and light blue.

Minimalism uses a lot of glass and plastic, and cannot do without wallpaper, paint and traditional laminate. Furniture should be functional. At the same time, it always looks simple; glass and plastic are often used to make it seem invisible due to its transparency.

Country

Many people classify country music as a historical group, but this is not entirely true. The history of country music does not date back to any particular date and did not begin in a specific era.

Main features: simplicity and originality, functionality, a minimum of modern attributes, cozy atmosphere and romanticism inherent in village life.

Country style is suitable for soft natural shades, brown, green, light beige, blue. Loud tones are not used.

Wallpaper is preferred for walls, perhaps with a floral pattern or a checkered pattern; wooden panels are also often found. The floor is wooden, the ceiling is simply plastered. Furniture: wooden furniture made from aged or bleached wood is often found; upholstered furniture is a must; it symbolizes the comfort and attractiveness of a rustic lifestyle, when you can “sink” into a chair and forget about the hustle and bustle.

Accessories play a big role: there should be a lot of textiles, paintings, photo frames, fresh and dried flowers.

Distinctive features

A few centuries ago, beautiful furniture was a luxury that only a wealthy owner could afford. Today it is a mandatory attribute of any room. You can distinguish furniture in a modern style by several criteria:

  1. Materials. In addition to wood, artificial and synthetic raw materials are used. It is durable, easy to maintain, and resistant to stains. It is characterized by a rich color palette and imitation of various textures.
  2. Appearance. Since furniture was previously available only to a select few, its status was emphasized by lush decor. Nowadays, laconic forms and finishes are a priority.
  3. Design and dimensions. Items are created taking into account ergonomics. They are more comfortable and compact, easy to place and rearrange.
  4. Functionality. Unlike traditional ones, modern models perform several tasks. This saves usable space without sacrificing comfort.

Modern furniture uses various devices and mechanisms necessary for transformation and operation. It is distinguished by a wide variety of forms. In addition to traditional models, triangular, oval and products without clear outlines are popular.

As for the shortcomings, there are not many of them. A relative disadvantage is that there is too much variety of options; a person who does not understand modern designs may get confused. Furniture made from inexpensive materials can wear out and become deformed over time.

Furniture salon advertising

A furniture store, of course, needs a bright sign. Just don’t regard it as the main advertising tool. The salon only serves as a showroom. The client can come, touch the sofa, table or chair with his own hands, and evaluate the quality of workmanship.

Other tools are responsible for attracting visitors:

  • leaflets;
  • brochures;
  • social media;
  • website, etc.

It is important to remember the target audience here (return to the beginning of the article). Flyers in the subway are unlikely to attract buyers of luxury sofas. Printing sales brochures is not always justified when selling cheap chairs. I tell you about my experience in preparing brochures here.

Sale of furniture through non-standard showrooms

I picked up this idea from Western marketers.

Furniture companies enter into contracts with residential building developers. They provide complete furnishings for a new building. The result is a kind of showroom. A buyer comes to choose an apartment and sees not empty “concrete boxes”, but cozy, comfortable housing. Everyone benefits from such a partnership:

  • The developer sells housing faster.
  • The company sells not just one sofa, but a batch.
  • Clients do not waste time traveling to stores and are not tormented by the question “how will this look in my apartment?”

Buyers do not see empty rooms, but a furnished new building. The probability of a transaction and the average check are much higher.
