Kitchen window design ideas: real photo examples

The kitchen design plan does not end with the choice of finishing materials, suitable furniture and kitchen corner. After arranging the furniture, you should think about decorating the window in the kitchen. Curtains should highlight the advantages of the room, while being practical and functional. You need to decide what fabric they will be made of, what color, shape and size they will be. Curtains should match the style of the room, decorate it, and not interfere with the work process.

If the stove is located next to a window, you should take care of safety. In this case, it is better to choose shortened curtain options. Airy, short curtains will expand the space and visually enlarge the room. They are also suitable for kitchens in which the window sill is a continuation of the furniture; an additional work surface can be conveniently mounted into it.

Long curtains will add romanticism, luxury, and make the room cosy. If the kitchen is combined with a dining room, you can admire the stylish design of the room during breakfast, lunch and dinner. A stylish kitchen has a beneficial effect on the human psyche.

The size of the curtains depends on the size of the room and the width of the window opening. For small rooms, models made of light, translucent fabric, light in color are suitable. For a spacious kitchen, you can choose floor-length curtains made of thick material. The shade of the fabric and the pattern on it should be combined with the furniture and the overall design of the kitchen.

Features of curtains for the kitchen

Curtains in the kitchen are not only responsible for comfort. With the help of a certain style and color of window curtains, you can correct some shortcomings - for example, make a small kitchen visually more spacious with the help of simple, airy tulle, or visually raise a low ceiling due to vertical drapery.

Simple, discreet curtains make a small kitchen visually larger and lighter, while multi-layer curtains, on the contrary, make the interior heavier.

Other important factors in choosing a curtain style include:

  • interior style;
  • the presence or absence of a balcony door;
  • headset layout;
  • plate location;
  • purpose of the room (kitchen, kitchen-living room, kitchen-dining room, studio);
  • degree of natural light.

Taking into account the above, let's see which style is better to choose.

Short or long?

Short curtains are the most preferable option for the kitchen in most cases. They are practical, safe in close proximity to the stove and are the only possible solution when there is a work surface or dining area under the window.

Short curtains can be light, translucent or thick, completely blocking light. Short tulle or thin cotton curtains are suitable for interiors in a romantic or rustic style - country, Provence, shabby chic, etc.

What is shabby chic and how to apply it in the kitchen, you will learn from our article.

Despite all the practicality of short curtains, there are cases when it is better to give preference to long curtains and drapes. We will consider such cases in detail below.

  • If the kitchen is combined with the living room or dining room. To decorate a window in the living or dining area, it is better to choose curtains. They can be combined with curtains, roller blinds or Roman blinds.
  • If you need to hide an ugly plastic balcony door.

Features of kitchen window design: how to make the window sill the central element

You can often see photos of kitchens with a cozy and comfortable seating area near the window. Placing the so-called lounge area on the windowsill allows you to add personality to the kitchen and decorates the window area. This decor option can be used both in a large room (then you can use additional furniture elements) and in a small kitchen, which has a wide window sill.

Living decor on the kitchen window sill can be a great way to decorate a window without curtains

Instead of textiles, to decorate the kitchen window design, you can use decorative compositions that are placed on the window. At the same time, it is always possible to easily change them depending on the mood of the residents, the time of year and upcoming holidays. This could be a set of figurines, decorative ornaments, the replacement of which will refresh and diversify the interior.

It is important to consider that when the kitchen is located on the ground floor or near another building, the composition is not only visible to those inside the room, but is also open to prying eyes. Therefore, when arranging decorative elements, you should adhere to restraint and taste. This is important to do in order not to turn the window sill into a place where unnecessary rubbish accumulates, spoiling the overall picture of the kitchen interior.

A window sill filled with indoor flowers of different types, sizes and containers is a familiar picture to everyone

A classic way to decorate a kitchen window is to decorate the window sill with indoor plants. Properly selected flowers can not only emphasize belonging to any style, but also make the interior harmonious. In the warm season, if possible, flowers can be placed on the window on the street side.

This is interesting! If the window is small, it is better to choose plants of approximately the same height, planted in pots of similar style. On a large window, it is permissible to create a multi-level composition of plants.

Several identical plants placed at equal distances from each other look stylish.

