Hi all! As personal experience has shown me, a lock for a wardrobe is an extremely useful, and sometimes even necessary, thing in a family with children and pets.
Due to the lock, which you can buy and install yourself, reliably protecting the internal contents of the cabinet. Moreover, it is possible to provide protection from strangers, as well as simply prevent children from accessing the compartment. But these are completely different locking systems.
The most common designs and systems for sliding wardrobes are Aristo and Commander. Good quality and low price. But we are not talking about manufacturers of locking mechanisms, but about their varieties and installation features.
Features of choosing and installing furniture locks
Installation of a furniture lock usually occurs at the factory. Most types of furniture are equipped with this function: most often these are cabinets, furniture fronts, table drawers. A lock can be useful not only to prevent anyone from getting into the contents of the drawer, but also to prevent cabinet doors from opening on their own, for example, if the furniture is not level. It is quite convenient and looks aesthetically pleasing.
What is a furniture lock? Types of products
When choosing a lock, it is important to consider the thickness of the furniture doors; The method by which the installation will be carried out also plays a significant role, since different types of locks may require insertion or do without it.
Furniture fittings and locks can have different designs and are made from various materials, lightweight and durable. After all, for furniture it is important that the device not only protects against burglary, but also looks decorative.
Cabinets with locks are no longer a rarity; they will help protect things from a thief if he breaks into the apartment, secure the doors, and protect the contents of drawers and shelves from curious small children who might eat or spoil something.
Child locks on furniture are usually simple in design; an adult can open them without difficulty, but children will not be able to cope with such a task. This will protect not only things, but also the child himself, if, for example, breakable objects are stored in the closet that could cut the child. Such locks are sometimes called postal locks. They should not be confused with small hinged ones, which are used to protect the mailbox. The types of locks are as follows:
- Mechanical: common, opens with a key.
- Electronic: - to open, you need to dial a code.
- Magnetic: requires a special key to open. It closes using a magnetic field and requires electricity to operate.
Devices and installation methods differ. The following types are distinguished:
- The most common furniture lock is the mortise lock. Often used for wardrobes and other types of furniture, it is not noticeable, does not take up space and does not interfere with the opening of doors.
- The second most popular are rim locks. Most often they are installed on glass doors, since it is not possible to embed a lock into them, but the opening of the doors will be limited. Fixation occurs using bolts; in this case, the glass will have to be drilled. Magnets are used less often, and then drilling is usually not necessary.
In addition, simple locks that are easy to open can be used. They protect cabinets from children and spontaneous opening. Such devices include:
- Latch lock.
- Child lock.
How to choose?
When choosing a lock, first of all you should pay attention to what it is made of: the reliability and durability of the product, as well as the safety of things in the event of a break-in, depend on the quality of the material.
In addition, pay attention to the design of the product and the installation method, since the lock is selected individually for furniture made of different materials. For example, an element designed for a wooden product cannot be installed on a glass door, and vice versa.
You also need to take into account the way the doors open. Most products are suitable for swing doors, but for sliding doors you will have to look for a device that will not interfere with opening and can secure the doors. A wide range of affordable furniture fittings is presented on the website https://chifu.biz/mebelnaya-furnitura
Installing a zip lock on furniture
Installation of such products is usually not difficult. If you have the tools, you can install a furniture lock on the cabinet yourself. To do this, you will need to have a drill, a special Forstner drill, if you don’t have one, you can replace it with a feather drill. It doesn't hurt to have a screwdriver, a piece of plywood and something to use to mark the material.
Installation Tips
If you know how to work with furniture and power tools, then you will not encounter any obstacles to the correct installation of any type of lock.
Do not forget that locking device kits are always supplied with everything necessary, including detailed installation instructions. It is from this that I advise you to start first. But don’t forget about the general recommendations.
The principle of installing locks on different types of cabinet doors is identical. Therefore, the elements are mounted on the coupe in exactly the same way as on the same swing doors.
To clarify some things, let’s look at the main nuances of installing two types of protective and blocking structures.
Mortise locks
To work, you will need to prepare a drill, marking tools, a screwdriver or a screwdriver.
The process involves performing several sequential actions:
- First, carefully and as accurately as possible, apply markings to install the locking mechanism and the block where the latch will fit;
- It is recommended to install locking mechanisms approximately 2/3 of the distance from the floor level so that children cannot reach it;
- Using a drill with a special cutter, a hole is drilled for the lock body;
- The main lock block is installed on the sash with which the body of your sliding wardrobe will be connected. And an additional compartment is mounted on the facade;
- Fixation is carried out with self-tapping screws, a screwdriver or a screwdriver;
- The elements fit together. The levels match is checked. If it is not installed level enough, problems will arise during further operation.
I recommend checking the functionality of the lock itself before purchasing it. Make sure the key turns, the magnet engages, or the system responds to the entered unlock code.
