Sink mount - tips for choosing and a detailed description of how to install a sink (100 photos and videos)

Kitchen sinks differ in material, size, shape, design and installation method. Overlay models are considered outdated against the background of a variety of fashionable mortise products. However, they have a number of advantages for self-installation and are still used in summer cottages and temporary apartments.

In this article, we will look at how to install an overhead sink with your own hands, what needs to be prepared for this, and what installation methods are best to use. To make it easier for you to understand the main stages of installation, we have selected visual photos and useful video recommendations for installation.

Mounting versions

One of the most common options is a wall-mounted sink. The name itself speaks about the method of fastening the structure. This type of sink is installed and attached to the wall. The location of the pipes and drain siphon assumes that communications are connected from below.

The pipes used are mainly plastic. Sinks installed against the wall are in great demand, not only due to their technical data, but also due to their reasonable price.

It is not recommended to install such products on partitions; it is fraught with the risk of falling and breaking both the object itself and the destruction of the wall.

Choose a solid base; use a solid brick or concrete wall area for this purpose. Another option is specially designed frame devices.

Review of manufacturers

Ready-made floor-mounted sink cabinets are available from many manufacturers. There is a choice from global and domestic brands, economy class options and luxury furniture. It is worth taking a closer look at some of the manufacturers.

Installation methods

The product, equipped in the countertop, is a fairly reliable design. Stability depends on additional fixation of the base itself. This strengthening is done using brackets.

The most practical and popular use of consoles. This type of fastening of the sink to the wall is practically invisible. Also, brackets can become decoration and add a touch of originality.

The modern market for these products provides many models of sinks. By choosing a product with pre-made holes, the process of installing the bowl will be much easier. Since the finished slots play the role of brackets.

You can also attach the sink with fasteners you made yourself. However, such a design requires skill, correct calculation, based on the weight of the bowl and the strength of the wall panel.

How to choose a sink for a countertop?

In any plumbing store, the buyer will see a large number of different sinks, but not all of them are suitable for insertion. There are several options:

  • Invoices. They are installed on the cabinet from above and completely cover it. Extremely easy to install. The main disadvantage is the presence of gaps between the furniture and the sink.
  • Mortise. They are inserted into the hole provided in the base. Installation is a little more complicated, but the cuts are reliably protected from moisture.
  • Integrated. Practical combination of sink and work surface. The side can be at different levels: level with the table, below it, etc.
  • Under-table. They can only be integrated into countertops with special properties: hardwood or stone. The edge of the bowl drops below the level of the base.

In practice, mortise devices are most often installed. They are durable and attractive, easy to use. The most popular equipment is made of stainless steel and artificial cast stone.

What you should pay attention to

A properly and correctly fixed bracket does not wobble or move under the influence of force. Only after making sure that it is stable and reliable, proceed to installing the sink.

Do not forget to secure it with an elastic mixture designed to seal the joints, or secure it with special clips.

Let's consider their types

Individual supports that are developed for mounting a bowl of a certain model. These are design works and often have an unusual configuration. Such plumbing fixtures are supplied with brackets in the form of specially shaped pins. Such fastenings are additionally treated with special compounds that carry a decorative load.

Wall-mounted sinks are fixed with cast iron and steel brackets coated with an anti-corrosion compound.

Racks are also available in various configurations (T or G), and are also made in the form of frames with a movable unit that allows you to adjust the installation. They are characterized by increased safety and stability.

The volume of the bowl affects the size of the mount. The length of the anchor is of great importance, since the depth of its insertion into the wall is at least thirty millimeters. The recommended mounting bracket size ranges from fifty to one hundred and twenty millimeters.

If there is no support

Usually a mounting kit is also sold with the sink. True, there are exceptions, and then you have to purchase it yourself. Experts advise choosing well-known and proven products so that the installation result will satisfy you.

First of all, you should determine the location for installing the product. Then carefully take the proper measurements (the standard height reaches 85 cm from the floor). A horizontal line is drawn at the selected height, and the fastening points are fixed using a bowl (along its upper edge).

The marks made allow you to drill holes to insert dowels with screwed-in studs. They should be a couple of centimeters longer than the width of the sink. The process ends with careful tightening of the nuts. We check the design for strength.

Methods for attaching a sink to a cabinet

Attaching the overhead sink to the cabinet is carried out:

  • Sealant - the procedure is allowed for a light round sink with low weight; it does not require the use of secondary devices.
  • Self-tapping screws - used for heavy equipment, when the use of a seal can provoke a collapse of the structure.
  • Using special metal corners included in the kit. The plates are fixed on the outside of the bedside table with self-tapping screws.

Mounting with brackets

We remember the main rule - the strength of the surface on which the washbasin is supposed to be installed. If the surface is loose, you need to increase the drilling depth slightly, use larger-than-standard fasteners and anchors of a length appropriate for the specific case.

The process itself is not complicated:

  • a line is marked at the selected height;
  • the thickness of the bowl wall is measured;
  • this measurement is laid down and a mark is made;
  • direct fastening is carried out;
  • markings are made through the recesses;
  • holes are drilled, dowels are driven in;
  • We install brackets;
  • we bring communications;
  • We carry out a final check and finally secure the washers;
  • We will carefully inspect the system by opening the water and checking for leaks;
  • Let's make sure the installation is secure.