Using fresh flowers on the windowsill: photo of window decoration

Before placing plants on the windowsill, you need to consider the following points:

  1. Distance from the sink or hob. Many plants may not tolerate constant exposure to dishwashing chemicals or hot grease splashes from cooking.
  2. Amount of natural light. It is necessary to know the characteristics of the plants that you plan to grow, because for some species excess lighting is not suitable, while others, on the contrary, require a lot of light for normal functioning.
  3. Temperature on the window. Many plants can die due to constant exposure to drafts. If there are cracks in the window opening, the cold air flow coming from the street can have a negative impact.

Hanging flowerpots with fresh flowers will add an original touch to your kitchen interior

To make caring for plants easy, it is better to choose unpretentious flowers with large leaves that are easy to wipe off dust from. It is recommended to place the following plants on the window in the kitchen:

  • aloe;
  • ficus;
  • hibiscus;
  • orchid;
  • crassula;
  • anthurium;
  • violet;
  • begonia;
  • azalea;
  • citrus trees.

Certain types of plants should be placed on the kitchen window

In addition to plants in pots, you can also use compositions from flower bouquets. Bouquets of peonies, tulips, roses and chrysanthemums look cozy. The most popular option is to make compositions from dried flowers - a flower that, even when dried, looks bright and beautiful all year round. It is welcomed when the flowers match the style of the tableware, so that these interior elements are in perfect harmony.

Types of kitchen curtains

Regardless of the length and type of fabric, the following types of curtains will look advantageous in the kitchen:

On the eyelets

The peculiarity of this type of curtain is its neat, even folds, which are formed thanks to the rings sewn into the fabric. They slide easily along the eaves, so they are one of the most successful solutions for a kitchen with a balcony door.

Curtains with eyelets are suitable for most modern styles - minimalism, scandi, modern classics, loft.

Curtains-cafe

Light and airy cafe curtains are an ideal solution for a country or Provence style kitchen.

You can sew them yourself. They are easily attached to a small cornice or directly to the sash using a stretched fishing line or rope.

Stained glass

One of the variations of cafe curtains in the design of romantic kitchens with rustic motifs is stained glass curtains, which are also called “hourglass” because of the way they are assembled.

They are mounted on a frame, so it is convenient to ventilate the room with them. They can frame both a window sash and an entire door.

Such curtains can overlap with the design of display cabinets and buffets.

With lambrequins

Lambrequin sets a romantic mood and is suitable for kitchens in a rustic or classic style.

This is just a decorative element that will give the interior an elegant look. Traditionally it is combined with tulle, but this option is not so relevant today. A single lambrequin, beautifully framing a window or doorway, can also look interesting.

Rolled

Roller blinds most often do not have a decorative function, although sometimes brightly colored or printed curtains can stand out in the interior. It's best to use them as a background.

Curtains or drapes in combination with roller ones can take on a decorative role.

Roller blinds can act as an alternative to a “bare” window without curtains, when curtains cannot be completely abandoned for various reasons - bright light during the day or the views of passers-by. For ascetic interiors in the spirit of minimalism, Scandinavian style or high-tech, this style is one of the most successful solutions.

Roman

It is not for nothing that this style is considered the most popular. After all, it is the most versatile among other types. Depending on the color scheme, Roman blinds can harmoniously fit into both classic and modern interiors.

Roman curtains, like roller curtains, can be combined with long curtains.

Blinds

The main advantage of blinds is easy maintenance. They can be washed in the bathroom or, without removing, wiped with a damp cloth.

The main disadvantage of blinds is their narrow stylistic focus. They give the interior a strict and office look. Therefore, for those who prioritize comfort, this option is not suitable. And in minimalism and hi-tech styles, blinds will be quite appropriate.

Pleated curtains

Something between blinds, roller blinds and Roman blinds. But, unlike previous options, the flexible lifting mechanism for pleated curtains is simpler and more enjoyable to operate. To fix them at the desired level, it is enough to smoothly pull down or push the blade up with one hand.

Curtains

Curtains are not appropriate in a small kitchen, but in a spacious kitchen-dining room, kitchen-living room or studio they may be necessary both for decorative purposes and to completely darken the recreation area.

Today, curtains without the usual tulle are relevant. Alone, like lambrequins, they can cope with their role perfectly.

Types of curtains for the kitchen

There are several types of curtains that are suitable for the kitchen.

Roman curtains

They are a lifting canvas that is lowered and raised using a special manual or electric drive device. Valued for the beautiful parallel folds that result when lifted. Fits into any style direction. Ideal for decorating narrow windows.

The minimalist cut gives the decor a noble laconicism and fully meets the key design trend aimed at simplicity and maximum convenience.

