How to make an artificial fire in a fireplace with your own hands, simple methods

Many people like to look at the fire in the fireplace. The sight of a flame calms you down, allows you to relax and immerse yourself in your own thoughts. However, it is not always possible to install a real fireplace in your home; this is especially problematic for city residents, whose stress level is very high and who, more than anyone else, need an effective way to relax.

Fortunately, we can build a false fireplace in our apartment, which will adequately replace a real analogue. At the same time, it can have a real fire if biological fuel is used, or an imitation of fire in a fireplace, which you can also make yourself. In this article we will talk about how to make an imitation of fire in a fireplace with your own hands, and we will analyze the most popular methods.

Raised fireplace with a skillfully filled firebox

water vapor

One of the most difficult ways to imitate fire is the smoke illusion.
The result will delight everyone every time water vapor starts to smoke from the fireplace. For the design you will need: three ultrasonic fog generators, a fan, a container for liquid, water purified from impurities, RGB lamps and a box in which to place it all.

A fireplace in the interior will help fill your home with comfort. Such an elegant and multifaceted design solution will never go out of style. A floor-standing fireplace will unite all family members around it every time and help create a favorable atmosphere. We wish everyone warm evenings.

Realistic simulations

One of the most realistic options for creating an imitation is the so-called fire box. To create this effect, you need to buy LED lamps, preferably red, yellow and blue. You can choose a small mirror or foil as a reflective surface. Also, for this effect you will need fabric or scraps of it (silk). The so-called fire will be placed in a box.

At the first stage, we decorate the base (box) itself, after which we proceed according to the following step-by-step guide:

  • Place the fan in the box;
  • LED bulbs are located and fixed next to each other;
  • The space around the fan is filled with flaps.

Such a box with fire is placed inside the fireplace portal and allows you to reproduce a fairly realistic effect.

You can also simulate it using an aquarium. In more detail, you will need to prepare an aquarium of such a size that it can be installed in the fireplace. After this, a garland with LEDs is placed and secured inside the aquarium, and the container is filled with water. When you turn on the garland, the effect of blazing water will be created, which looks very original.

The interior of the aquarium can be decorated with shells, stones, algae and other elements at your discretion.

The category of the most realistic and difficult to implement variations includes creating the illusion of a flame burning in a hearth using steam. To generate steam, you will need to buy 2-3 fog generating devices (ultrasonic).

You will also need to prepare a fan, a reservoir into which water will be poured, a frame for placing the simulation and RGB lamps.

Devices that generate fog are installed in the inside of the box along with a fan, then we place lamps, and on the generators we install a prepared reservoir for filling with water. This effect is very realistic, but recreating it is quite expensive.

A fireplace in the interior of your apartment will become a real home and fill the living room and bedroom with comfort. A floor-standing fireplace can be either wall-mounted or island-mounted, corner, depending on your wishes and preferences. A false hearth is quite easy to install, it has small dimensions and optimal weight, and some models can be moved from place to place. To simulate a flame, you will need mostly inexpensive materials at hand, and the design itself does not require the construction of an additional foundation or a chimney.

Such a home will allow you to have cozy family evenings in the company of friends and family over a cup of warm tea.

Types of devices depending on installation method

An electric fireplace for an apartment or private house can have different shapes and configurations, which affects the way it is installed:

Wall-mounted electric fireplace in the interior

  • classic - completely imitates the structure and appearance of a real heating device. This type of electric fireplace is the most expensive. Not everyone can install it correctly, so it is best to hire professionals for installation;
  • corner models - placed in the corner of the room, which saves space; built-in appliances - placed inside the wall. Installation of these models occurs during major repairs or construction. You also need to carefully consider how maintenance will occur during operation of the device;
  • wall models - most closely resemble a painting depicting a flame. Many devices are made in high-tech style and are best suited to modern room design.

Biofireplace is a stylish interior solution

In rooms where it is not possible to equip a classic fireplace, their “fire brothers” will be especially relevant. They will create a unique comfort and atmosphere that promotes relaxation and intimacy.

The mobility of the bio-fireplace is noteworthy: it can be moved to another location at any time. Often, ceramic decorative firewood, cones or stones are placed in the hearth, which successfully emphasize and complement the picture of naturalness.

You can now buy a wide variety of original models of bio-fireplaces on the market, including high-tech ones, so everyone can choose a bio-fireplace for themselves. Both monumental floor models and small ones that easily fit on a small coffee table find their owners. The fireplace is guaranteed to bring a special mood to the room.

Options for placing a homemade fireplace decoration

Decorating a room with a fireplace can be done in very different ways. The pseudo-fireplace is not “tied” to the chimney or hood, so its installation is permissible anywhere - near the wall, in a corner, in the middle of the room, as well as in any niche.

Near the wall

A structure placed near a wall usually becomes a zoning element or a “starting point” from which the rest of the interior is built. It is advisable to install the object near a completely empty wall, in its center.

Before installing a wall decorative sample, you must make sure that the wall is level.

In the corner

The corner product has a triangular, pentagonal shape. It does not interfere with movement around the room and allows you to use space that is usually left unattended for storing things, books, and souvenirs.

