Soft, airy, almost weightless – this hand-made, large-knit blanket has captivated fans of knitted art! Stylish, cozy blankets invite you to wrap yourself in a warm cloudy embrace on a gloomy morning or warm up on a cool evening...

The idea for the original knitting technique came from the Americans: the Modern Wool company started with blankets, bedspreads and pillows, but gradually switched to scarves, hats and snoods. A unique method of processing wool allows you to create a feeling of slight negligence and frayed threads. Do you think it’s impossible to create Gulliver’s loops from natural wool?! Oh, how wrong you are! Merino sheep wool lends itself well to processing, so the loops are even and smooth. Acrylic thread is in no way inferior in quality to natural wool, and the cost varies significantly.

Chunky knit blankets in basic shades

Magnificent knitted blankets made of merino wool or soft acrylic will complement the interior in Scandinavian, Provence and country styles. Giant loops create the most delicate fabric, which can be classic and strict, playful and openwork, sophisticated and stylish - it all depends on the imagination of the craftswoman.

Hand made is becoming more and more popular every day; it is a mistake to think that knitting is the lot of old ladies. Not at all! Simple large knitting of local colors is a trend for 2016-2017. Cool blue, rich red, rich green, pure purple, authentic white and black - win-win options! In addition, natural shades of mint, cold chocolate, and coffee with milk are in fashion. Muted coral, dusty blue and dirty pink will fit perfectly into any interior.

A do-it-yourself coarse knitted blanket or blanket will enliven a sofa in the living room and a bed in the bedroom, become a cozy cocoon for those who like to be alone, and turn into a children's rug for playing on the floor. Wear-resistant materials allow you to use a knitted blanket in any conditions. Believe me, even the most lively baby, once in the arms of gentle “lamps,” will not want to be capricious.

Is it possible to connect this miracle of designer imagination? It’s not difficult to create a large knit blanket with your own hands, however, the knitting needles are different from ordinary ones - Gulliver’s sizes impress even experienced knitters! But nothing is impossible for talent! Merino wool knitted creations are nothing like “grandmother’s” knitting.

Methods for decorating a finished blanket

Knitting a blanket is part of the deal. The finished product must be properly designed. This is not only a connection of individual motifs, but also a neat masking of the ends of the threads.

  • The resulting product can be beautifully tied around the edge. For this purpose, both simple posts to seal the edges of the product and an openwork border are used.
  • You can add fringe or tassels along the edges of the blanket. The product can be embroidered or any other decorative design.
  • When designing, they are guided by their own wishes and features of the interior in which the product will be used.

A knitted blanket will be an excellent interior decoration and will help keep you warm during the cold season.

You can create a product with your own hands in different ways. Everyone chooses for themselves the design of the item, the working tool and the technique of execution.

Chunky knit blanket for beginners

The “Rib” and “Garter Stitch” methods are familiar to everyone. Even a novice needlewoman can easily create an airy fabric. True, you will have to get used to thick yarn and huge knitting needles... But the woolen miracle is worth the effort! The scheme is simple.

  • We cast on the required number of loops.
  • We remove the first one, do not knit it.
  • Knit a row to the end.
  • We turn the finished row over and get purl rows.
  • We remove the first one, do not knit it.
  • Knit until the end of the row.

The point is that each row is knitted with knit stitches, which even inexperienced girls can do. By the way, if you prefer the pattern created by purl stitches, go for it! Knitting is similar to modeling from plasticine: once you master the basic techniques, you can create any pattern.

Various crochet blankets

Crocheting a blanket is more popular than knitting. It is more convenient to do this, taking into account the specifics of the tool. Using a crochet hook you can create blankets in a variety of variations. Choosing your model will not be difficult.

Simple crochet blanket

Simple double crochet with or without double crochet looks boring. They prefer to do such things only at the very beginning of their acquaintance with knitting.

If you don’t want to use other patterns, you can play with color.

  • Even simple stripes will significantly enliven the product. In this way, you can use leftover threads by combining them into a blanket.
  • The product can be made sewn from simple squares. The elements are knitted separately and subsequently connected.
  • Each square can be knitted from threads of different shades and contain its own design or pattern.

Plush yarn blanket

This blanket made of plush yarn looks impressive and is pleasant to the touch. For work, you can take threads of different thicknesses and formats. There is no need to use a pattern when knitting.

  • The plush blanket looks great knitted with regular posts.
  • If you take yarn with ready-made loops, then you don’t need a hook. All the work can be done with your hands.

The result looks airy and children really like it. It is for children that such blankets are most often knitted. A large format product can be an expensive pleasure.