Roller blinds

They are wound when lifted onto a roller mounted above the window opening or in the upper part of the frame structure. Available in fabric, bamboo and plastic. Due to their ergonomics and compactness, they are suitable for kitchens of modest size.

Look amazing in spacious rooms. Can be combined with different types of curtains. They can serve as a color accent or be a background detail of the decor.

Austrian curtains

They are as practical as Romans and as elegant as French models. Usually one third of the window is covered. They delight the eye with soft horizontal folds. They can play the role of a lambrequin. Designed exclusively for classic interiors.

French curtains

They fall along the entire height of the window opening in many scalloped rows. Textiles intended for the kitchen are modernized and have the ability to be lifted.

They look inappropriate in brutal and stingy interior styles. Not suitable for small spaces. Requires extraction devices.

Filament curtains

They consist of many threads going down from the ceiling to the floor. They are resistant to dirt, easy to wash, and reliably protect from prying eyes.

  • Do not interfere with opening the balcony door.
  • They have good air and light permeability.
  • Can be used in space zoning.
  • There are no restrictions on style use.

If desired, they can be supplemented with curtains, tulle or blinds.

Japanese curtains

They resemble light mobile screens. The main elements are screen fabric panels, cornice and adjustment system. Beautiful, laconic, practical. They do not tolerate accessories.

  • They suit many styles, but cannot stand luxurious interiors with an abundance of decor.
  • They require a carefully thought-out color scheme.
  • They are considered the optimal choice for a spacious room with high ceilings and large windows.

Choice of color and pattern

Curtains can either enliven a monochrome and boring interior or ruin the overall impression. Therefore, it is important to guess not only with the style, but also with the color scheme, design or pattern. We will discuss in detail below what to combine textiles with and when you can use curtains as an accent.

To match the furniture

To establish color balance in the interior, textiles can be combined with furniture. For example, with the upholstery of kitchen chairs, armchairs or sofas in the kitchen-living room, or with the facades of the furniture.

You should not choose curtains that match the color of the furniture. Select one thing. If the curtains act as a color addition rather than an accent, then let them be a little paler.

To combine textiles with furniture in the overall design, choose curtains with an unobtrusive pattern with a single splash of color.

To match the walls

If the interior is already saturated with bright and active elements, then colored curtains in a rich shade will be superfluous.

In this case, it is better to choose neutral options to match the walls, which will blend into the overall design.

As an accent

Bright curtains or curtains with an active print will set the mood for a monochrome interior.

To ensure that textiles fit organically into the overall decor, support the pattern or color with other small details in small quantities - pillows on chairs, pillowcases and other decor.

Bright curtains in the kitchen without upper cabinets.

You can choose an existing color in the interior as an accent color and enhance its richness in the curtains.

A pattern or design can “collect” the entire color scheme of the interior and combine its multi-colored elements, while the print itself will make the decor more interesting. In other items, you can completely repeat the pattern or only individual motifs.

Photo ideas for modern window design

Design in this case allows you to show your imagination. The main thing is that the curtains or blinds are in harmony with the rest of the interior details.

Designing a window opening in the kitchen is not so difficult. Thanks to a wide range of curtains, tulle and blinds, it is possible to choose something that suits the interior and will harmoniously combine with other elements.

Fashion trends in curtain design

Fashion for interiors keeps pace with fashion for textiles. Interior exhibitions and works by famous designers set trends that are later reflected in the showrooms' offer. Let's see what current ideas have replaced outdated solutions.

  • Matte

One should distinguish between the noble and unobtrusive shine of rich and dense curtain fabrics (satin, velor, etc.) and cheap, thin curtains. Tulle that glares in the sun will make the interior look cheaper.

  • Conciseness

Better bright and monochromatic than colorful with a pattern. Prints are difficult to work with, and in such a small space as a kitchen, there is always a risk of overloading the interior with a complex pattern or design.

  • Carelessness, eclecticism and bold combinations

Curtains can match the color of furniture or decor, but an exact match of shades is no longer necessary. You can and should play with different intensities.

  • Current fabrics : for curtains - linen and cotton, for curtains - velvet, velor, satin.

  • Roll and Roman - relevant for all times. From a fashion point of view, these are perhaps the most win-win and “eternal” styles. Only the fashion for colors and patterns can change.

The current colors and shades of 2022 are earthy, amber-orange, classic blue, the whole palette of sand shades, yellow-green, gray-green, peach, olive, red clay color.