A corner decorative hearth is ideal for rooms with a small area, as it takes up little space.

Ostrovny

This option is performed extremely rarely - its installation will require a lot of space, approximately in the middle of the room. This is a suitable idea for spacious studio apartments and combined spaces. The false fireplace serves here to zone the area.

Its peculiarity is that you can approach the heat source from any direction, but you will not notice any discomfort or tightness.

In a niche

Placing it in a niche allows you to decorate such an unfortunate architectural element. To “construct” such a hearth, a minimal amount of material will be required, since the borders are already there - all that remains is to glue on the decorative details.

In this case, the fireplace will highlight the harmonious design of the room.

Imitation of fire for a false fireplace

If you approach your work with passion, even a decorative hearth will look realistic. But the key difference is the absence of fire. The easiest way to bring the look closer to the real thing is to put a few logs of firewood in the firebox. There are more realistic options:

  • Built-in bio-fireplace. It works on the principle of an alcohol burner. After ignition, a real flame appears in front of you. Alcohol produces virtually no smoke or odor, making it great for indoor use. To integrate into the portal, you need to choose models that are closed on all sides. They prevent fire.
  • Digital photo frame. Gadgets with support for GIF animation and background sound imitate the movement of flames and the characteristic crackling of coals. But large format frames are expensive, and standard seven-inch screens are only suitable for mini-fireplaces.
  • LED Strip Light. Bright orange or red lighting is installed in the podium or along the lower contour of the combustion niche. An improvised fire comes to life if you place a transparent container filled with water and glass balls inside. Light is refracted in glass beads. The water sways at the slightest vibration and creates the effect of movement.

Step-by-step instructions for making an electric fireplace portal

The question arises, how to make an electric fireplace with steam with your own hands? Let's figure it out. Models of electric fireplaces are different and they are made from different materials. For example, such as: plasterboard, stone, noble wood, chipboard, plywood and many others.

To create an electric fireplace with your own hands, no special skills are required, the main thing is to strictly follow the instructions

In order to create a portal for an electric fireplace with your own hands from plasterboard, no special skills or any specialized tools are required. Do-it-yourself cladding of the electric fireplace portal is done in this case from finishing tiles, although other options are possible.

Before making a portal you should:

  • choose the place where the electric fireplace will be installed;
  • buy or create an electrical element for the hearth;
  • draw a drawing;
  • prepare the necessary materials and tools.

In order to make a portal for an electric fireplace from plasterboard, you will need the following materials:

  • metal profile, for creating a structure and fastening drywall;
  • plasterboard sheets;
  • putty diluted with water;
  • primer;
  • mesh for seams;
  • insulation;
  • pre-created drawing;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • metal corner for securing corners;
  • facing tiles;
  • furniture board;
  • special glue.

We previously wrote about making portals for electric fireplaces with our own hands and recommended bookmarking the article.

Required tool:

  • spatula;
  • screwdriver;
  • stationery knife;
  • sandpaper;
  • metal scissors.

After preparing the necessary tools and materials, you can begin to work:

Stage 1. Preparation of metal profiles and drywall. Cut according to sizes that were thought out in advance. A drawing was built on their basis;

Cutting drywall to the required sizes, which are planned according to the electric fireplace design

Stage 2. Installation of the metal profile according to the drawing;

Fastening metal profiles, cut to size, into the overall structure according to the drawing

Stage 3. Fastening the drywall with self-tapping screws to the metal profile;

Fastening prepared sheets of drywall to the metal structure of the future electric fireplace

Stage 4. We completely cover the frame with plasterboard according to the drawing;

Covering the metal with plasterboard and forming a recessed portal for installing a firebox

Stage 5. Carefully and carefully seal all seams and corners with a putty mixture;

Applying putty to a structure covered with plasterboard sheets

Stage 6. After the putty has dried, you should go over it with sandpaper to remove all the unevenness;

Sanding the portal wall for an electric fireplace with sandpaper to eliminate unevenness on the surface

Stage 7. We install a corner metal profile at the corners on top of the drywall;

Fastening the corner metal profile for better fixation of corners and strengthening the structure

The facing tiles are fixed to the primed surface using glue. In this case, the bottom of the portal is lined with brick

Portal with a fireplace installed in a recess, but with unfinished tiling

Portal with top-mounted tabletop and fireplace. The tabletop in this case is painted yellow. You can choose the most suitable color for the interior of the room

Stage 11. The portal for the electric fireplace is ready.

The wall decoration is completely completed and the electric fireplace, made by hand, fits harmoniously into the interior of the room

Artificial plasterboard fireplace

Here we will look at how to make a portal from gypsum plasterboard, designed for an electrical device with two functions:

  • imitation of fire in the fireplace;
  • electric air heating.

The installation of such devices has its own characteristics. For example, it is necessary to ensure air access to the heating element of the device; for this purpose, a gap of at least 30 mm wide must be maintained between it and the walls of the future false fireplace. The back wall of the device should be at a distance of 50 mm from the wall. Based on these requirements, the portal for a decorative false fireplace must have certain dimensions and niche depth.

