Since double structures of this type are rarely used, the expression “garden swing sofa” usually means large sizes. After all, it must accommodate at least 3 people.

Let's consider the standard type of creating a street structure. Typically, the support posts are arranged in an A or P shape, and it has a canopy and seating for a group of people. To build a garden sofa for your dacha with your own hands, you can adhere to the following dimensions:

It is recommended to make the height at least 1.8 meters, even if the design is made for children. In some cases, you can even make it 2 meters high.
The length of the seat is calculated based on the planned number of people. It is necessary to allocate 0.4-0.5 meters per person. It turns out that for three people it is necessary to create a seat 1.5 meters in length. More than two meters is very rarely done, because then the whole structure turns out to be very bulky.
It is also worth correctly calculating the depth of the seat. Since the garden swing-sofa is created for comfortable relaxation, it is not recommended to make it less than 0.5 meters deep. Even at 90 centimeters, comfort will only be increased. Some owners of summer cottages build such a sofa with a short back or no back at all. In such cases, the seat can be 1.1 meters deep, turning it into a bed.
In addition to the listed dimensions, it is also worth considering the size of the backrest. It depends to a small extent on the size of the seat. If the seat is not deep, then it is recommended to build the backrest high. But with a standard depth, it is made 65 centimeters in height.

Before you make a garden swing from wood, you need to prepare the lumber - plan it until smooth, treat it with antiseptics, and cut it to size according to the drawing. If you have an electric planer or a hand router, chamfer the edges of the parts. This operation will allow you to avoid scratches or splinters during assembly and further operation of the structure.

If the supports are to be concreted, the production of the racks begins with processing the upper ends of the beams. To do this, they are cut at an angle, using a square or template for marking. A horizontal crossbar will later be attached along the cutting line.

The inclined posts are fastened together with boards in 2-3 places. They provide rigidity and serve for uniform load transfer.

If the supports are sufficiently stable, you can do without concreting. The side posts are cut along the bottom edge, having calculated in advance the angle of the beams at the top point, and then the joints of the semi-assembled structure are adjusted in place.

The crossbar is mounted “on edge” to provide the necessary bending strength. They are secured to the posts with through connections using bolts and washers. Additionally, the joints can be reinforced with galvanized or wooden overlays and staples.

When concreting, the lower part of the supports is wrapped with roofing felt and installed in pre-dug (or drilled with a hand drill) holes. A layer of crushed stone and sand is poured onto the bottom. The structure is fixed and the base is poured with concrete.

How to make a swing seat from wood

A 50x50 mm block is sawn into 60 cm long pieces. The height of the back and the width of the bench will be the same. The ends adjacent to each other are cut at a slight angle to give an anatomically comfortable shape - you can sit on such a seat, reclining slightly.

The frame elements are connected to each other with bolts or joined “together” and the fastening points are reinforced with glue and overlays. For a seat 1.2 m long, the bars are installed in increments of 40 cm.

The connection “to the paw” is performed as follows:

A rectangular or trapezoidal section is cut out at the ends of the timber.
Coat the joint planes with glue.
Connect in 2 mutually perpendicular directions.
Additionally, they are tightened with bolts, wood rivets or self-tapping screws.

Armrests are installed on the side of the bench at such a height that you can comfortably rest your hand. In addition to comfort when riding, they serve as protection against sideways falls.

Assembly of the structure

When the wooden supports of the garden swing are ready and stand securely on the ground, we begin to assemble the entire structure. First, strong suspensions (chains, ropes, ropes) are attached to the seat.

Use a powerful hinged bolt or a pin with a bent end, insert it into the hole drilled in the beam, and secure with a nut and washer;
Instead of a hairpin, you can take a piece of reinforcement or large nails and cut threads at their ends.
Wrap a strong chain around the crossbar several turns and secure with wire or a ring.

Important. To distribute forces evenly, wood fasteners are used together with washers. This protects soft wood from destruction as a result of dynamic loads.

In swings designed for light weight users, the role of fastenings can be played by the suspensions themselves. To do this, form loops at the ends of the rope and use them to secure the seat. The bench is suspended at a height of 40-60 cm from the ground. A higher or lower position is uncomfortable for placing your feet while riding.

DIY finishing of a wooden swing

However, if the structure is large and there is a risk of tipping over, it must be secured to pre-concrete supports. To do this, at the points where the lower elements touch the ground, depressions of approximately 1 m with a diameter of about 30 cm are made (usually the size of the shovel bayonet is the criterion).

