Usually, installing glass shelves does not require great qualifications, but you need to know some rules and techniques. And if you decide to install it yourself, then below are some practical recommendations to help you. Having decided on the geometric dimensions of the shelf, it is worth choosing stylish limiters for it.
Benefits of using shelves in the bathroom
If you still do not decide to purchase shelves for the bathroom, considering such actions to be worthless, it is recommended to pay attention to the advantages of having these unique storage parts. The advantages of using shelves, including glass ones, include the following important aspects:
- Storage. Often in the bathroom there is a huge amount of household chemicals and related items that are so necessary for washing and comfort. If the room is small, installing special cabinets here is almost impossible. Special shelves for the bathroom will come to the rescue.
- Safety. Tubes of creams and bottles of shampoos located on shelves within walking distance from the bathtub represent a reliable and safe design, since there is no danger of slipping.
- Space saving. A corner shelf will save space, unlike large cabinets and racks.
- Aesthetics. The appearance of the shelves, which today are presented in a wide variety of stylistic solutions, will add laconicism and attractiveness to the entire bathroom design.
Having familiarized yourself with the advantages of shelves, the question involuntarily arises: can a glass shelf located in the bathroom really have so many positive aspects? To find out, you need to consider the features and types of products presented.
Attaching shelves to plasterboard walls
We have already mentioned several times that drywall is the worst material for making partitions in bathrooms. The extremely low physical strength also creates problems when attaching stainless steel shelves. New objects are constantly being placed on the shelves, they can lean on them, etc. Such cyclic loads quickly destroy the place of fixation, the shelves first wobble, and then completely come off. You should approach the choice of fastening hardware on plasterboard boards very carefully, do not trust manufacturers’ advertisements too much and always buy them with a sufficient margin of safety. What can be used to fix shelves on plasterboard interior partitions?
- Galvanized metal screw. Can be used to secure light, stationary objects.
- Plastic screw. It has an enlarged thread and can withstand medium-sized stainless steel shelves. For these screws, it is necessary to make technological holes in the plasterboard boards. The diameter of the hole must be equal to the diameter of the screw body, this is a prerequisite. If it is smaller, then the drywall will crumble during screwing. If large, then the area of engagement of the turns decreases. Both options significantly reduce the fixation strength. Inside the plastic screw there are holes for screwing in a metal one, which holds the shelf.
Various fasteners
Butterfly hardware is used for fastening objects on vertical plasterboard surfaces.
Butterfly dowel for drywall
Galvanized metal and plastic screws are used to attach shelves in bathrooms with plasterboard walls finished with waterproof wallpaper or ceramic tiles. How to fix the shelf if the finishing of the walls is made of plastic lining? The short and honest answer is that there is no reliable method of fixation. The fact is that the distance between the front part of the lining and the plasterboard slabs is at least two centimeters. The destructive forces at the fastening points increase tenfold due to the lever - the screw is not attracted to the surface, but is located at a great distance. Added to this problem is the almost zero strength of plastic plates. They bend under the load of the lower part of the shelves, and it should rest against the surface. Conclusion - you must always remember that cheap finishing materials create big problems during operation. Find out how to install an acrylic bathtub on a frame by following the link.
DIY LED lighting for glass shelves
DIY plasterboard wall shelves
If there are many shelves, then each of them can be illuminated in a different color.
As has already become clear from the information given above, in order to make shelves with lighting, you will need an aluminum profile for mounting.
Procedure for manufacturing LED backlight.
First you need to go to the store and buy the profile mentioned above. The main thing is that it matches the thickness of the glass from which you are making the shelf.
Next, it is cut to the required size. Do not forget that all burrs that appear during the trimming process must be carefully removed.
Now you need to perform a high-quality fixation of the profile on the wall. For these purposes, holes are made in the profile for fastening. The profile must be attached to the wall surface using self-tapping screws and special plastic plugs
It is important, when marking and attaching the shelf to the wall, not to forget about using a building level
The next stage involves installation work with the diode strip. Almost every profile has an insert made of plastic. Remember that you do not need to delete it. Such a device will protect the tape from possible contact with the aluminum surface. This will save you from possible short circuits. Get ready for the fact that the installation of LED lighting for a glass shelf, performed using an LED strip, will be labor-intensive, since tucking it inside the profile causes a lot of inconvenience, especially if there is no free access to its end ends. With open ends, inserting the tape is not very difficult, since the existing groove is intended specifically for this purpose. In another situation, various available devices can be used to place the tape inside the profile. One of the options for placing the tape inside the profile involves bending it like a “house”. Just remember that you will have to use a ruler for alignment later. The ruler can be made of wood or plastic.
At the last stage, a glass shelf with lighting already placed inside the profile requires the installation of glass. The process is not difficult, but it requires some effort on your part. Since, for reliability, the arrangement of glass in the profile is dense. If you can’t do it yourself, you can use a wooden handle and a rubber hammer.
Now you are convinced that making glass shelves with LED lighting is quite easy and quick. But if you come to the conclusion that this is a very difficult task for you, then the most correct thing would be to contact a workshop.
Stages of work on hanging a shelf
All work on placing a shelf on the wall consists of four stages:
- Preparation;
- Marking of fasteners;
- Drilling fasteners;
- Hitch.
Two of the stages mentioned - marking and drilling - have already been discussed above. What remains is preparing the shelf and hanging it.
Preparation
Preparations include:
- preparation of the necessary tools and materials;
- determining the location of the shelf;
- determination of shelf fastening devices;
- assembling and attaching attachments to the shelf (if necessary).