Using a Zigzag Pattern

An excellent product will be obtained by knitting a blanket with a zigzag pattern. This is a simple drawing that will provide a special elegance and color to the finished work.

  • There are different patterns for crocheting zigzags.
  • In this format, the blanket can be made monochrome or multi-colored.
  • Everyone will be able to implement their own paint distribution scheme.

The option is good for using leftover yarn of different colors. Light summer cotton blankets are often knitted with a zigzag pattern.

Only threads with a bright texture are not suitable for work. The pattern will be lost on them.

We knit a blanket from motifs

It is popular to make a blanket from individual motifs. This option is especially suitable for beginners.

  • To create a product, you will need to prepare a certain number of identical elements, which are subsequently connected.
  • The details can be knitted with simple stitches or using a pattern.
  • Granny's square is often used as a basis. The color of the threads can be changed within one element.
  • With the right combination of colors, you can get a product with a 3D effect.

Knitting on ring needles

Knitting needles on a fishing line make the task much easier, since the fishing line allows you to cast on the largest possible number of loops without fear that they will slip off at the most inopportune moment. We knit a large knit blanket according to the standard pattern.

  • We cast on the required number of loops.
  • We remove the first one, do not knit it.
  • Knit a row to the end.
  • We turn the finished row over and get purl rows.
  • We remove the first one, do not knit it.
  • Knit until the end of the row.

Varieties

It just seems that such an accessory as a blanket does not have a wide variety of models. A blanket is appropriate in the bedroom as a traditional bedspread; in the living room, such an element will become a spectacular accent, and in a children’s room it will harmoniously combine functional and decorative components.

Even in an office, a room with a fairly austere interior, a correctly chosen blanket can easily “fit in.”

The classification of blankets is very multifaceted. Let's highlight just a few criteria:

  • Factory products and hand-made.
  • Plain or multi-colored. Multicolor, in turn, can be divided into contrasting combinations or patterns in the same color scheme.
  • Uniform and with a relief pattern.

Knitting by hand

Let's take the work into our own hands! Literally: hand knitting without knitting needles... How? Easily! If you say that you don’t know how to knit, we won’t believe you! Two knitting needles can replace two hands. Knitting will turn into a game: it will be fun to pick up stitches on your hands! And if you involve your daughter in unusual knitting, the blanket will turn out twice as warm... The knitting pattern is no different from the usual one.

What is the advantage of knitted blankets?

There are more advantages than disadvantages. Look here:

  • Natural
  • Hypoallergenic does not harm the skin
  • You can do it yourself
  • Different in shape, thickness, relief
  • There are no limits to fantasy
  • Can be double sided
  • Made to fit the size of a bed or other furniture
  • They have a rich and wide selection of yarns, colors

Blankets are masterpieces of design art if they are made by hand. Imagine how beautifully a blanket can be decorated with various accessories: embroidery, buttons, lace, fringe, etc.

The disadvantages include the long knitting time, they require a lot of yarn, accumulate dust and require proper washing/drying.

Canvas of squares

One of the simplest, but at the same time complex options. The point is not in the knitting pattern, but in the assembly of the elements: each square is knitted separately in any way (knit or purl stitches), and then carefully sewn together with threads in the color of the fabric. Show your imagination: sew knitted squares with large stitches using threads in contrasting shades. The advantage of this method is that you can combine colors and knitting methods. The result is a plaid that resembles a patchwork style.

How to knit a baby blanket with knitting needles

First of all, when knitting a baby blanket, you need to choose the right material. The yarn should be hypoallergenic. Therefore, if there is no accurate data about a baby’s allergy to wool, it is better to refrain from wool yarn.

The best materials are cotton, acrylic, fleece, cashmere.

What about the pattern? The flight of fancy here can be limitless, but there are recommendations that should be followed:

  • Do not overload the blanket with a large number of patterns and details. It is advisable to make the design discreet;
  • A large, voluminous blanket may be comfortable for an adult, but not for a child;
  • For conscious children, you can knit a blanket with the image of his favorite movie/cartoon character. The child will definitely thank you for such a product;
  • The pattern should look beautiful on both sides and not have a large number of large holes.

Since there are a lot of ways to knit blankets, we will analyze the method that is suitable for beginners. It is better to take 90 cm circular knitting needles.

How is knitting done:

  1. Knit eight, purl seven, knit seven. Repeat eight times and add one knit stitch.
  2. We repeat the first step, only the last loop should be a purl.
  3. Knit four, throw, two right, two knit. Repeat eight times and + one knit.
  4. We carry out the actions of the second point.
  5. Knit two, right two, throw, knit one, throw, right two, knit one. Eight reps + one knit.
  6. Repeat step two again.
  7. Knit three, right two, throw, knit three. Eight reps and one knit.
  8. Repeat the second step.

