DIY watch decor: making a masterpiece from Chinese stamping (44 photos)

Wall clocks not only show the time, but can also serve as a stylish interior decoration. You can make a beautiful wall clock with your own hands, starting from the already created design of the room in which it will hang. This simple and exciting work will not take much time.

You can decorate an existing dial, you can use scrap material that you can always find at home, make a base and get a new thing by removing the mechanism with hands from an old clock, or you can simply decorate a section of the wall and attach the hands with the battery-powered mechanism directly to the wall.

How to decorate a watch yourself

How can you make your watch, stamped at a Chinese factory and having thousands of clones, the only and exclusive model? Moreover, if after renovation they do not fit the new style at all. Did you know that there are completely inexpensive means to ensure that this essential kitchen attribute will continue to serve as a source of pride for your household and the admiration of your guests?

What are the benefits of needlework?

The main advantage of handmade creations is that you don’t have to worry about manufacturing standards, which can lead to defects.

The most important thing here is you, consisting of creativity and imagination. You are a master and creator. Any craft you make will give people joy and beauty.

But before you start creating, you need to understand the basic ideas of making crafts. More on this in the next heading.

Updating watches using decoupage technique

Decoupage is a way of decorating objects using napkins.

Do you think this clock was store bought or repurposed from a regular old one that had been hanging on the wall for several years?

Floral clock decor

Even a novice master can master decorating a watch with his own hands using this technique; the only condition here is accuracy and perseverance. To restore walkers in this way, you just need to stock up on decoupage or ordinary beautiful paper napkins, which are sold in supermarkets. An important point is that they should be two- or three-layer (they are more durable).

    Required tools and materials:
  • beautiful napkin;
  • PVA glue;
  • brush;
  • white paint (you can buy acrylic at a hardware store)
  • fine skin;
  • watches in need of alteration;
  • file;
  • alcohol, acetone or white spirit to degrease the surface;
  • soft cloth.

Watches with metal decor

    The update steps are as follows:
  1. The device is disassembled and the clock mechanism is removed.
  2. If the old picture was pasted, it is removed. If the design has been applied to the surface, it is degreased and covered in several layers of white paint with intermediate drying.
  3. The surface is sanded, removing all roughness.
  4. Remove the top layer of paint from the napkin, try it on the watch and carefully tear out (do not cut out) the beautiful middle so that the clear boundaries of the gluing are not visible.
  5. It is better to carry out the next manipulation near the sink. The napkin is placed face down on the file. Moisten it generously with water from a spray bottle so that it floats on the file. Carefully straighten the folds with a brush. Then, tilting the file, drain off the excess water. The napkin is placed in the place where it is supposed to be glued and, carefully lifting it on one side with a brush, remove the file.
  6. The paper is coated with a mixture of water and PVA glue (1:1). Allow to dry; small wrinkles can be removed by lightly going over them with fine sandpaper.
  7. The product is coated with several layers of acrylic varnish. A novice needleworker should not spend money on expensive professional glue. You can purchase acrylic substances for saunas and baths in construction stores.

The final touch is assembling the chronometer. Then the product is mounted on the wall and the result is admired.

Butterflies

The idea with butterflies is good for creating a new mechanism. A large butterfly is cut out of a vinyl record, and small insects are glued around the perimeter as a frame.

Several moths flying into the distance look fascinating. The smallest ones can be placed under the chronometer, larger moths can be glued diagonally or vertically above it.

Colored or metallized cardboard is also suitable for making butterflies.

Using craquelure in watch decoration

If simply using a decoupage napkin is boring, then you can complicate the work and create an imitation of an antique clock. Layers of special varnishes and structural pastes are applied to the product, as a result of which one layer breaks the other and cracks form, giving the craft a touch of antiquity.

What is the best way to transform an old product? There are many ways, some resort to craquelure.

    In this photograph of a watch made using the craquelure technique, you can see the following as decoration:
  • white openwork napkin;
  • vintage picture in the center;
  • white thin lace;
  • rhinestones and half beads.

The paper napkin, second hand and dial are painted gold; gold paint has been rubbed into the cracks, which allows them to be classified as a fashionable vintage style.