To work, you will need a set of tools that every drywaller has. We will not list it all, we will only name the main ones: a screwdriver, metal scissors and an electric jigsaw. The latter can be replaced with a sharp shoe knife. Materials for a false fireplace made of plasterboard:

  • the plasterboard sheets themselves are 12.5 mm thick. If subsequent tiling with ceramic tiles is planned, then the material must be moisture-resistant;
  • galvanized UD profile. Designed for installation of gypsum boards on walls;
  • CD profile. Differs from the previous width;
  • dowel-nails for fastening to the wall;
  • self-tapping screws

An artificial portal from gypsum plasterboard, including a corner false fireplace, must be made starting from the wall to which it will be attached. To do this, the drawing, previously drawn on paper, must be transferred to the wall, only on a scale of 1: 1. You must draw on the wall surface accurately, observing the dimensions and angles, using a black marker or pencil. Then, placing the pre-cut UD profiles clearly along the lines, secure them one by one to the wall with dowels.

Having prepared jumpers of the required length from the CD profile, we begin to assemble the frame. To make an artificial fireplace, take a narrower UD profile for the racks and crossbars of the frame and fasten it to the jumpers with self-tapping screws. In this case, it is necessary to maintain the vertical and horizontal, controlling the process with measuring instruments. Subsequently, the entire structure is reinforced with a wide CD profile, as shown in the photo:

At the next stage, the structure is partially sheathed with gypsum board and the ceiling of the niche is formed. The front part of the frame is also strengthened.

Next, the bottom of the niche is made from the CD profile where the electric fireplace will be installed. The rest of the structure is covered with sheets of plasterboard. It should be noted that the finishing of artificial gypsum board fireplaces is carried out according to the same rules as wall cladding; there are no special requirements. When the casing is finished, an electric heater with a flame effect is inserted into the niche and connected to the network.

The assembly process is shown in more detail in the video:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=vaM8PKZNoy0

As you know, the surface of plasterboard sheets can be finished in many ways. For example, cover it with textured porcelain stoneware, then the structure will look like a fireplace made of artificial stone. In our case, gypsum stucco, priming and painting were used for decoration (see photo above). In the case when you need to attach a false chimney to a decorative fireplace, you cannot find a better material than gypsum board.

Then you will have to assemble an inclined frame from profiles up to the ceiling and cover it with plaster using the same principle. As for the design of the chimney of a decorative fireplace, it may match the lining of the portal, or it may differ, at your discretion.

Option one

We simulate fire in the fireplace ourselves

Imitating fire for a fireplace will take very little time.
To do this, first of all, we will need to make a small lamp, which will perform the main function - the combustion effect. Materials for making a dummy:

  1. Scraps of white silk;
  2. Reflective halogen lamps - 3 pieces;
  3. Medium size bowl;
  4. Big fan.

The container for the future flame is a pre-prepared bowl

It is important to remember that in size it should be the same size as the fan

Having selected a container suitable for its size and characteristics, you need to attach a fan to its bottom. It must be secured in such a way that when turned on, the air flow is directed outward. In the same container, it is necessary to fix halogen lamps, of which there should be three.

This is necessary for uniform illumination of our dummy. The axis of fastening the light bulbs must be strictly one. Light bulbs are located above the fixed fan and along all edges.

Imitating fire in a fireplace without heating, if all these rules are strictly followed, will be simply amazing!

Rules for the safe operation of electric fireplaces

This device is quite safe, but you still need to follow certain rules so as not to create a fire hazard in the house:

  • install the electric fireplace at a distance of at least 1 m from flammable objects;
  • It is prohibited to install installations in rooms with high humidity;
  • do not install the electrical appliance on the street, balcony or loggia;
  • When the fireplace is operating, do not touch its body, which may become hot;
  • If you will not use the device for a long time, unplug it;
  • do not block or cover the electric fireplace, especially the ventilation openings in the body;
  • do not leave the device turned on unattended, especially if no one is at home;
  • You cannot open the body of the electric fireplace or make repairs yourself;
  • Do not allow foreign objects to get inside the housing.

What are they needed for

Many will ask the question: why are such dummies needed? Well, firstly, it's a matter of aesthetics. And secondly, you don’t need deep knowledge of stove equipment to notice the difference between a fireplace with an electric heating element and a wood-burning fireplace.

Due to the absence of smoke and rapid heating of the room, electric fireplaces are an advantage when compared with a wood-burning fireplace. But with all this, a certain naturalness of the hearth is lost, its charm and charm are lost. If you add dummy firewood to such a design, the picture of the fireplace changes radically.

This situation is especially relevant for a city apartment, where installing a real fireplace is simply impossible.

Decorative firewood for fireplaces

To give the fireplace a finished look, it is necessary to “place” firewood and coals under a cold fire. On the windows of specialized stores there is a huge selection of decorative firewood made of plastic or ceramics. Such dummies accurately replicate the texture of dry or partially burnt wood. An imitation, purchased or made with your own hands, will turn the hearth into the center of home warmth and comfort.

