Varnishing of wooden doors. Review of materials. Work technology

Finishing and renovation

In order for the interior of the room to always have an impeccable and presentable appearance, and for guests to admire the taste of the owners, it is necessary to always pay attention to even the smallest details. Wooden doors are becoming an important interior item. All of them must be aesthetic and harmoniously match the design. And if the old canvases have lost their attractiveness, worn out or deteriorated over time, you need to learn how to varnish a wooden door to restore or decorate the overall appearance.

Varnishing process

When should the canvas be varnished?

There are several reasons why you should think about varnishing a wooden door. It is important that such a structure is made of solid wood. It can be any type - mahogany, beech or oak, as well as cedar and pine doors. It is simply impractical to paint such products with colored paints, under which the texture and attractive texture of the wood will be hidden. Even ordinary pine, with proper processing and high-quality work, will look flawless in the doorway.

Advice! If the door leaf already had a varnish coating, but over the course of its service life it has faded, burnt out, received scratches and other damage, then it is better to re-varnish the door. In some cases, it is possible to change the shade of the door; for this purpose, varnishes with a tint are selected.

Tools and materials for work

Before you start painting the door yourself, you need to prepare the canvas. To do this, you may need the following materials and tools:

  • screwdrivers, screwdriver;
  • sander;
  • construction hair dryer;
  • sandpaper;
  • remover or solvent;
  • wood putty;
  • primer composition;
  • rubber spatula.

To paint the surface, you cannot do without a brush and roller. If the chosen dye has a fairly liquid consistency, you can use a paint sprayer - the work will go faster with it. As additional and equally important tools, you need to prepare a paint bath, gloves, an unnecessary rag, and masking tape.

Types of wood varnishes

It is necessary to carefully select the appropriate varnish, since each canvas, depending on the material, requires certain properties from the coating. When choosing, you should first focus on the type of wood from which the product is made. You should also take into account the operating conditions of a particular door, whether it is exposed to temperature changes and humidity; in this case, a highly resistant varnish is needed.

Types of funds

There are a lot of different varnish compositions offered on the market. All of them are divided into varieties, depending on the composition:

  1. Alkyd based. These varnishes contain solvents. They usually have a yellowish tint. Among the advantages are water resistance, strength, high drying speed - about a day. Alkyd varnishes are also offered at an affordable price. The disadvantages are unpleasant aromas during application, susceptibility to fading in the sun, and the presence of harmful substances in the composition.
  2. Nitrovarnishes. These products are based on nitrogen compounds and acetone. Varnishes are colorless and will not affect the overall appearance of the wood. Such compositions should not be used inside living rooms. Among the advantages, it is worth noting practicality, long service life, and accessibility. The downsides are factors such as flammability and the presence of toxic components.
  3. On a polyurethane basis. Consist of polymer substances. They do not emit unpleasant odors and do not contain toxins. Application requires the application of a special primer.
  4. Acrylic based. They are water soluble. They are distinguished by high environmental safety. Can be used in any living room, even in a nursery. UV resistant. When applied they will not spread or crack. The only drawback is that they require a long time to dry.

Another sign by which varnishes are selected is the quality and general appearance of the surface. Based on this property, glossy (shiny) and matte coatings are distinguished.

Is it possible to repaint laminate flooring in a different color?

To understand whether a color change is really necessary, you need to understand which layers the paint is affecting. Any board, regardless of cost and class, consists of four layers:

  • external - made of paper, and to enhance the protective properties and service life, impregnated with resin and corundum;
  • the decorative layer is made of paper onto which a design is applied - imitation of wood;
  • the main supporting layer is usually made of thick, durable artificial material or solid wood;
  • bottom substrate.

The topmost layer is reinforced with waterproof film. When laminate is recently purchased and laid on the floor, it is not afraid of moisture. Over time, this protection disappears; even a small amount of liquid leads to damage to the floor covering.

Therefore, there is no clear answer to the question of whether it is permissible to paint laminate flooring. Manufacturers indicate on flooring packaging that the material cannot be coated with paint or varnish. Repair and finishing specialists also do not recommend covering laminate flooring with paint, citing a change in its performance properties.

Coverage selection criteria

When choosing a varnish coating for door panels, you first need to understand for what conditions of use it is intended. If these are indoor doors, then varnish for interior work is used. And when you need to cover entrance structures, you need to choose a composition for external use that will be resistant to moisture, temperature changes and wear.

The choice between gloss and matte finish is made taking into account the requirements for interior design and overall style. For example, in a rustic and classic style it is better to use matte finishes. And modern modern or techno trends go better with glossy canvases.

Attention! Another important criterion is the initial quality of the wooden surface. It is important to remember that glossy varnish can only highlight existing defects and damage. A matte finish can disguise such unevenness.

If the use of nitro varnish is required, it is important to test it on an inconspicuous area to understand whether this composition is compatible with the door primer. Certain compounds cause cracks to appear in the coating, which loses its presentability.

Recommendations

To avoid damaging the door handles during varnishing, it is advisable to wrap them with masking tape. It is not recommended to use regular one, as it leaves traces of glue. But the paper one is perfect. But, if it is necessary to process all hidden places, it is advisable to disassemble the fittings.

