How to choose the right one-and-a-half and double bed: dimensions

When buying a bed, one of the main, decisive parameters is its size. If you make a mistake by ten centimeters, a comfortable night's rest turns into a difficult test. You have to tuck your legs in, your head rests against the headboard, and it’s completely impossible to stretch your arms and legs to your heart’s content. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a model carefully, taking into account all factors. This:
  • the user's body type, height and weight;
  • the number of people who will sleep on this piece of furniture;
  • individual habits.

How to purchase a sleeping bed of the ideal dimensions, suitable for you and your family members? In this article, our experts will tell you what parameters you need to focus on when choosing a bed for children and adults, for one person or a married couple. They will introduce you to size ranges developed by leading Russian and foreign manufacturers and accepted everywhere as a standard.

What sizes of beds are there?

The first point that is important to decide is width, length and height. A person should be able to sleep comfortably, lie in a free position while resting, or, for example, put a child next to him and still feel comfortable; young parents will understand.

Let's start. Assign standard dimensions for the width of the bed.

  • One and a half - 140 cm.
  • Double room - 160 cm.
  • When unfolded (known name is king size) - 180 cm.
  • There are also two-meter models, but less often.

It is worth noting that the parameters refer to the sleeping place - the frame can be as wide as desired. Based on these indicators, choose a mattress.

How to determine the width?

The trucks are suitable for children and teenagers, those who will sleep alone. To sleep together, you need a double piece of furniture of at least 160 cm; if the family has a small child who usually sleeps with their parents, a width of more than 180 cm is acceptable, and preferably 200 cm.

To choose the length, add 20 cm to the person’s height. If you sleep on a large pillow, then 30 cm. For people taller than 190 cm, individual measurements are required; As a rule, the production of these costs 10% more. Don’t neglect this point: it’s uncomfortable to sleep with your legs dangling. It’s better to overpay once, but then relax with pleasure.

Height dimensions

There is more variety here, since depending on the style, models can be of different heights. For example, high-tech beds do not have legs; they rest on the floor.

The standard is 50 cm, which is considered to be the most comfortable indicator for a person.

The choice is determined by the age, build and wishes of the future owner. Therefore, low options are not suitable for older people - they make it more difficult to get up and go to bed. If the height is sufficient, drawers for storing bedding are made inside, pull-out or regular.

And low ones are only suitable for certain interior styles.

Materials

  • Bars 45 * 50 * 3000 mm - 12 pcs.
  • Bars 45 * 20 * 3000 mm - 4 pcs.
  • Plywood with a thickness of 15 mm 1600 * 700 mm.
  • Wood screws 70 and 100 mm.
  • Corners 50 * 50 mm - 4 pcs (or 50 * 100 mm).
  • Corners 20 * 50 mm - 8 pcs.
  • Legs 5 pcs. height from 150 mm (if you plan to make a roll-out box).
  • Foam rubber 40-50 mm and 20-30 mm, one sheet at a time (you need furniture foam rubber with good density, otherwise it will lose its shape over time and immediately after installation it will be too soft and sink to the wood).
  • Leatherette 1.6 * 2.5 m (do not take a thick one - it will not be soft and will crack quickly, and also be sure to choose one that stretches at least a little).
  • Decorative buttons for headboard 12-15 pcs.
  • 22-26 slats.
  • Staples.

Bed size for two

The length of the bed (as well as the mattress itself) is considered standard: 190 and 200 cm. It is optimal for the length of the bed to be: its height + 30 cm. Thus, you can easily place a volumetric pillow and sleep very comfortably. If your height requires a bed length of 210, 220 and 230 cm, this is normal. Almost all manufacturers produce non-standard products.

The choice of width, when it comes to a bed for two, is a predominantly important factor, since if there is not enough space, sleeping together will be extremely uncomfortable. We offer the following system for choosing a bed size for two, based on the weight of the members:

  • Approximately the same weight of partners up to 70 kg - for light loads, the best option would be a double bed with a width of 140-160 cm.
  • Approximately the same weight of partners up to 100 kg - for medium loads, the best option would be a double bed with a width of 160-180 cm.
  • Approximately the same weight of partners over 100 kg - for heavy loads, the best option would be a double bed with a width of 180-200 cm.
  • If the sleeping person is a large man and a fragile girl, or vice versa, pay attention to the classic bed sizes with a width of 160-180 cm.

To make sure the bed is the right size for you, lie on your side with your elbows apart. If they don't interfere with each other, it's your size!

King size

The king or queen bed is truly king sized, offering free accommodation for two or even three if required.

Height – is it important when choosing a bed?

The height of the bed is calculated privately by adding the height of the frame, the thickness of the base and the mattress, so the indicator is not regulated by manufacturers. The comfort of furniture is determined not only by the chosen interior styles, but also by the bodily needs of the sleeper. It will not be very comfortable for a short person or a child to sit on a high bed. Elderly people often experience problems with the functioning of the musculoskeletal system, so models of average height are suitable for them.