In order to obtain greater realism, lighting with red filters is installed under the wood display. More expensive versions of decorative firewood provide internal lighting with a non-repeating flicker cycle.

Placing decorative firewood

Particular attention must be paid to the placement of firewood in the fireplace niche. You can do this yourself and give the hearth a more aesthetic appearance; it will become more believable. To place a fake log in the fireplace niche, you need to decide on the installation option. Imitation firewood looks quite impressive in combination with other decorative elements, such as stones or candles

Place logs in the form of a “house”. Arrange the wood in a cone. In a chaotic order, as your imagination suggests.

Imitation of firewood looks quite impressive in combination with other decorative elements, such as stones or candles.

If for some reason it is impossible to place artificial firewood in the depths of the firebox, you can place a separate emphasis on the firewood by placing it outside the hearth.

In addition, you can build a firewood shed with your own hands, into which decorative firewood is placed.

With a harmonious selection of stove equipment and decor for it, you can turn the hearth into an object of great attention. The combination of firewood and fire, regardless of whether they are natural or artificial, will add unique charm and comfort to any interior.

Review of popular brands

Modern manufacturers of electric fireplaces surprise with a wide variety of models. High functionality, interesting design, long service life - that’s what these options combine. There are several popular brands that create designs that you need to get to know better.

Helios (Helios)

The models of this company have a laconic design without unnecessary decorative elements, which is suitable for both classic and modern interiors. Inside the fireplaces there are artificial elements that allow you to create a high-quality imitation of flame. Basically, the brand is engaged in creating built-in options.

Athena

Fireplaces of this brand are always distinguished by their luxurious decorative design. White, brown and black classic options can decorate an expensive interior, which contains many wooden elements. Imitation of fire and smoke creates an atmosphere of real warmth and comfort in the room. It is worth noting that the company produces quite powerful options in terms of heating.

Sherwood

Strict lines and laconic forms - these are the qualities that models from this company combine. Basically, the brand is engaged in creating products in a luxurious English style, using carved wood as the base. Fireplaces from this company will become a real decoration of the room.

Max

Fireplaces are distinguished by a rather original design in comparison with the usual options. The absence of many decorative components does not at all spoil the design of the products

Alex Bauman

Models with a flame effect from this company can immediately attract your attention. The use of classic fragments and expensive design of fireplaces can decorate any living room. The models are decorated with carvings, which look sophisticated and expensive.

Firestar

The fireplaces of this company are an ideal example of a successful combination of classic and modern. The versatility of the models lies in both functional features and design. They are suitable for decorating classic and modern interiors. The bright and precise effect of live flames and smoldering coals looks quite realistic.

Novara

Fans of modern trends in interior design should take a closer look at the models from this company. Basically, manufacturers produce embedded systems that have a simple but stylish design. Thanks to an interesting idea, it seems that you are looking at a large and lively fire in the fireplace.

The final stage is securing the structure

It should not only look as natural as possible, but also be additionally secured. To do this, we use several scraps of pre-prepared fabric. For strengthening, it is best to use white silk, since throughout its structure and color, it fits harmoniously into the overall picture of the dummy and conveys all light effects well.

The shreds need to be secured next to the fan, so when it operates, they will perform rhythmic vibrations.

This completes the imitation of fire in a false fireplace. In order to reproduce this effect, you simply need to connect the fan to the network. The advantages of this visualization are guaranteed safety, high realism and minimal production time.

Creating a fireplace

A dummy fireplace is not intended to heat a room. For this function, there are special electronic hearths of various sizes, shapes, and materials. For those who need a fireplace as a design solution, decide on the type of fireplace and consider fire imitations. Let's start with the simplest ones.

Fairy lights

You will need the garland itself, a source of energy and decorative decorations for it in the form of logs. It is better for the lamps to flicker in yellow, orange and red colors.

We wrap the branches with foil without gaps, and glue lace on top of the foil. Let it dry for about a day. Afterwards, we cut and carefully remove the tree branches. We form a circle from the stones (if desired, the stones can be painted any color), lay out a garland in the middle, and form the resulting lacy branches like a bonfire. Turn on the garland and the logs will sparkle with glimmers of fire colors. This is an amazingly simple and effective way to create a dummy fire in a fireplace.

Candles

You can use candlesticks, candelabra, or simply arrange large candles according to your design. We emphasize that this option is not suitable for every light fireplace, because the flames can leave a black mark.

There is an interesting way to effectively present candles in the fireplace. To do this you will need several medium, neat logs. In each we cut out 2-3 recesses the size of a small candle in a metal stand. The result will be a sophisticated imitation of a fireplace fire with minimal investment of money and time.

Salt lamps

Special lamps made of salt crystals look great in a false fireplace. A salt lamp will be an interesting embodiment of a real fire in a fireplace. The main “disadvantage” of this design solution is the high cost. But there is a big “plus” - salt crystals will benefit the health of the whole family.

LCD screen

Putting a screen in a fireplace is a rather expensive solution. The main difficulty with this replacement for a real fire is installing the screen. The image of the flame will dance elegantly and crackle soothingly in the fireplace portal.

