Eyelets - calculate their number, the width between them, and how much fabric will be needed for them

Curtains with eyelets are a rather difficult interior element to create. The difficulty lies not only in installing accessories on the sewing material, but also in the need to make calculations. In fact, the distance between the eyelets can be calculated based on already existing formulas. They were created largely experimentally, however, the considerable experience of professional seamstresses can be trusted. This article will describe the algorithm for calculating the interval in the middle between the elements of the fittings, and also provide a specific example, which allows you to see the real numbers.

How wide should curtains be?

The ideal fold is 1:1.7, but everyone has different tastes, so below we offer a conditional ratio of the serial size of curtains with standard-length curtain rods: Curtains 140 cm wide (each) for curtain rods from 180 to 250 cm long Curtains 180 cm wide (each ) for cornices from 220 to 300 cm long

Taking measurements

In order to calculate how often the eyelets will be placed on the curtain, you need to know exactly the width of the fabric.

To do this, the fabric for sewing must be measured with a measuring tape or a thick tape measure, spreading it on a flat horizontal surface. In this case, accurate data is necessary, and therefore it is better to measure twice - this will help to avoid inaccuracies and oversights in the manufacture of this interior element.

The second measurement that needs to be made is to find out the diameter of the metal rings themselves.

Before measuring them, they need to be correctly selected for a specific cornice. They must be larger than the crossbar, so it is recommended to choose those that are 8-10 mm larger in diameter than the pipe on which they will be installed. For example: a pipe can be measured with a caliper, and if the result is 16 mm, then the fittings are selected with a diameter of 25. If the pipe is 25, they can be selected with a diameter of 35 mm.

Another caveat: when measuring the grommet, you need to consider the inside diameter, not the outside, as the two numbers will be different.

After taking measurements, you can begin to carry out calculations.

Correctly calculating the fabric

The larger the window, the more fabric will be needed to decorate it. But excessive maximalism using 4 times the amount of fabric relative to the width will not give the desired effect, giving a massive appearance. The length is chosen based on individual preferences, especially when you select curtains for a nursery or kitchen. For such a room, you can choose a length of 2 meters, because maintaining its standard size is not so important.

Advantages of using eyelets

  1. Many people like the presence of a rustling sound when closing and opening curtains;
  2. A beautiful and uniform wave will not be disturbed even by washing;
  3. The fabric from which the curtains are made is less susceptible to abrasion, unlike fastening in another way;
  4. High-tech or minimalist design will be ideal with such curtains.

How to choose eyelets for the cornice?

It is important to choose the correct diameter of the inner circle of the eyelet

.
The hole must exceed the diameter of the curtain rod by at least 1.5 cm. This plays a decisive role, because if the hole on the grommet is too small, the curtain will get stuck on the curtain rod
.
eyelets,
often becomes the choice of material.

How to calculate fabric?

Let's take a closer look at how much fabric is needed for curtains with grommets. When taking window measurements is completed, you can begin choosing fabric in a specialty store. This process in itself is quite fascinating. The value of eyelets is primarily in the uniform waves, which increases the amount of fabric. As a rule, it will be enough to follow the following calculations: width * 2.5-3. Those. for a curtain with a width of 3 meters you will need a window of 1.20 meters. With a more economical approach, such graceful waves may not be possible. For example, a 1.5 meter window will require an average of 4 meters of fabric.

Advantages of grommet curtains

Having curtains attached to a grommet actually has distinct advantages considering their valuable future appearance. The ease and noiselessness of moving the curtains along the eaves will not leave anyone indifferent. A simple mechanism will ensure that the fabric never gets tangled, stuck or sagging. In addition, in order to form beautiful symmetrical fabric folds, you will not need to adjust the fabric with your own hands. Plastic rings protect the fabric from unwanted deformations. It is also positive to admit that with such curtains it will never be difficult to wash them, since removing and hanging the curtains with eyelets on the curtain rod is much easier than manipulating inconvenient hooks and eyelets.

Formulas and sequence of calculus

If you have the appropriate data, you can start calculating using the formulas below. What data is needed to make calculations:

  • internal diameter of 1 unit of fittings;
  • curtain width.

