The zigzag pattern when crocheted is obtained in several variations, but in any design such a pattern is invariably interesting. It is especially convenient to use this pattern to use a hook to knit items that widen downward, but if the number of loops remains the same, the fabric will be even and there is no need to change the size of the hook.

Crocheted zigzag pattern: what products is it used for?
Variants of zigzag patterns crocheted are considered universal, but are most often used when knitting such products:
- skirts;
- blouses;
- cardigans;
- dresses;
- napkins;
- shawls, scarves;
- and even blankets.
A zigzag pattern is crocheted with different angles: the zigzag becomes sharper when the stitches are added gradually. The zigzag pattern can resemble a wave if the columns are added at a rapid pace and the depth of the peaks is shallow. The edge of the product always comes out wavy and no longer requires tying.
What yarn is used to crochet a zigzag pattern?
A product crocheted with a zigzag pattern looks impressive in any case. The type of thread depends on the functional purpose of the knitted item. Any yarn for the zigzag crochet pattern is suitable:
- cotton, linen;
- wool or wool blend;
- acrylic, polyamide or other synthetic thread;
- silk, viscose;
- from mixed fibers, etc.
It is not recommended to use yarn with fluff or long pile: in this case, the pattern becomes blurred and loses the geometric clarity of the lines. Particularly interesting is the zigzag crocheted pattern made from yarn of different colors. The brighter and more contrasting the colors, the more clearly the zigzag can be seen. The knitted fabric of the product looks as if zigzags of one color are immersed in the valleys and peaks of another color. You can add a row of textured yarn, but no more.
With a skillful selection of colors, the item turns out to be bright, catchy, and positive, while a single-color item looks more solid and rich.
The zigzag pattern is especially often crocheted when knitting summer children's and youth clothing in multi-color variations. Women's knitted clothing looks good with a striped zigzag pattern on skirts, blouses, tunics, if the top or bottom, worn in pairs, is made in a single color. In any case, items crocheted with a zigzag pattern are unique and unique.
Knitting patterns for zigzag crochet patterns
Zizag patterns are formed by alternating increases and decreases in stitches at regular intervals in the same row.
For example, every 10 loops in a row, 3-5 stitches are knitted with a common top, and then after 10 loops exactly the same number of increases are made. This is how zigzags or waves are formed. This pattern is also often called “Missoni” after the fashion designer who came up with the wave pattern on the fabric. Later, similar patterns began to be knitted and crocheted.

Best tool
Typically, needlewomen use one of two tools for knitting.
Of course, there is needle knitting. However, this technique has not become widespread due to the great complexity of execution.
Hook
Crochet hooks come in different sizes and shapes.
Crocheting with this wonderful tool is very easy, so it is perfect for beginners. They create a variety of patterns. It is small, compact and does not take up much space.
The main disadvantage is the ribbing and rigidity of the products. The row of loops is not tight, creating a simple thing takes a lot of time.
Spokes
Knitting needles of different thicknesses and lengths.
Suitable for more experienced knitters. Knitting with them is difficult, but when compared with crocheting, the process of creating airy patterns becomes noticeably more complicated. They allow you to knit large projects in a short time (an experienced knitter can make up to four loops per second). Things turn out soft, smooth (all loops, regardless of tension, will be equal to each other), pleasant to the skin.
There are several types of knitting needles.
Open or stocking knitting needles
Sold in sets of five. Relatively short, pointed on both sides. The main purpose is knitting in the round. Suitable for making mittens and socks.
Straight closed knitting needles
Sold as a pair. The longest of all knitting needles. They are convenient for knitting long, straight items, such as a scarf or sweater. Often used to create a blanket.
Circular or ring knitting needles
They are two short sticks connected with a thin fishing line. They are universal and can replace any knitting tool. Disadvantages include:
When you decide to knit a blanket with knitting needles, use closed knitting needles. They will prevent the loops from slipping from the reverse side and allow you to create a variety of motifs. In addition, they make it easier to change yarn colors.

Thick plaid
It is from merino itself that in most cases a thick blanket is knitted, which has gained popularity and become everyone’s favorite. It will be one of the best acquisitions for your home.
It can be knitted either using combed tape or conjugated fibers.
Combed tape is especially popular when choosing, but things made with your own labor from unprocessed materials also have their disadvantages:
- When working with tape, there is a fairly high probability that it will break due to the low strength of the raw material;
- The finished product may be prone to various types of deformation;
- These items cannot be washed.
Therefore, merino thread is much better. This material will not break off over time, will not stretch, will not split into fibers and will not lose its shape.
A merino blanket will be smooth to the touch, very soft and quite warm.
Unfortunately, ordinary hooks cannot be used, but improvised means can come to the rescue: tightly rolled papers in rolls, tied with tape, or plastic tubes that have a cone-shaped top. Their circumference can reach more than 20 cm.
It is important to know that the thicker the thread, the larger the diameter. Also, large knitting needles will definitely be needed to use. The fabric comes out frequently, due to the crochet work. This is useful for different types of bedding and carpets. And they make blankets much softer.
General recommendations
To knit a blanket, it is often recommended to buy acrylic threads or combine it with cotton or wool.
Then the blanket will come out tender, warm, soft to the touch and will not prick, as usually happens with pure wool.
- It is difficult to determine the size of threads, so the approximate size is 300 m in 100 grams. It can be even thicker.
- It’s also difficult to accurately determine their consumption, but if you look at it roughly, it takes 700–1000 grams for a meter-long blanket, and up to two kilograms for a large one.
- You should choose a hook depending on the thickness of the purchased thread.
- Blankets are divided into those that need to be knitted from separately knitted pieces and those that are initially knitted as a whole fabric.
- In order for the edges to be smooth and the appearance to be more neat, then the knitted blanket should be tied around the entire perimeter with two or three rows of sc.
You can tie the following types of borders:
- Simple with toes;
- With knitted pompoms;
- Mesh.

From squares
Blankets made from multi-colored squares, knitted from the corner.
Perhaps the most popular type of blanket. The main advantage is that it consists of small squares sewn together with thread. That is, you can knit while sitting in a traffic jam and visiting. Compared to traditional methods, knitting small sections does not require much time, space and effort.
Volumetric leaves
Before starting work, you need to study the “pearl” pattern. It is, along with an elastic band and a pigtail, an extremely popular element used in many works.
Knitting pearl pattern
Knit a series of alternating knit and purl stitches, and do the next one in the same way, but in a checkerboard pattern. The result will be a “pearl” pattern. It is worth noting that some craftswomen call it “seeds”, “fish scales” or “cobwebs”.
After learning a new element, start knitting a blanket.
Cast on 112 stitches. Then knit 4 rows using the “pearl” pattern, then proceed to the leaf motif, leaving 4 knots on each side.
Knitting pattern for the “Leaves” pattern
When knitting the “leaves”, you will need to divide the remaining fabric into 7 equal sections of 16 loops (for convenience, use pins).
1st row: 2 together. persons To the left, knit 8, 1 yarn over, knit 4, knit 2. persons right;
2nd row: 2 together. persons To the left, knit 3, 1 yarn over, knit 3, 8 stitches cross to the right;
3rd row: 2 together. persons Left, knit 6, knit 1, knit 4, knit 1, knit 2, knit 2. persons right;
4th row: 2 together. persons To the left, knit 1, knit 1, knit 6, knit 1, knit 5, knit 2. persons to the right.
Continue this way until you reach the desired length. Finish the blanket with four rows of “gossamer” and cut the thread instead.