These issues are also discussed above, so let’s proceed with step-by-step instructions for hanging a shelf.
Step-by-step instruction
Algorithm for hanging a shelf on a bathroom wall:
- Fasteners are marked;
- Holes for dowels are drilled: first in the tile, then in the wall;
- Dowels are inserted;
- Brackets or supporting devices of other types of fasteners are screwed. Or just shelves with a hanging device hung on them;
- The correctness of the hitch is checked by level and adjusted if necessary.
Alternatives: liquid nails, sealant or suction cups
If it is difficult to drill beautiful tiles or you are not sure that the shelf option is final, then you can use alternative methods of hanging shelves:
- suckers;
- liquid Nails;
- sealant;
- stainless steel seam hooks.
Such options have one common serious drawback - unreliability. For most of them, shelves made of lightweight material are suitable. In addition, they cannot be loaded with heavy loads.
Adhesive fastening method
Bedroom shelves above the bed
For adhesive mounting, you can use either double-sided tape or glue. There is also a mechanical method of attaching glass to the wall, but we will return to this a little later.
Connecting the product to the surface using tape is the simplest method. However, with this type of fastening, use only double-sided tape. First you need to peel off one protective layer from it and secure the tape along the wall. Then you apply the glass to the wall, remove the top protective layer from the tape, releasing the adhesive side, and press the glass firmly.
Although this method is simple, it also has a number of disadvantages. Often the object being strengthened is placed unevenly, and it will be very difficult to tear it off the surface and reattach it there. If this is a corridor, then you risk tearing off the wallpaper along with it; the sight will not be the best. To prevent this from happening, after gluing the tape to the intended fastening location, apply a thin layer of sealant along it. But when working with it, remember: it should not go outside. By applying a sealant, you can take into account possible gaps before securing the glass object and fix it straight and level.
If you want to use glue when attaching glass with your own hands, then we advise you to choose a silicone-based glue of the “liquid nails” type. The algorithm for working with glue will be as follows:
- Apply glue to the entire glass product in a thin layer around the perimeter.
Then, having assessed all the risks, eliminating the possibility of a crooked arrangement, we sharply press the surface against the wall; Adhesive fastening method - It is necessary for the glass to dry to the surface. To do this, it is advisable to press something weighty against it for some time (perhaps even up to a day). If we are talking about a tall mirror or glass product from floor to ceiling, then it is better to find a large box, for example, from a refrigerator and press it tightly against the wall;
- After the glue has dried, the remaining gap between the glass and the wall should be treated with sealant around the perimeter of the glass.
The surface on which you plan to mount the glass must first be cleaned not only of dirt, but also of wallpaper. Outline the area with chalk around the perimeter of the glass and work it thoroughly.
Mounting a glass shelf
Fastening polypropylene pipes to the wall. Types and methods of fastening, installation tips
So, first you need to screw the brackets to the glass shelf. To do this, brackets are inserted into the corresponding holes. They must match perfectly. If this is not the case, the glass shelf can be considered defective and in this case it is better to replace it. From the kit that comes with the shelf you need to take bolts (which I usually make with countersunk heads) and nuts of the appropriate size. Using these fasteners, the brackets are tightly screwed to the shelf. At the same time, you should not overdo it so that the load on the glass is not too strong, otherwise the shelf may crack. When the brackets are securely fastened in the holes, the shelf is placed against the wall in a strictly horizontal position. This can only be done using a building level. It is not recommended to display a shelf by eye, because even professionals are often let down by the so-called “eye”. Using a pencil or marker, mark the points that will symbolize future holes for the brackets, after which the glass shelf can be put aside for a while. Now, using a drill, holes are drilled at pre-designated points
It is very important to choose the correct diameter of the drill, otherwise the shelf may not be securely fixed in place. Finally, when everything is ready, the shelf is put back into place, the brackets are inserted into the holes and the fixing screw is tightened. Decorative overlays (plugs) are placed on the ends of the protruding brackets, at which point the installation of the glass shelf can be considered complete.

So, now you know where to order glass shelves so that they are not only affordable, but also of excellent quality.
Materials
It is difficult to decide on the material from which the shelf is made. As usual, we want it to be high quality, beautiful and inexpensive. You probably understand that only two out of three requests can be satisfied at the same time. Everyone has their own concept of beauty, but if your taste is not so refined as to deny plastic, then it is quite possible to combine all three requirements in plastic. But “inexpensive” is relative to, say, stainless steel. And very cheap ones can hardly be called durable.
Shelf made of glass and metal
Plastic
The good thing about plastic bathroom shelves is that you can safely hang them in the shower stall. They feel great under running water. At least put it in a bath of water. Just to ensure there are no problems with cleaning, make sure that there is a possibility of moisture drainage. There are a variety of models - floor-mounted, corner-mounted, and wall-mounted. Moreover, mounting on suction cups is available. Few people, unfortunately, hold up well. But if the tile is smooth, without relief, chances are you're in luck.
Plastic shelves can be of different shapes and installation methods
If we talk about special designs, then, perhaps, only plastic and stainless steel are used to make shelves on the sides of the bathtub. But the price of stainless steel is like that of an airplane wing. We can’t find them here, but it’s a very convenient thing. There is another option - mounted ones. These are models that can be hung on the shower partition if it is not up to the ceiling (pictured below left). Such options can still be found among metal ones, but the word “cheap” does not apply to high-quality models.
