Bed along the wall - 7 ways to protect the wall covering from dirt and damage

The problems of residents of small apartments are often associated not only with how to arrange furniture so that there is still some free space left. It often happens that the size of the room does not allow you to purchase a luxurious bed with a headboard, and the covering of the walls behind the bed gets dirty over time, loses color and wears out.

In this case, renovating the apartment is expensive and not necessary at all. You can protect the covering of a small area in the immediate vicinity of the bed or decorate an entire wall adjacent to the sleeping area. This can be done in a variety of ways.

Zoning with wallpaper at the head of the bed

If all the walls in the bedroom are plain, then you can decorate the head of the bed with striped wallpaper. It is better to choose high-quality silk-screen printing that can be washed with a brush and soap. This will help maintain the aesthetic appearance of the coating throughout its entire service life.

For the Provence style, wallpaper above the bed with a small floral pattern is more suitable in the bedroom, but for the classics you should choose a large floral pattern or elaborate flowing curls.

For a high-tech style, the optimal solution would be a black and white wallpaper above the bed. Bright, rich colors are suitable for pop art, eclecticism, and fusion.

The bed area can be highlighted with wallpaper using photo wallpaper, choosing a theme in accordance with the overall style of the interior.

What kind of varnish can be used to coat different types of wallpaper?

In the old days, when finishing materials were not of such high quality as they are now, they had to be coated with various protective compounds to increase their service life.
I had to paint boards, walls, wallpaper. If we look at wallpapers of the past, varnish was used to physically protect them, which additionally gave them gloss. Modern wallpapers of various types can also be coated with a special varnish that will help them withstand adversity. We’ll tell you right now which wallpaper varnish to use and for what types of wallpaper.

A good solution for many wallpapers

Hanging headboards - a way to place a bed against the wall without dirtying the wallpaper

Stationary headboards increase the length of the bed, which is sometimes unacceptable for small rooms. They cannot be dismantled, as this would damage the frame of the product. Therefore, when the question arises of how to protect wallpaper from abrasion near the bed, you can order or make a hanging element with your own hands, decorating it to match the overall design of the room.

A soft headboard with wallpaper inserted above the bed looks very organic in the bedroom. It makes the room more comfortable and adds its own flair. This product can be made as follows:

  • The desired shape of the headboard is cut out of a sheet of plywood or chipboard, onto which padding polyester or foam rubber is applied and secured with a construction stapler. Then the material is selected taking into account the wallpaper used to highlight the bed area, the texture and color of the textiles or curtains, and is also secured using metal staples. It can be silk, satin, calico, satin, leather, eco-leather and so on. For decoration, you can sew on decorative buttons. If the room is made in a retro style, then the fabric should be assembled with puffs.
  • Order or sew 2-3 small pillows, sewing loops to them in the form of wide straps. Attach a bracket or curtain rod above the headboard to a height of about 70 cm. Hang pillows on it so that they touch the edge of the bed or move slightly away from it. Depending on the style of the room and the wallpaper pattern for a white bed, you can use white or colored fabric, with a floral or geometric pattern, with a photograph or picture printed on it.
  • For eco-style and country style, a headboard made of wood is suitable. It can have the classic shape of a rectangle, semicircle or square, or it can also be cut in the form of an irregular geometric figure. The product is coated with varnish, which emphasizes the structure of the wood and protects it from moisture, abrasion and cracking. This headboard is an ideal solution if the wallpaper next to the sofa bed is worn out.
  • Instead of a carpet, you can hang an animal skin or a tapestry on the wall. This option is suitable for ethnic style.
  • For a bedroom in a modern style, materials such as plexiglass, mirror, plastic and even metal are suitable. You can make and hang a wallpaper panel over the bed.

Additional measures

A special varnish will perfectly cope with the function of protecting wallpaper from dirt . You can do the work yourself. Below are tips from master builders:

  1. We glue the wallpaper onto the walls and wait until the glue is completely dry.
  2. Before varnishing, you can apply a transparent primer to the wallpaper. If there is no soil, then work can be carried out without it.
  3. The varnish coating must be applied in several layers (2-3). Each layer must dry thoroughly.
  4. When varnishing is completed and the varnish is completely dry, you can lightly polish it with a soft cloth. This will give the walls an intricate shine.