Roman curtains

Roman blinds differ from the classic model by the presence of a lifting mechanism that collects the woven fabric into even folds. The design is very beautiful, adds elegance to the kitchen and is completely suitable for modern styles. Roman blinds can hang on their own or be combined with tulle or curtains.

If there are few decorations in the kitchen and the colors are calm, then experts advise using a Roman blind with bright colors to make this element the main decor.

Not long ago, they began to use 2 types of Roman blinds: with frame and frameless installation methods. They are mounted at the same time, in a device without a frame there is no slatting - therefore there are no strict geometric lines; when assembling the curtains, soft folds with hanging edges are obtained.

Popular fabrics

Many different types of fabrics are used to make curtains, but not all are suitable for the kitchen. Kitchen curtains need to be washed more often, so ideally the material should be durable enough to withstand multiple washes.

If the curtains are located in close proximity to the work area and stove, then the fabric should have dirt-repellent properties and low hygroscopicity. It is from this material that most roller blinds and Roman blinds are made - namely, polyester.

Expert advice

Elena Vasilyeva

interior designer

Polyester is a durable, synthetic fabric that is ideal for sewing Roman blinds and roller blinds, as it holds its shape well, does not absorb fat and moisture well, and does not fade. Curtains made of polyester with special impregnations can be wiped with a damp cloth.

To decorate a window in the kitchen-living room that is not adjacent to the hob, you can choose lighter and airier fabrics.

Linen curtains in the kitchen

A short guide to choosing fabric depending on the interior style is given in the table below.

ClassicProvence and countryModern
For curtains: organza, tulle, voile, taffeta
For curtains: jacquard, tapestry, velvet, velor, chenille, brocade
For curtains: linen, cotton, chintz
For curtains:

For curtains: tapestry, matting

For curtains: linen, polycotton, polyester, acrylic
For curtains: blackout, matting

Despite the fashion for using natural fabrics, one cannot completely abandon synthetics, since it is synthetic fiber that gives the material the required strength and wear resistance so that the curtains can withstand many washes and maintain a presentable appearance for as long as possible. Natural cotton fades quickly and quickly becomes unusable after repeated washings, but polycotton is an excellent alternative to its natural counterpart. Thanks to the addition of polyester, the fabric wrinkles less, does not shrink and becomes more durable.

Expert advice

Elena Vasilyeva

interior designer

A fabric such as blackout, which is used for sewing curtains, Roman and roller blinds, and pleated curtains in different styles, deserves special attention. Thanks to the special weave of the threads, the fabric completely blocks light. Blackout can imitate the texture of linen, cotton and other fabrics, while it is devoid of many of the disadvantages of natural analogues.

Dimity

Naturalness is in fashion now. Therefore, it is better to use cotton and linen for kitchen curtains. Mixed fabrics are also suitable. And in some modern styles, synthetics would be appropriate.

  • It is recommended to avoid wool and silk - these materials are extremely demanding to care for.
  • Durability, beautiful texture, resistance to sunlight - all this makes linen the most suitable option for sewing kitchen curtains. But when purchasing it, it is worth remembering that this fabric should be taken with a reserve - it will shrink after washing.
  • Cotton materials have an attractive appearance and good strength properties. The disadvantages include significant shrinkage after wet cleaning and rapid loss of color in the sun.
  • Viscose is an artificial replacement for silk. Its advantages are efficiency and practicality. Disadvantage - does not tolerate regular washing. Designers advise choosing curtains of a mixed composition or lined with natural fabric.

Polyester curtains have their advantages - low cost, resistance to deformation, resistance to fading. There are only two disadvantages - the attraction of dust, high soiling.

Curtains for the kitchen in different styles

Interior style narrows the choice of suitable styles. If you stick to a certain direction, it will be easier to decide on the design of the curtains.

Modern

Modern fashion gravitates towards simplicity, conciseness and monotony. In the projects of professional designers, kitchen curtains are increasingly used as a background.

Therefore, among all styles, Roman and rolled ones break all records, because for the kitchen these are ideal options in many respects - practicality, compactness, fire safety, strength and wear resistance, etc.

A pattern can enliven a monotonous, monochrome interior, but in a modern interpretation it should be unobtrusive, non-garish and harmoniously merging with the surrounding environment.

Classic

For a kitchen in a traditional, classic style, elegant curtains with tiebacks, lace, and lush drapery are suitable.