Several mirrors placed in the fireplace at different distances and at different angles will help increase the effect of the fire burning on the screen. The screen image will perfectly imitate fire, and the mirrors will create an illusory effect of a three-dimensional image.

If you prefer more interesting solutions to your interior design, then you will have to make some efforts. Let's look at how to make fire more realistic and fascinating with your own hands.

Woodpile made of cardboard or real wood with LED lamp and fabric fire

To make your own logs you will need cardboard, glue, scissors, paint, and a brush. We form logs from cardboard, paint them in the color you like, lay them out in the form of a well and glue them together. A well made from real wood is created a little easier: we take prepared logs and glue them together with construction glue.

For the fire you will need an LED lamp socket, randomly flickering in different colors (it would be ideal to combine red and yellow colors), a lampshade, a light, uniform lightweight fabric that transmits light, four strong wires from 15 to 30 cm long.

We insert the lampshade and fix the woodpile on top, fasten the wire to the logs, and attach the other ends to each other. We fasten the fabric over the wire. Turn on the LED and enjoy the resulting small fake fire

Theater fire

A very impressive type of artificial flame. For it you will need the following elements: a silent small fan, diodes of different colors (ideally red, yellow and blue), a reflective surface (this can be fragments of a mirror, foil, etc.), scraps of silk of different sizes and shapes, a small box for everything and place it.

The box should be decorated, then:

  • install a fan in it;
  • place the diodes next to each other;
  • attach the finished scraps next to the fan

The fire will turn out to be alive. All that remains is to place the box in the portal and enjoy the beautiful view with a cup of aromatic tea in your hands and in good company.

Aquarium as an imitation of fire

The play of water and light is always fascinating. You can use this successful ensemble in the fireplace instead of a fire. Prepare the following equipment: an aquarium of any shape and size (the main thing is that it fits into the fireplace), a fiery LED strip, water. Place a tape on the bottom of the aquarium and pour water into the aquarium. Decorate the structure at your discretion with shells, tree branches, pebbles, glass, pebbles, etc.

General description of popular methods

One of the most difficult methods is to create artificial fire using generated water vapor, so we’ll start with this method.

Steam

To create a steam unit inside your raised fireplace, you will need certain components and electrical skills. You can look for a ready-made solution, but finding it will be difficult.

To build a steam generator we will need the following components:

  • small quiet fan;
  • DMX controller and DMX decoder are devices that allow you to transmit digital data and balance the operation of all generator systems;
  • light-emitting diode (LED);
  • ultrasonic fog generators;
  • pure water;
  • suitable box, boxing.

Installation diagram for creating an imitation of fire from steam

The principle of operation of the steam system is very simple. Fog generators are installed in a suitable box or box. Pure, distilled water is poured into them, which, under the influence of a fan and an ultrasonic vibration generator, begins to gradually evaporate. Note that the evaporation of water occurs at room temperature, and the steam itself is cold. The rising steam from the evaporation of water is illuminated by an LED lamp, which creates the effect of a real flame in the fireplace.

To make the fire look more realistic, a diaphragm should be installed over the entire structure. A diaphragm with holes of different diameters will allow you to vary the speed of the air around you, and therefore create more realistic flames.

If we take a deeper look at the processes taking place, we should remember Bernoulli’s law, which tells us that the smaller the hole, the higher the speed of air flow.

Good to know: False fireplace with candles, creating a candle fireplace with your own hands

The components are selected according to the main characteristics of the fireplace, while at the same time, at the assembly stage, we plan the final result. You can buy such elements in stores that sell electric steam fireplaces, or in companies that sell equipment for concerts; there are also steam engines here. The design diagram can be easily found on the Internet.

Professional steam installation

After assembling the elements together, we need to get a machine that works on the principle of cold glow discussed above. This imitation of fire will be very impressive, very similar to real flames. Pay attention to the dimensions of the system and the fireplace insert; they must match each other.

It is worth noting that Real Fire professional technologies are based precisely on this principle. The main device in such devices is an ultrasonic steam generator, designed specifically for use in a fireplace. It is this that creates the steam that is illuminated properly. The vapor density at the bottom is greater, which means it glows brighter, reminiscent of a real flame. Higher up the color becomes duller, which allows you to create a smoke effect.

Textile

Imitation of fire through fabric is actively used in theatrical productions, so this option can be proudly called “theatrical”. This method is also great for home use, so we will consider it.

To make an imitation of fire in a false fireplace with our own hands, we will need:

  • a certain amount of white silk fabric;
  • halogen lamps with reflectors;
  • small but powerful fan, preferably quiet;
  • several color filters with the main colors of fire - red, orange, blue;
  • container or box for assembling all the elements together.

Using fabric to create artificial fire

Assembling the system is simple, the following step-by-step instructions will help you with this:

  1. We select a box that is suitable in size and decorate it properly on the outside.
  2. We place a fan or cooler in the box, which can be taken from the computer.
  3. We attach halogen lamps with colored filters above the fan and point them upward. The distance from the filters to the lamps should be a couple of centimeters.
  4. When placing color filters, we adhere to the following sequence - blue in the middle, and red and orange at the edges. With this arrangement, the fireplace fire will be bright, rich and natural.
  5. We cut the silk fabric into various pieces, which we attach to the box on different sides of the fan. To achieve a high level of realism, cut the silk into triangles.