When you do this work, you will definitely get a “5+” result; your varnished wallpaper will be ready for long-term use.

Advantages of varnish coating:

  • the varnish coating is not afraid of moisture, you can wash the wall at any time;
  • wallpaper will not fade;
  • the protective layer can protect the wallpaper from mechanical damage.

Disadvantages of varnishing:

  • even minor defects that were made when leveling the walls can come out;
  • additional costs are possible during repairs - physical (application) and material (purchase);
  • sometimes, after drying, the varnish tightens the material, and the joints between the canvases separate (how to repair wallpaper and joints if they come apart?).

Is it possible to apply varnish to paper material?

Most often, a protective layer is applied to paper wallpaper, since it is they that are most susceptible to contamination and damage. Various compositions are used. Water-based acrylic varnish is considered popular and effective. It will protect your walls from moisture and dirt, while maintaining their decorative appearance. Painting work will not take up much of your time.

Important

Refrain from purchasing thin white paper wallpaper for painting. If you decide to varnish them, the canvases will begin to show through and the concrete wall will appear underneath them.

Original design of wallpaper in the bed area

Having decided to effectively highlight the headboard area, you can use:

  • old vinyl discs mounted on the wall in a strict or chaotic order;
  • 3D wallpaper in the bedroom above the bed or photo wallpaper;
  • panel made using patchwork technique;
  • white carved wood;
  • collage of photographs;
  • funny stickers with images of animals, fairy tale or comic book characters, letters, etc.

Interesting objects

Have you found an art object that strikes your imagination or an item that is extremely dear to your heart? Perhaps his place is above the bed.

Several commonly found wall objects: a panel with fresh flowers, branches, panels or curtains with lighting, compositions of mirrors and a half-canopy.

Shelves and niches

When choosing how to protect the wallpaper behind the bed and decorate the wall, you should think about shelves or niches. It is not only beautiful, but also convenient and functional. You can place books, lamps, soft toys, small vases or flower arrangements on them.

The height of the shelf attachment should be equal to the length of your arm. This will allow you to quickly get the necessary thing from a lying position. If the option of sitting in a bed is provided, then the height of the shelf should be the height of a person in a sitting position plus 15 cm. You can make several shelves. But in this case, it is necessary to use lightweight structures so that there is no feeling of hanging over your head while resting.

To decorate a niche, an insert made of wood, glass, leather, fabric or plastic, LED lighting, paintings, photographs can be used.

Protecting wallpaper in the apartment from children

Does your child draw on the wallpaper? You shouldn’t scold a child for his creative endeavors. You need to understand the child and help him explain where he can draw and where he cannot. Children have no boundaries and boundaries of what is permitted; only after three years, under pressure from society, they begin to understand and listen to the advice of others. We’ll tell you in our article how to protect wallpaper at home and not harm your child’s psyche.

Painting the walls

The wall at the head of the bed can be painted with washable water-based paint. The advantages of this modern material are:

  • long-term preservation of color and shine due to the presence of modifiers;
  • the ability to carry out wet cleaning using household chemicals;
  • versatility when choosing the surface on which the paint is applied (concrete, drywall, plaster, brick, wallpaper and some others);
  • efficiency;
  • high degree of maintainability, allowing you to paint over and renew the wall surface;
  • richness of color palette.

To create a unique design, you should invite an artist to paint a thematic picture on the wall.

Tips from the master

Professionals recommend:

  • Before applying the varnish layer, wait until the wallpaper is completely dry;
  • In some cases, additionally coat the wallpaper with a primer that provides better adhesion of the two materials;
  • Instead of the usual brush, use a paint roller.

If the decision to varnish the wallpaper is made before the paintings are applied to the wall, then they should be glued to the joining tape, and the wall should be thoroughly plastered and primed.

It is best to cover the wallpaper with several layers of varnish, waiting until the previous layer has completely dried.

Wallpaper varnish will help maintain a nice finish and give the room originality and luxury.

Liquid wallpaper for a bedroom with a white bed

It is quite difficult to keep the space near the bed near the wall from getting dirty. Therefore, the wall covering should be easy to wash without losing its aesthetic appearance. This material is liquid wallpaper in the bedroom near the bed instead of a carpet, which is available in a wide range of colors, allowing you to choose the right shade to decorate the interior of the room and take into account what wallpaper will suit a brown bed.