Another work made using craquelure. Butterflies cut out of plywood and decorated with decoupage napkins attract attention.

Quilling

The use of ready-made paper strips greatly simplifies the creation of non-standard backgrounds. They turn out to be voluminous, which must be taken into account when fixing them under the arrows. You can arrange patterns collected from quilling instead of the usual indexing. But small paper figures (flowers, leaves, animals) can be placed outside the base. In this way, the original frames are assembled. But the most interesting option when using paper strips is to create full-fledged paintings. For example, silhouettes of people, animals, and images of musical instruments are made from them. It is allowed to produce landscapes and city views. Such paper pictures need to be glued to a plywood base, leaving a place in the center for installing the chronometer mechanism.

Decorating watches using alter scrap technique

This method involves decorating products with various volumetric details and is characterized by a multi-layered composition. It's always something unusual and creative. “Alter” translated from English means “change”, “remake”, “improve”, “update”.

Decorative clock made from a mirror

In cases where it is not possible to repair a broken alarm clock, it is advisable to restore it using this method, giving it a second life.

Look how beautifully you can decorate an old broken alarm clock. I want to endlessly look at the details.

Alter scrap uses literally everything: remnants of lace, beads, scraps of chains, keys, flowers made of fabric and paper, various stickers, etc.

Even old spare parts from an alarm clock and fragments of a figurine are suitable as decor.

And look at this beauty. Don't you want to create something like this?

From vinyl records

An ordinary vinyl record can be decorated in an unusual way using beautiful pictures. Decoupage of the surface should be carried out after thoroughly treating the base with the finest sandpaper. This will allow you to remove remaining stickers and level the surface of the record. Using a drill or jigsaw, the plates can be cut out according to prepared silhouettes (teapots, cups, hearts, superhero icons, animal outlines). And using the following instructions, you will be able to make “flowing” clock mechanisms from the paintings of Salvador Dali:

  1. Place the plate in the oven for 2 minutes (temperature about 180 degrees).
  2. Place the heated plate on the board. Start stretching and bending the vinyl (leave the central part flat).
  3. Install the chronometer mechanism.

Decorate old clocks with plastic spoons

An interesting design solution (and also very cheap) would be to decorate a round wall clock with disposable plastic spoons.

Even a complete non-professional can bring such an idea to life. Will you take on this job?

What is needed to create such a “sun” on the wall?

    You will need:
  • round clock;
  • cardboard from the box;
  • scissors;
  • ceiling glue or any other;
  • about 250 spoons;
  • paint of the desired shade.

Clock made from sawn wood

Before starting work, determine the size of the product. Then:

  1. A ring is cut out of cardboard, the inner side of which is equal to the diameter of the watch, and the outer side should be slightly smaller than the estimated volume needed as a result of decoration.
  2. The handles of the spoons are cut off, leaving very small stumps. In the outer circle, at a short distance from each other, they begin to glue them. The next row of spoons is glued so that they cover the space between the previous ones. And thus all the rows are filled.
  3. They are dyed in the desired color.
  4. Glue the cardboard to the finished watch.
  5. Hanging a chronometer at your permanent place of residence

Plastic spoons are easy to paint with spray paint.

With print

Fashionable timepieces can be made using a variety of prints. It is recommended to glue printed images to a primed plywood sheet. Similar models are sold by many well-known manufacturers. Round bases can be imitation of planets or stars (Earth, Moon, Saturn), porcelain plates. Fans of sports games will love the images of soccer and basketball balls. The circle base is suitable for gluing prints in the form of berries and fruits (watermelon, cherry, currant, apple). The product, the base of which has the shape of a balloon, will also look original. You will need to glue an empty basket or a basket with traveler figures to the bottom. Classic prints include images of landmarks located in the center of the chronometer. Such products are universal and can beautifully complement any room.

Decorating old watches with textiles

You can make a watch an interesting interior detail by decorating it with textiles. Lace will add airiness and romance to the chronometer and hide the shabby case.

How to decorate a wall clock using textiles can be seen in this photo.