Good to know: Imitation of a fireplace in the interior of a living room, original design

That's all, the homemade imitation of fire in the fireplace is ready, all that remains is to launch it by connecting the lamps and fan to the network, test it, and then modify it. Pieces of fabric imitating flames look very natural, but the main thing is that they are of the required length to fit into the firebox of a false fireplace.

TV

One of the simplest and most popular ways to make a fire in a fireplace almost real is to use a TV, tablet, photo frame or LCD display. The only thing that immediately puts you off the method using a liquid crystal screen is the price, because such equipment costs a certain amount of money

You can save money by purchasing a display specially designed for this purpose. It is sold in the same place where decorative fireplaces with electric filling are sold. The display already contains a recording of real fire, you just have to install it and turn it on.

For greater realism, you can use optical systems made of light filters. They will help make the imitation more lively, rich in volume. It will be a pleasure to admire such fire.

Decorative system for installation in an apartment

Another option for improving the fireplace lighting with your own hands is to use mirrors. It's called Pepper's ghost, and is used by many theaters and magicians. By placing mirrors on the walls of the firebox and its bottom at different angles, you can give the artificial flame some volume. In this form, your hearth will look like a real one.

The most subtle connoisseurs of beauty use holographic systems that create full-fledged 3D copies of fire. Modern technologies make it possible to turn a two-dimensional image into a three-dimensional one. Optical systems and LED lights, working together and properly configured, can create very realistic images in a small space. You can even make the image depth greater than the fireplace insert. This method is very impressive, but too expensive and unprofitable.

Salt lamp

Not only an effective, but also a useful method for creating an imitation fire in artificial fireplaces is the use of salt lamps. Such devices have recently appeared on the market, but are already in high demand due to their excellent characteristics and beneficial effects on the human body.

A salt lamp is made from a large piece of salt in which a lamp containing a regular light bulb is placed. During operation, the light bulb heats up and heats up the salt lamp, which begins to emit negative ions into the environment. By connecting with positive ions, which are abundant inside our homes, because... they come from working home appliances, they neutralize them. This creates an environment that is comfortable for human life, which you will certainly feel when you install a similar lamp in your home.

A good option for a salt lamp for a fireplace

Installing a salt lamp in a fireplace is not difficult, but you will need some budget to purchase it. Choose fireplace lamps with matching colors, or purchase several lamps at once to place them together to form a fire pit.

Fairy lights

An interesting way to illuminate the fireplace insert is based on the use of garlands, ordinary New Year's garlands that every family has. Of course, you will have to modify the garlands a little to make them look more realistic, but there are no particular difficulties here.

Garland in the form of a fire for the fireplace insert

To assemble a suitable structure you will need the following materials:

  • several small tree branches;
  • food grade aluminum foil;
  • a small piece of lace or soft white fabric;
  • several real stones;
  • glue;
  • the garland itself, capable of flickering and having a suitable color background, for example, yellow or red.

Creating an imitation fire from a garland looks like this:

  • Tree branches are completely wrapped in foil. The lace is glued onto the resulting silver sticks. The glue takes about a day to dry, so we wait until everything is securely connected. Now carefully cut the resulting lace case and take out the branches from it. The imitation firewood is ready.
  • We place stones in a circle in the firebox of the false fireplace. We place the selected garland in the resulting circle, and on top of it we install improvised firewood made of lace. The result is a small fire.

All that remains is to plug in the garland and enjoy the pleasant flickering of the fire.

By the way, you can always use garlands with LEDs to illuminate the interior of the fireplace. Very original, cheap and simple.

This method will make it very easy to get a decent picture of the fire inside a dummy fireplace, but you can do it even easier by placing candles in the firebox.

Candles

It is not recommended to use real candles in an artificial fireplace, much less light them, so it is better to purchase small lamps in a similar shape and install them in the fireplace. If your dummy is made of brick, then you can also use the classic version.

Using candles to decorate a fireplace insert

The use of real candles when lit is not so popular, since they smoke when burned. If you don’t light them, then there will be no flickering or light from the fireplace. At the same time, from a design point of view, such a design for a false fireplace is acceptable, since such a design creates an atmosphere of coziness and comfort.

If you decide to use candles to decorate the fireplace insert, place other suitable decorative accessories, such as candelabra, around it.

In conclusion, it is worth saying that it is not difficult to make an imitation of fire in your home fireplace, and besides, there are a number of methods from which you can choose the appropriate one. At the same time, the achieved result will certainly please you when you feel all the warmth, sincerity and beauty emanating from your fireplace.

Christmas garlands

Preparing branches

  • tree branches of various sizes;
  • aluminium foil;
  • lace. It can be easily cut from an old dress;
  • stones (several pieces);
  • glue;
  • Christmas tree garland with a background color of red, orange or yellow. The best solution would be to use a flickering garland.