Construction - frame

If you find that the bathroom walls are quite weak for installing a vanity, try an interesting way to mount the sink.

A device resembling a frame and consisting of profiles attached to the floor and walls will help to cope with this complexity. It can be adjusted in height, so the sink will be located the way you want. In addition, all unsightly pipes will be hidden inside this structure.

Installing it is quite simple. The frame is positioned, secured, and the pins are screwed in at the designated level to secure the product itself. The frame is sewn up with finishing material consisting of layers of plaster and paper. Then they are lined with any decorative material of your choice.

In order to reduce noise when operating the washbasin, a rubber washer is placed on the rod located between the wall and the bowl. Then, using pins, the wall-hung sink is installed.

The installation, properly assembled, is able to withstand a fairly large load, and, as an option, it can include space with additional shelves. Beautiful, convenient, economical.

How to avoid mistakes during installation

To drill into a wall to mount a sink, you need to choose the right tool based on the finish of the bathroom. For tiles, a feather drill bit is suitable (it will leave fewer chips). To drill through concrete, you need to set the drill to impact mode and select a carbide attachment.

The presence of a hammer drill is preferable, since when drilling a wall made of concrete or brick, the applied forces are several times less.

To avoid damage to communications and leaks, it is necessary to choose flexible hoses with union nuts for connection to water pipes.

Before installing the sink, secure the drain siphon from below using rubber seals and a corrugated hose.

If, after checking the tap, it turns out that the connections are not tight enough, they need to be disassembled. Then put a braid of combed flax over the thread or use FUM tape (5-6 turns). After this, it is necessary to reassemble the structure and check the tightness.

By observing all the above requirements and the sequence of actions, you can be sure that the sink and cabinet are correctly connected correctly.

Important! Before installation, check the quality of the gaskets and, if defects are found, immediately replace them with better ones.

What is needed for high-quality installation of the product

It is not possible to install and secure a washbasin without certain tools and materials. By contacting a hardware store, you can purchase a high-quality set of tools for attaching a sink. This is a special set that includes all the necessary assortment: dowels, bushings, studs, nuts and washers.

This package is applicable when working with traditional bases. They are also suitable for walls made of natural stone.

Installation of the sink flush or below the level of the countertop. Unusually shaped sinks

An undermount sink can be mounted flush with the countertop - however, this is a labor-intensive process that requires experience, since it involves removing the layer of countertop under the edge. The depth of removal is equal to the height of the side with a layer of sealant.

If you decide to install and connect the sink so that it is below the table level, you will have to resort to the services of specialists. After all, this installation method is chosen for expensive structures - not made of steel, but of natural, artificial stone. In this case, special tools are required for fastening - for example, a jigsaw and diamond-coated saws. Indeed, in such sinks there may not be a hole for draining water - complete sawing of products is not carried out in industrial conditions. Sinks made from natural materials are secured with a special mounting adhesive.

As for sinks with unusual shapes, they come with a paper template from which the installation hole can be cut.

Sink in the kitchen

This plumbing attribute is simply necessary in your kitchen. You can install it in various ways. It all depends on the type of product, the material used, the design, style of the kitchen furniture and the overall interior of the room.

Based on specific parameters, various methods of attaching a sink in the kitchen are determined. Let's look at some of them.

Manufacturing and assembly process

Let's focus on the most common cabinet design - a direct one for an overhead sink. Before making a cabinet for a kitchen sink, make an accurate drawing with calculations of the dimensions of each part. The sketch will depend on the dimensions of the selected sink.

Drawing

Necessary parameters for the sketch:

  • width of the structure (from 400 to 800 mm);
  • the dimensions of the sidewalls remain standard: bottom depth – 530 mm, height – 814 mm;
  • the total width of the doors is equal to the width of the cabinet;
  • the height of the doors is calculated based on the height of the structure and the width of the façade planks;
  • the length of the facade strip is equal to the width of the sink, and the width is 150 mm;
  • the length of the spacers and the lower plinth is equal to the width of the bottom, and the width of these elements is 80 mm.

A parameter such as the width of the bottom depends on the width of the entire structure with a double deduction of the thickness of the material. For example, if the thickness of the chipboard is 14 mm, and the total width of the structure is 800 mm, then the width of the bottom is 800 - (14x2) = 772 mm.

Important! Calculate the doors very accurately, otherwise they simply will not close or there will be an unsightly gap between them. To correctly calculate the doors, subtract the width of the lower plinth and the facade strip, which is attached above the doors, from the total height of the structure. That is, 814 - (80+150) = 584 is the height of the doors

That is, 814 - (80+150) = 584 is the height of the doors

To correctly calculate the doors, subtract the width of the lower plinth and the facade strip, which is attached above the doors, from the total height of the structure. That is, 814 - (80+150) = 584 is the height of the doors.

To calculate the width of the doors, divide the width of the cabinet by 2 and subtract the thickness of the end edges on both sides (this is approximately 2 mm). Also subtract the gaps between the doors and adjacent modules (2x2 mm per door).