This shelf is installed on the sides of the bathroom. Everything is at hand and you don’t have to get up for soap or a washcloth
A couple more practical points. First. If your water is hard, it is better to take light shades - salt deposits are not so visible on them. The second point also concerns the choice of shelf color, but the approach is from a design point of view. If the design turns out to be boring, you can add some color with bright plastic accessories - you’ll get a “cheerful” bath. If you prefer a more restrained style, choose gray, brown, black. Play with contrasts.
Glass and mirror
Glass shelves are considered dangerous by many. Maybe so, but think about it, have you ever heard of someone hurting themselves with a glass shelf? It’s just that shelves in the bathroom are usually located in places where they are difficult to damage. Above the sink, in the corners of the bathroom. In addition, thick glass is used, which is difficult to damage. Of course, if you have children who are fidgety and experimental, then it’s probably not worth it. But if everyone is past the age of unrestrained exploration of the world, you can hang glass shelves in the bathroom without any problems.
It is impossible to split such thickness
Why are they so good? Because they look good in both large and small spaces. In small ones they provide an additional plus, since they do not visually clutter up the space. They are almost invisible. Only the holders stick out from the wall, and the shelves themselves are “weightless” and transparent.
When buying a glass shelf, you can safely look for ones with stainless steel holders and “swing” at good companies. There is not too much stainless steel there, so beauty will result in a small amount. If the price of the assembled shelf still shocks you, look for holders for glass shelves in furniture fittings stores. You can also find limiters there if you want to install them.
The models are not particularly complicated, so you can easily make them yourself
Ask the shelf itself to be cut in a glass workshop. There they will process the edges and make holes for you. Just be sure to clarify that you need it. By the way, there are colored glasses and frosted ones. So “transparency” is optional. Mirrors can also be used. Or patterned glass, and to reduce cleaning problems, turn the “patterned” side down.
From a maintenance point of view, glass is a normal material. But if the water is hard, marks and stains remain. In this case, do not take “transparent” ones, it will be easier with frosted ones.
Metal shelves
The most popular and perhaps the most difficult type to choose. It's not about the form, but about the choice of manufacturer. Metal bathroom shelves can be:
- made of stainless steel;
- chrome plated (regular steel or brass with a coating layer);
- enameled;
- with powder coating.
Shelves made of metal
The most durable are shelves made of stainless steel. But high-quality ones are very expensive, and there are no “average” ones in price. The assortment includes cheap ones and then very expensive ones with a sharp price gap. Prices differ by 5 times or more. Cheap ones are stainless steel that rusts. First at the welding points, then further, because there are few alloying metals, and during welding they also burned out. Well, the expensive ones are those that are made of metal with normal properties, and even welded in a protective environment.
In the middle of the price range are chrome shelves. Everything is fine for the first six months. And then, if the quality is not too high, the coating will peel off and rust will appear. This is if the steel is coated with chrome. If it is brass, then over time a greenish tint appears, which cannot be removed by anything. Domestic shelves suffer from this. European manufacturers don’t have this problem, but the price is almost the same as good stainless steel, so there’s no point in buying them. I just liked the model.
The variety of designs is also not too great - usually grids
Enameled and powder-coated metal shelves are an economical option. They cost quite a bit, but they don’t last long either. In theory, powder coating should hold up well, but somehow we haven’t seen any good ones yet. It will climb in literally six months.
If we talk about manufacturers of metal shelves for the bathroom, you can buy expensive ones without much doubt. In the sense that they are usually of good quality. If you want the ones that have already been tested, here they are:
- SMEDBO (Smedbo) has an average price range (as for high-quality products), good quality and a wide range (in the catalog it is definitely wide).
- Groe is more expensive, but beautiful and lasts a long time.
- Hansgrohe - very beautiful and high quality, but very expensive.
Of course, there are other manufacturers of metal bath shelves, but there is no reliable operating experience, so we will not name them. If you have any proven brands, please write in the comments. Or, conversely, there is a negative operating experience. In any case, it will be useful for everyone.
Wooden
We practically do not consider wooden shelves. We are used to the fact that wood in the bathroom is impractical. But it is used outdoors, used to make decking around the pool. The operating conditions there are much worse. It’s just that now there are means that can make wood insensitive to water. And these are not varnishes. Or rather, not only them.
Although we don’t associate wood with a bathroom, it looks great here
Wood treated with special oil is not covered with a film, remains “rough” to the touch, but ceases to absorb moisture. She is not afraid of either water or steam. The wood texture remains, the color is optional. You can leave it “native”, you can make it darker/lighter, or add some shade. In general, there are options.
Made from artificial stone
Another unusual material for bathroom shelves is artificial stone. There are no more questions here - he is definitely not afraid of water. It’s just heavy, so such shelves require walls with good load-bearing capacity. They can be installed on brackets or embedded studs.
Shelves made of artificial stone. The color can be chosen as desired, as well as the size and shape
They are not on sale, but you can order them according to your size and desire from companies that make sinks. Just check with them about the technology. An artificial stone in which the mineral component (crushed stone, quartz sand, etc.) will be at least 80% will be used normally. The remaining 20% is a synthetic binder. And it’s good if it’s acrylic resin (copolymers).
Installation of glass fittings
Fittings for glass tables, doors and other similar items must be installed with great care. If there are no special skills in this matter, then it is best to entrust it to a professional
To perform this operation you will need a tool, as well as other items. The list of them depends on the type of mounted fittings.
The set of necessary tools includes:
- screwdrivers (phillips and slotted);
- hexagons;
- drill;
- a set of drills for wood, metal, reinforced concrete;
- dowels;
- special glue.