The simulation structure is assembled as follows:

  • wrap the branches with foil without gaps;
  • coat the lace with glue and attach it to the branches. Next, wait until they are completely dry;
  • Next, you should carefully cut the lace case and remove the blanks from them;
  • after that, in the hearth of stones, we lay out the stones in a circle;
  • We place a garland in the middle of the resulting circle, and bring the cord and plug out;
  • We place the resulting “lace” firewood in the manner of a fire.

Stages of forming a fire

Making a heater

As mentioned above, it is better to use some ready-made factory heater, manufactured in compliance with all safety requirements. But if you are well versed in what is written below, then go for it!

All types of electric fireplaces use heating elements of various types for heating. It could be:

  • spiral in a quartz tube;
  • biospiral on ceramic bases;
  • nichrome spiral elements.

That is, even an iron spiral in a ceramic shell is suitable for our purposes. Only such spirals may need several pieces so that the total generated power is 1-2 kW.

Naturally, all this needs to be properly mounted on some kind of frame, insulated, grounded and taken care of with electrical wiring that could withstand the expected load. For the best distribution and preservation of heat, it is necessary to equip this entire structure with a reflector in the form of a kitchen stove hood, for the manufacture of which you will need a frame made of galvanized steel corners and stainless steel sheets.

A heater made in this way can be additionally equipped with a temperature controller and even sensors that turn on the device automatically. You can always find them in the store.

Let's start making a fireplace from boxes with our own hands

Taking into account the prepared sketch and dimensions, we draw out the details and elements of the fireplace on a laid out sheet of cardboard. It will consist of a portal, a base and an upper shelf. Now let’s talk in more detail about the creation of each detail.

A rectangular box is cut out from several separate pieces of cardboard and glued together using adhesive. To be sure of the strength and durability of the false fireplace, use stiffening ribs that are built inside the box. Now let's decide on the method of attaching the portal to the base of the false fireplace. You can use two options: either install the base inside and fix it to the bottom and walls, or fix it on the surface of a completely sealed box. All you have to do is choose the most convenient and suitable method.

Let's start creating the portal

To make it, you can choose one of the methods: either make it with a solid back surface, or a frame version. We suggest you design a fireplace portal with a solid wall. The front part is constructed either from sheet solid cardboard with a cut-out middle part, or from separate strips. The cut out middle will act as a firebox. Just don’t forget to carefully measure everything and draw it out so that the window turns out perfectly smooth and neat. The edges of this window will be the side inner walls of the firebox. The ceiling for it is constructed separately according to the dimensions that you obtained at the first stage of the creative process. It should be attached to the side walls and back surface using tape.

To fasten the main part of the structure and the portal, it is necessary to measure the middle in the lower plane of the fireplace and make marks at an equidistant distance on both sides, along which the portal will later be installed and attached to the base with tape.

Pay attention to the seams of the resulting structure: they should be carefully taped with masking tape, onto which water-based paint will adhere well

The decorating process is the most creative stage of creating a fireplace and the most enjoyable work, during which the structure acquires a beautiful, marketable appearance. Use wide molding and stucco elements for decoration, with which you can emphasize the elegant and sophisticated style of the fireplace. They should be attached with glue. Then the structure should be coated with snow-white water-based paint, and a tone should be applied to the stucco elements using a pre-selected color scheme. If desired, the stucco molding can be given a golden hue. Afterwards, the fireplace is coated with a colorless water-based varnish and, after drying, installed in the chosen place, decorated with a decorative vase, flowerpots, figurines or other decorative items. Don't be afraid to experiment, and the result will be truly unexpected and unusual!

What is a false fireplace and why is it needed?

It is impossible to install a full-fledged fireplace in a city apartment. This is due to the lack of chimney pipes, as well as the inability of the floors to withstand heavy loads. As an alternative, an imitation of fire is used, which can be done with your own hands without special skills.

Decorative fire has the following advantages:

  1. Affordable price. All costs are associated only with the purchase of materials.
  2. Decor versatility. A false fireplace can be used for a whole year, and if desired, it can be modified by changing its appearance.
  3. Stylish appearance and combination with any interior styles.

Types of decorative fireplaces

A wide selection of ready-made designs are available for sale. If you are not considering making an electric fireplace with a live fire effect yourself, you can choose one of the following solutions:

  1. Cardboard or foam portal. It is the most affordable product. In addition, you can create it yourself with minimal time and effort. Considering the flammability of materials, it is impossible to place a fire source in them. It is also not recommended to install heavy decorative objects on the structure, because Styrofoam will not be able to support them.
  2. Fireplace made of plasterboard. Making an imitation of fire from this raw material is quite simple. The material is easy to process and is inexpensive. Unlike foam or cardboard, drywall is fire resistant. This allows you to use candles to simulate a flame.
  3. Plywood option. It features a stylish design and environmental safety. But in order to preserve the appearance of the portal and extend its service life, you need to isolate the material from moisture.
  4. Brick and stone fireplaces. These types are highly decorative and durable. To create a hearth, you need to have basic skills in laying bricks or stones. You will also need to spend a considerable amount on purchasing materials. Before installing the structure, you should make sure that the flooring can support such a weighty structure.