This finish includes cellulose fibers and glue, and wood shavings, mica, sand and other elements are often added to give it texture.

  • moisture resistance;
  • resistance to fading under the influence of ultraviolet radiation (this is important for rooms with windows facing the sunny side);
  • do not contain allergens or components harmful to human health;
  • unpretentious when applied, as they can be used on various surfaces, filling cracks and small irregularities;
  • the possibility of additional decoration with patterns.

What is the best way to cover paper wallpaper so that it does not get dirty?

  1. Advantages and disadvantages
  2. What can you lose?
  3. Which varnish to choose
  4. Treat with PVA glue

Every person's dream is to buy inexpensive, beautiful paper wallpaper, then glue it so that it hangs for 5 years or more, like new. Unfortunately, cheap paper options have one noticeable drawback: they get dirty easily and it is not always possible to remove the dirt.

Worn decorative surface near the switch

Craftsmen have found an original solution for those who want paper finishing materials to last a long time, and dirt or grease on them to be wiped off. After pasting on the walls, when the glue has completely dried, acrylic varnish is applied to the canvases. Thus, you will increase the service life of your wallpaper and after 5-7 years of service they will look decent.

Advantages and disadvantages

What is the advantage of this treatment using acrylic varnish:

  1. The treated surface can be wiped with a soapy sponge without fear of spoiling it.
  2. If you properly varnish your paper wallpaper, the color and pattern depicted on it will become noticeably brighter.
  3. If you want to hang a poster on the wall using tape and then remove it, the paint and paper particles will not remain on the tape. Touching the wall with dirty or greasy fingers will not leave stains, and if they do, see point 1.

Laminated wallpaper for painting

What can you lose?

  1. Thin paper sheets, generously impregnated with varnish, can turn out translucent. Through them you can see the wall, which definitely will not add decorativeness to the finishing material. To prevent this, paper wallpaper is pre-treated with PVA glue, and then varnish is applied on top. With this approach, it will not be able to absorb into the paper base. This processing technology is considered correct.
  2. If you prepare the walls poorly and then glue the canvases so that there are bubbles in places, then after applying the varnish you should expect surprises.
    When the acrylic varnish dries, it will begin to shrink somewhat and if the glue was of poor quality or you did not glue the canvases well enough at the joints, they will curl up. In those places where there were bubbles on the wallpaper and you did not remove them, the paper will burst under the influence of the narrowing varnish, and unsightly holes will appear on the wall. They can be corrected by gluing a piece of the same wallpaper on top and covering it with varnish.
  3. You can cover the walls with glossy varnish.
    When applied to paper, it will highlight all the surface irregularities. If you don’t want this to happen, then buy a semi-gloss or matte version of the wallpaper.
  4. Wallpaper coated with varnish is not so easy to remove from the walls, if you compare the work with removing paintings without such a coating. You just need to moisten plain paper with water and remove it. With varnished ones you will have more trouble; you will have to actively use the spatula. All problems can be solved with a good tool.

As you may have guessed, wallpaper under varnish needs to be prepared well.

As a primer, you can use an aqueous solution consisting of PVA glue and water, combined in a ratio of 1:10.

Which varnish to choose

Some experts who were looking for a special varnish for treating paper wallpaper say that they found one good option, VAK-A-104. The annotation for it says that it is intended specifically for covering wallpaper. If you use other options, you may encounter some of the problems described above.

Interior varnish for wallpaper treatment

Some craftsmen say that they tried to cover photo wallpaper with hairspray. Since it is intended for something else, it contains special additives that are contraindicated for paper. As a result, the solution penetrated deeply into the paper, dried out, and stains appeared in places on the photo wallpaper. It’s also bad that such varnish is sprayed unevenly onto the canvas.

Of course, you can also try to carry out such manipulations with wallpaper, but before you there were already craftsmen whose experience says that hairspray should not be used in this way.

Is it possible to apply varnish to paper wallpaper with a non-woven backing?

If we are talking about canvases with a non-woven base and a paper top intended for painting, then you can safely apply the chosen paint to them and cover the top with acrylic varnish. It is permissible to use the same special varnish VAK-A-104, it will adhere perfectly to the paintwork material.