Adhesive for glass and metal
Items such as hexagons and screwdrivers are necessary in order to disassemble the mechanism into its component parts before installation. Of course, a drill and drill bits are necessary for drilling.
If fittings for glass doors are installed, you will need to secure the hinges to the door frame. This must be done using sufficiently long dowels. If it is necessary to install mechanisms for lightweight glass sheets and drilling is not required, glue is used to connect the fittings and the glass sheet.
It is necessary to remember one very important nuance when choosing glue. It must retain its transparency after drying.
Especially if fittings for glass shelves are attached. Otherwise, the appearance of the furniture may be spoiled by the appearance of ugly dried glue.
Dried glue that has changed color
Installation of fittings with glue
Fittings for glass cabinets, as well as other similar furniture and objects (doors, display cases) are most often attached with ordinary glue. In most cases, this process does not cause difficulties even for people who have never performed such operations. Installation of fittings on glass doors is carried out as follows:

fittings are being prepared;
Preparation of fittings - rubber gaskets and other elements are inspected
- special glue is applied to the surface of the fittings at the fastening point and to the glass;
- using the included mechanisms present in the device or a clamp, it is necessary to firmly press the surface to be glued;
- After drying, the fittings are attached to the door frame.
It is very important to remember that when using a clamp or other similar devices you should be as careful as possible. Excessive force can simply lead to the appearance of a crack in the glass or even to its splitting into several parts.
All operations must be performed with extreme caution
Installation of fittings with drilling
Most often, fittings for glass display cases require drilling during installation, since the weight of such structures is quite large and the glue may simply not hold it. To perform this work you will need the following tools:
- drill with adjustable speed;
- special drills for glass;
- soft surface with a large area;
- a set of screwdrivers and hexagons for working with the mechanism.
Particular attention should be paid to the drill and drill set, since the success of the work being performed greatly depends on the quality of these items. The drill must maintain a low enough rotation speed so as not to damage the glass or heat it.

The process of installing fittings with drilling is as follows:
the door frame is prepared - places for attaching hinges are marked, the door itself is tried on in place;
Preparing the box and fitting the door leaf in place
The door is marked and the locations for making holes are marked;

The process of installing glass elements in furniture is quite complicated
Maximum caution must be taken, as it is very easy to damage or even break the glass. It is best to first familiarize yourself with the video manual, which covers the process of installing hinges, handles and other accessories in as much detail as possible.
Shelf holders for glass
Such an inconspicuous but very important detail as a glass shelf holder carries a serious burden of responsibility for the safety of an expensive item and compliance with safety. He is responsible for the safety of everything that is on the shelves. It depends on modest little devices whether a shelf can withstand a particular weight.
Nowadays, there are a large number of shelf holders on the domestic furniture fittings market. Italy is the leader in this industry. It is their production that can be compared as the highest quality, affordable, and at the same time the design is at its best. It is also worth emphasizing that the shelf holders presented on the domestic market are of good quality.
Nowadays, furniture performs more of an aesthetic function, rather than the function of a “keeper of things” within itself. Therefore, most manufacturers offer a wide selection of accessories to suit every taste.
At the same time, you can choose the right glass shelf holder based on design and construction, as well as functional characteristics. In turn, all shelf holders can be divided into several categories: shelf holders for chipboard shelves, shelf holders for glass shelves, shelf holders-ties, decorative and universal shelf holders. But do not forget that the main task of such a product is to hold on it the load that is located on it.
DIY glass shelves
When horizontality is achieved, tighten the self-tapping screw. Once again, use a level to check the accuracy of the fastening.
5.
Now that the base is installed, you need to install the console itself. The console is inserted into the grooves under the base and secured with a screw. Using the same fastening screw, the shelf itself is fixed in the console, i.e. it just clamps down like a beak.
6.
In principle, after this moment the fastening is considered installed. But in order to secure a shelf in it, especially a glass one, you need to install the plastic covers supplied in the kit. Wooden or metal shelves can be fixed without them, but they must be installed under glass ones.
7.
Now all that remains is to secure the shelf itself. The thickness of the shelves may vary. This mount allows you to mount shelves with a thickness from 2mm to 20mm. But "pelicans" can vary in size. Using the console, the drawing of which was shown at the beginning of the article, you can mount shelves up to 40mm thick; this is considered a large “pelican”, while the one shown in the article is medium in size. In most cases, 3 sizes are used: small, medium and large.
So, when the consoles are secured, all that remains is to insert the shelf itself and tighten the lower, movable part of the console with a screw. You can verify the accuracy of the installation by placing a level on the shelf.

How to attach glass to a wall - two methods for solving the problem
Shelf holders
There are two so-called. fasteners for glass to the wall, with which you can install glass shelves - these are holders for the latter and a special aluminum profile. Both methods of fastening fulfill their assigned tasks. There is only one difference between them - a different method of installing glass.
In addition, the holders are universal, thanks to them you can attach glass of any thickness to the wall, while an aluminum profile, on the contrary, fits a certain size. However, the latest mount for a glass shelf has one significant advantage - you can insert LEDs into the aluminum profile and illuminate the glass inside. You can read more about this in the article on our website “Illuminated Glass Shelves”.
To understand which aluminum profiles are suitable for attaching glass shelves, the article “Aluminum profile - description of its various types and designs” will help you. Also familiarize yourself with the various types and configuration options of aluminum profiles. The world's leading manufacturer of aluminum profiles, including such specific ones as for mounting glass shelves with suspension - the Scandinavian company Sapa Building System. Profile for glass shelf
The fastener for a glass shelf is quite easy to install - it consists of two elements: a base attached to the wall, and an upper decorative support. Separating them is quite simple - the base can be easily pulled out of the upper support.