Sequence of calculation operations:

  1. How many round metal rings do you need? Calculated using the formula: curtain width in meters * 6.
  2. Calculating the remaining centimeters of fabric on the sides: 3 cm X 2 sides = 6 cm.
  3. Calculation of the remaining footage from the first to the last hole. It is calculated by the formula: the width of the curtain is the remainder of the centimeters on the sides (i.e. 6 cm).
  4. Calculation of the footage on the canvas that the holes occupy. It is calculated by the formula: internal diameter of fittings * by their number (pcs.).
  5. Counting the total gap in the middle of the holes. It is calculated by the formula: the remainder of the material from the first to the last ring is the distance on the canvas that the metal rings occupy.
  6. Counting the interval in the middle of the holes. Calculated by the formula: number of round metal rings - 1.
  7. Calculation of the gap between units of fittings. Calculate using the formula: calculation of the gap on the canvas that the holes occupy / by the number of intervals between them.

The result obtained is the width of the distance between the fittings.

Eyelets and their varieties

Before sewing curtains using eyelet fastenings, you need to make sure that you definitely want to do it yourself. So eyelets, what do we know about them? This is usually the name for a round mount (but other options are also possible), plastic or metal with a design that creates the illusion of using wood, leather and other materials. Rings can also be of different shapes: oval, oblong, triangular and suitable for children's rooms.

Example

For a simpler explanation of how to calculate everything in practice, an example with specific data will be given below.
The initial data, such as the internal diameter of the metal ring and the width of the blade, will be taken as 25 mm and 4 m, respectively. The procedure for carrying out calculation operations:

  1. Calculation of the number of round metal rings required: 4 m * 6 = 24.
  2. Calculation of the remaining centimeters on the sides 3 cm x 2 = 6 cm.
  3. Calculation of the remaining fabric from the first to the last hole. 4 m (400 cm) - 6 cm equals 3 m 94 cm.
  4. Calculation of the gap on the canvas, which is occupied by holes: 25 * 24 pcs. = 600.
  5. Calculating the footage of material in the middle of the holes. 3 m 94 cm (3940) - 600 = 3340.
  6. Counting the number of gaps in the middle of the holes. 24 - 1 = 23.
  7. Calculation of the interval between eyelets. 3340 / 23 = 145 or 14.5 cm.

14.5 cm is the width of the distance between the eyelets.

As can be seen from the information presented in this article, in order to calculate everything correctly, you only need a tape measure or a measuring tape, a working calculator (on your phone or on your computer) and compliance with the step-by-step algorithm described above. By the way, as in the case of taking measurements, it is advisable to carry out calculations according to the above algorithm twice. It’s easy to get confused in the variety of numbers, and one wrong result can ruin the entire fabric prepared for sewing.

It is recommended to write down all the results obtained during the calculation process - this will help in marking the processed fabric and will greatly simplify it.

The fold factor is important!

To determine the amount of fabric required for sewing curtains, first of all it is necessary to take into account the fold coefficient, which we have already written about above, however, we will repeat it.
The coefficient showing how many times the actual width of the curtain is greater than the visual width is called the fold coefficient. The fold coefficient may vary.

Crease factor for tulle fabric

A good, suitable fold factor for tulle fabric is 3, and the minimum decent one is 2. For example, for a 2 meter cornice you will need 4 - 6 meters of tulle.

Fold factor for curtain fabric

For thick curtain fabrics, the fold coefficient can be 3, minimum 1.5.

That is, if we multiply the width of the curtain (width of the curtain rod) by the fold factor recommended for this type of fabric. We will get the actual width of the curtain.

Don’t forget that the beauty of a curtain depends not only on the beauty of the design of the fabric material, its texture and plasticity; the play on the folds is an equally important detail. Therefore, you should save on fabric footage in moderation. In addition, the more fabric, the better the protection from light.

Which fabric is best for curtains with eyelets?

In fact, absolutely any fabric is suitable here, either organza, or veil, or thick curtain fabric. It is desirable that it drape at least a little to create beautiful waves, but a complexly draped fabric will also look good in this case. One disadvantage of non-draping fabrics is that they will puff up (expand) downwards and will not look so aesthetically pleasing.

The bottom line is that density and drape are provided by the top grommet tape, which holds the fabric tightly on the curtain rod.

Example of curtains with organza eyelets

Don’t be afraid to experiment - in any case, this option is almost impossible to ruin if you install the eyelets correctly and calculate the correct amount of fabric.

In order to calculate the fabric, you need to understand what this calculation follows. You've probably seen how a torah hangs on the grommets on the eaves like a dense fabric and has practically no folds.

And there is an option when the folds fit beautifully, even when closed. It is based on the required number of folds that you should start calculating. If you like a lot of folds, then take more fabric 2 times the width of the cornice; if when closed you want a few folds and the curtains should be almost straight, then here you need to take 1.5 times more fabric. The coefficient for curtains with grommets is calculated in exactly this way. The higher the ratio, the more folds.