Craftsmen warn against buying thin paper wallpaper on a non-woven basis to be painted white and using this material without paint applied on top.

If you decide to simply apply varnish on them, it will make the canvases translucent and you and your household will clearly see the gray concrete wall underneath them.

In this case, you will have to paint them on top directly over the varnish, which will be very difficult to do, or remove them and stick new ones on, which will certainly lead to additional costs. It makes sense to study the issue before work, and then start actually varnishing the wallpaper.

Pasting the walls of the room with white wallpaper for painting

What should you do if you want the room to have white varnished walls? Buy white wallpaper, glue it to the walls, and apply the same paint on top. In this case, the paper will become strong and washable, and will last you 10 years or more. Repair is always a cost, it is more profitable to carry out high-quality work once and forget about this issue for decades, this is what thrifty people do.

Other varnishes

After applying varnish to the canvas and drying it completely, the wallpaper becomes washable, which many housewives certainly like. This coating is easy to care for, and the walls in the room will seem just as fresh even after 5 years. The advantage is that the surface of the canvas will not wear off over time due to the touch of hands, for example, near switches or on the corners of walls. In addition, varnished canvases look brighter and the pattern on them is clearer.

To avoid mistakes, ask the people who did the renovations, what varnish did they use to improve their paper wallpaper? Some advise using “Alpina”, others call it “Azure from Tikkurila”, others are very happy with the familiar “VAK-A-104”. Which one to choose, in principle, you can buy the first one you find on sale. To be on the safe side, ask the store salesperson which composition is right for you in your current circumstances.

Glossy varnish Alpina

Remember about the peculiarities of working with varnish, because if you apply it to light-colored wallpaper, it will become translucent, and the wall will be visible through it. Even dark paper versions will be slightly translucent. How to be in this case? Prime the entire surface of the canvas with PVA glue. To do this, it is diluted with cold water in the proportion of 1 liter of PVA glue per 10 liters of water.

This means that when you cover a room with paper wallpaper, let it dry for a day and only then apply the adhesive solution to all the walls. You can try this method on a piece as a test. If everything goes well, prime the entire room.

Treat with PVA glue

Let's take a closer look at the technology of applying PVA glue as a primer on all walls covered with paper wallpaper. If you have started a major renovation and you need to varnish the walls in all rooms, then it turns out to be quite expensive. A more economical option is to prepare an emulsion from glue, in particular construction PVA.

Make the solution as follows: take 1 liter of PVA glue for 10 liters of clean cold water. Then the composition is mixed well. The resulting emulsion should be used to cover the paper covering on the walls. For convenience, take a large brush and, starting from the top, move down, evenly applying the emulsion.

To apply to the walls you will need a large amount of glue

Some owners also apply acrylic varnish after this coating. It is not necessary to do this immediately during a major overhaul; you can paint it later, after a while.

If you are afraid of ruining something, test the mixture on a small area, then wait until the composition dries and evaluate the result. If you are satisfied with the result, then treat all the walls this way. Now they are protected from dirt and you don’t have to worry about accidentally touching the wallpaper with greasy fingers. It will be enough to wipe the area with a soapy sponge to remove dirt.

These simple methods make it easy to keep the decorative coating of paper wallpaper in good condition for a long time. If you don’t like difficulties, buy durable and wear-resistant vinyl analogues.

A budget option

The simplest and most affordable solution to the question of how to protect the wallpaper near the bed is to cover it with varnish or PVA glue. It is better to apply these compositions with a roller, as this will reduce material consumption compared to a brush. It is better to apply 2 layers, but it is worth considering that the surface of the wallpaper will become a little darker.

In the children's room you can hang a large poster, poster or, for example, a map of the starry sky. They can be easily replaced at any time without resorting to large material costs.

Characteristics

Applying varnish first of all involves creating a protective layer on the finishing material, which protects it from unwanted contacts with the outside world. But these are not all the useful properties of this coating:

  • After drying and polymerization, the varnish coating perfectly resists moisture, which can be destructive for paper or natural wallpaper.
  • You can always wash the wall with a regular soap solution to remove dirt and grease, thereby easily maintaining cleanliness and order.
  • The varnish reflects sunlight, thereby protecting the decorative wallpaper from fading. This is a long-known advantage of the material; just remember how long the lining on the balcony retains its original color.
  • The strength of the protective layer protects the wallpaper from mechanical influences; now the wallpaper is not afraid of scratches, chips, and dents.