Then, when the holder is disassembled, use a level to mark the shelf mounting surface on the wall. The base of the shelf holder is marked relative to this surface using dowels, which are included with the mount.
Illuminated glass shelves
Please note that only two holders are needed to attach one glass shelf. They are used to fasten the glass to the wall end-to-end, on both sides of the shelf with a gap of at least 5 cm from the edge. However, depending on the length of the glass shelf and the planned load on it, the number of holders may be greater.
Despite the variety of fastening methods, the main requirement is reliability and perfection.
Features of self-installation of glass products
When installing glass structures yourself, you must follow a number of rules to ensure that the product is functional and lasts a long time.
- They determine the location of the glass structure or object, where it will be located - in the bathroom or in the hallway.
- Choose a suitable fastening method (adhesive mounting or installation of special fittings).
- Having chosen the fastening method using fittings, select the appropriate fasteners.
- Depending on the fasteners, they are installed in the correct order.
- Check the reliability of the work performed.
Tips for installing mirrors yourself
When installing a mirror yourself, you should consider many factors. Each material requires a certain type of fastener.
The mirror is fixed to the concrete wall using glue. It is worth considering that glue is not always able to withstand a massive product, so you can use a combination of glue with double-sided tape.
The mirror sheet is fixed to the plasterboard wall using holders. It must be remembered that drywall can be deformed if there is a strong impact on it, so the weight of the mirror sheet should be taken into account.
Rules for installing glass shelves yourself
Attaching a glass shelf yourself is not difficult, if you consider the following:
- To secure a shelf no more than 50 cm long and 20-25 cm wide, only two holders are required, but if you intend to install a longer shelf, the number of holders increases.
- Before installing fittings for a glass shelf, you should mark its location (the holders must be attached so that the shelf is horizontal and level without distortion).
- When installing several shelves, it is better to start installation from the top row.
By following these tips, you can independently carry out a number of activities to install any glass element and structure.

Assembly and installation of a suspended structure
Scheme of a hanging shelf made of slats.
We assemble the holder frame from the prepared bars. Using self-tapping screws, we attach side bars (250 mm) to the long beam at the ends, and shortened bars (170 mm) in a row between them. All frame elements must lie in the same plane. We will attach the front strip in place to make it easier to attach the holder to the wall.
Using a drill, drill holes for the screws in the rear frame bar. Using them, we make level marks on the wall where we plan to hang the shelf.
Then we drill holes in the wall according to the marks and insert dowels into them. The assembled part of the frame is attached to the wall using a screwdriver. The front block is attached to it with self-tapping screws, completing the fastening of the shelf holder.
The procedure for installing an anchor in a plasterboard wall for mounting a wall shelf.
The frame of the shelf itself is made of 3 bars (without the back) with the same cross-section as that of the mounting frame. We attach the prepared plywood strips to the frame with a stapler or self-tapping screws, depending on the thickness of the sheathing. The surface of the frame can be coated with wood glue. We cover the end parts of the shelf (except for the back) with strips of plywood or decorative trim.
The width of the U-shaped frame must ensure that the hollow structure can be placed on the holder.
The joints of the box elements and above the heads of the screws are puttied, the surface is cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper, primed and painted. After drying, the shelf box is placed on the holder frame. At the wall, the plywood is screwed with self-tapping screws to the back plank. Using a similar assembly principle, you can make shelves with side walls and a top.

Point elements for fixing glass to the wall
Today, the most popular point mounting is “glass-wall”. Read more about this in the article on our website “Fittings for glass shelves”.
Let's proceed to the direct step-by-step installation of glass shelves to the wall:
1. Determine the place on the wall where the glass shelf will hang. To do this: carefully place the product to the planned location and use a pencil to mark the locations for fasteners and contours.
Important! If you want to attach a glass shelf to decorative stands, first mark out the locations for them. Please note that the racks must be without distortion, t
e. strictly in a vertical position.
Marking
2. Using an electric drill, drill holes for fasteners (screws, self-tapping screws or screws) in the marked places. Determine the depth of these holes based on the length of the fasteners. The greater the load on the glass shelf, the longer the fastening element should be. Typically the length of the screws is from 55 to 65 mm.
3. To make precise holes, wrap the drill bit in a certain place on the electric drill using insulating tape.
4. Insert suitable sized wooden plugs or dowels into the resulting holes.
Important! If you made a glass shelf yourself, then select special brackets that are designed for installing glass shelves with the appropriate dimensions.
5. Separate the mount or brackets from the shelf.
6. Install the brackets one by one using self-tapping screws to the places prepared in advance on the wall.
Important! Make sure that the surfaces for future glass are parallel to the floor plane and there are no distortions. Otherwise, under heavy loads, excess stress may appear on the glass plane, which will cause chips. Installing glass
Glass installation
In addition, carefully inspect the glass from which the shelves are made. The corners of the glass should be polished and rounded. And the glass itself should have a glossy surface without any cracks, scratches or chips.
7. If there are no defects on the glass, then feel free to attach it in the intended place.
Important! If the shelf has several levels, then first you need to make a fastening for the glass shelf of the upper glass, and then the lower one.