Fuel and heat output of a biofireplace

The hearth is refueled with special fuel, which is based on ethanol - ordinary alcohol. But, since the free sale of purified ethanol is prohibited, denatured alcohol is used as biofuel. It does not pose a danger to the environment. The combustion of ethanol is accompanied by the release of heat, carbon dioxide and water vapor. These substances are relatively harmless, but you still need to open the window a little and periodically ventilate the room.

Biofuel for biofireplace

It all depends on the size of the bio-fireplace, because a large floor-standing bio-fireplace, during active use, is capable of releasing a significant amount of carbon dioxide, in contrast to such a small option, the volume of CO2 released is comparable to normal human breathing. The combustion process of denatured alcohol looks beautiful and forms spectacular tongues of fire.

Biofuel is mainly produced in canisters with a capacity of 2.5 and 5 liters. On average, 0.36 liters of fuel are consumed per hour of combustion. It follows from this that a bio-fireplace with a 2.5-liter heating block will burn continuously for approximately 10 hours. Since the efficiency of the heating unit is more than 95%, almost all of the generated heat will remain in the room. The thermal performance of the biofireplace heating unit, which runs on denatured alcohol, is approximately 4 kilowatts per hour (equivalent to two ordinary electric heaters).

Several arguments in favor of the environmental friendliness of biofireplaces

  • clean, environmentally friendly raw materials – bioethanol – are used as fuel;
  • it is fed for combustion into a patented burner, which will not allow the liquid fuel to evaporate;
  • the bio-fireplace flame does not emit soot or smoke;
  • biofuel is not dangerous to human health and the environment. It does not lead to allergic reactions and is non-toxic;
  • biofuel combustion occurs with the release of a minimum of carbon dioxide (approximately as much as is formed from the combustion of two paraffin candles);
  • biofireplaces can be used for aromatherapy (suitable sets are sold).

Several arguments in favor of the safety of biofireplaces

After analyzing the types of fireplaces for safety, you can make the following rating:

  • The first place is occupied by all types of electric fireplaces, since they are not sources of open fire.
  • Second place among fireplaces in general and first among open fires, where a real flame is formed behind the bio-fireplace. The fire from the burners in it is reliably protected by a fireproof screen. It must be remembered that it is dangerous to keep flammable objects closer than half a meter from any source of fire.
  • Gas fireplaces took third place. In terms of safety, they are superior to conventional ones, but we must not forget that gas is also an explosive substance.
  • In last place in terms of safety is the traditional fireplace. Sparks, soot, a faulty chimney damper are all risk factors. In addition, it ranks first in terms of labor-intensive installation and maintenance - its owner will have to regularly remove ash and clean the chimney annually.

You cannot neglect safety rules when using all types of fireplaces and any equipment in general!

Effects

Modern artificial fireplaces not only replicate the appearance of natural options, but also have some interesting effects.

The aroma of a burning fireplace

The main task of a false fireplace is to simulate a fire in an apartment. To improve the realism of sensations when in contact with such a structure, it is necessary to provide the room with the aroma of burning wood.

To do this, you will need to purchase any suitable incense or set fire to thin splinters, having previously secured the room from ignition.

Crackling of dry logs

An indispensable attribute of the realism of a simulated fire is the characteristic sound of crackling firewood. This can be achieved by recording the sound of a fire or downloading a ready-made audio file. Having chosen a natural volume level, you need to turn on this sound on your MP3 player and install it in the overall circuit of the fireplace. When the structure is connected to the electrical network, the crackling sound will start automatically.

Firewood imitation options and materials

In stores you can find many options for such products. They can be made of plastic or ceramic. Any imitation, purchased or made with your own hands, is designed to give realism to an artificial hearth to help you feel all the charm of home comfort and warmth.

Imitation of firewood or coals, made of plastic, has a very simple operating principle. Typically, such objects are illuminated with red light bulbs.

It is also possible that the light bulb is located inside each element. Of course, this is not entirely realistic, but still.

More expensive fireplace models are characterized by a flickering pattern or imitation of artificial flames, which occurs due to a special mechanism in which elements rotate around the lamp, alternating transparent and shaded sectors. This type of lighting can be located either behind a dummy of firewood or inside it.

The exact same lighting system can be used to achieve a burning effect, using real coal, which is placed in the fireplace niche.

In this case, the dummy and coals are illuminated from the bottom. Imitation of plastic firewood and coals, of course, is not ideal, and it has its own errors.

To hide all the shortcomings as much as possible, artificial firewood with lighting is placed as deep as possible in the fireplace niche, and the hearth is decorated with a fireplace grate, which serves as a mask for the shortcomings.

In expensive models of electric fireplaces you can find several techniques for simulating fire. To make the picture realistic, they use not only dummies of firewood, but also mirrors with strips of foil or ribbons in which the backlight lights are illuminated, creating the illusion of flames. In addition to everything, the models are equipped with various functions, steam supply, which imitates smoke from a fire, and a sound device that reproduces sounds similar to the crackling of firewood.

If your financial capabilities are not enough for such items, then as an option, you can try making dummies of firewood with your own hands.