Light walls look beautiful, but quickly get dirty, especially in a nursery

Of course, I would like to ignore the disadvantages of this method of strengthening the finishing material on the wall, but we will talk about them:

  • First of all, I would like to note that the varnish adds gloss to the surface of the walls, so minor defects come out. If the walls were prepared well, then such problems will not be visible, even when gluing extra thin paper or photo wallpaper.
  • In order to apply varnish to the walls, you need to buy it, which means additional repair costs. Of course, they are not very large compared to the total volume, but they are worth taking into account.
  • When drying, the varnish narrows slightly, as a result of which it tightens the wallpaper. In some cases, the physics of this process will allow the wallpaper joints to separate.

If these negative aspects do not bother you, you can safely go to the store for a jar of varnish, we will apply it to the walls.

Need an idea. How to decorate a section of wall in a room.

According to the arrangement, the bed stands sideways to the concrete wall. Wallpaper is wiped off from blankets/bedspreads. And besides, sometimes you just want to sit with your back to the wall. Also the wallpaper is erased.

Those. You need to decorate a section of the wall 2 m long, 1 m high with something 1) Abrasion resistant 2) Harmless (I’ve read a lot about MDF, chipboard, plastic, etc. I don’t want to inhale formaldehyde or phenol) 3) Just look normal in the room. Those. You can screw a sheet of plywood, but it’s not pretty.

Please advise examples of such finishing and materials. I'm having a hard time with ideas.

Hang the carpet. Colors are at your discretion. You can choose any size. If you're interested, I'll tell you where

Indeed, a carpet or ala European tapestry will be more modern.

Cover with cork? I had this in my last apartment, it’s very nice to touch it. For greater wear resistance, you can coat it with varnish. But now we still need to look for non-harmful coatings and materials. Something not the most favorable is attached to everyone.

alexVS, didn’t you look at the traffic jam?? almost didn’t make it in time. got ahead

Traditional wool carpet! It also doesn't feel cold. And if the area is large, then there is excellent sound insulation from noisy neighbors behind the wall. Well, now you can find any drawing. Even here:

Application of liquid wallpaper

Adding varnish to the mixture when preparing liquid wallpaper will add additional shine. The range of colors allows you to choose a shade that will fit well into the interior. This type of covering is used in the area next to the bed because it has a number of undeniable advantages:

  • moisture resistance;
  • does not fade;
  • safety (hypoallergenic);
  • low maintenance (applied to different surfaces);
  • possibility of additional decoration.

Wallpaper cleaning and washing products

In cases where you know exactly the cause of contamination, folk methods can be more effective than store-bought remedies:

  • Baking soda. Removes greasy stains, suitable for all types of washable wallpaper. Proportions - 2 tbsp. spoons per 1 liter of water.
  • Baby powder. Copes with fresh grease stains. Sprinkle the desired area and leave for half an hour - the powder will absorb all the grease and you can remove it with a dry cloth.
  • Soap solution. Removes fresh traces of felt-tip pens, pens and pencils. Proportions: 100 ml of liquid soap per 1 liter of water.
  • Lemon acid. It will help you get rid of drawings made with alcohol markers and greasy deposits. Proportions - 2-3 spoons per 1 glass of water.
  • Alcohol. Effective against old stubborn grease stains, marks from stickers and tape.
  • Hydrogen peroxide. Cleans wallpaper from blood stains.
  • Hydrochloric acid. Removes traces of brilliant green from the surface.
  • Stationery eraser. Removes greasy deposits and fingerprints.
  • Vinegar. Effective against glue residues. Use a 9% solution.
  • Iron. Removes fresh greasy stains. You only need to iron the wallpaper through a sheet of paper.

After cleaning with any of the products described above, be sure to rinse the area with water.

There are no special wallpaper cleaning products, but there are universal compositions that can be used:

  • HG is a phosphate-free cleaner for cleaning plastic, window sills, MDF (medium density fiberboard), and washable wallpaper. Removes stubborn dirt, nicotine stains, and does not discolor the surface.
  • Pronto - removes fresh grease stains, light dirt, fingerprints.
  • Freshbubble - liquid soap, kitchen spray or floor cleaning gel. Copes with greasy stains and plaque.
  • Vanish is a carpet cleaner with rich foam. Suitable for cleaning any dirt.