What is a stopper
A closet stopper is a device that helps fix sliding doors in the right place on the guide rail. Owners of closets with two sliding doors do not particularly need stoppers, but if there are 3 or more doors, the need for this device is extremely necessary, because after each opening, you will need to install all the doors (3, 4, 5) evenly, and this takes time and it doesn’t always work out the first time. This happens because without stoppers there is free movement along the lower rail.
How the wardrobe works
There are two types of sliding wardrobes: cabinet - when the furniture has side walls, a top and a bottom, and built-in - when all this is replaced by a niche in the wall. Otherwise, there are no fundamental differences: inside the cabinet there are shelves, drawers and rods for clothes. In front, all this is covered by sliding doors.
Sliding system device. Illustration: Artyom Kozoriz / Lifehacker
At the corners of each door there are rollers that move inside the grooves of the guide profiles attached to the top and bottom of the cabinet. In the closed position, the doors are fixed with special stoppers that keep the rollers from moving. And the buffer tape along the edges of the doors protects the profiles from impacts and softens the closing of the doors.
Of all the cabinet elements, the sliding system is the most complex, and it is with it that most breakdowns are associated.
Installation
Installation or replacement of the device in a sliding wardrobe can be done in a few minutes. All you need to do is place it in the recess of the bottom guide. How many stoppers are needed depends on the actual number of sliding doors. Installation does not require much effort.
How to install?
Anyone can install the device independently, without the help of specialists. For this:
- Before the guide is attached to the cabinet, we insert a stopper into the recess from the end of the line.
- With the bifurcated parts facing up, we pull it into the track to the place where the door wheel is planned to stop.
- Then we screw the rail to the guide.
Which lock to buy for the closet
The catalog of the online store Technical Laboratory presents furniture locking devices from the following manufacturers.
- Sheriff . Reliable compact models. The design feature is that when opened, the door is pushed out of the cabinet body, which eliminates the need to install handles.
- IronLogic . Electronic devices from this manufacturer have a built-in autonomous controller and can be opened by presenting a card, entering a code or presenting a bracelet.
The price of a lock for a cabinet and other furniture depends on its reliability and the availability of electronic components. The managers of our online store will help you choose the model that suits your budget and capabilities.
Closer for sliding system
This is a whole system that includes stoppers, limiters, latches and other elements so that the doors automatically close smoothly and are comfortable to use. Every third model requires several closers at the same time due to the need to close the doors in different directions. Adapters that regulate the operation of the system are installed in the upper part of the cabinet, and the closer is installed in the upper part of the guide yard.
It is worth noting another significant role that is controlled by the automatic system - security. This device minimizes the likelihood of injury when closing the cabinet abruptly.
In addition to providing safety to the owners, the structure itself has an increased level of protection against loosening. This opportunity arises due to the shock-absorbing effect that is introduced into the automatic door closer systems.
To select an automatic closer system, you should pay attention to the following factors:
- dimensions and weight of the wardrobe;
- directions for closing and opening the sliding system;
- material of manufacture of the system itself (aluminum structure or steel).
The installed systems are in demand and extremely popular due to the fact that they combine:
- Ease of use. You just need to push the door and it will smoothly close on its own. Children or pets will not be able to do this. The effort that needs to be made is not noticeable for an adult, but for children even an animal will cause difficulties.
- Aesthetic appearance. The door is always in the right position and closed for a fee.
- Safe to use. When closing the doors, neither children nor pets will be harmed. Often when playing, children can sharply push the door, and the system slows it down 5-7 centimeters from the wall itself and slowly closes it, preventing injury and damaging the cabinet body.
- Reliability. Steel and aluminum structures allow the mechanism to be used for a long time.
You can learn how to install a stopper with a shock absorber on a sliding wardrobe from the video.
What to do if the damper tape comes off
A trivial problem, but nevertheless very annoying. The fleecy strip has an adhesive base, with which it is attached to the profile. Over time, the edge dries out and the tape comes off, dangling back and forth when the door moves.
Illustration: Artyom Kozoriz / Lifehacker
There are several solutions here. The simplest thing is to glue the torn end of the tape with rubber or cyanoacrylate glue. You can also completely remove the old strip, clean the profile with a degreaser to remove any remaining adhesive, and then attach a new strip. They are inexpensive and sold in furniture stores.
Another option is to use special clamping brackets. They will fix the edge of the tape and prevent it from moving, even if it has already partially come off.
The need to protect furniture
A small child finds everything that happens around him interesting, so situations often arise that threaten the baby’s health. The time when children begin to crawl and walk is considered especially dangerous, since the danger will be from sharp corners and doors of furniture, sockets, and household appliances. Young children especially actively begin to explore the world from the contents of the closet and shelves. Some things can be removed or moved higher, but the sharp corners of tables, sofas, chairs, and drawers remain.