8. The shelf is attached to the wall. Place on it everything that you consider necessary.

Glass shelves will never go out of style, especially in apartments with a modern style. This is one of the simplest and most multifunctional decorative elements. However, it is often the proper fastening of glass shelves to the wall that causes some difficulties, without which they will not become an effective and safe addition to the interior. The fewer fittings and fasteners, the lighter the transparent structure made of glass elements looks, on which anything can be placed in any room.
Table of contents:
- Glass shelves in the interior
- Advantages of glass as a material for making shelves
- Types of transparent shelves
- Methods for attaching holders for glass shelves
Glass shelves in the interior
A collection of rare items, a shelf for books or CDs, a stand for hanging indoor plants - you never know what corner glass shelves on the wall can be useful for. Their uniqueness is that even if you make a whole rack for shelves or a niche in the wall, it will not look bulky. Many shelves on brackets or special holders can easily replace wooden cabinets for equipment in the living room or other cabinet furniture in any room. They are appropriate in the bedroom and bathroom, in the kitchen and in the office, for example, glass shelves on the wall, photo:
The multi-seat and multi-level glass structure looks elegant and light. It seems that not only light, but also air penetrates through the transparent stands. Made from durable and thick glass, glass wall shelves have a decent weight but look almost weightless. They are practically invisible, so they do not clutter up the space, and this is an indispensable property for decorating small rooms where there is not enough space for full-fledged furniture.
But at the same time, the effect of empty space is successfully used by designers for other purposes:
- for zoning large rooms;
- for decorating a minimalist interior;
- to replace bulky hanging shelves made of wood, etc.
The interior of any room with “invisible” shelves will be transformed, it will become more refined, sophisticated and modern. The fragile-looking structure, when properly fastened to the wall, can withstand a fairly large load. For example, a whole winter garden of transparent shelves on the window for a collection of indoor violets lets in the light, and it looks like a miniature “Garden of Babylon”.
Designers have offered many interesting options for attaching glass shelves. And the material itself may vary:
- thick tempered glass - for heavy objects;
- corner rounded shelves made of usually glass - for shampoos and soaps in the bathroom;
- colored or black glass - to decorate the wall for equipment;
- stained glass or frosted glass with LED lighting in a niche is an effective decorative element in itself, regardless of what is placed on it.
Traditionally, a row of glass shelves at equal distances is an excellent bathroom solution that has been used for many decades. But this technique has also come to other functional rooms, since transparent shelves have an advantage over bulky structures made of wood and chipboard. Glass shelves are visually almost invisible; they can be used occasionally when they are made in the form of a collapsible structure. Glass shelves, due to their “invisible” properties, are appropriate both under the ceiling and near the floor surface. They are used for zoning space in any plane:
- on the walls;
- in niches;
- in the corners;
- along the walls;
- in window openings and walls.
Quite heavy objects can be placed on a regular shelf made of thick glass, if it is properly secured. For example, a corner design with an aluminum mount can easily support a modern TV, not to mention a plasma panel or monoblock. And if thick glass is properly processed at the end, rounded shelves without corners will be a completely safe decorative element in any room.
Properly fixed corner glass shelves on the wall in a teenager’s room can be adapted for anything:
- for exotic plants;
- for equipment and CDs;
- for musical instruments and accessories;
- for souvenirs and photos;
- for Hand-made items and hobbies;
- for cosmetics and perfumes;
- for books and magazines;
- for motorcycle helmets and sports hats, etc.
On transparent shelves in the living room, collectible items, souvenirs made of precious stones, crystal dishes or Murano glass vases look most advantageous. And in the bedroom, gem jewelry on illuminated glass and mirror shelves looks simply luxurious, like in an expensive jewelry boutique. They are in harmony with mirrors and large windows, with lampshades and transparent cabinet doors.
Attention: Do-it-yourself glass shelves are not recommended for placing “everything in a row.” It is better to make a thematic rack, for example, only for indoor plants or for equipment.
Advantages of glass as a material for making shelves
Glass is an environmentally friendly, fragile material that can break if handled improperly. But it has a lot of advantages:
- excellent aesthetic properties in the interior;
- saving space and the possibility of fully replacing obsolete hanging decorative elements;
- is not afraid of water, it is easy to wash, clean and disinfect, resistant to chemicals and cleaning agents;
- transmits up to 95% of light, but is not susceptible to UV radiation;
- does not absorb odors, and settling suspensions are easy to remove from the surface;
- durable, reliable material with proper use;
- does not crack or deform under normal load;
- does not respond to temperature changes and changes in air humidity.
To update the design of an apartment after renovation, the easiest way is to make glass shelves on the wall with your own hands. Thanks to the availability of glass shelves, which can be ordered in any workshop, it is easy to find all the fittings necessary for mounting in building materials stores. The range of fittings that can be used under glass shelves includes:
- shelf holders,
- connectors;
- aluminum profile;
- corner fasteners, etc.
Types of transparent shelves
Transparent shelves do not have to be made only from ordinary glass; other similar materials are also suitable:
- plexiglass, lightweight organic or unbreakable glass, is not cut, but sawed out, it does not break, but bends under the weight, scratches remain on the surface;
- transparent plastic transmits light worse, but is less fragile in use;
- flexible transparent plastic - more suitable for transverse elements in a transparent structure, does not withstand weight and heavy operating load.
Tip: Ideally, it is best to use tempered clear or colored glass. Smooth polished shelves made of corrugated glass, if you have any leftovers, mount them with the patterned side down for easy cleaning. It is safest to entrust the cutting of glass elements to a master glass workshop, where they will polish the edges and round the corners, and they can offer figured cutting. For example, a shelf with an oval edge slightly convex forward looks impressive under equipment.