Zoning the bedside space

The protection of the wall covering near the bed will be fully ensured if this space is originally decorated using natural materials:

  • silk-screen printing is expensive, but for the area near the bed you won’t need much;
  • cork - soft elastic material that allows air to pass through;
  • bamboo covering;
  • wooden - a varnished product will emphasize the structure of the wood, protect it from moisture, drying and cracking. Laminate is also used instead of wood. If desired, you can finish the entire wall up to the ceiling or just its lower part.

Accent coating

If you are not a fan of objects hanging over the bed and are generally a minimalist, then you can decorate the wall simply by highlighting it with a different color or material. Moreover, you can make the entire wall an accent, or you can only make part of it - along the borders of the bed. It looks interesting when such a strip goes to the ceiling or even to the opposite wall.

Sophisticated patterned wallpaper that easily dominates the space, or bright paint will find its place in this area. The wall behind the bed can be decorated with a wooden panel or imitation brick - by any means that harmonizes with your interior. An alternative is to use patterns made using a stencil or interior stickers. More about accent walls in these posts:

Soft panels

The bedside space will be beautifully and reliably protected by decorative elements that will add zest and make the room more comfortable. You can order them in a store or make them yourself. To do this, cut out parts of the required size from plywood or chipboard, apply a soft base (foam rubber or padding polyester) and attach with a stapler. Then choose a material that suits the situation and also secure it with metal staples.

Types and features of wallpaper:

  • Paper. There is no protective layer and cannot be washed with water. Can be dry cleaned with a cloth or eraser.
  • Vinyl. Two-layer wallpaper: the bottom layer is paper, the top layer is vinyl. Wash with a damp cloth and soap solution. The resistance of the material to water depends on the type of protective coating. Foam and compact vinyl are vulnerable to mechanical damage (hard-bristled brushes) and chemicals; silk-screen printing can withstand brushes and aggressive compounds.
  • Non-woven fabrics are pressed paper and fabric fibers bonded with polymer. It is important to distinguish between completely non-woven wallpaper and non-woven-based canvases. The first ones can be washed and painted. Caring for the latter depends on the characteristics of the top layer. For example, if a layer of vinyl is glued to the non-woven material, you need to care for such wallpaper in the same way as regular vinyl wallpaper.
  • Bamboo - sections of the top layer of bamboo glued to fabric. Wash with non-abrasive products.
  • Glass wallpaper. Material made of durable fiberglass with a loop structure. Can be washed with a damp sponge, do not rub.

Shelves and niches

A beautiful and useful type of decoration. Books, toys, small vases and various necessary little things are placed on the shelves.

There are many more ways to protect the coating. The demonstrated imagination will save nerves, time and money for new repairs. You can love a small closet, as long as everyone feels cozy and comfortable here.

Long shelf

This solution is now in trend, and deservedly so - it looks elegant, beautiful and also functional. A horizontal line visually expands the space, and if you paint the wall below and above the shelf in different colors, the effect will be enhanced.

Choose a shelf that is not wide so that you can put small decor, posters and photographs on it. If you are afraid that all this will fall on your head at night, stop on a shelf with a side. If the shelf is very narrow, a curtain string stretched a short distance above it will also cope with this task. On such a design you can even place a book or a laptop (vertically), put small items and hang glasses on a string - you see, you will be able to do without a bedside table.

How to make wallpaper varnish yourself?

A mixture of borax and shellac is a good substitute for ready-made varnishes. True, the composition is dark; to lighten it, you need to add sanadrak (aromatic resin) or some kind of white. Its recipe:

  1. Boil 400 ml of water in an enamel saucepan.
  2. Add 20 gr. Boers. It can be pre-mixed with sandrac diluted in a small amount of alcohol.
  3. After complete dilution of the previous ingredients, add 50 g. shellac, adding it in small portions, stirring constantly.
  4. When the welded varnish has cooled, it should be filtered.

Some DIYers try to use improvised means such as hairspray. As practice has shown, nothing good comes from such experiments.