A bed up to 30 cm in height is considered low; if it is necessary to emphasize the size of a one-and-a-half bed, an average value not exceeding 60 cm is suitable; a high bed is placed on legs or suspended. It can be raised above ground level by 90 cm.

In the next article we will talk about the sizes of a bed with two levels. Let's try to describe this topic in more detail.

Outdoor furniture is chosen by young people interested in creating a fashionable interior. An excellent option would be to purchase a bed with adjustable legs, the height of which can be adjusted to suit your own needs.

The parameters of the bed are determined taking into account personal preferences. To save space in the room, a single bed is suitable. If the sleeper is a light sleeper and often changes body position during sleep, then you should choose one-and-a-half or double-bed furniture.

In a cramped sleep environment, a person will not be able to relax, take a comfortable position, and will wake up regularly. As a result, by saving free space in the room and choosing a small bed, you will not get a sound sleep, even despite all the important advantages of a bed in the form of a base and orthopedic mattresses. Because of this, you should choose a bed that is as large as possible if possible.

Description of work

For this mission, you will need a board with special holes or a sheet of plywood on which the same holes will be made.

This method requires accuracy and diligence, but the result is worth it - a royal bed in your home. The description and video will help you do all the work without errors.

Step-by-step description of how to make an upholstered carriage headboard:

Cut out the plywood and foam rubber to the desired shape.

We make markings on plywood or a board with holes in accordance with the screed pattern - in the form of squares or diamonds (diamond mesh). On the finished board you just need to mark the holes needed for the job, on plywood - drill them.

Prepare paper on which we make exactly the same markings.

We place paper on top of the foam rubber and mark the holes using a marker.

The most important step is to make holes in the marked places. To do this, use a knife.

The foam rubber must be glued to the plywood or board with rubber glue so that the holes of both materials coincide.

A layer of padding polyester is glued onto the foam rubber, on which you need to make holes according to the same markings.

Carefully stretch the fabric and fix it with a furniture stapler. For complex headboard shapes, you also need to use a needle and thread, pulling the fabric from the center and evenly distributing it to the edges.

Cover the buttons with fabric or leave them as is - it all depends on the design of the buttons.

We sew the finished buttons into the designated sockets and secure them with strong threads - starting from the center, continuing horizontally on both sides.

It is difficult to fix the thread on the plywood; it is better to use the same stapler staples. We entangle the thread between them and securely fasten them. The headboard is ready!

You can make holes with a drill in foam rubber and plywood at once, but to do this, you need a special attachment for the drill. In addition, this method requires certain skills - one mistake and you can ruin everything. A soft headboard can transform your bed, your bedroom and your mood. Making it is not at all difficult, you just need to carefully study the video and master class. It will take you no more than a day to make such a bed update, and for the option without screeds you only need a couple of hours.

How long should the bed be?

To determine the optimal length of the bed, add 20 cm to the person's height. If you plan to use a large pillow, you will need to add another 10 cm. For tall people, round beds with a diameter of up to 240 cm are suitable.

Standard furniture sizes are designed for people of average height (170-180 cm). Sometimes manufacturers offer products with a length of 195 cm, but such beds are not in demand due to possible difficulties at the stage of purchasing mattresses and bedding.

Helpful advice on choosing a size

If the dimensions of the room are limited, and every centimeter counts, there are several recommendations on how to choose a bed that is the right size for two, saving as much space as possible:

  1. Choose beds with a thin headboard and without a footboard (such models are usually made almost to the width and length of the mattress, maximum +5 cm in length and width);
  2. Podium bed - these models are a frame (made of chipboard, MDF, solid wood, etc.), covered with leather or fabric, with or without legs. Such models are great space savers, as they practically double the dimensions of the mattress;
  3. Beds with lifting mechanisms and drawers make the structure mobile and ergonomic, allowing you to store bed linen, pillows, blankets, etc.;
  4. Use only an orthopedic base. By placing an orthopedic mattress in the frame, you will get a full-fledged sleeping place with incredible space savings in the bedroom (in addition, such products can significantly save your budget).

Creating coziness in the bedroom and harmoniously “fitting” the bed into the interior is easier than you think. Furniture manufacturers offer a wide selection of textures, finishes, colors, shapes and designs. In our online store you can order a custom bed (according to your drawing). Preparing the base of the headboard

Take a plywood sheet of the required size. It can be rectangular or other non-standard shape.

For the base of the headboard you will need a sheet of plywood.

We cut the foam rubber to the size of the plywood base. We apply markings on the foam rubber for fastening the buttons. The fastening can be any: in several rows, diagonally or in a checkerboard pattern.

A piece of foam rubber needs to be cut to the size of a plywood sheet.

Next, take a knife and make holes for the buttons. They can also be made using a heated metal pipe. Remember that you need to put a board under the foam rubber, otherwise there is a chance of ruining the floor covering. Next, we lay the foam rubber on the plywood base and draw holes with a pencil. We drill the necessary holes.

Holes for buttons are cut in the foam rubber.

Bed width

The width of the bed is considered a decisive factor when choosing functional furniture. The possible size of a single bed is 70, 80 or 90 cm, the same width guarantees a restful sleep for an adult or teenager.