The entire pattern must be repeated eighteen times. The last row should repeat the first.

  • For those who like more aesthetic and elegant patterns, the openwork style is suitable. This pattern gives the canvas lightness and airiness, and the patterns are more sophisticated.
  • Here it is better to give preference to acrylic thread. Knitting needles are the same as in the first version.
  • First of all, we collect 156 buttonholes. Next, you need to knit seven rows using the tangle technique, alternating the purl stitches with the knit stitches in order.
  • The eighth row must be done in this way: the first and last six loops are knitted with a “tangle”, and the others with a purl loop. From the new row there should be one front and thirteen repeating patterns between the “sixes”.
  • The main fragment of the blanket must be knitted with the edging of the rows. There are six tangle loops on each side. The rapport is repeated twenty times, and at the end seven rows are made with alternating loops in a checkerboard pattern.

But the main thing in this matter is not how you knit, but what feelings you put into it. To make the blanket cozy, you need to knit it only at your own request and only with love.

How is this related?

If you have the opportunity to make your own knitting needles from wooden dowels with a large diameter, then you will knit a blanket in the same way as any other product. But, of course, most women who decide to start creating autumn home decor do not have such knitting needles at hand, nor, indeed, the opportunity to make them.

Therefore, you need to use your own hands to knit. At first glance, the idea seems quite absurd, but it is not. Hand knitting is an incredibly simple and easy process that allows you to achieve a weave of large loops that looks chic.

That is, the blanket presented in this project is knitted without the use of knitting needles or a machine; all the work is done by hand.

Selecting the size and color of the bedspread

Capes are intended for some specific furniture. This could be a wide double bed, a narrow children's sofa, a sofa in the living room or wide armchairs. It is necessary to take measurements from the furniture and take into account that the bedspread should hang slightly, covering the bed linen and structural parts of the beds and armchairs.

The choice of bedspread color must be made taking into account the overall color scheme of the interior, as well as a few more nuances:

  • for a large room, dark, intense colors are better suited, which serve as bright spots that attract attention;
  • a small room, on the contrary, should not be divided into different color spots and the color of the bedspread should be kept in the tone of the carpets or wallpaper;
  • rooms facing the sunny side are best decorated in cool green and blue colors;
  • To create a cozy and warm feeling in your home, you need to use appropriate soft shades and fluffy yarns.

Necessary materials

To knit a blanket for a sofa, you need to prepare the materials that will be used in the work, the main one of which is yarn. You can knit a product with knitting needles from:

  • wool;
  • cotton yarn;
  • linen;
  • silks;
  • synthetic fiber.

Yarn for blankets can be absolutely any, but without adding metallized thread

The choice of material directly depends on the functionality of the product, and its volume depends on the chosen knitting method and pattern.

If decoration is planned in the future, finishing material will be needed.

Attention! Do not use old yarn to make a large blanket: the frayed surface of the yarn will give the product a sloppy appearance.

Large knitted items

It was common for our ancestors to knit large, bulky items for home use. They spun threads themselves and made blankets, rugs, blankets and large shawls from them. Previously, this was an economic necessity, but every needlewoman tried to decorate her home, to make things not only warm, but also special in the knitting pattern and combination of different colors.

A bedspread is a relatively large hand knitted item. The bedspread can be used as a blanket, blanket, cover for a sofa or chair.

Using tools, knitting needles and hooks, they knitted warm clothes and blankets from animal wool for the whole family.

Machines for machine-producing knitwear have been around for a long time, but hand knitting is still a fashionable and valuable way to make clothing and household items. A thing made by hand absorbs the warmth of a person through it, carries harmony and a positive charge of creativity.

A handmade gift to a loved one will be very pleasant, as it speaks of special attention and care.

Yarn and tools for work

Knitting threads can be purchased both in specialized departments of industrial stores and through numerous online stores and sites that send orders by mail. When everything has already been decided with the color and quality of the threads, you need to calculate their quantity, with a small margin.

In each specific case, the number of meters of yarn will depend on its thickness, but for weight this calculation will be approximately as follows: for a blanket measuring 80X120 cm you will need 2 kg, and for a bedspread 150X200 cm - 6 kg of yarn.

You can knit in three ways:

  • crochet, it is more convenient and faster for beginners, also more suitable for openwork patterns;
  • knitting needles, the diameter of which depends on the thickness of the threads;
  • by hand, this requires a giant yarn and minimal skills to quickly get the result of the work.
