Calm lining: what is it? Differences from analogues, characteristics, features of production and use of lining in repairs

Question from a reader of our portal: Calm lining. What it is? How to choose?

Answer: Calm lining is a wooden, smooth, dry board with a special lock that ensures its reliable fixation.

This modern sawmill product has a number of advantages compared to other finishing materials, and therefore is in great demand both among builders and amateur craftsmen. It is wear-resistant, easy to maintain and is an environmentally friendly material. Calm lining looks very beautiful and modern; many houses and baths today are decorated with it or a more improved version - euro lining.

What is Shtil lining

Shtil lining is a dry, thin, smoothly processed board that is connected by grooves and tenons. It is worth noting that when connected, such lining does not form a gap, all fastening joints are invisible and a perfectly flat surface is created.

There is a special groove along the entire length of this material, which serves to provide ventilation. Calm lining has a fairly attractive aesthetic appearance and it is not necessary to cover it with any additional finishing materials.

As a rule, the lining is produced with a width of 9-14 cm, a thickness of 1.2, 1.4 or 2 cm, and the length of the tenon is 0.4-0.5 cm. The length of the profile can be from two to six m.

Size Standards

Unlike the classic options, Shtil lining has a slightly larger variety of sizes:

  • for domestic sawmill products, the profile width is 90...150 mm, thickness - 12...25 mm;
  • for foreign-made materials, the width reaches 80...140 mm, and the thickness - 12.5...21 mm.

The length of the finishing board in both cases remains the same and varies from 2000 mm to 6000 mm. Thanks to this, there are far fewer butt joints on the lined surface, making the finish look smooth and seamless.

Advantages of Stil lining

The main advantages of calm lining are the following nuances:

  • Beautiful attractive appearance.
  • Retains its original appearance for quite a long time.
  • Condensate drainage.
  • By creating complex various designs, a minimum of waste is obtained.
  • All elements are firmly fixed.
  • It has a fairly simple installation method.
  • Does not lend itself to natural deformation.
  • Has a high level of strength.
  • It is considered an environmentally friendly and absolutely safe material for health.
  • Loyal cost.

Species for lining calm

Calm lining can be made from coniferous or hardwood. Each type of wood has its own characteristic features and nuances, which means that the characteristics of the Shtil lining differ from each other.

Below are the most popular and suitable types of wood for the manufacture of stihl lining and a brief description of the resulting lumber:

  1. Cedar is one of the most expensive and popular types of wood for making wall paneling. Cedar lumber is typically used for interior trim. Calm cedar lining has a fairly pleasant pine aroma and, thanks to the large amount of resins, is resistant to insects and rotting.
  2. Larch is one of the most common types of wood, which has high properties. Calm larch lining is often used to decorate baths, saunas, and rooms where there is often high humidity. The material made from this wood is not afraid of sudden changes in temperature and practically does not rot.
  3. Linden is a type of wood that is widely used to create calm lining. As a rule, this linden material is used for finishing work in the bedroom, children's room... Lining made from linden wood has a fairly delicate and uniform beige color and a pleasant aroma with a honey tint.
  4. Spruce is a popular wood for creating calm lining, which is used for exterior and interior decoration. Material made from this type of wood is not afraid of changes in temperature, humidity and is practically resistant to rodents.
  5. Pine is a type of wood that is widely used for making wall paneling. This lumber contains a large amount of resin and does not rot. It is worth noting that calm pine lining is more often used for interior finishing work.

How to choose?

To understand which lining to choose, just look at the list of main characteristics. It includes dimensions (length, width, thickness), wood type and grade. Types of Shtil lining differ in the number of defects. “Extra” is considered the best, followed by “Prima”, A, B, C. Sometimes there are intermediate options: AB or BC. The further from the beginning of the Latin alphabet, the lower the grade. The best boards are characterized by uniform coloring, perfect adherence to all dimensions and the absence of noticeable defects. The lower the grade, the more knots, resin pockets or defects caused by mechanical stress (cracks, abrasions).

Choosing a calm lining does not always come down to assessing the budget and purchasing the most expensive category that fits into it. In some cases, designers deliberately choose boards with an increased number of knots for the sake of an interesting texture. For auxiliary rooms, you can use inexpensive lumber of a lower grade. To make the wall look attractive, it should be painted. By the way, it is better to order professional coloring, directly from the manufacturer.

Fastening the lining calm

Experts recommend fastening the wall paneling with self-tapping screws or using clamps. Nails should not be used to fasten this lumber, as they can cause damage, namely:

  • Damage the appearance of the material;
  • Damage part of the material;
  • If the Shtil paneling dries out, it will not be possible to carefully remove it from the nails.

Before you begin the fastening process, you need to see if the rear groove of the lining is wide, then you can use self-tapping screws, and if it is narrow, then it is better to place the fasteners in a tenon.

When fastening the Shtil lining, it is necessary to use self-tapping screws with additional zinc coating to make them resistant to corrosion. Also, the self-tapping screws must have a countersunk cone-shaped head and a special tip.

Calm lining, which is secured using clamps, has a more aesthetic appearance.

Such fastening elements have several advantages:

  • You can dismantle the material without the slightest damage;
  • Made of high-strength material that securely fixes the lumber;
  • They are produced in various sizes and you can easily select the appropriate size for a specific lining.

Application of lining Shtil

Calm lining is widely used as finishing inside and outside.

Most often, this lumber is used in the following industries:

  • Wall cladding.
  • Ceiling trim.
  • Zoning of space.
  • As a floor covering.