When the recesses are ready, a pipe sleeve is inserted inside (you can simply roll up 2 layers of roofing material and distribute it inside the socket for a tight fit to the walls). After this, threaded metal elements (anchors) are installed that will protrude from the concrete.

When the preparatory procedures are completed, concrete pouring begins. It must be fed into the nest in one stream; taking breaks is not recommended.

The filled nests are kept until the final crystallization of the material. The process lasts about 2 weeks, so you need to choose a warm time of year. When the concrete hardens, the swing support parts are attached to the protruding threaded elements using specially welded eyes and nuts with washers.

How to care for a wooden swing

The tree is subject to the destructive effects of many unfavorable factors. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity cause wood to crack. Sun rays provoke photoaging. Woodworms gnaw through numerous passages, and mold and fungi quickly render wooden structures unusable.

Regular care will help protect against all this:

impregnation with antiseptic solutions;
treatment with waterproof paints;
varnishing with compositions for external use.

Events should be carried out at least once every 1.5-2 years.

Important. If possible, it is advisable to place the structure in a dry room for the winter, for example, a garage or shed. This will greatly extend the life of the garden swing.

Material for making sofas

Garden furniture should not be afraid of sudden changes in temperature and high humidity. If you visit your dacha all year round, then you need to look for furniture that does not deteriorate from frost. As for manufacturing, all garden sofas are made from both natural and synthetic materials.

People don’t start swinging on the hanging swing right away. For kids who have just learned how to properly rearrange their bottom two, it’s just right to ride on a pendulum swing. Which, by the way, also develops motor skills and strengthens the musculoskeletal system. Parents who have built a children's pendulum swing for their offspring are soon convinced: abrasions on the knees and elbows, broken noses, roaring and resentment from both have noticeably decreased. Although, of course, it’s still not without it. But the swing will help children develop reasonable caution and common sense, avoiding serious injury.

Parts marked (!) are made of hard, fine-grained deciduous wood - oak, beech, hornbeam, walnut. The ends of the pendulum axis do not need to be ground to a perfectly round shape: it is enough to plan them more or less evenly so that they fit into the sockets with a slight interference, and shake the board several times to get it to work in. If the fibers in the axle and support posts are oriented mutually perpendicular (which can be easily observed by cutting them from one board), then the swing will last for many years, and the rubbing surfaces will soon become mirror-smooth and durable, as if they were turned from steel on a machine.

The pendulum swing can be made portable so that, say, you can take it to the veranda for the winter. 2 ways to do this are shown there, pos. a and b. According to method a, the ends of the racks are concreted in an unusable tire; Method b is obvious and simpler, but both riders may fall to the side along with the swing. By the way, you can get a lot of other benefits from old swing tires; We will return to them later.

It’s even better, if there’s enough space, to put an additional lower support on the side, so that in addition you get a horizontal bar, see fig. below. In this case, it is preferable to make the entire sports corner, except for the horizontal bar crossbar, from a profile pipe, then the entire structure will be stronger, cheaper and technologically simpler.
Suspension of a rocking chair for children who already know how to swing is best suited to the rope scheme 2-2 (see below). Then you can, without risking pinching or even breaking your finger with the chain, swing, it will take your breath away. And the right materials and design of the suspension will not allow you to “spin the sun” and dive down from its highest point, or turn into a projectile fired from a sling, unable to group for landing, like acrobats.

Note: when choosing or designing a swing, do not neglect safety precautions! When swinging at full swing, the speed of the rocker at critical points of the trajectory exceeds 50 km/h! Accordingly, the result of falling or falling from a swing will be equivalent to an accident at the same speed.

Swings for small children

There are also swings for newborns and infants. There are many benefits from them, but they are medical equipment. It is strongly not recommended to make such a swing yourself, but choose store-bought ones and use them only as prescribed by your pediatrician.

For babies from about six months old, whose eyes are already looking meaningfully (this means that their vision has developed and they see clearly), a children's swing for little ones will be useful, see fig. on right. Just don’t forget to cover the ends of the pipes with polystyrene foam: at that age, a finger can fit into a small hole, and you want to stick it there. It is not recommended to place furniture of this kind near walls or other vertical surfaces. The same goes for large massive trees. You should not place furniture under their shadow, no matter how much you would like to. It may be dangerous. An exception could be a simple swing bed suspended on strong and thick tree branches.

A good summer cottage option for a small area would be not a multi-seat sofa swing, but several single-seat ones. Although they will take up more space, they will give the garden some originality and freshness. Before installing the structure, it is necessary to level the surface on which it will stand, and after completion, firmly compact it for stability.