In addition, deduct an additional 2mm for installation. The calculation for given dimensions looks like this: 800/2 - (2x2) - (2x2) - 2 = 390 mm - this is the width of one door.

Cut lumber and mill doors for fittings according to the dimensions strictly specified in the drawing.

Assembly

In order for the cabinet to serve for a long time, it is recommended to treat the joints of the parts with silicone to prevent moisture from entering. Make all connections using furniture screws.

Structural assembly diagram:

  • connect the sides of the cabinet to each other with upper spacers (one is attached flush with the upper ends of the sidewalls, the second is 25 cm lower, on the opposite side);
  • secure the lower plinth on the front side;
  • mount the bottom of the sink (it should lie clearly on the baseboard and be perpendicular);
  • secure the façade strip above the doors;
  • fasten the hinges into the prepared holes on the doors;
  • Screw the mating parts of the door hinges to the sides.

When installing doors on a cabinet, make sure that they are secured at the same height. Decorate the cabinet with paint or self-adhesive film.

The bulk of the work is done, all that remains is to install the sink.

Overlay design

One of the most common sinks is the countertop sink. Even a non-specialist can install it. The product is mounted on a special surface that does not have a back wall or a cover.

In this case, preference is given to L-shaped fasteners with an oblique slot on one part. To install such a sink, four similar fasteners are used.

How to install a sink

This stage of the work is relatively easy. The metal sink is inserted into the body from above, but it must be secured, otherwise the required rigidity will not be achieved. If this is not done, the cabinet will sooner or later fall apart (see video).

There are two methods for attaching a metal sink to the body.

The same silicone is used, and two problems are immediately solved - sealing the upper part of the body at the junction with the sink, giving rigidity to the entire structure. To do this, silicone is applied along the entire perimeter to the upper end of the case. Then a sink is put on top. The housing assembled in this way can be immediately installed, connected to the drain and used. Self-tapping screws are used to attach the sink - this option is more reliable

Please note: in either of both methods, silicone is applied to the upper end of the cabinet - primarily for sealing, and not just to secure it. Below are the dimensions of the sink for which the body was built

It will install into the structure without any problems. There are options for the location of the sink both on the right and on the left, when viewed from the facade

Below are the dimensions of the sink for which the body was built. It will install into the structure without any problems. There are options for the location of the sink both on the right and on the left, when viewed from the facade.

As a result, the finished piece of furniture will look something like this:

Built-in sink

The product is installed when the kitchen set consists of a solid top surface. There may be some difficulties with this option.

It is necessary to decide on the location of the sink and its shape and make a cutout for the sink. After applying sealant to the cut edges of the countertop and the bottom of the sink, the structure is compressed with clamps to strengthen the bowl. Then the communications are connected.

Types of kitchen sinks

Installing a kitchen sink with your own hands can be done using various technologies. The installation method is selected depending on the type of sink structure:

  1. Invoices are considered the most budget-friendly and easiest to install with your own hands. The sink is placed on a separate cabinet. The disadvantage of this option is that there are gaps between the sink and the cabinet.
  1. Mortise ones are installed directly into the tabletop, for which you need to cut out the corresponding hole.

  1. Undercounter sinks belong to the more expensive segment; they are mounted below the countertop, thanks to which they provide excellent sealing and appearance.

Advice from installation experts

Do not neglect the recommendations that will help in the process:

  • Use caulk instead of rubber seals. It is waterproof, has the property of strong adhesion to various surfaces and is durable.
  • When installing the sink, use a partner to help you.
  • If the base is wooden, use the manual method of screwing in self-tapping screws. This will prevent the fastening from being too tight.

Take care of the correct choice of fastening for a specific type of sink, use all your wishes and you will be convinced that any method of installing such a necessary plumbing product is within your power.

What material are sinks made from?

Quite often, choosing a kitchen sink becomes a difficult task. Errors in operation lead to the fact that products have to be constantly changed, so it is necessary to familiarize yourself in advance with some of the features of each material.

Table No. 3. Materials for making modern sinks

View, illustrationDescription
Stainless steelOften used in the production of sinks. Products come with a rough, matte and glossy texture. The main advantage of the material is its low price. In addition, even a beginner can handle installing such a sink without fear of damaging the surface. Metal products have an aesthetic appearance, thanks to which they fit perfectly into the interior of various kitchens. In addition, stainless steel does not suffer from exposure to various chemicals. The only disadvantages that can be highlighted are the possibility of scratches and dents.
CeramicsWashbasins of various types are often made from this material. At the same time, the main advantage of ceramic products is their attractive appearance. Such designs are especially suitable for kitchens of classic design. In addition, such a surface is not damaged when exposed to hot water or aggressive alkali, and there are very rarely scratches on it. Another clear advantage is the ability to install the sink yourself without the help of a specialist. One of the disadvantages is the fragility of ceramics - this means that the sink can break with a strong impact.
Fake diamondThis is the most modern material that is actively used for the manufacture of sinks. It is based on natural and synthetic components. The first option has a higher cost, it is resistant to various damages and chemicals. The main advantages include a variety of colors.