Even if you protect sharp furniture elements, the question arises regarding the contents of cabinets, cabinets, and drawers. The baby can open the door and easily get to small items, dangerous devices and valuables, and medicines. Therefore, it is important to take care to make it difficult for a child to penetrate into pieces of furniture.
To reduce the risk of injury to a child, caring parents resort to tricks - installing protection, limiters and blockers. Sometimes such devices are made independently, but a more reliable option is special products that can be purchased at hardware stores.
How to repair a wardrobe if the doors roll back
Stoppers are used to secure closed sashes. These are special spring-loaded brackets in the grooves of the lower guides, which stop the roller in the desired position and prevent it from rolling back. With an unadjusted or broken stopper, the sash is blocked before it reaches the side wall or is fixed at all. As a result, the door does not close tightly.
Illustration: Artyom Kozoriz / Lifehacker
To make the correct adjustment, close the sash, lift it slightly and mark the position of the roller with a pencil. Move the door to the side so it is out of the way. Now move the stopper, aligning it exactly with the center of the mark. To do this, press on one of the antennae with a screwdriver, and then push the stopper in the desired direction with your hand or a second screwdriver.
To keep the latch in place longer, remove it and bend the antennae wider - this way they will dig deeper into the profile and hold on tighter. To do this, lift the flaps up one by one and carefully remove them. Then unscrew the screws from the lower guide profile and remove it. Now the stopper can be pulled out by sliding it towards the edge.
If one of the retainer's antennae is broken, it will no longer stay in the guide. In this case, you need to buy a new stopper and replace it by removing the doors and taking out the profile as described above.
To prevent the stopper from moving, you can also fix it at the edges. To do this, drill through the hole with a thin drill and insert a nail there or simply screw in a small self-tapping screw.
Experienced furniture makers do not use stoppers at all, but simply use a center punch to make a dent on the profile where the roller “falls through.” This method is more reliable, but requires high accuracy.
Types of blockers
There are several main types of blockers. The difference lies in the method of attaching the device to furniture and the features of their functioning. There are Velcro-type blockers and permanently mounted ones.
Main types of door locks:
- Locks are interlocks that lock onto handles from the outside. The device securely closes the door leaves, which helps protect the contents from damage and the baby’s fingers from injury. The mechanism of the device is a plastic cord with notches, which are fixed with a special attachment. The handles are braided with cord and closed with a “lock”. The advantage is that adults can easily open the mechanism, but children cannot;
- a universal lock connecting the door of a cabinet or chest of drawers to the body. The mechanism is a silicone strap, which is secured with clasps on the sides. The advantage lies in the versatility of the fixation, since it can easily be used on drawers and doors where there are absolutely no handles;
- shock absorbers blockers - devices of this type are made from elastic and at the same time durable materials: plastic, foam rubber, rubber, silicone. It does not close the door, but, on the contrary, does not allow it to open completely or close completely. Thus, the baby will not be able to nail his fingers. A shock-absorbing blocker is installed in the upper part of the door;
- locks for sliding doors, for example, for sliding wardrobes. Often the device is made of plastic, and its mechanism completely replicates the design of the door, where the strap is secured with a special fastener. It is impossible for a child to cope with the mechanism, but for an adult it is easy to open the door with such a lock;
- internal lockers are mounted on screws and are a retractable structure that will not allow opening a chest of drawers or cabinets. In addition, this detail does not attract too much attention from the child and does not spoil the appearance of the furniture.
It is better to choose blockers and other security elements that do not stand out against the background of the overall design of the room, so that they do not attract too much attention from the baby. There are blockers for other needs - fixing plastic windows, a device for limiting door locks. The main thing is to choose the right device for the corresponding door or drawer.
Child protection on drawers and cabinets: how to make a lock with your own hands, protection from sharp corners of furniture
Anyone who has a child is constantly monitored and monitored to make sure they don't climb where they don't need to. But children are so curious that, first of all, their interest is piqued by something forbidden.
The closets and drawers where adults store their things are something that they won't leave alone and will be constantly drawn to. Therefore, protecting children on drawers and cabinets is not a whim of adults, but necessary precautions.
With their help, children will be healthy, parents will be calm, and there will be no unnecessary reasons for nerves.
An apartment for a small child is a huge and interesting world. Just starting to take its first steps, each little one stubbornly strives to explore this world.
Manufacturers offer a fairly large range of mechanisms that will block access to bedside tables, drawers and cabinets. There are types of devices that have the following differences:
- module;
- lock type;
- design;
- functionality.
Thus, each buyer can purchase the most suitable model for himself.
Types of child locks for furniture
There is a huge selection of blockers on the market. They differ:
- locking mechanism;
- features of use;
- functionality.