It is also recommended to completely remove the old protective coating before applying a new coat of varnish. This will not only have a positive effect on the appearance, but will also extend the life of the protective surface. Don't forget about safety precautions. Experts recommend working with protective gloves. And if it is an interior door, it is important to ventilate the room well (even if it is acrylic varnish).

Do-it-yourself door varnish technology

You can varnish the door leaf yourself, without the help of professionals. To do this, you need to select the required composition, prepare tools and study coating technology.

Tools and materials

To work with wood surfaces, you should take care of the necessary tools and equipment in advance, namely:

  • matching varnish;
  • primer mixture;
  • brush, paint roller or spray bottle;
  • container for varnish;
  • rags;
  • wood putty;
  • solvents;
  • grinding machine;
  • construction hairdryer

Before coating with varnish, all unevenness and roughness are removed.
When choosing the amount of coating required, you need to take into account the consumption of the varnish composition specified by the manufacturer. This parameter is indicated on the packaging. It is imperative to take into account that the canvas will be coated on both sides; most likely, you will have to use two or three layers of varnish.

It is better to take the product with a reserve, taking into account the risks of sudden spillage of varnish. The remaining material can be used in the future to paint defective areas. To carry out the work, it is necessary to prepare a place - a stable surface on which the canvas can be laid.

Preparatory activities

The overall appearance of the lacquered door coating depends on how carefully the preparatory steps are completed. However, before applying varnish, you should prepare the door leaf. Before covering the door, be sure to remove fittings and other elements.

The door is sanded using fine sandpaper. This process should not be ignored; each section should be processed as carefully as possible, not forgetting the ends. If the sandpaper becomes clogged with wood dust, it needs to be changed. Using a grinder will help increase the speed of work.

Once the surface has been sanded, remove dust using a regular household vacuum cleaner. Then the canvas is inspected in good light. If small cracks, irregularities, or cracks are found, these areas should be covered with putty. Its shade must completely match the color of the door in order to successfully disguise everything. When the treated door has dried, these areas need to be sanded again.

Next, you need to apply a protective primer. This material prevents damage to doors by insects, fungus and mold. In this case, the primer is clogged into the pores of the wood, which reduces the consumption of varnish.

Important! The priming compositions used must have the same base as the varnish coating, otherwise there is a risk of delamination and cracking of the finished surface. The ideal solution is to purchase materials from the same line from the same manufacturer.

After priming, the door is sanded again with fine sandpaper. At this stage, preparation is completed and varnishing can begin.

Surface varnishing stages

It is recommended to varnish the door according to the following instructions:

  1. Prepare the varnish composition, add solvent if necessary. Stirring is done carefully and slowly so that no air gets into the product. Otherwise, air bubbles may appear on the door.
  2. A small amount of varnish is poured into the tray. Apply the product to the door using uniform movements of a roller or brush.
  3. It is important to work quickly, without delay. Otherwise, streaks between layers will be noticeable.
  4. The second layer is applied perpendicular to the first layer. If a third layer of coating is required, its direction will be the same as that of the first.
  5. Before applying subsequent layers, you need to wait until the previous coating dries. Drying time depends on the type of varnish. Usually this parameter is indicated in the instructions.
  6. The ends and paneled areas are processed in the same way as the main fabric. Only here you need to use a small brush. If there are already fittings in the opening, accidental drips of varnish on them can be removed.

Advice! While the previous layer is drying, all rollers and brushes must be kept in tight film packaging so that they do not stick together and dry out.

How to create an antique effect

There is a simple way to create a worn effect in antique-style interiors. In this case, a dark brown tone of varnish is used, after drying the door is rubbed with wax. And a varnish coating of a lighter shade is applied on top. Then you need to clean off the wax, sand the canvas and secure the created effect with stain. Next, you need to open the jar and stir the composition. This will eliminate the presence of air bubbles in the varnish. Then pour a small amount of paint into the prepared container. The door is first removed from the frame and installed horizontally.

The varnish is applied promptly to prevent transition between layers. It must be applied in an overlap. The number of layers is at least 3. Each of them must first dry. This takes about 12 hours.

Also note that varnishes from different manufacturers have different drying times. Therefore, pay attention to what is written on the packaging. What to do when sagging and drips form? They can be removed with sandpaper. But such manipulations can be done on the first two layers. You cannot use sandpaper at the finish, otherwise the appearance will deteriorate.

Please note: while the layer is drying, the brush must be in a closed bag or in a jar of varnish. Otherwise, the product will crystallize and it will be impossible to work.

Features of painting door panels

It often happens that old doorways have a good frame and panel, but have lost their original luster. An affordable, simple method of updating is coating with coloring materials. Any person can handle this kind of work. It is enough to know the properties of the paint and varnish materials from which the doors are made. Attention is paid to compliance with the technology of painting structures:

  • Paneled canvases. Before painting, they are disassembled into elements, since the number of joints leads to wear and requires updating.
  • Solid wood: heavy structures that convey the natural structure of wood. To update, use varnish or paint for such wood-look doors.