For a classic kitchen-living room or a kitchen combined with a dining room, you can choose long curtains.

If you need to decorate a window in the work area, then good options would be Austrian or Roman ones with a characteristic classical ornament.

In a small kitchen, you should give preference to modern classics or so-called neoclassics. In this case, it is better to abandon multi-layered, lush and richly decorated options, and choose something simpler and more restrained. For example, you can leave just one lambrequin if there is no need to hide from bright sunlight, or hang light curtains made of tulle or organza. A universal option would be Roman blinds of a plain design or with a discreet pattern.

Provence and country

For a kitchen with rural motifs, light curtains made of natural fabrics - cotton or linen, plain light or with a faded, pale floral pattern or checkered pattern are suitable.

Curtains with tiebacks, lace, and lambrequins will make the interior more elegant.

The most successful styles for a kitchen with a rural soul are cafe curtains, short curtains, and stained glass curtains. The romantic mood of the interior is created not only by the style, but also by the method of attachment - on the sash or on a thin cornice.

Minimalism and hi-tech

For such cold and ascetic styles as hi-tech and minimalism, the most successful solution would be background curtains that blend into the interior and perform only their direct task of protecting from bright light. The most simple, laconic without pretentious decor will do - roller blinds, pleated blinds, Roman blinds or blinds.

In styles such as Scandinavian, hi-tech, minimalism, it is permissible to abandon curtains altogether, if bright light does not interfere during the daytime, and the windows are not accessible to neighbors and passers-by.

Window decoration in the kitchen: decorating double-glazed windows

If you want to decorate a window in the kitchen and don’t want to clutter up the window sill area, you can use other options, for example, decorate double-glazed windows using one of the following methods:

  • stained glass;

Curtains made of beads look great on kitchen windows, making the interior light, dynamic and cheerful.

  • interior stickers;
  • screens;
  • roller blinds;
  • decorative beads;
  • homemade decorations.

Curtains for the kitchen: an integral accessory that makes the interior complete.
The choice of style and color depends on the interior of the kitchen. How to choose fabric, texture and determine the desired length. Self-production.

Every owner can use adhesive film or interior stickers to decorate the window design in the kitchen. In this case, not only an adult, but also a child will be able to realize their talent. Moreover, a large number of different options for stickers for glass surfaces are available in retail outlets.

Helpful advice! Using interior stickers, you can update the design of your kitchen, because they are not only easy to apply, but also very easy to remove, without leaving any traces of glue.

Recently, stained glass windows have been used not only to create classic interiors, but also for modern window decoration. It is not necessary to use stained glass glazing for the entire window - designers recommend covering only its individual parts. This method of decoration looks original and unusual. Stained glass windows can be used both to create a design in the Rococo style and in a modern loft interior. To make stained glass windows look beautiful and attractive, the fusing technique is used, which involves processing glass at high temperatures.

Although decorative screens are mainly used to cover the radiator area, they are also used to decorate windows. Many designers experiment in the process of creating an interior, using window screens made of plastic, aluminum mesh, and metal.

Installed screens on radiators can add zest to the kitchen interior

Screens decorated with laser cutting look beautiful. To care for the screen, you simply need to wipe it regularly with a damp cloth. The most popular model is folding screens, which can be easily raised or lowered if necessary.

Often, looking at photos of decorated windows, you can see that curtains made of beads are used instead of curtains. Despite the fact that this type of decor is usually used to decorate interior openings, it also looks beautiful on windows. The material from which the beads are made is selected based on the overall interior of the room - it can be glass, plastic, wood, buttons or natural material: pebbles, shells. Such curtains will give the interior the right mood, and also fill the kitchen with lightness and dynamics.

Flowerpots with flowers can be placed on the kitchen window, decorated without curtains.

It is recommended to use original handmade products. These can be various figures attached to strings, beautiful garlands, or even small containers with mini-plants. For this type of window design, you can also include children’s ideas, which are often distinguished by their originality.

Asymmetry in design

Asymmetrical curtains can be an assistant in the design of a small kitchen or in the design of a balcony block. For example, when you need to open a window but hide the door, a combination of Roman blinds and short curtains or drapes on one side is suitable. Tacks collect one of the curtains to one side.

This technique is limited by stylistic boundaries: asymmetry gives the interior softer, smoother and oval shapes. This is typical for classics or Provence, but is not suitable for most modern trends - high-tech, loft, scandi, etc.

Kitchen with two windows

A kitchen layout with two windows is not very common. However, if this is your layout, we can say that you are lucky.