Recommendations for choosing bed width:

If you are wondering how to connect a built-in gas cabinet, oven and ceramic hob. Follow the link.

  • In the “side” position, your legs and elbows bent at the knees should not hang from the mattress or rest against the handrails.
  • There should be at least 15-20 cm from the back or hips to the edge of the bed.
  • The distance between people sleeping on a double bed should be approximately 20 cm.
  • If the interior of the room allows you to install full-fledged furniture, you should choose the King model with a width of more than 200 cm. The difference in price between standard and luxury sizes of a double bed is insignificant.
  • Those who like to toss and turn in their sleep should pay attention to the square design of 200x200 cm.

A one-and-a-half square bed is more suitable for one person. It will be awkward for both of you to spend your holidays in the same place to sleep. If furniture is needed for a couple, the possible size of a double bed exceeds 200 cm, but is usually limited to 180 cm, the usual width is 150, 155 or 170 cm for double furniture, only in this case the mattress and bed linen must be made to order.

Carriage screed and its features

The carriage screed, or as it is also called - capitonne, first appeared several centuries ago in France. This design technique was often used when upholstering furniture, seats and other interior items used by the aristocracy. The capitone technique was often used to decorate the walls of carriages, making them more comfortable and having an attractive aesthetic appearance. In addition, thanks to the use of such a screed, the walls of the carriages had a good level of thermal insulation.

Over time, the capitone technique began to be actively used not only during the design of vehicles (carriages), but also for the upholstery of various furniture (beds, armchairs, ottomans) and the design of room interiors. Today, a technique called capitonne (carriage tie) is actively used not only in the manufacture of a variety of furniture. It is also used when upholstering doors and walls in residential premises. This is due to the fact that thanks to the use of this technology, it is possible to significantly increase the level of sound insulation, as well as give the room a beautiful, extravagant appearance.

The carriage screed technique involves the use of furniture buttons or special decorative nails, which are equipped with a wide head and covered with fabric, velor or leather. Thanks to their use, the upholstery material can be securely fixed and given the required volume and the size of shapes (squares, triangles) can be adjusted. Special presses are used to make such buttons. However, you can make them yourself, at home. To do this, you need to select buttons of the right size and carefully cover them with fabric (some craftsmen replace the fabric with leather, but in this case the cost of manufacturing such buttons increases).

There are several different types of carriage screeds, through the use of which you can decorate furniture or interior items. However, it should be noted that the carriage screed technique itself is performed according to the same principle. When cladding products using this technology, the following approaches are used:

  1. The surface is first prepared and then sheathed with a sheet of solid material. Then, using buttons, the product is given the necessary relief.
  2. The cladding process is carried out using individual fragments made of fabric or leather. They must have a certain size and be cut strictly according to the pattern.

The capitone technique involves the use of a wide variety of materials. For furniture upholstery, you can use artificial leather, suede, and high-density fabric. However, it should be noted that materials such as suede and velor are difficult to care for, as they accumulate large amounts of dust during long-term use.

How to determine the right bed length

The standard bed length can be considered 200 and 190 cm, this is more than enough for most people of average height. Difficulties can arise when a tall person needs a place to sleep. You will also have to move away from standard solutions if you need to find the optimal solution for a bedroom with a small area. In any case, comfort cannot be compromised, so there is a simple and proven way to choose the length of the bed: add 20 cm to the height of the tallest user. Those who like very large pillows should increase the result by another 10 cm. But you need to be prepared for the fact that a custom model will cost a little more than the serial analogue.

Bed dimensions relative to room size

It seems that everything is obvious regarding the relationship between the sizes of the bed and the bedroom. All you have to do is take the measurements of the room and, based on these indicators, choose a bed. On the one hand, this is true. But while in a store, it is very difficult to reproduce in your head the interior and features of the room, which, as will become clear later, are very important. Therefore, it is recommended to do two things.

  1. Answer the following questions: how to place the bed, against the wall or in the center of the room? How much useful space in the room can be spent on a bed without all the furniture standing next to each other?
  2. Schematically depicts the room with dimensions on paper and indicates the location of furniture already available or planned for purchase.

The result obtained from these actions is the size of the suitable bed. And to comfortably complete the second step, you can use the room modeling service on our website.

Sketch

Types of carriage tie patterns

First, you should decide on the decor pattern - rhombus or square, as well as the design and shape of the future structure. For the first experience, it is recommended to start with simple headboard shapes - a rectangle or square. Next you need to think about what material will be used for the upholstery. Here it is recommended to choose durable furniture fabrics that can withstand high loads during use, since thin fabric not intended for upholstery can tear even while tightening the buttons. The choice of color is at the discretion of the artist, but it is preferable to use plain fabrics. Large designs and patterns are deformed when reupholstered and can ruin the appearance of the product. If you plan to use covered buttons, then you should take care of this in advance - purchase a special press and make blanks, or order their production in a specialized workshop. It’s much easier with ready-made furniture buttons - you can choose them at a furniture fittings store.