How do you like this transformation of the device? All you need is a twisted rope, braid, lace, a brush, tape (to close the joint), glue and scissors. They will look great in the kitchen of a housewife who loves ruffles and frills, complete with curtains and covers for stools or chairs.

You can restore an old shabby watch using twisted rope with tassels, lace, artificial flowers and beads

Textile

Textiles for decoration can have bright colors, interesting patterns or textures. The work involves linen, satin, cotton, jacquard, organza and even burlap. Gluing three-dimensional decorative elements to textiles is easy. Usually these are clay figurines, twigs, dried flowers.

Sometimes the fabric is pre-embroidered with acrylic thread, beads, satin ribbons, sequins, large beads are sewn on, and rhinestones are glued on.

In addition, jute thread, thick cords, weaving and knitting are used in decoration, based on the general style and structure of the fabric. The finished base fabric can be quite dense or delicate, openwork.

To maintain their shape, it is recommended to starch or coat openwork products with glue. Dry them on a flat surface, fixing them with a press if necessary.

Do-it-yourself painting and painting of watches

In a country house decorated in retro style, shabby and artificially aged wall walkers are quite suitable. Painting can be done with the paints remaining in the household and, without waiting for complete drying, lightly rub the surface with a cloth (to create scuffs and the appearance that the walkers have been repainted many times).

To build such a clock, you will need a minimum of knowledge and skills.

That's not bad either. You can original paint the surface to your liking. Do you like this painting?

The style in which this table clock is made can be classified as shabby chic. Faint decoupage in the middle and some wear on the body give the impression that it has been repainted many times and has been exposed to the sun. In this way you can make an almost antique thing.

    Creating abrasions is not difficult at all:
  1. Paint the watch case black and let dry.
  2. Apply white paint to a dry layer and, without waiting for it to dry completely, remove the top layer of paint in the right places with light touches.

After drying, it is recommended to cover the craft with several layers of acrylic varnish.

This watch combines decoupage of the inner part, which is located under the glass, and painting of the outer case in gold from a spray can. This is an example of a very simple product update.

Drawing an electronic format

This is the easiest way to quickly draw a modern prototype that works in 24 format. How to draw:

  1. Let's draw a simple parallelepiped.
  2. Add a dial in the shape of a rectangle.

Additionally, you can add an antenna and lighting. If the drawing is needed for sketching, just shade the corners. To make the time look recognizable, lines are added for the numbers. This can be done with HB and 2B pencils.

Decorating a wall clock with coffee beans

    It's very easy to update a round wall clock with your own hands. Decorating with coffee beans is quite popular. There are many transformation options. All you need is:
  • watch;
  • coffee beans;
  • glue "Moment";
  • desire and time.

Materials for work

Clocks are made for children as educational props. Older children are able to make real specimens from scrap materials. An old clock, crafts from which will turn out to be original, will serve as a decorative element in the house. The material for the dial can be:

  • cardboard;
  • paper;
  • disposable tableware;
  • ropes;
  • threads;
  • pencils and markers;
  • natural materials;
  • fabrics;
  • used CDs, other materials.

Decorating a watch with shells

What do vacationers bring home from the sea? Probably shells, which then gather dust idle on the antesols for years. There is a great way to update your watch with these seafood gifts. The simplest trick is to stick shells on the body.

Provencal notes

If the external appearance of the watch is not suitable for restoration, but the mechanism is still working, you can cut out a case of any shape from plywood and allow the watch mechanism to work to its full potential.

From a bicycle wheel

Using a bicycle spoked wheel will help you create designer decor for the interior of a living room or children's room. This product will successfully highlight the Provence, loft and modern styles. A rim with a diameter of 13-14 inches is suitable for work. The manufacture of a wheel chronometer is carried out according to the following instructions:

  1. Cleaning the rim of debris.
  2. Polishing the metal surface (with sandpaper or special paste).
  3. Gluing to the back of the chronometer mechanism (the pin for the arrows is threaded through the center of the wheel).
  4. Installation of arrows and adjustment of the mechanism.

Note! For a rim with spokes, a small mechanism with long arrows will do. Otherwise, the product will not stand out.