Having two windows has its advantages:

  • More daylight.
  • From a long window sill you can make a bar counter or organize a workplace there.
  • Psychologically, there is a better perception of cooking and cleaning the kitchen, since the housewife looks not at the wall, but at the view from the window.

The disadvantages include the following:

  • If windows are installed poorly, cold air can enter the room in large quantities.
  • The second window occupies part of the wall along which wall cabinets could be hung to store dishes or food.

Designing a kitchen with two windows is not so difficult. The main thing is to combine the opportunities that present themselves with desires.

For example, storage niches can be placed under the windows. If the distance from the floor to the window is within seventy centimeters, then it is better to make a dining area out of the window sills, since in this case the tabletop will be low and it will be inconvenient to work on it.

How to decorate a window in a small kitchen?

When choosing curtains for a small kitchen, give preference to simple options with a laconic design and simple cut.

It is better to avoid multilayer options, lambrequins, curtains made of thick and rich fabrics such as velvet and velor.

Bright colored plain and patterned curtains have a place in a small kitchen, provided that they are the only bright spot in the interior and do not overload the space. It is necessary to place accents in small objects of the same color - pillows on chairs, vases, a kitchen towel, for example. But there shouldn’t be a lot of colored details.

Length of curtains in the kitchen

Most often, the cornice is mounted above the window opening so that it extends beyond it by 20 - 25 cm. As for the length of kitchen curtains, they can be:

  • Shortened (to the window sill);
  • Long (to the floor).

It is important that there is a gap of 10 mm between the horizontal surface and the canvas. This way the curtains get dirty less, and they will be much more convenient to use.

Curtains for the kitchen-living room

The choice of curtains for the kitchen-living room will primarily be influenced by two factors - the number of windows and their location.

In the first case, the proximity of the working area or its remoteness should be taken into account. If there is only one window in the kitchen-living room, which is not adjacent to the stove or work surface, then it is better to choose long curtains - curtains and/or drapes, which will add coziness to the interior.

If there are two windows in the studio or kitchen-living room, then the best option is a combination of several styles: for example, in the kitchen area - Roman or roller ones, and in the living room - long curtains or drapes.

Curtains on different windows can be united by one color scheme or a common pattern.

And some more useful information

  • According to SNIP rules, under no circumstances should a stove be placed under a window in the kitchen. Moreover, this solution is simply not practical, because it is too difficult to wash grease from glass and curtains every day.
  • In most cases, the battery under the window is easily hidden in furniture. The main thing is to provide ventilation grilles in its design for the circulation of warm air. If the battery under the window still gets in the way, then you can move it to an adjacent wall, replace it with a smaller radiator, or completely abandon it in favor of a heated floor system.
  • Remember that the window should be approximately 1.5-2 cm or higher above the level of the countertop or bar counter.
  • No matter how you use the windows in the kitchen, try not to clutter the window sills with extraneous things, accessories and appliances (except, perhaps, a small coffee machine). The best options for decorating it are indoor flowers, decorative topiary, candlesticks, small stacks of books, and photo frames.
  • The window can become the main decoration of the kitchen. To do this, it needs to be decorated with beautiful curtains and/or decorated with a beautiful frame, for example, a matching colored set.

French curtains

A classic French option that goes all the way down to the floor from the ceiling and includes many scalloped rows. The curtains are stationary and do not move apart. This model is not suitable for the kitchen, so the model was modernized a little, creating a length up to the window sill .

It is recommended to use the option for kitchens of classic styles. Choose light and natural fabrics, preferably white and pastel shades. Use for large rooms, since in a small kitchen the space will be visually reduced and will look too pretentious.

Selecting a curtain model

There are several varieties of the most common types of curtains for the kitchen: Roman, Japanese, roller, coffee, classic models. Their photos can be easily found on the Internet.

Japanese panels

Such models are also called screen woven panels, which visually resemble movable screens or vertical blinds. They are made of several parts:

  • cornice;
  • screen panels;
  • mechanism for control.

The canvases are usually 40x60 cm, pulled together between 2 guides or using an additional strip that is attached at the bottom. In the classic version, the panels are made from natural material, but modern manufacturers use synthetics or a combination. You can use up to 5 panels on one window.

The cornice is used multi-profile, wall or ceiling. For simplicity and ease of use, the number of tracks should be similar to the number of panels. If you touch the curtains with your hands, they will quickly become dirty, so an electronic control is installed that opens and closes the curtains from a remote control.

