To create a beautiful room interior, the question always arises of what to lay on the floor. The choice of products is narrowed if people are prone to allergies or if there are pets in the house - dogs or cats. Some people don’t want dust or wool to accumulate, so they are looking for more interesting options to replace the carpet. But it is important for everyone that the room is cozy, aesthetically pleasing and pleasant to be in.

Which floor covering is better to choose for your home?

A floor made of resistant materials is suitable: parquet, laminate or cork. In a bedroom where you want warmth and comfort, it is better to put softer floor coverings that retain heat: carpet or cork. For kitchens and wet rooms, waterproof and hygienic coatings will be practical. For example, tiles, linoleum and laminate.

Tiles in the kitchen

This option is suitable for those who want to decorate the kitchen area without resorting to textiles. Tiles laid on the floor in the form of a carpet create an interesting accent and fit perfectly into a classic style that is not overloaded with details. If the ceramic floor is supplemented with heating, the comfort of being in the kitchen increases several times. This option is being considered at the renovation stage.

Jute mats

Connoisseurs of Scandinavian minimalism and eco-style will love the lightweight and inexpensive coating made of durable jute twine. Jute mats are lint-free rugs made from a tropical plant similar to reeds. The products are environmentally friendly, durable and easy to clean. It is pleasant to walk on such a surface barefoot: it massages and exfoliates the feet. Another option for natural covering is a bamboo mat.

DIY rugs

Handmade products are especially valuable today. Any thing made with soul acquires its own history, thereby filling the interior with comfort and warmth. Instead of a traditional carpet, you can lay a patchwork rug, hand-sewn from old things, on the floor. To create it you will need old clothes, cut into even squares or other geometric shapes, and a backing. Patchwork style products are especially appreciated in Scandinavian and country style.

The rug can also be woven or hand-sewn from knitted yarn made from old T-shirts. Another option for replacing a traditional carpet is a thick-knit wool blanket. To work, you only need thick yarn and a few hours of free time.

Insulated linoleum

Unlike tiles, this flooring is much cheaper and easier to install. Many products qualitatively imitate the structure of wood, which is why linoleum is actively used in many modern interiors. You can choose a foam-based coating that has excellent thermal insulation and noise-absorbing properties. This linoleum is easy to clean and has high wear resistance.

There is also linoleum based on jute or felt. This flooring is very soft and pleasant to the touch, but requires special care and careful handling. Warm-based linoleum is appropriate in the bedroom and children's room.

How to close the gap at the door sill

The baseboard is installed, all that remains is to close the gaps at the doors. On sale there are all kinds of decorative strips and corners of different colors, which are screwed to the floor. But the laminate floor is floating, and if you screw such a plank to the laminate boards, then when the humidity and, accordingly, the size of the flooring changes, a gap will appear at the door threshold.

To close the gap at the door, I used a plinth, cutting half of it along the line of the cable channel. The result is a plastic corner. I attached the channel cable to the door threshold with its flat part facing downwards, and the decorative part of the baseboard closed the gap. I fixed the strip, clamping it with the door frames, but they still had to be removed and cut from below, since the floor had risen by 20 mm. You can secure the bar to the threshold with double-sided tape or silicone.

As you can see, the gap between the laminate and the door threshold has closed quite aesthetically.

It’s easier with linoleum, since it doesn’t float, although it dries out over time, and the gaps between the walls increase by a couple of millimeters. To close the gaps, I used a wooden bead, which is designed to secure glass in windows. It is enough to cover the glazing bead with a layer of transparent varnish or paint it and nail it to a couple of post nails or secure it with small screws.

But you can close the gap at the door threshold, as when laying laminate flooring, with a plinth cut lengthwise. In the photo, the floor is covered with linoleum with a laminate pattern.

If the gap between the door threshold and the edge of the linoleum is large, then joint-bridging coatings in the form of an aluminum shaped strip (profile) covered with a decorative film can help out.

Aluminum strips come in widths from 25 mm to 100 mm, arc height 4.5 mm. They are produced in lengths of 90, 1350, 1800 and 2700 cm. There is a wide range of coating colors, so you can choose a strip of a suitable tone.

First you need to take a sheet of paper and outline the profile of the platband on it. Then transfer the drawing to thick cardboard and, cutting along the line, make a template. The template must be attached to the platband and trimmed if it does not fit tightly. Now it will be enough to attach the template to the profile and draw a cutting line on it.

The profile is secured with a clamp or in a vice, then a cut is made along the line using a jigsaw into which a metal file is inserted. Aluminum is easy to saw, no more difficult than plywood. If you don’t have a jigsaw, you can first saw off the profile in a straight line and give it a rounded shape using a round file.

After giving the ends of the profile the required shape, to check it you need to install it in the planned place at the threshold. If everything fits exactly, then you can start removing the burrs.

Burrs are best removed using a round file. You can also use sandpaper. At the same time, chamfers are removed from sharp corners.

The profile is prepared for installation, and it’s time to screw it to the floor using self-tapping screws (they are usually included with dowels). As a rule, holes for self-tapping screws are already drilled in the profile. If the floor is wooden or plywood, then just use an awl to mark a hole and screw a self-tapping screw into it. The screws should not be overtightened, as the profile may be deformed. If the floor is not wooden, then you first need to drill holes in it for the dowels and screw the screws into them.

