How to knit an ottoman from knitted yarn

Finish knitting, fasten the thread. Weave a braid about 50 cm long from knitted yarn, tightening it well at the ends.

For knitting, we needed the thickest knitting needles we could find in the store - 9mm. The knitting needles themselves are good, but the fishing line is too thin, so I had to distribute the knitting so that it does not break.

What to knit an ottoman from:

This question was perhaps the most important. Regular threads didn't work. Cutting knitted clothes into strips is not an option, because I don’t have so many unnecessary plain knitted clothes. The choice fell on clotheslines. Just not synthetic ones (although one was purchased for testing), but cotton ones. And here the following difficulties arose: firstly, cotton ropes are not solid (it is a kind of “case” of thin threads stuffed with cotton wool) and therefore quite heavy, and secondly, it is quite problematic to buy them, especially in the quantities that I needed . Very soon, the sellers of all the surrounding hardware stores already knew me as the crazy lady who buys all the ropes. “Everything” is a strong word, because as a rule they don’t have more than 2-3 on sale. And it took quite a lot of them to make the ottoman. I’ve already lost count, but at least 20 are for sure, and maybe all 30. The knitting process was constantly interrupted due to the fact that the ropes were running out. As a result, I knitted the ottoman for more than a month, although the knitting itself progressed very quickly.

First I knitted a long rectangle. Then I tied the sides together with rope so that it looked like a wide skirt. Then, in the same way, I pulled the bottom together with a rope and it turned out to be a bag. Next, this bag had to be filled with something. I wanted to see the result as soon as possible, I was too lazy to go to the store, so all the old and unnecessary clothes went into stuffing. I just carefully put all my old jackets, pants and T-shirts in there. This makes the ottoman not as fluffy and round as it would be from holofiber or foam rubber, and it’s also quite heavy. But a whole shelf in the closet was freed up. And finally, I pulled the top of the ottoman off with a rope. The ottoman turned out to be quite heavy and not very soft, you can’t call it a pillow anymore. But it is very comfortable to sit on.

What is an ottoman?

An ottoman is a low seat that is similar to a chair, but differs from it in some respects. First, an ottoman is usually shorter in height, second, it does not have handles and may not have legs. Essentially, an ottoman is a large pillow with an internal frame, usually made of wood or plywood. But there are also frameless models.

What's good about the ottoman is its small size.

It's a great space saver if needed. And with the help of large ottomans you can add solidity to a spacious room.

This “independent” piece of furniture “came” to us from France, England and Germany around the eighteenth century. Now make the base and top of the pouf. To do this, take an unnecessary cardboard box and cut out two circles (squares) of the desired size. Tape the cardboard to the finished frame with tape.

The ottoman should definitely be soft. Foam rubber can handle this quite well. Wrap the frame with foam rubber of the required size, do not forget about the top and bottom.

All that remains is to sew the cover. For the cover, choose furniture fabric - the most practical material. Sew a zipper on the side of the cover. This will make it possible to wash the cover or replace it with another one in the future.

The product is ready! This ottoman will live in your home for a long time, because plastic is more durable than wood.

If you don’t have a sweater in your closet that you are willing to sacrifice, but you love to do needlework, you can knit “clothes” for your furniture. Such things look especially cozy in winter, as they create the impression of warmth and comfort. If you knit well, the process will not take you much time. Perhaps all you need to do is sit in front of the TV for a couple of evenings - and the product is ready!

Regular garter stitch will do. Choose your favorite thread color. It is better if the yarn is mostly synthetic (70% acrylic, 30% wool). The product will not stretch or shrink when washed, and it is much easier to care for. If your ottoman is square or rectangular, knit two pieces of the desired size with knitting needles. On average, one centimeter of garter stitch is two loops. This way you can calculate the number of loops based on the width of the pouf. Throw on 4-6 loops so that the parts can be sewn together and the pouf fits freely into the finished product. In this case, the cover will be put on top. There is no need to sew on the bottom.

If you want to knit a “clothes” for a round pouf, then you will need to simply make an elongated rectangle, the width of which will be equal to the height of the pouf, and the length to its diameter. Plus a separate piece for the top. After wrapping the rectangle around the circumference, try it on to see if the size fits. Having removed it, sew its sides from the wrong side, sew on the top piece, turn it inside out and put it on.

Yarn

For knitted poufs, wool or half-woolen yarn, acrylic in half with wool, 100 m thick / 50 g in a skein, is best suited.

Depending on the size of the ottoman, you may need from 500 g to 1600 grams.

It is very popular now to knit from knitted yarn and such a knitted pouf looks very beautiful, neat, and bright. But imagine the cost of such a product and the consumption of knitted yarn for a pouf, if a skein of 50 grams and only 30 m long costs 350 rubles! Well, perhaps you have a lot of old T-shirts from which you cut yarn, the principles of knitting from it are the same as simple poufs from wool yarn, only you will need to take 8-10 hooks.

In my opinion, this is the case, as with rugs, when you can use cheap yarn, and by choosing a beautiful color and pattern, you can end up making a very good rug.

Lining

The lining can be sewn from any fabric, old knitted items. Two parts are cut out of it according to the size of the pouf and sewed together along the edge, leaving a large hole. After stuffing with filling material, the hole is sutured.

Filler

How to fill a knitted pouf:

cotton wool
foam rubber
padding polyester
holofiber
polystyrene balls.

You will need a lot of filler, about a kilogram of cotton wool or 5 liters of balls. They fill the case very tightly, pressing it with your hands and giving it the desired shape.

But in this case, you will still get a relatively soft pouf. If you want a harder pouf, you can make it from plastic bottles, for example.

And creative people also make a pouf out of a tire with their own hands! Old car tires are increasingly being used not only in the country for beautiful flower beds.

To create a pouf from a tire, a circle of plywood is cut out along its diameter and attached to the tire using self-tapping screws. Often the top and edges are decorated by wrapping it with twine, and for home interiors, if anyone dares to make one, you can knit a pouf cover from woolen threads or sew it from denim.

Calculation of the amount of yarn

Alize Puffy yarn is available in skeins weighing 100 g, 5 pieces per package. The length of the thread is within 9.2 m, in one skein there are about 350 rings. Calculation for small products can be made by determining how many of them there will be in a connected item. For example: if X is the number of loops of the braid, then the number of loops N in one shoe can be calculated using the formula:

N = X + X * 6 + (X * 2 – 3) * 4 + 2

That is, for size 10 knitted shoes you need 160 rings, for size 12 - 190. This means that from 1 skein of Alize you will get at least a pair of booties for a child under 2 years old. To decorate the booties, bows are tied, for which you will need another 8 rings per pair.

If you knit a blanket from Puffy, the consumption will be 5 skeins for a product 120 x 120 cm in simple knitting. When using interlacing loops, the area is reduced to 85 x 85 cm. It is convenient to measure the width of the blanket by laying out the loops on a flat surface.