When choosing Japanese panels you need to pay attention to several
rules :

  • It is not necessary to use panels from the same material. Curtains of different densities will be more convenient to adjust for day and night. As a combination, linen and chiffon, thick silk and regular fabric are suitable. When choosing, be sure to consider practicality. Loose options will quickly absorb dirt and fumes in the kitchen;
  • in the Japanese style they use natural colors, but modern panel manufacturers offer an abundance of colors, so you can choose a shade at your discretion, the main thing is that they complement the furniture, walls and other elements of the kitchen;
  • when choosing a print, give preference not only to Japanese themes - any designs are suitable for kitchens;
  • for Japanese panels there is no need to use additional decorations. Any other decoration violates conciseness and elegance.

Japanese curtains are universal and will suit different kitchen styles, however, they will not fit into any interior. It is inappropriate to use them when there is a large number of decor or luxurious design of the space. In small areas they will draw all the attention to themselves, thereby taking up part of the space. To avoid incompatibility with the kitchen, you need to choose the right color and size.

Austrian curtains

Another lifting mechanism that involves a combination of Roman and French models . As a rule, the curtain is raised 2/3 of the entire window. In the raised position, smooth horizontal lines appear, often combined with tulle, curtains, and the curtain itself serves as a lambrequin.

To decorate the kitchen, it is better to use natural and light materials that let enough light into the room. Suitable use of tulle, taffeta, silk or linen. The ideal option is installation in kitchens in a classic or romantic style.

Trendy solutions in the world of curtains

Curtains are undoubtedly the right choice for your kitchen. Current trends: Scandinavian style, hi-tech, minimalism, color block, eco-style and modern classics.

All these trends are characterized by simple shapes and patterns, pure tones, light shades, and simple prints.

Therefore, when choosing curtains you should be guided by:

  • Straight cut. No bandeaus, no lambrequins, no frills. For long cottons, you can add linings from the same fabric. They do not look superfluous and create additional opportunities for drapery;
  • Wooden or metal, undecorated cornices. The curtain system should be as concise as possible. Concealed installation options are allowed. For a neoclassical style, you can choose a hanging version of the baguette, but it should not stand out too much;
  • There are no patterns on the fabric. Prints are a thing of the past; modern curtains for the kitchen 2022 are laconic and do not distract attention. An exception can be made for eco-style - in a spacious and bright kitchen you can hang curtains with large floral motifs, for example, monstera leaves;
  • Matching colors to complement the interior color scheme. The curtains form a separate color block. You can combine up to three colors or use shades of the same color to decorate the window area;
  • Pastel palette. Muted shades go well with modern interiors;
  • Natural fabrics. The secret is not in the composition, but in the appearance. Curtains should not have a synthetic shine, and also should not be too thin - they simply cannot be draped beautifully.

Features of choosing the length and width of curtains

Modern short curtains are often a necessity. This solution meets the functional requirements and is convenient to use.

When choosing options, pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • If the wall with a window is empty, long, wide curtains are used;
  • if there is furniture near the window, short options are preferable;
  • If there is a door to the balcony next to the window, you should carefully select the design.

In all cases, the optimal solution is Roman blinds, blinds or roller shutters. They meet all the requirements. If necessary, this variety can be supplemented with standard curtains.

Long

Floor-length curtains also hide the radiator. From a kitchen design point of view, this is the coolest option. But it is also the least practical and the most expensive.

They are also called drapes or curtains, but if you don't want to show them off, they are just a regular curtain.

Short Roman blinds look great on a regular small window. But if you try to use them with non-standard large window openings with many sashes, bay windows and French windows, you will always look like a poor compromise.

Drapery is the folds of the curtain, achieved by the length of the fabric exceeding the length of the fastening (cornice).

It is available in all floor models. This is important so that it does not look like a blanket that has been stretched out to dry.

Regarding the choice of the ratio of the length of draperies and types of fabrics (and how to wash them) - consult with a specialist at the place of purchase - there are too many options, new items are constantly appearing, not everyone has a full range - there is no point in going into details that are constantly changing.

Long models go well with short ones, but more on that after choosing the color.

Short curtains for the kitchen

2 models of short curtains with vertical opening:

Roman blinds are a modern standard for the kitchen. The peculiarity is that the fabric gathers into folds and hangs freely when closed. To the windowsill. It can be hung across the window opening, hiding the plastic window. Any color and transparency of fabric. In the kitchen it can be combined with other types of blinds.