There are blocks that are attached with a special Velcro, that is, if necessary, they can be removed. There are also fixed versions of locks.
Drawers and cupboards of chests of drawers, shelves of closets in which things that are familiar and familiar to an adult are stored attract a child like a magnet.
To understand how to lock a closet from small children, you need to familiarize yourself with the options for locks and latches. The following models are distinguished:
- Locks with a mechanism for fastening the outer sides of the handles - such a mechanism securely connects two cabinet doors and helps protect all the contents in it from damage and falling into the hands of those for whom it is not intended. The tightness of the locking element will prevent children's fingers from getting between the two doors, which will avoid possible injuries. The mechanism consists of two parts: a plastic cord with notches and a special attachment; the handles are wrapped with laces, after which an attachment is used to fix the position of the lace. If an adult needs to take something, he can easily open the lock, but a child will not be able to do this.
- Universal locks - the essence of the work is that the mechanism reliably connects the furniture door with its body. The strap is made of silicone, which is attached with one side to the door and the other to the base. This model is quite functional, because it can also be used on furniture that does not have handles.
- Locking shock absorbers - for the manufacture of such a device, materials with increased elasticity and strength are used. It can be: silicone, foam rubber, rubber and others. The mechanism of this design differs from the previous ones in that it does not block the door, but simply prevents it from closing completely. Therefore, a small child will not get his fingers pinched even with a strong clap of his hands, because the obstacle will leave a gap of a certain thickness. This design is fixed in the upper part of the product.
- Sliding door lock: This model is great for sliding wardrobes. Most often, plastic is used to make such a mechanism; the model itself completely replicates the design of the door. This strip is put on the door, and a special buckle allows you to fix it in the desired position. This type of blocker is resistant to children's hands, but it is also not a hindrance for adults if necessary.
- Internal locks differ from previous models in that they are fixed not from the outside, but from the inside. The mechanism is fixed with self-tapping screws, and the product itself prevents the chest drawers from opening. Since attachment comes from within, it is not obvious and does not arouse further interest in the child. Another big plus is that this does not affect the condition of the furniture in any way.
When choosing blockers, you need to pay attention to the silent design so that they fit into the entire interior and do not attract unnecessary attention.
Without proper handling, coordination, and care skills, a young child can hurt himself or herself while exploring nearby corners of our furniture.
Homemade security features
Devices that prevent doors and cabinets from opening can be made with your own hands; for this you need to use your imagination. Parents seal the cabinets with duct tape or put rubber bands on the handles and hide the extension in a cardboard box.
If you make your own furniture safety devices, make sure they are secure before use.

What to do if the doors catch each other
Each of the flaps is in its own groove in the guides, and when moving they do not touch each other. If the doors stick, there may be two reasons.
Illustration: Artyom Kozoriz / Lifehacker
Due to vibration or unreliable fastening, the side profiles of the sashes sometimes become loose and begin to touch each other. To fix this, tighten the mounting screws clockwise. They are easy to find: there is only one at the top, and at the bottom you need to touch the screw, which is located next to the adjustment screw, that is, the second from the bottom.
The second possible reason: during adjustment or under its own weight, the door sank and skewed to one side. Because of this, one edge is higher and rests against the top guide or rubs against the other sash. To get rid of the problem, adjust the height of the sash: unscrew the adjusting (lower) screw counterclockwise.

How to repair a wardrobe if the doors are hard to open
The doors move reluctantly when something interferes with them. Most often it is dust and dirt that gets stuck in the grooves. So first check the guides. If necessary, use a thin object to remove any debris and then vacuum.
Never lubricate the guides with oil to reduce friction. This will not solve the problem, but will worsen it: dust will only stick to the oil more strongly.
If the profile is clean, then the door itself has probably sagged. In this situation, it rubs against the guide and jams. To fix this, raise the doors a few millimeters by turning the roller screws on each side clockwise.
Illustration: Artyom Kozoriz / Lifehacker
Such a breakdown may also be an advanced case of a previous problem. Lift the sash and inspect the roller: if it is worn out, replace it with a new one.
What to do to prevent doors from squeaking when opening
The shutter rollers rotate on bearings, so they move very easily. Sometimes hair gets into the grooves of the guides, which wraps around the roller axis and blocks it. As a result, the wheels do not spin, but simply rub along the profile, producing a characteristic sound.
Illustration: Artyom Kozoriz / Lifehacker
The solution is this: lift the door and place a wedge or something similar under it to secure it. Use tweezers or other available tools to remove the hair from the roller. After this, the wheels will rotate normally again. For prevention, you can additionally lubricate the axle with a couple of drops of machine oil.
If you do not get rid of the problem in time, the rollers will simply wear out, lose their roundness and will no longer be able to spin. You'll have to replace them with new ones.