Joint-bridging coatings in the form of aluminum shaped strips can also be used to close the gap between the door threshold and the laminate flooring. But in this case, you need to screw the screws securing the profile into the base under the laminate, and make grooves in the places where the screws pass through the laminate so that the laminate boards can move freely without resting on the screws.

This is what the room looked like after installing the stretch ceiling, wallpapering and laminate flooring.

Fur skin

One of the traditional ways to replace a carpet is with a fur skin, which can be laid in both the bedroom and living room. The most preferable option is faux fur, which does not require special care. Dark skins need to be vacuumed and combed, but light skins will sometimes have to be dry cleaned. Some short-pile items can be machine washed on a gentle cycle. The fur skin often becomes the center of the composition around which the interior is built.

Pillows

Floor pillows are a know-how in a modern interior that can replace traditional carpets. The pillow acts as a chair and blanket, as well as sports equipment. For example, you can use it to exercise. Even just lying on a large comfortable pillow is always pleasant.

Their shape depends on the designer’s imagination. Square, round, in the form of a roller, pouf, toy, rope, they look harmonious in any setting.

To add an oriental flavor, gold tassels are sewn onto the pillows. Japanese style - soft seats arranged around a low table.

Carpet

For those who like to walk around the house without slippers or socks, carpet is the ideal covering. It is easy to install, has a pleasant structure and retains heat well. If you care for your carpet properly (using a vacuum cleaner with a water-cleaning function), it will last for many years. The coating traps dust and dirt in one area, preventing small debris from leaking into other rooms.

The disadvantage of synthetic carpet is that some of its components can cause allergic reactions. Natural coating does not have such a disadvantage.

How to treat the edges of carpet?

The edges of natural carpet can be treated with matches or a lighter. To do this, you need to singe the shiny edges. In this matter, the main thing is to be very careful and careful not to burn the carpet. This processing method is best used for artificial carpets.

Options for replacement

Deciding what to replace carpet on your floor with can be done for a variety of reasons. Some people don’t like the dirt and hair that constantly accumulate on the carpet, while others don’t like the design itself. In families with animals, the carpet quickly becomes dirty; for allergy sufferers, the carpet can turn into a source of dust. At the same time, the carpet can be easily replaced so that the room remains cozy and beautiful.

DIY rugs

This is a great alternative to branded carpets. Products made by hand to order look much more interesting and make the interior more comfortable.

The rug itself can be anything:

  1. Made from old things in patchwork style. This option looks great in a rustic or Scandinavian interior;
  2. Made from merino wool, chunky knit. Such a rug can even replace a blanket;
  3. Made from regular wool. A simple round rug made of wool in 2-4 colors looks good;
  4. Made from faux fur. These rugs are easy to care for: just vacuum them and comb them regularly. Products with short pile can be washed in a machine.
  5. Bedspread or blanket. If they are thick enough, they can easily replace carpet.

Carpet

It can be synthetic or natural. The first one may cause allergies, but it lasts longer. It is worth noting that with good care, the product will last longer than a regular carpet.

Carpet is suitable for almost any room except the kitchen and bathroom. It adds coziness to the room and looks good in any room. However, the coating requires careful care: cleaning with a powerful vacuum cleaner with a water cleaning function.

Mats

These are inexpensive coverings made from jute (a tropical plant that looks like reed), bamboo, sisal, and sea grass. The mats are durable and environmentally friendly, resistant to moisture, easy to clean, and pleasant to walk on barefoot: thanks to the hard surface, they massage the feet well. The mats look good in a minimalist, Scandinavian or boho interior; fans of eco-style will also like them.

You can put one mat or weave several small ones together. It is easy to weave mats yourself using available patterns. To prevent the mat from sliding on the floor, you must choose a product with a rubber or fabric backing.

Cork floor

When deciding what to replace the carpet on the floor with, don’t forget about another eco-friendly covering – cork. They lay out the entire floor or individual areas; usually the coating is used in the bedroom, living room and nursery. Cork has high noise and thermal insulation properties, it is elastic and pleasant to the touch. The coating is easy to care for: it repels dust; just vacuum it regularly and wipe it with a damp cloth. In addition, cork flooring looks beautiful and will fit well into any interior.

Its disadvantages are high price and low strength. Cork is easily deformed by furniture legs and heels; it should be handled with care. Carpets made from it slide easily; you just need to glue them or rubberize the surface.

Insulated linoleum

It is inexpensive, easy to install and easy to clean. Linoleum is characterized by increased wear resistance, it has good heat and sound insulation properties. The choice of designs is quite large, for example, there is linoleum with imitation wood.

You can buy linoleum based on felt or jute. It is softer and more pleasant, but less durable and requires careful handling.

Tile

It's easy to decide what to put on the floor instead of carpet in the kitchen or bathroom. Tile is perfect here. Thanks to the variety of colors and patterns, it will fit well into any interior and can become an interesting accent or, on the contrary, “merge” with the background. If desired, you can supplement it with heating, increasing comfort.

Unusual options

Some options may seem strange, but they can easily replace the usual carpet.

We are talking about the following replacements:

  • Seat cushions . They can replace a chair, armchair and carpet; it is pleasant to sit or lie on them, relax or study. They can be of different shapes (for example, bean bags), thickness and colors, simple or with decoration: for example, for a child’s room these can be large toys.
  • Bright mats . This is a great replacement for carpet in a nursery, especially for little ones. They are resilient enough to walk on and soft enough so that a child can fall without getting hurt. Children can use small mats for games by fastening them together. To do this, it is better to buy mats with Velcro on the sides.