It’s easy to make glass shelves yourself if you have room for these purposes, a high-quality glass cutter and a grinder. However, equipment can be rented for 1 day. When processing the edge, it is constantly watered. This type of work requires basic experience, skills and knowledge of technology.
By type of fastening, the most common glass shelves are:
- wall-mounted (a laconic solution for replacing cabinet furniture);
- suspended, can be movably attached to walls and ceilings with chains, cords, etc.;
- corner, the most common type of fastening, especially in the bathroom;
- floor, console type, using supports;
- multi-tiered structures where various types of do-it-yourself installation are used.
When choosing this or that type of design, remember that the price of glass shelves on the wall will directly depend on:
- thickness and quality of the selected material;
- type of glass processing (self-cutting or custom-made by a master);
- appropriate fittings for fastening;
- number of planes.
Self-made glass shelves do not have to be mounted only on the wall. They may be adjacent:
- to the side surface of cabinet furniture;
- to mirrors;
- serve as a fixed jumper between cabinets, etc.
Methods for attaching holders for glass shelves
For an effective design, it is important to think about several options for placing glass shelves on the wall or in the corner. An important role is played by the number of transparent planes, their location, proportional ratio and distance between the shelves. The type of fastening and shape of the shelves is the basis for the design of a glass block on the wall. However, it is not necessary to make a lot of shelves; you can limit yourself to 1-2 in each room.
1. It is best to secure it using ready-made fittings for glass shelves, and round the shape so that they are not traumatic. This is especially important in an apartment where there are children and animals who like to jump from shelf to shelf. Therefore, in such families, the shelves should be located at a sufficient height from the floor.
After the ideal corner or free wall has been found for the glass shelf, markings are made where future shelves will be attached. To do this, from one point where the fastening to the wall should be, a plumb line and a level are drawn horizontally and vertically so that the glass shelves are attached strictly horizontally. You can mark the lines with a pencil and a universal laser level, or use simple tools and secure masking tape along the marked lines.
For work you will also need:
- prepared thick glass with a processed end;
- fittings for shelves or other fasteners;
- power tool for fixing dowels in the wall;
- corners or metal plates for fastening glass (if intended).
2. Ready-made shelf holders are distinguished by the fact that everything is already provided for them - a part for mounting to the wall and a part for attaching glass. There are often additional structural elements - limiters, sides or decorative fragments. Each shelf requires at least 2 holders or one horizontal element with 2-point wall mounting.
For this type of shelves, you need to purchase a decorative aluminum profile that matches the thickness of the glass. Holes through which the dowels will be attached are pre-drilled in the section of the profile, and the edges of the profile are sanded. The finished fragment is attached to the wall with self-tapping screws and plastic parts. And for corner glass shelves on the wall, be sure to make 1-2 holders for each wall.
3. It is also possible to fasten the shelves using 2 vertical chrome-plated tubes - with grooves cut into them for glass, which are mounted on the wall in parallel so that the shelves are inside the structure. This is how wall racks are made in the style:
- high tech;
- techno;
- urbanism;
- constructivism.
4. There is also a method of installing shelves that involves additional fixation with brackets through holes in the glass. For this purpose, the holes are ordered in advance in the workshop; the holes must also be ground. Further installation to the wall at the designated points will not be difficult.
5. Another method of fastening is on wooden slats, in which grooves for glass are cut. All that remains is to select fittings for reliable fastening to the wall. By the way, this installation is used for glass lintels between wall cabinets or at the ends of cabinets.
Tip: It is convenient to make profiles for fastening shelves using this method - we fix one side with a screw, align it along the intended horizontal line and mark a point in the wall through the second prepared hole and secure it completely. Next, all that remains is to insert the glass and securely fix it in this holder.
To place all the equipment in one corner, you will need a whole glass rack or shelf complex. You can show your imagination and use different glasses:
- mirrored;
- colored;
- black;
- matte;
- sandblasting;
- decorative.
The most powerful shelf is made around the TV, so the mount should be of the corner type. It is advisable to place the TV slightly above eye level relative to the viewer’s sofa or chair - at the border of the first third of the angle from the floor. The shelf above is mounted taking into account the installed TV. It is important to think about how to hide the outlet, extension cords and wires.
Tip: When drilling holes in concrete, a lot of cement dust is released. To eliminate this nuisance, you can simultaneously use the vacuum cleaner turned on.
Another interesting idea is to frame the glass shelves with diode tape, which will create beautiful lighting. More details on installation - glass shelves on the wall, video:
How to make bathroom shelves with your own hands - manufacturing instructions
You can make bathroom shelves with your own hands in different ways, and all of them are not at all complicated. Here you can go in two ways - in one case it is quite easy to build glass wall shelves, and in the other case built-in ones from plasterboard or glass. It’s up to you to choose – we, in turn, will tell you how to make them better and faster.
Let's start with glass shelves; this is the easiest option to implement with your own hands. To do this, you will need to decide on the dimensions of the shelves (length and width) and go to a glass workshop where you can order the necessary pieces of glass. Now all that remains is to securely fasten them on the wall or, if we are talking about built-in shelves, then in a niche.
How to make a glass shelf with your own hands
To attach glass shelves, as a rule, special decorative holders are used, which are attached to the wall at the same horizontal level. Glass cut out in the workshop is inserted into these holders
When approaching this issue, you need to understand the importance of the thickness of the glass used for the shelves - the best option would be ordinary glass 4mm thick. To protect yourself and your loved ones from injury from shards of broken glass, it is better to cover it with film (you can also do this step yourself)
In addition, using the same film you can decorate a shelf.