The best models on marketplaces:

Fabrics similar in design, but different in appearance when assembled, include Greek (these are Roman with a straight edge and simple folds - the best), Austrian (wavy style) and French (draped, i.e. have folds and waves horizontally and verticals are not used in modern interiors even in classical styles - an outdated option).

Roller blinds. They have a cylinder at the base onto which material is wound when closed. Thanks to this, unlike the Roman blind, the curtains remain on a flat surface. They can be installed on one window sash or on the entire window. If the fabric doesn't hold anything to the side, they are called "loose-hanging". If the fabric moves along the guides and fits tightly to the window, it is a cassette.

In design, they are inferior to Roman blinds, and many people generally classify them as office options (like blinds) and consider kitchens with them inconvenient.

As a rule, short ones with a vertical hole are better:

In a small separate kitchen, window sill-length curtains are almost always better than long ones.

This is, first of all, practicality and budget. Yes, long ones look cool and more on them later. But often they cannot be used at all (U-shaped kitchens with a window in the middle, corner kitchens with a countertop against a wall with a window, etc.).

One of the ideas that I outlined in my article about a small kitchen and kitchen renovation in a Khrushchev-era building is to put a countertop instead of a plastic window sill. And use the windowsill. Even if the height is higher or lower than the countertop, it is still additional space.

In terms of design, Roman blinds and vertical opening are a modern idea for small kitchens that suit all interior styles thanks to the choice of fabrics.

Short curtains for kitchens with horizontal opening also exist, but they are more difficult to use on the window sill.

What material are suitable for kitchen curtains?

Before choosing beautiful curtains for the kitchen, it is also important to choose the right fabrics. The durability and attractive appearance of the window structure depend on the materials. Remember that the kitchen is considered a room with high humidity. In addition, temperature changes occur frequently and water or grease may splash during cooking.

Choosing fabric for curtains is a very important task. The material should be as easy to clean (iron) as possible and keep its shape well. The most commonly used materials for kitchen window textiles are

  • wool;
  • lace;
  • patchwork;
  • organza;
  • atlas;
  • a curtain;
  • cotton.

Let's take a closer look at each fabric:

  1. Organza . A synthetic fabric characterized by transparency and a slight sheen. It is ideal for a small kitchen where there is not enough light. In addition, this fabric has another important advantage - affordability. It should be noted that during the use of the kitchen, organza curtains lose their original appearance and functional properties - they can stretch and tear.
  2. Veil. Slightly denser than organza, but also made of transparent material. Voile curtains have an expressive shine and are lightweight, which makes them ideal for decorating a small kitchen.
  3. Satin. Want to add a touch of luxury to your kitchen? Prepare curtains for the kitchen from satin. This shiny, dense material is quite easy to keep clean and iron. For satin curtains, be sure to also buy translucent tulle.
  4. Bed linen: A material that fits into the modern environmental trend. Please note that linen curtains cannot be washed in very hot water. In addition, they are difficult to iron - it is better to iron all the folds after washing the fabric.
  5. Cotton. Like linen, it is a natural material, but it is easier to care for. In addition, cotton kitchen curtains can be dyed in any shade. Therefore, unlike linen, they can not only be a single beige color, but also have different prints.
  6. Lace is also often used to decorate window curtains. This is especially important for Provence style kitchens. Original patterns and lightness of the fabric will make the kitchen much lighter, more spacious and lighter.
  7. Net. Synthetic fabric. Thanks to the variety of shades and beautiful shine, this window design looks very stylish and original.
  8. L patchwork sewing. Otherwise, such curtains for the kitchen can be called patchwork. They are made from different fabrics or with different patterns from the same fabric. You can buy or make patchwork curtains yourself, as long as you have samples of different fabrics on hand.

Avoid items made of velvet or brocade. In addition to the fact that these are quite dense fabrics, they get dirty easily and are difficult to clean.

Classic curtains made of light fabrics

Classic style is our most popular design. Assembly is most often done using curtain tape of various types. They are hung from the cornice on loops, hooks or rings using alligator clips.

Classic, versatile and suitable for all modern kitchens. Unlike roller blinds, panel curtains and blinds, they have folds, creating a comfortable interior.

Thanks to the abundance of fabrics, accessories for curtains, and the ability to choose the length of the curtain, you can not only create a unique design, but also hide pipes, a balcony door or a heating radiator.