How to calculate the width of curtains with grommets

And you shouldn’t skimp on fabric and take just the width of the curtain rod if you know that you’ll be drawing the curtains every evening. If you need them only as decoration, then take the width of the finished curtain, for example 80 cm, and multiply by 2.

Example: if you have a cornice 1.5 meters wide, you will draw the curtains and you don’t need a lot of folds when closed, we calculate it like this - multiply 1.5 meters by 1.5 (coefficient). 1.5*1.5=2.25 meters.

In addition to this footage, add 10 cm to the seams for one canvas. If you have two canvases, add 20 cm. Total: 2.25 + 0.2 = 2.45 meters.

If you take fabric with a height of 2.8-3 meters, then this calculation is complete. With it you can already go to the store and buy fabric.

If your fabric is 1.5 meters wide:

The finished fabric width of 2.25 must be divided by 1.5 (the width of the fabric). 2.25/1.5=1.5. Round to the nearest whole number. In this case it is 2. As a result, we need to buy 2 strips of the required height.

Calculation of the length of curtains on grommets

The length of the torus on the eyelets is a little more difficult to calculate. But if you understand the principle, it will be easy for you to calculate any height.

  1. We always remember that such curtains always have a comb. It is 2-4 cm
  2. We must always step back from the floor if we do not want to wash them with a cloth every time or the design does not require it

First, use a tape measure to measure the entire height from the top point of the rod to the floor. It is better to measure in three places: in the center and along the edges, since the height often “jumps” and it is better to take this into account immediately. Next, we calculate using the following formula:

List of required materials and tools

To sew curtains yourself, stock up on: fabric, eyelets, scissors, a pencil, a special eyelet tape (can be successfully replaced with non-woven fabric or dublerin), an iron to glue it on and the ability to operate a sewing machine.

To make the wave uniform, you need to use eyelets in an even number.

Preliminarily determine the appropriate interval from one eyelet to another; this determines how deep the folds will be. To obtain relief, deep folds, you will need an interval of 22 cm, and for softer ones, 15 cm is enough. If the distance is large, the fabric, often dense, may sag, and less will not be noticeable. In the end, how many eyelets do you need for a 3 meter curtain? If we maintain an average spacing of 18 cm, we will need 16 eyelets.

Use for decorative effect

Curtains with a pattern and deep wave look different. If two identical curtains are used, the distribution of folds should be mirrored. The choice of indent along the top edge depends on the density of the fabric used. If you have a curtain made of soft fabrics, a fold at the top of about 5-6 cm with fastening rings of 3.5-4 cm will be sufficient.

In order to prevent curtains from sagging, on loose fabrics it is better to place eyelets close to the top edge.

What you need to install grommets

Eyelets are installed in sewing workshops, but this can be done at home with your own hands. To work you need to prepare:

  1. Ready ironed curtains.
  2. Eyelet tape made of hot-melt adhesive material.
  3. Threads.
  4. Tape measure.
  5. Pencil or felt-tip pen for fabric.
  6. Sharp scissors or a special punch.
  7. Iron.

Brief installation instructions:

  1. You need to purchase the required number of rings.
  2. Mark their location on the canvas.
  3. Cut with scissors or punch holes according to the markings.
  4. Place the halves of the plastic eyelet on both sides of the curtain and press until it clicks.

How to correctly measure the size of curtains?

Thus, in order to calculate the height of the curtain, you need to measure the distance from the hook attachment point to the bottom edge of the future curtain, and add 3 cm to this distance. For example: You want a floor-length curtain. We measure the distance from the hook to the floor - let it be 247 cm. Add 3 cm - we get 250.

General rules

When making calculations, you should remember one of the basic rules for sewing such curtains: the number of eyelets must be even. Why? Because it is precisely thanks to the even number that the side sections of the fabric will be positioned in such a way that they will not be visible from the room, that is, they will be turned towards the window.

If there is an odd number of them, the side sections will look into the room, and this will have a very negative impact on the appearance of the curtain and the design of the room.

When carrying out the calculation, you should also take into account that the optimal number of holes per 1 meter of width is the number 6. This means that to obtain the result you simply need to multiply the width of the panel in meters by 6. The resulting result will indicate the number of round metal rings that are needed to sew this interior element.

It should also be remembered that on average the distance between the holes in the fabric should be from 10 to 15 cm. It is partly determined by the diameter of the selected fittings. For optimal movement of the curtain on the rod, it is recommended to make an indent of 3 cm from the outer hole to the edge.

This value remains the same regardless of the width of the curtain.
