Start with the sides
Making a sofa out of wood with your own hands is not an easy task, but it can be done. Let's consider the sidewall production stage.
- Cut out the frame crossbars A - 19x38x775 - 4 pcs. and frame racks B - 19x38x343 - 4 pcs. Then assemble the frame and align the ends. To connect, use wood glue and clamp with clamps. Part connection diagrams are shown below. Check the squareness of the frames and compliance with the overall dimensions of 381x775 mm. Set the assembly aside and let it dry. Next, after drying, make auxiliary holes and screw screws into them, as indicated in the drawing. We recommend using countersunk screws with a length of 35 mm.
Right side of folding sofas
- Make bosses C - 19x76x95 - 8 pcs., which will ensure thorough fastening of the bed ties, they will be discussed further. Install them in the place indicated in the drawing using glue and secure them with clamps.
- Next, make panels D - 19x775x381 - 4 pcs. On the front side of all four parts, make a 3x6 mm chamfer along all edges.
- How to make a folding sofa with your own hands, to do this you need to take 2 panels D, which will be the inner sides of the sides, fasten them, for example, with double-sided tape to each other - with their front sides facing each other. Can be secured with clamps. On the panels, mark where the holes will be made, which will then be connected by slots.
Transformable sofa. Interior side panel Use a Forstner drill bit to drill holes.
- Connect the holes tangentially with lines. Disconnect parts D from each other. Then use a jigsaw to cut the slots along the marked lines. After this, be sure to check the uniformity of the width along the entire length with a ruler, tape measure or dowel with a diameter of 19 mm, in order to further ensure easy unfolding of the entire structure. Finish with a wood file if necessary.
- Remove 3mm bevels along all edges of the slots.
- Paint the folds that were made according to step 3 with a dark stain, for example brown.
Use masking tape to paint carefully.
- Use wood glue to attach the panels to the frames. Check that the edges of the panels match the dimensions of the frame.
- File the side parts of the facings E - 19x76x445(419) - 4 pcs., the upper and lower parts of the facings F - 19x76x840(813) - 4 pcs. The parts must be made with an allowance of approximately 25-30 mm. Then saw off the ends at a 45-degree angle, controlling the final length. The main thing is that the parts fit close to each other without gaps. Glue parts E and F to the sides and secure in this position with clamps. Let the glue dry and sand the entire surface.

Wood or pallet frame?
Having decided to make a corner sofa, people must competently approach the choice of materials. They must be environmentally friendly, safe, durable and easy to use.
Advice: for beginners in carpentry, you should avoid materials such as laminated boards and large-section timber. Because they are expensive and difficult to process.
As for the variety of materials from which a sofa frame can be made, these include:
- Pallets.
This material is budget-friendly. The process of making a corner sofa from pallets will take a minimum of free time. As a result, you will get an original model that harmoniously fits into loft, Provence or minimalism styles. - Beam. It is used in the manufacture of load-bearing parts of the frame. Glued laminated timber is most often used to create sidewalls. Its advantages include a perfectly smooth surface, ease of use and high technical performance.
- Plywood. It is of high quality, durable and easy to use. The unique properties of plywood are directly related to its production. Thanks to a special technology for gluing veneer sheets, the material has high strength. Plywood is much stronger than timber. Frames made from it do not deform during long-term use, do not absorb moisture, and do not dry out.
- Natural array. This type of furniture is a classic and is in great demand. Wooden furniture looks harmonious in different interiors.
It is distinguished by its naturalness, environmental friendliness, aesthetics and long service life. You can make a sofa frame from different types of wood: birch, pine, oak, larch, beech, walnut, ash. Each individual option has its own advantages and technical characteristics. The frame of a pine sofa, although it has an affordable price, will not please its owners with its high quality. It is quite difficult to find high quality wood on the market. Because of this, the sofa will quickly fail and lose its attractive appearance. To prevent mold and fungi from appearing on the product, you must choose well-dried wood. Birch in the manufacture of frames is also affordable in terms of price, but has higher quality indicators. Such products will turn out to be quite durable and reliable.
Reference: the most reliable and durable are sofas whose frame is made of timber and plywood or only plywood. If you plan to make a large model, then it is recommended to make the bottom bar of the product from wood or chipboard.
Legs and armrests
The design of the sofa, in addition to the sides, seat and back, also consists of legs and armrests. Let's look at the stages of their manufacture.
- Cut out the parts of the legs G - 19x76x57 - 12 pcs., the front parts of the legs H - 19x76x76 - 4 pcs., ties I - 19x76x775 - 2 pcs. and spacers J - 19x64x800 - 4 pcs. Glue parts G and H together as shown in the picture. Then attach the assemblies to parts I - use glue and screws.
- Sand the assemblies G/H/I. If you want to stain, do it at this stage.
- Glue the J pieces to the bottom of the sides, centering them. Then assemble the side panel G/H/I.
- We cut out the armrests K - 19x4x902 - 2 pcs. Secure them with clamps to the sidewalls, after applying a layer of wood glue.
The armrests must be installed independently so that the interior is flush with the interior side panels and extends equally at the front and rear.