In this video you can see how to make a corner shelf for a bathroom with your own hands.
Another option with which you can make a bathroom shelf with your own hands is plasterboard - a fairly cheap and affordable method. Frames for shelves are mounted in an existing or self-made niche from ud and cd profiles, which are subsequently covered with plasterboard and covered with tiles. As a result, you get a niche with shelves that fits harmoniously into the interior. If you are not very comfortable with drywall, then you can place glass shelves in a niche lined with tiles - it will be even more interesting.
How to make plasterboard shelves for a bathroom photo
There are also other methods and materials that make it quite easy to make shelves for the bathroom. The options described above are simply the most optimal and affordable for almost every person. As they say, there is no need to reinvent the wheel and be clever with what has already been mastered by other people for a long time - almost always the simplest solution is at the same time the correct one.
Drilling Features
The most difficult and responsible task of the entire work is drilling holes in tiles, which are a fragile material.
To prevent it from splitting or cracking when drilling, you need to be careful and follow the following rules:
- Carefully select places for drilling: they should not be close to the edge of the tiles or fall into the seam between them;
- In the drilling areas, you must first clean off the glaze or chip the surface to prevent the drill from slipping;
- When drilling, the perforation of the electric drill must be turned off. Otherwise, splitting of the tiles cannot be avoided;
- It is advisable to start with a drill of a smaller diameter than required for fastening dowels and at low rotation speeds. The final work with the holes will be completed with a drill of the required size.
To drill a concrete wall, concrete drills with Pobedit inserts of the appropriate size are used. In this case, you need to start with a small diameter.
Marking
Work begins with marking the locations of fasteners for the shelf. To do this, you need to measure the distances of the fastening devices on the product itself with a tape measure. The shelf may already have attached devices for hanging it in the form of steel eyes, hinges, corners, brackets made of various materials, clamps, and so on.
But more often these types of fastenings come complete with shelves, so you first need to decide on their location in place. What should be attached to the shelf should be attached, and what should be used only for support should be tried on the shelf.
Having decided on the size of the distances between the fasteners, you can transfer them to the wall. It is easier to do this if the existing hinges or brackets are already fixed on the shelf and their fastening part is visible.
Then you can simply attach the shelf to the wall using a level and mark the locations for the holes for future mounting dowels. For brackets, this is doable, but for most shelves used in modern bathrooms, this method is not useful, since they have invisible fastening devices.
In this case, marking is done according to the following algorithm:
- First, use a pencil or marker to mark one of the points for attaching the existing shelf to the surface of the tiled wall. We should not forget the rules for choosing the drilling location on the tile indicated above;
- After this, use a level to draw a horizontal line and mark the second fastening point on it based on the obtained distance between the locations of fastening devices on the shelf;
- Next you need to decide on the diameter and length of the screws and dowels. It doesn’t matter whether they were included with the shelves or not. The main thing is to know to what depth to drill holes for mounting dowels and their diameter;
- After this, you can begin the drilling process.
When choosing a place to hang a shelf, you need to make sure that there are no pipes or elements of other communications running through the wall.
Drilling tiles
To ensure everything goes smoothly, you need to follow the recommendations of experts:
- Check that the perforation mode is turned off in the electric drill;
- Using a core and a hammer, carefully make a chip on the surface of the tile at the marks for installing the fastening dowels;
- Using a glass cutter placed in the chips, use a circular motion to clear the drilling area of glaze, thereby marking and deepening the drilling points;
- Using a small diameter drill, drill a hole in the tile into the wall. This needs to be done at low speeds and with little force on the tool.
When the tile is drilled through, expand the diameter of the hole to the required size by changing the drill. Next you need to move on to drilling the wall.
Periodically it is necessary to cool the drill with water. This can be done under a tap or a spray bottle.
Drilling with a pobedit drill
At this stage of the work, replace the tile drill with a concrete drill. Most often, these drills come with a pobedit tip. Less commonly, the sting is performed entirely from the vibrator.
There are no special tricks here, except for one thing - if the wall is too hard, the perforation mode is activated. As already noted, it is better to start work with a small diameter drill. We recommend that the final stage of drilling a concrete wall be carried out using a metal drill of the required diameter.
Features of glass shelves for the bathroom
Glass is a complex but fairly common material used to make parts designed for human convenience. As for glass shelves for the bathroom, special plexiglass is used here, unbreakable and pre-heated to eliminate static stress. In the last few years, varieties of material have been introduced to the market that protect people from cuts. They can break if hit hard, but cannot cut a person. Such glass is most often used to make shelves in the bathroom.
When purchasing for a bathroom, it is recommended to give preference to frosted plexiglass, which will not lose its appearance in a short time, unlike simple transparent glass. On transparent products, drops of water are the first to be seen, so to maintain cleanliness, the housewife needs to constantly wipe them or wash the glass daily using cleaning products.
Assortment of fittings at our glass factory
Here you will find a large assortment of serial furniture products and original models that will help you achieve the desired result: everyone will be able to choose the option they like best, which will be most suitable for use in a particular setting. Chipboard shelf holders are reliable, durable and low cost. For example, the metal shelf holder RK 5x16 came from Soviet industry, but, despite this, it still holds its position. There are many more different shelf supports, but which one to choose is up to you.
A modern shelf holder for glass should be double-sided, have gaskets or tubes made of soft plastic or rubber, have protection against accidental falling out of the product’s mounting hole, fixing suction cups or other devices and clamps.