Sofa book - what is it?
This type of furniture should be in every home. Due to its compactness, functionality and convenience, the Eurobook deserves respect.
The design of the Eurobook is simple. There is a movable part that extends due to special fittings. If you plan to make it yourself, then it is better to make a moving part on wheels.
During the daytime, the furniture is used as a sofa, and at night it turns into a spacious sleeping place.
When folded, this sofa can accommodate up to 6-7 people in a sitting position. This is convenient and allows you to spend time together with family and friends. And if you have guests from distant lands, you can always fold out the sofa, creating a comfortable sleeping place for two.
The most common is a sofa with a Eurobook folding mechanism.
Back and seat
Let's look at how to make the back and seat of a folding sofa with your own hands.
- Cut out the posts M - 38x64x787 - 2 pcs., the top crossbar of the backrest N - 38x64x1892 - 1 pc. and lower backrest crossbar O - 38x64x1854 - 1 pc., side bars Q - 38x64x657 - 2 pcs., lining R - 38x64x305 - 2 pcs., rear seat crossbar S - 38x64x1813 - 1 pc. and front seat crossbar T - 38x64x1889 - 1 pc.
Note. There are different types of holes and they are used for different types of fasteners.
- Make counterbored holes and plain holes for parts M and Q as shown in the pictures below. Next, attach the lining R to the bars Q using glue.

- For the next stage of making a sofa bed with your own hands, you need to use a saw machine with a grooved disc. It is necessary to make grooves on the M posts and folds on the N and S parts (study the diagrams), then make 76 mm wide folds on the ends of the T part.
Drawing of the back of a folding sofa
- The drawing shows tongues on parts M, N, O, Q, S and T, let's look at how to make them. Attach a 6mm slotted cutter to the milling machine. Place a piece of 12 mm plywood next to the cutter, from which parts T and U will be made in the next steps. The height of the cutter should be set so that the top of the cutter can be aligned with the top surface of the plywood. Next, make the tongues.
Top and front crossbars
- Using an R12 cutter, make curves on parts N and T, as shown in the picture above.
- Make bevels at an angle of 15 degrees on the N, T crossbars.
- At the ends of parts N, T and S you need to make holes with a counterbore with a diameter of 10 mm and a depth of 8 mm. Drill mounting holes for self-tapping screws in their centers.
- Next you need back panel P - 12x543x1829 - 1 pc. and seat panel U - 12x632x1749 - 1 pc. Make folds on them along the entire perimeter - these will be ridges so that they fit into the grooves of parts M, N, O, Q, S and T.
- Using wood glue, assemble the back and seat. Clamp them with clamps. Screw in the screws as shown in the assembly drawings. Install wooden plugs into the counterbores. You can make the plugs yourself.
- Make stops V - 19x38x152 - 2 pcs. and cut a 45 degree bevel at one end. Secure them with screws.
- You need to make four rods 57 mm long, 19 mm in diameter. Remove the chamfers from the ends, apply glue to them and insert them into the holes of part M according to the drawing.
- Make 4 spacer washers from 6 mm plywood. The outer diameter of the washers is 38, the inner is 19 mm.

Required Tools
In order to assemble the “book” on your own, you don’t need too many tools. All you need to have on hand:
- wrenches and adjustable wrenches;
- screwdriver;
- screwdriver;
- assembly instructions (provided by the manufacturer if the furniture is new);
- structural components of the sofa.
In addition, an assistant is needed (since assembling the “book” without the help of others is not an easy task, due to the large weight and significant size of the structure, it is necessary to involve a partner).
You will need about an hour of your time and a little patience.
Finishing of parts
- Make drawers L - 38x137x1905 - 2 pcs. Use zip ties to mark the centers of the mounting holes, then drill additional mounting holes. See the figure below for an example.
How to make a sofa book with your own hands. Final assembly diagram
- Sand and sand the parts L. Round off the sharp edges.
- Apply stain, varnish, paint, etc. on all necessary surfaces.
- Fasten the ties to the drawers.
How to unfold a Eurobook
Unlike a book sofa, the seat of which needs to be lifted up until it clicks, the Eurobook does not require such effort. The sofa mechanism works in such a way that the seat simply moves forward and the back rests on the free space.
Folding mechanism for the Eurobook sofa
In addition, it often happens that in folding sofas the system that is supposed to unfold them does not work or breaks down. Unfolding the sofa becomes problematic. As a rule, this does not happen with a Eurobook. The folded Eurobook sofa is very compact, does not take up much space, and is comfortable. In addition , the standard size of a sleeping place in a book sofa is 209 x 90 cm. The dimensions of a standard sleeping place in a Eurobook are 145 x 209.

Peculiarities
Everyone knows that a sofa plays an important role in any residential or non-residential premises.
On it, people receive guests, relax in the company of their nearest and dearest while watching TV or playing board games, and sleep at night. Recently, instead of the usual straight models, people prefer to install corner sofas, which are distinguished by functionality and rational use of free space. Before you start making a sofa, you need to decide on its:
- Appointment. Think in advance about which room the product will be placed in. The dimensions and design of the furniture will directly depend on this. A corner sofa can be built for a comfortable family time in the living room, or you can make a small product for the kitchen.
- Shape and size.
Here it is worth starting only from personal wishes and preferences, as well as from the features of the room where it will stand. For small rooms it is better to make compact and ergonomic models, and in a spacious living room it is worth installing a roomy and large corner sofa. As for the shape, it can be varied: in the form of the letter L, U-shaped, with or without armrests. - Filler. As a rule, foam rubber, padding polyester and holofiber are used as filler for upholstered furniture. Their choice must be taken with full responsibility. Here, the thickness of the material, its density, elasticity and resilience, as well as rigidity play an important role.
- Functionality. Some consumers prefer furniture with spacious drawers where they can store bedding or personal items. Also, corner sofas are often equipped with shelves and bookcases.
